I mean, what mecha is truly “western”? As far as I can tell they’re all inspired by the OG super robots which branched into real robot and got picked up by western audiences with things like transformers. Would a Warship trueborn even be a thing outside of the Snow Ravens? I thought they were the only ones who have them with their own bloodnames for that. Aka do truename warriors even captain a warship or is this Solhama duty and 2nd line duty for the other clans.

Hells horses Tankwarrior Khan coming to a future near you.
>>
>>98014281
Captain of a warship is equivalent to a star colonel. Some clans may let someone without a blood name do it but not commonly, and it's definitely not solhama duty. It's sort of a dead end posting for most of clan history because warships don't get into real fights very often if at all.

I liked the Rakshasa before the Rakshasa was cool. Or at least New again.
...well, not the 1A. Obviously. I have a functioning brain, and unlike GM when they made the original, I'm not being bribed by Diverse Sunbeam Optics so I can recognise the Inner Sphere ERLL for the piece of crap that it is.
Now, the 1B on the other hand? That's fucking perfection. You still have to manage heat, it's not some braindead cooler build you can just alpha every turn. But now you can fire your LRM's and your Large Lasers at long range targets, and when they close, you switch from the LRM's to your Medium lasers. Sure you lose some range, but the Rak is a 5/8 heavy cavalry mech, you can close that distance.
1Ar is pretty good. You trade some of that heat control for a really nasty close range punch thanks to SRM rounds in MML's and a pair of Snub-Noses or LL's.
2A? Nothing wrong with it, I just don't respect it because it gave up trying to be an IS Mad Cat, and you got to stay true to yourself, you know?

>Jake Kabrinski was a member of the all-Elemental Zeta Galaxy when the rogue regiments of the Alshain Avengers launched an attack against Alshain. During one skirmish on Alshain against the Draconis forces, he challenged and single-handedly defeated an 100-ton Atlas
So how much of shamfu failure was this Atlas pilot?
>>
>>98014738
I know goonhammer hates the atlas. Saying it is actually fairly bad of a mech. So could be that.
>>
>>98014738
All depends on where they both were when the challenge was issued. It could have been in the seconds before the elemental latched onto the area between the shoulder blades of the atlas.
>>
>>98013311
Both of those designs are Japanese
>>
>>98014751
Anything with a 3/5 or slower movement profile that doesn’t have a fairly optimized long range loadout (Devastator) is going to be somewhat bad out of a proper context. In a stand up fight, yeah it kinda blows. It’s not bad when you’re playing for objectives that can mitigate the disadvantages of a 3/5 movement profile, or on a relatively flat map.
The atlas isn’t quite the terrifying death machine that the lore makes it out to be but it is fun and has a pretty nice sculpt.
>>
>>98014002
Talos?

By the time of the Combine/Ghost bear war the typical atlas is focused on long range.

>>98014822
>>98014891

It's a novel moment and it's fully-retarded. The mech pilot basically slaps his own face to swat the dude off his cockpit and KO's himself.
>>
>>98014959
Gameplay wise, that is completely possible. One of the ways to remove BA is to basically punch them. It's got an absurd +4 modifier to the piloting roll, and if you succeed they're knocked off and one of them takes a whole punch, but if you fail you hit yourself on the punch table.
There aren't really any great options to dislodge swarming BA. You can do a belly flop and shake them off with an unmodified piloting roll, but you also take damage as if you fell. You can use jump jets, but it's a +4 modifier again (although at least nothing bad happens to you if you fail it). Or you can enter water and delete the entire BA unit, but then you're submerged in the magical death acid and had to make at least one piloting roll to not fall over and hull breach your own ass.
>>
>>98015006
I know it's possible. I just fucking hate the Bears and wish they would get their retarded heads pounded in by Dracs or Robes or other clans every once in awhile. I've never seen the beartarded rage or the bear sloth bite them in the ass majorly, not once.

That said, I never understood the dead BA in water thing. They can survive in space and were made from underwater suits in the first place.
>>
>>98015029
I think it's just a victim of abstraction. Narratively they're probably not literally destroyed, but if they aren't one of the few suits actually built for underwater movement, they're just going to sink to the bottom and be stuck or so slow as to be a non-factor. Technically it's an "infantry" rule and not specifically a BA rule. Any infantry that is submerged or knocked into water that doesn't have UMU movement is destroyed. Some regular infantry units might be able to ditch their guns and swim, but they're still mechanically destroyed.

>>
>>98015232
>I still don't know how to feel about the Longinus being the only FWL BA that's really getting exported.

That's because it's a DA armor and was Stoner frontline before they ever fully fluffed it.
>>
>>98011835
Uh no, that's not how it works. A sun shade for an entire planet is not only going to be placed extremely far from the planet in terms of real distances (shield can be smaller the closer it is to the star), it is still a megastructure as wide as a stellar object and the shockwaves would have no ability to transfer shock to the rest of the structure because most of it is not rigid. Unless the maintenance thrusters are damaged a tattered sun shade will still do half the job if not more. The destruction of the shade had to be a very deliberate and long-running operation likely using energy weapons because you would run out of ammo otherwise.
>>
>>98015352
>(shield can be smaller the closer it is to the star,
This is true if the star is a point source, but because stars have bigger diameters than planets, the diameter required to fully shade a planet actually increases the closer you get to the star. If you had a circle with one earth diameter and put it just over Earth, it'd pretty much appear to cover the sun, but if it was halfway between Earth and the sun, it'd look like a dark spot in the middle of the sun.

The Leonidas is getting exported, but at a much lower capacity. Likely due to it's insane cost caused by the ECM more than doubling the cost of the suit. Not sure if you were the anon that was constantly promoting it but I have come round to the Rakshasa being a great mech and that the 1B is fantastic. Had to laugh that it formed a core component of the fac u sean lance and made it all the way to 2nd place in that tournament that anon did.
>>
>>98014700

Technically, a Rakshasa IIC would be the Mad Cat Mk2. It's never been explicitly stated, but it's always been my headcanon that Diamond Shark saw the Rak, had a good laugh, and went "No no no no Spheroids. THIS is how you make a homage to the Timber Wolf that will sell in ridiculous numbers across the Inner Sphere!" and proceeded to do just that with the Mk2.
Which... did get them into trouble with the other clans, as it was clearly designed to be sold to the Inner Sphere.

I mean, sure, so was the Ha Otoko. But the critical difference between the Ha Otoko and the Mad Cat Mk2 is that the Ha Otoko was made wrong, as a joke. It's probably the first Clan design in over a century with single strength heat sinks, just to troll the Dracs. Which is always funny.
>>
>>98016498

Eh, it's more a mix of promoting the Rak 1B, and constantly hating on IS ERLL's. Because they are terrible, and ruin a LOT of post-Helm Core era refit packages by absolutely buggering their heat curve for minimal range increases and ridiculous +50% heat increases.
12 heat for an 8 damage weapon? That doesn't even have the Pulse bonus? Fuck off. We have ER PPC's for this shit. I would sooner use a fucking Binary Laser than these.
>>
>>98016560
The IS ERLL does have its uses that really doesn't have the weight to spare for an ER PPC but still wants a long range weapon that can poke decent sized holes but holy hell it does indeed ruin a lot of 3050 refits.
They are next to worthless on the AS7-K and whoever it was bright idea to stick it on the ENF-5D needs to be raped to death by rusty spanners.
>>
>>98016594
>>98016560
The IS ER is a low-impact upgrade option after the switch to DHS. It's not great, but it probably won't force you to gut your machine either.
>>
>>98016610
That's perfectly fine like what they did with the Wolfhound and hell even the Blackjack works alright with them. The problem is that they were putting them on designs that still had SHS and nowhere near the ability to manage the heat load of them properly.
>>
>>98016461
Its...just a slightly heavier urbanmech
>>
>>98016654
Don't worry about it, anon. It's just Tara posting about how she wants to suck Ezekiel Crow's dick.
>>
>>98016640

Diverse Optics were absolutely bribing the SHIT out of everyone those years.

There are a few mechs where it works, but those are ones which have been carefully built around them. The Vanquisher for instance is a good example.
Plus, it's not ever exclusively an Inner Sphere issue either. Orion IIC for example has one more ERLL than it can ever realistically ever fire unless it want's to risk a shutdown, maybe even an ammo explosion. That's 4 tonnes right there that could have been more armour.
>>
>>98016654

To be fair, people fucking love the Urbanmech as well.

The Scorps, on the other hand, are a periphery faction and thus don't belong to the IS by definition.

Clan lore
>>
>>98017607
Big players would be:

>Crusader clans in the Invasion Era (Smoke Jag, Ghost Bear, Jade Falcon, Wolf, Steel Viper, Diamond Shark, Nova Cat)
>Clans that moved to the IS and are around for ilClan (Wolf, Jade Falcon, Hell's Horses, Ghost Bear, Sea Fox, Snow Raven)

Most anything outside this list either gets annihilated or killed off at some point or another, or just never really see sufficient action in the IS to be a good jump-in point. Like yeah, Star Adder is cool and all, but unless you're gaming out a Wars of Reaving scenario, you're never going to actually play them. I would say just pick one of the omnipresent clans that you like the most and find the paint job that looks coolest from that clan.
>>
>>98017565
Wait a little bit for the new core rules that make UACs not jam and then doubletap constantly like madcunt as was always intended. Or just do it anyway because you've got the balls to.

>>98017137
Once using megamek I randomly rolled up the merc company name "Turbo Terrorists", so I suggest that one.
>>
>>98017565
By trolling your opponent into shifting his battle lines to keep some guns trailed on it, which should cut into his ability to put heat on your main battle line.
The additional AC20 is welcome as well, of course.

Chalcas Incorporated
A JF remnant where Technicians and Laborers refurbished mechs that got left behind and became Warriors on their own initiative.

Turbo Terrorists are the kind of guys you find farting about in the periphery doing deranged piratical shit and hire to do deniable warcrimes.

Feels like one of those 'incognito' merc units the robes would send out to train in the Periphery.

Any of y'all play alpha strike? I have been intrigued by it as of late. The idea of playing large unit battles in a few hours is one that interests me.

I’ve done a game of hex map alpha strike, and it’s probably fine for casual friends or large-scale battles, but it loses so much of the detail of Classic that I don’t like it quite as much. Most of the units feel very same-ey, but maybe that changes with SPAs or advanced rules or something. I’d say it’s worth trying and seeing if it clicks with you and your group.
>>
>>98019025
I was wondering bit that could be an issue. Classic is just so much detail and AS seems very short on stats, but the other rules may help. Not like it's a small rulebook

He led a Maniple (and their Cohors Morituri "support" Century) during the Jihad-era 'Siege of the Hegemony' campaign we did, opposing the Word of Blake and their Circinus Federation puppets during the fighting on three different worlds.
He was the arch rival of my Manei Domini, Adept Baal, Ascended of the 52nd Shadow Division.
Gallus was the fucking bane of my WoB Militia forces and even killed a few Hands of the Master during the fighting. He was a badass, and if I'm honest performed better than a Sasquatch had any right to lol

In the closing days of the war for Addhara he led his Maniple on a desperate mission deep into Blakist held territory to rescue his brother, who had been captured by Baal and was being tortured live, his suffering broadcast across the planet in an effort to draw out the Principes.
He fought well against Baal's No-Dachi but died here, slain in melee by the Ascended Manei Domini.
His death shattered the cohesion and morale of the Marian forces, leading to their uncoordinated withdrawal from Addhara, which allowed the Word of Blake to catch many retreating units and destroy them before they got off world. Addhara, and two other border worlds, fell to the Blakists, setting the stage for the next bloody phase of the Hegemony Sieges.

You can layer up almost all mechanics from classic on to AS. As much or as little as you like. It cuts mostly tedious ranges/dmg/heat checks, I know it's part of the fun but you can play 10turn AS game under 3,5h with it.

Will you guys play with the Edges?
>>
>>98020196
Edge is Shadowrun shit, so no
>>
>>98020196
Probably only in the same way I'm planning on using regular SPAs; where forces draft them at random (a little like an SPA version of a RAT) and then can assign them to eligible pilots.

Depends on what they do to Edge's normal applications too.
>>
>>98020196
I only ever used them for RPG stuff, so maybe if I ever do that again. Definitely not in my normal campaign.
>>
>>98014211
That would be the Starship Troopers power armor, as envisioned by Studio Nue (Miyatake and Kato specifically). On the shoulder of giants and all that.
>>
>>98020297
Edge's normal applications are

>Add +1 to a hit roll after rolling, converting a miss by 1 to a hit.
>Reroll your roll on the number of critical hits table
>If in a unit that has one, force the enemy to re-roll a result on your motive crit table

Notably, the ability to cancel a headshot is gone.
>>
>>98020399
The ability to survive a headshot was the entire point of it. It's what keeps RPG characters from arbitrarily dying to a single golden BB.
>>
>>98020426
It may retain that function in RPGs, but for Draconis Reach, your pilots randomly dying is part of the experience because the main character is your company, not your pilots.

Draconis Reach broadly imports all the Named Pilot stuff from Aces to replace the pilot advancement from Hinterlands, and adapts it to work with real BT along the way.
>>
>>98020457
Generally I like Edge for headshots because it makes losing pilots a function of being deep in the shit or pushing your luck rather than being something that will just "go off" from the dice.

One point of edge for a "close call" and probably needing to have the pilot sit out the next track anyways if he gets hurt is plenty to make a broad roster better than getting your gigachad pilots all killed.
>>
>>98014211
the purifier is RIGHT THERE MAN
>>
>>98020761
Just use the Skin of Teeth ejection rules.
>>
>>98020960
That's just a pity roll for when a pilot is neck deep in it and predictably goes under; having to spend edge is a wake-up call and a chance to rotate and mix things up when your star pilot is having a 'bad day'.

The goal of such a system is to keep pilots that players like and have grown attached to around a little bit instead of investing in an increasingly large pile of pilots labeled "3/4 #1" "3/4 #2" etc. Making them a little tacky also makes players more likely to use forced withdrawl as a retreat rather than an impediment to grinding their forces to dust.

Having a 'second chance' doesn't make the game any less lethal. I've seen pilots catch two headshots in the same round of shooting.
>>
>>98021041
It also better represents how in fluff better pilots are actually harder to hit. Elite pilots go their whole careers in a Wasp when on the tabletop they get wiped out by the first thing to turn a pulse laser on them, just the same as the 4/5 grunts.
>>
>>98021048
well, in fluff that elite piloy can run jump and aim and shoot his stinger/wasp/phawk like an extension of their body, plus when they shoot, they use their big 'rifle' beam weapon by aiming, and turning the beam on and leaving it on as the heat builds, using no other weapons to not get so hot, as they continuously pour a beam into a target,

Its not the armor loss but the lack of heatsinks to take advantage of the JJ which is why I'd settle on the B even if that rear firing pulse is a waste of tonnage.

Talk of the old Clickytek game has got me wondering. Has anyone ever painted their Nova Cats up using the old Wizkids colour scheme? It seems to be white body, gold and bronze/brass details and black/gunmetal weapons.
It might be cool looking. I don't recall any galaxy using this scheme?

Damn their paintjob is rough. It's strange to me how some of the Wizkids things look quite ok then some are pretty bad. Must've depended on the paints used and year they were produced or something.
Also, no I haven't but I think it's a scheme that'd look really nice on Clan mechs. I'm painting a Spirit Cats force up for Classic but I do want a Nova Cat force someday and might use this scheme.

basically, that elite 1/2 pilot is operating operationally like a giant robot ninja fucking seal team 6 uber-ghurka, while the pilot in the ostensibly far better 70 t archer, is just plodding along, worse than tank controls, because he sucks at it, as a 4/5, so 'in universe' that stinger pilot is moving through cover and concealment and just pouring medium laser fire nigh constantly into the archers bunghole or cockpit.

that elite pilot who spent his 30 years in a stinger lived because he made the very wise choice of learning his survivability onion.

I really want to like the Cavalier. It's overall design is really nice, especially the face plate with those double slit eyes, but the built in adornments kinda ruin it for me. The head fin would have worked if it was designed more like the rays of a sun, but the big sword plastered on the sides just ruin it.
The Achileus looks awesome though.
>>
>>98022121
That rarely is the case in-universe; if that pilot is a 1/2 and still in a Stinger, it's either because nothing else is available or because he wants to be in that Stinger. When he got assigned to a recon unit in the Legion of Vega, Teddy K's pet Tetsuhara turned down a Griffin posting to stay in the family Panther. Excellent and effective pilots don't stay in shitboxes unless they desire no other place to be.
