>>98032123Nah, the Warrior Houses are more like sects than dojos
>>98032123
Wasn't there a thing at one point where your mechwarriors were like D&D characters and you followed pilot progression if they survived battles? I know 90% of Battletech is just watching your pilots fry, but I remember people caring more about pilots at one point.
>>98032270Talking about the Mechwarrior RPG?
>>98032270
I'm putting together two lances for introducing my friend group to the game and need to balance this out. So far I haveHouse SteinerGrasshopperThunderboltHatchetmanHouse MarikAwesomeOrionWolverineI'm currently debating on the last mech for both lances. I was initially going to go with the Zeus for Steiner but I'm worried that it will not really stack up. I have a Marauder II that I might use in it's place. I also have the mega ass rape Banshee variant but that thing is honestly too good to use for this scenario. For Marik I am split between a Black Knight and Archer as their last spot. I have models for both. I'm more a fan of the Black Knight but I don't want to stack the FWL side up with two different "three of the same big energy weapon and no ammo bins" mechs. The Archer's merits here are obvious and I do think LRM spam is the signature FWL setup the way the Dracs love PPCs.Thoughts? I'm also printing out sheets for post-Helm / pre-Invasion variants on some of these mechs to see if that helps balance things out.
>>98032451Steiner needs an Assault, Marik needs a Medium
>>98032451Depends really on how big is this group of players you are trying to get in as I would not really include anything outside of the medium weight bracket for a first time play? Can still do a Steiner vs Marik themed fight but I would make it like a Griffin vs Wolverine 1vs1 to teach them how to play first, hell a Griffin 1S and Wolverine 6M is a relatively close match up.If this is a complete showcase though of a bunch of different mechs with different capabilities then I'd suggest a Highlander for Steiner and Trebuchet for Marik, adjust variants as needed to get a relatively even matchup.
>>98032451Zeus and hermes II.
>>98032270Much of the RPG is set during the Succession Wars, when there was often a sort of chivalry in play - because mechs were so rare, pilots rarely fought to the death. Mechs would often back off once a location was punctured or limb lost, the idea being to force the other side to retreat from the risk of losing their rare and difficult to repair mech. The PCs were in a business so constantly had to balance the risk vs the rewards from their contract The fun part of the RPG though was the players doing stuff outside of their mechs that aided their eventual mech battles - scouting enemy positions on foot and capturing enemy sentries, commando raids to steal or destroy enemy ammo and supplies, raiding HQ trucks to gain intel, political shenanigans to gain allies and friendly punch ups in bars with rival merc units and household troops, or squabbles over the loot and who gets the new actuator or PPC they looted from the enemy. Also, rare Star League caches (weapons, armour, double heatsinks, etc) were like magic is in D&D, rare sought for and collected supertech to give a slight advantage to the PCs and help make their mechs unique. The game (at least for us) was more about the entire aspect of future warfare, orbital drops, space and ground combat, subtefuge, politics, tactics, strategy, etc, and less about the current simple pick up game of 'matching BV arena match' that seems so popular nowadays.
>>98032581This is supposed to be a pretty comprehensive show of what kinds of mechs there are, general roles, etc. Will be doing the SuccWar honor system of "forced retreat at first torso armor breach" to keep things moving.I'm probably going to put a Zeus and Trebuchet in the missing slots. It seems pretty even that way and I can also get both of those in the same pack.
So, “anime” was one of the themes CGL teased for a future BattleTech Continuum set. What are some ideas (outside of art style) for giving BattleTech an anime flavor?
>>98032839Do they really want to tickle that badger again?
>>98032864How could it even be done?Let’s just set the whole issue about the Unseen aside by, for example, saying it would stick to featuring Clan ‘Mechs. But again, this is just a matter of using an art style. What could be done in terms of game mechanics to give BattleTech a more “anime” flavor? With Gothic, the answer was adding biomechanical monsters.
>>98032895The better question is "should it be done?" Because they already cribbed from the more grounded military scifi anime of the '80s, so that leaves either space magic shit, super robot shit, or alien/supernatural Annoshit.
So you don’t have any ideas, gotcha.
>>98032895>>98032839Quick thoughts:To distinguish it from the regular slugfest, take it closer to its Dougram roots and the like.Mechs are literally Heroes and mooks, where hero mechs can tank shots and mooks will just get blasted in one good shot. But there's also hero tanks and hero infantry that can support stuff with unreasonably powerful capabilities. Mostly just being stupidly difficult to kill even if they can't actually defeat anyone.Maybe even take it literally, and assume the mech fights are as part of producing a tv show. If you've ever seen the game 7TV there is a LOT that can be taken from that in terms of direction with characters, events, mission types, playing event cards for stuff like plot twists and oddities like animation errors, continuity problems, or having to re-shoot bits kind of things.Far more dramatic mobility. Just constant jumping even without jump-jets, floating mid-air if you have them, shooting whilst mid-jump.Alien invasion.
>>98032864Harmony Gold lost their lawsuit against HBS so they can go piss up a rope.
>>98032839>>98033004>>98032895Vertical maneuver gear has been statted in Clan Troops. Writing an Anime version of the Grey Death Legion books would be hella easy.Make the GDL's then ride on their captured mechs like they're budget Elementals and you'll get hella cool visuals and a seamless transition into the Clan Invasion, when they get BA.
>>98032721Fair enough and understandable. Pretty decent line up then that covers a load of roles.>>98032839It would not surprise me if CGL end up trying to copy Girls und Mech.
>>98033004This is a really interesting idea, and exactly the sort of thing I had in mind.I’m wondering how the hero/mook distinction would work with CBT rules, however. For example, my hero is piloting a light ‘Mech against a mook piloting an assault ‘Mech.
>>98033131Probably some kind of resource to expend for dramatic situations, assault mech mook is a kind of mini-boss, the hero pilot has to put in specific effort to take down with like repeated head-shots or death-from-above attack. Or just hero attacks automatically succeed vs a mook and they can make called shots? If it's going for the tv show filming thing, then assume the objective isn't just a battle and the players have to work semi-cooperatively as well as competitively to do these things to set up good dramatic situations and they get score or objectives for like, The Hero DFA's at least 1 enemy mech, rescued their captured comrade, blow up the fuel dump to cover their escape, the baddies have to hang on to their prisoner for (a suitable length of time for dramatic tension), inflict (some damage), blow up at least 1 rescue transport... that kinda thing. Avoid any objectives that involve a straight up battle unless it's about an actual heroic level fight, and even there it should involve trying to out-do the other player in cool-factor.
>>98032045The main obstacle in building a project around Anton’s Revolt is getting players to care about the Free Worlds League and, more particularly, yet another instance of the FWL’s signature beat … fighting itself. It’s also difficult to understand what is compelling about Anton’s Revolt. I think the conflict was invented as a (1) a frame for a story about Wolf’s Dragoons and (2) to mothball the FWL out of the 4th Succ War storyline. But, looking at the conflict as its own thing, what kind of issues would motivate regular people within the setting to fight?Best I can come up with so far is that the Janos and his two predecessors had squandered too much cultural and political capital unsuccessfully fighting the Lyrans over the last 70ish years, building up resentment for the office of Captain-General. But how this then translates into anyone supporting Anton taking over the role is a but of a mystery.
The huge gap between total warfare going out of print and the new rules coming out is insane.
>>98031619I like the general concept, but the setup could've been better. Imo chunks of the Fedsuns being bitter over getting caught up in the Clan Invasion because of the LyrCom getting invaded, and getting big heads because the Fedsuns' industry is a lot better than the complete mess it is pre-Hanse, could have worked better as the set-up. Unfortunately Fedsuns were designated protags and Lyrans as a whole aren't allowed to be cool in the overarching plots, only individual Lyrans in spite of the faction as a whole.
>>98032065I really like the Gladiator, I really wish it'd stayed as the Medium mech mainstay for the Dracs instead of being retired so early.
65 tons seems to be the optimal for me. I remember when I played as a kid, BIG = BETTER. If it wasn't 100 tons, it was shit. Now I'm really digging 55-65 max.
>>98032895Literally just expand on japtech. It might look like Armored Core, but it's actually the other way around. They got Shoji Kawamori himself to make new designs for Battletech's Japanese releases and then he went on to do similar things with that style. The only hitch here is that it is utterly impossible for their soft doo doo plastic to be able to handle it. It needs sharp definition to have even a chance of coming through on models.
>>98033762For me it’s the Medium-Heavy weight brackets. There’s definitely a few good assaults out there that I like, but even then I like the faster, lighter assaults. 55 tons is probably my favorite weight class in the game, but a few of the speedy mediums are a lot of fun to work with.
>>98033805As noted, the question is for ideas OTHER than art/visual design
>>98033820I think that's what it really is. I like that they're fast enough to keep up with many lights, and depending on the fit, they can do plenty of damage to heavier classes. I don't even really use assaults anymore. The game that sold me on high-end mediums was one where the objective was to destroy a compound inside of a city, and my opponent decided to put everything he had in a front along the edge of the city like we were about to engage in Napoleonic warfare or something. I just spammed LRMs from across the map while charging in with the mediums, and then ignored his front line entirely and ran right past them.
*flies past*
>>98032839>>98032895All the high tech staples of Mecha anime that would raise the ire of the realism guys if implemented proper into 'Tech but appease the 'Mech guys.Things like Funnels, Gattai, alt modes of locomotion, etc.
>>98033004Lorewise, Anime tech's background should be that the SLDF didn't fall, they went all in one refining LAMs and other hyper experimental stuff that only the Star League's advanced RnD would have the resources and time to work out, applied what they figured out to Battlemechs as a whole, and by 3025 Battlemechs are these fast moving, high damage dealing super machines that completely crap on every other conventional unit in the setting. Tanks beyond small niches are completely obsolete and replaced by Protomechs that don't suck unlike canon, infantry is entirely done away with for armies of power armored troops and cyborgs, ASF are pretty much all LAMs, Superheavies are a stable mobile command center for commanders on the field and are genuinely threatening against even full lances of Battlemechs, free hand weapons are common and advanced as fuck like heat axes and plasma blades, etc etc. Just go all in on the highest edge of Real Robot. The backdrop can be by around 3025 the Periphery has collected enough leaked texhand secretly built up enough forces to rebel, the Great Houses use the excuse to also try their own coups for the Cameron's throne, and now it's an all out war across all of human space with the Periphery States trying to secede, the Great Houses either trying to become First Lord or use the chaos as an excuse to hurt their longtime rivals, all while Cameron and the SLDF are spread thin trying to restore the status quo and press their jackboot down on the troublemakers.
>>98032895Mech heelies and constant lift hover legs. Switch to wheeled or hover mode because it's faster over flat ground, rollerblade drift around corners. Also direct brain controlled drones ala Gundam bits. And maybe a little bit of energy shielding, as a treat.
>>98034077Amusingly enough, they could kinda sorta do it by using only Clantech and working on fixing LAMs/Protos. I can almost see it working with some good ruleset fixes.... a tantalizing idea.So it will never happen and we'll get some boring/predictable Gundam spoof with bad rules for psychic powers written by Gen Xers that never saw a single episode of any mecha anime ever.
https://store.catalystgamelabs.com/blogs/news/timkovichis-ghostshttps://youtu.be/7y7poQbGurM?si=6un4roXQCdMng_X9Damn, wonder why CGL is pushing this so hard. Is this planet/event reeeeeeally significant for some reason?
>>98034148>A battletech novelWho wastes there time with this poorly written trash?
>>98032895Given that the AnimeTech is the Clan centeted, I would assume that it will be about the sibko cadets being like EVA pilots or GuP students doing Tank-do competing against other schools. High school students piloting mech
>>98033762>>98033820>>98033932Mediums are hard to master but when you do offer some of the most tactical flexibility of any weight class as well as some downright cheese. Bought this because it was only $6, but how should I put it on a hex base?
>>98034586Still cannot forgive that bitch of a princess
>>98034597You don't. It's double normal battletech scale. Most regular quads won't even fit on a hex.
>>98033080>Writing an Anime version of the Grey Death Legion books would be hella easy.Whenever I try to introduce friends into battletech lore through the novels the first set of books I always point to are the Gray Death Legion trilogy novels, so I could easily see that being adapted as an entry point assuming they don't fuck it up
>>98034643I just recently got an IWM Fire Scorpion and it can't even touch a hex base unless the body extends all the way off one edge and the other legs are a whole other hex beyond.
Starter game anon, got the unit lists finalized. I'm going to playtest this list in MegaMek a few times to make sure there isn't any kind of glaring issues but I think this should be a good matchup. I'm debating changing the Orion for one of the other upgrade models that dosen't have the NARC. Otherwise this list has basically everything you could need to know. UACs, pulse lasers, LB/X, different missile types, hatchets.. One of the reasons I'm throwing in some advanced tech is because most of the people have played MW4 and/or MWO so running a strictly SuccWars tech level would seem pretty gimped. It would feel like being one of those DMs who insists on everyone starting at Level 1 for their first game and gives out shit loot because the new players haven't "earned it" yetJust need to buy that forcepack, paint the last two models and it's ready for the tabletop
>>98034602There were many in that show that warranted punishment but were spared, I don't dare elaborate because spoilers
>>98034597Without cutting the legs off and reposing it? You don't.Even if you did clickytech models are out of scale and you would probably have to basically pose it like a dog shitting or a horse rearing to have any hope of it fitting on a regular hex.
>>98034691>most of the people have played MW4 and/or MWO so running a strictly SuccWars tech level would seem pretty gimped. You'll never please vidyatards, those fucking games have caused more damage than even Wizkids did
>>98034688The old trick to this was to use the sprues as extra runners that extend from the base. Then, you wind up with something that at least has a hex bottom and can get near most other minis.
>>98034597Just play Mechwarrior. It's actually fun af.
>>98034803That game is extinct. Its fire has gone out of the universe; you, anon, are all that's left of those who play it.
>>98034820Don't care. We're having fun with it around here :D
>>98034719Are you a retard? I don't know anyone under the age of 40 who didn't play a MechWarrior game first and I have six people wanting to learn BT based on their experiences with them. How many people have you personally gotten into playing?
>>98034691I honestly would have still stuck to introtech just to show how everything worked first and then had a separate list that is maybe FedCom era for game two just to show how it changes everything up as well as how you can play multiple eras with different mechs.
>>98031619Easily the era I am least interested in. It bores me terribly.
>>98034834Not him, but I've been to four cons in the past year (not even gaming cons) and without fail everyone is playing BT. Not old farts either. 20 year olds. I barely saw anyone playing D&D which was a shock. It was Magic, BT, everything else, and then one or two tables for D&D
>>98034803>>98034833king
>>98034714>>98034643i looked it up and holy blake it's heug
>>98034820It's at least still a better game than AS.
>>98034834There haven't been any decent mechwarrior games in almost a decade. The people who were too young to play BT 2018 when it was relevant are much, much less likely to have played any Battletech related vidya at all.

>>98032839>What are some ideas (outside of art style) for giving BattleTech an anime flavorMy hope is that its going to be something like this and not something dumb or boring like Macross/Gundam. Imagine Victor in Minase's place, and his sister is Reika, so instead of Victors princess harem we get Katrinas princess harem as she conquers the Inner Sphere through the power of futa cock.If Battletech would just get over Mormons and Rem's brand of puritan feminism and embrace being horny it might actually be successful. This is how to do it.
>>98035279>The blonde futa teacherSo many memories..
>>98035279I see you and I raise you to Boku no Sibko.
>>98035279>embrace being hornyThe players are horny enough. Our game of combat math and autism spreadsheets doesn't need official TnA. Besides, this is CGL we're talking about, if they embracedbeing horny it would be all edge case queer fetishism.
>>98035380>mechwarriors are all haughty twinks>elementals are all uncouth bancho>pilots are all bratty femboys
>>98034867It has been my experience that the parts of learning CBT that are complex enough to be a turn off are always going to be there. Electronic warfare stuff is a lot to explain but basically everything else is just "improve gunnery skill / cluster table roll by one" with the odd improve by two throw in.4/5 SuccWars is an absolute slog to teach if you are playing with people who already fundamentally understand how to play this style of game. A significant, possibly even greater than half, of gunnery rolls are going to be worse than 50% odds of actually hitting. If you are playing with actual noobs who are just going to sit in the medium range bracket trying to circle strafe each other it's not bad. But if you have players who quickly grasp TMM, cover modifiers, et-al then they have all the best / most annoying defensive options that carry over into any era but none of the options to mitigate them.
I've got an ilClan Alpha Strike game tomorrow, will try my best to write up a battle report here for those interested. Here's my force, Hansen's Roughriders. They'll be escorting a heavily damaged armored company out of enemy territory. >>98031619It's my favorite era. I like the "Well, we just beat the big bads... Now what?" feel as a lot of the things put for a later date have bubbled up and are finally addressed. Plus, it's the best Battletech got at designing cool 'mechs and variants. Everything just works. There's just something magical about the late Clan Invasion and Civil War that definitely felt like it's magnum opus. (Because... Well, it was.)
>>98035759>escorting a heavily damaged armored companyI enjoy games like this
>>98035771Personally, I wish the rules for blocking fire and maybe movement were better for scenarios like that. Even with the Shielding optional rule, it's fairly easy to just shoot past (or jump past) defenders to hit the defendees.
>>98032641I kinda wish the new minis had kept the rounder head for the Phoenix Hawk instead of making it look like the old Macross design again. At least the PGI version kinda got it.
>>98035780Homebrew it my dude
>>98034256It still annoys me how so many mechs look related to each other but they have no connection in the lore. The Thug, Awesome, Dragon, Zeus, Jager and probably others all have those same weird flared shoulders and other similar features but they're made by a bunch of different defense contractors and primarily used by different factions. Say what you will about Gundam, one thing I liked about it was how they gave most factions a very distinct aesthetic. Not only did Zeon look different from the Federation, but Zeon had two competing defense contractors for their MS with their own distinct looks. Zeonic Company had longer faces and more spikes while Zimmad MS were smoother, had flat faces and usually bigger feet. It all fit together.
>>98031619The who the what now? There's no such thing.
>>98035279Methinks Btech is more Prison Battleship adjacent. We got all of it, terrible politics, genocidal leaders, mind-raep tech. Lilith and CGL are both terribly ran companies full of retards, it's a match made in heaven.>>98035856It's both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because we can essentially run whatever we want in most cases, and a curse because the "character" of a faction isn't well-defined by models. There's very few examples of "visual design" in the factions: the exceptions are the Celestials, the Society and some Clan totem mechs. But that makes them difficult to run in generic games because they're essentially faction-locked. Blessing and curse.
>>98035893>the annihilator is 100% wolf's dragoons only for a very long time>instead of having a rule or something about it contort the entire fictional metaverse to make sure there are zero battles they canonically lost, ever, where they had an annihilator that could have been turned into salvage
>>98035856You have to conclude those features have some kind of in universe purpose. The AK-47 and StG-44 don't actually have much in common mechanically speaking. They look the similar because there's only so many ways for a gun like that to look if you want it to work.
>>98036033In-universe there's also corporate espionage and for older mechs, sweeping technological standardization from the Star League. "We want a new frontal assault mech and it has to have x, y, and z features. One of those features is the Grumbleshmitz-Douper shoulder joint system already in use on these existing mechs because our analysts indicate that it's 6% more efficient in terms of maintenance costs and we're going to be ordering entire divisions of these things"
>>98035305There are no chicks with dicks, only dudes with boobs, man!>>98035751>4/5 succ warsHeat management is still important to learn. Just bump up P/G to compensate so the players can actually score hits.
>>98036139>only dudes with boobsThey're really chicks with real dicks, because it's all because of magic, I ain't gotta explain shit.
>>98035893
Can you theoretically shove BattleMech-grade armor, engine and etc on an IndustrialMech when you MOD it?
>>98036314There are plenty of industrial mechs that come with a fusion engine as standard, and armor is easy to replace by its nature. Everything from light hovercraft to dropships uses standard armor.
>>98036164I can confirm, I don't think Kitame can do both at once but she can do both
>>98036139>There are no chicks with dicks, only dudes with boobs, man!
>>98036314The Marians basically back engineered their Centurions this way, the initial models didn't even have actual armor. Bannson's Raiders eponymous mech was an IndustrialMech chassis designed to as closely emulate an Battlemech's abilities as possible while staying within Republic regulations on private mech ownership. Besides those once you hit the Dark Age that shit is fair game and everyone is doing it.
>>98036314I'm trying to remember the main malus on an Indy even with full conversion. Is it you gotta do a pilot roll every time you get hit instead of just 20+ damage? Or was it make a crit roll if you fall? It was something that made them legitimately worse than primitive mechs.
>>98036139>>98036369You gaijins really need to stop calling shemales 'futa'.
>>98036392Not them but they were legitimate magic futa. You'd think maybe it was the demon with a dick possessing them, but we see a 1000% genuine girl grow a dick with a spell in Origin.>I can't believe I'm talking Bible Black lore in a Battletech thread.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_otzZSDczs
>>98036421And if I remember my art appreciation sessions correctly, they grow their dicks straight out of their clits and still have vaginas under them, and no balls. I'm sure all of that is very relevant to classifying women with dicks.
>>98036383They take critical hits like a motherfucker. Every time they fall they have to make an extra roll to not get crit on top of falling damage, every time they take a melee attack they have to roll for an extra crit (weirdly it's in the end phase instead of immediately during the physical attack phase) and every time something rolls on the crit chart it gets +2 to the result (with a 13 counting as a 12 and a 14 being an automatic limb or head blown off or 4 crits to a torso). Also ICE engines can stall every time the pilot fails a PSR.
>>98036566Ans by comparison, primitive mechs are just... heavier. Their engines get an extra 40 (or was it 60?) to the rating, and the rest of their components are just plain fat. They are inefficient battlemechs, but once they're on the table they function closer to something that's got components which don't factor into the current game, like a C3M with no network or cargo space and nothing to put in it.
Will you guys be doing the Hot Spots Draconis Reach?
>>98036645Yes. Probably. Maybe. I don't know. It's hard to do anything but one-offs anymore.
>>98036602A good reference is the Sarissa, because they built an industrialmech version of what was originally a primitive mech and it saved them about 3.5 tons without affecting the performance on-sheet at all (although they did also shave off half a ton of armor so they could put 4 more heat sinks on it). It does of course suffer from horrendous critical hit issues like all industrials, but at least its components aren't fat.
>>98036432>they grow their dicks straight out of their clits and still have vaginas under themInferior to the TENTACLE VAGINA!
>>98036566You'd think most industrialmechs would be pretty sturdy when it comes to falls when they're probably not getting very good pilots and the computer has to do almost all the work since their pilots don't get neurohelmets either. With how incredibly clumsy drone mechs and even 4/5 pilots are I'm surprised they don't need to pass a PSR just from running, I'd assume falls would be a pretty common issue at a worksite using industrialmechs.
>>98036935Most industrialmechs at a worksite probably never run at all. It's like a forklift, yeah you can technically slam on the gas, but the speed limit in the work area is snail-like and if you did go fast, the safety guy would have a heart attack and they'll yank your qualification to pilot.
PRAISE BLAKE
>>98032839Girls und Panzer but with battlemechs
>>98032839Do a 3-way crossover with BT Gothic. Make it so the main enemy is sex demons of both human and mecha size, and the animes they're referring to is a mix of Wicked City and Taimanin Asagi. Which would be in keeping with BT Gothics tone, and obviously the sex demons and ninjagirl rape bait is the anime part.
>>98036995There would be many other dangers to an industrialmech's stability on a worksite. They're going to be navigating uneven and occasionally loose terrain, they need to load and unload large amounts of material that will not always be secured to the mech, they're going to be pushing and pulling on things like the ground, trees and structures designated for demolition. They need to do all of this with a sub par pilot that doesn't even get a neurohelmet and a computer that isn't even built to the same grade as the notoriously clumsy drone mech computers.
>>98036314A lot of DA militia and retrotech mechs are based entirely on the idea of making cheap and easier to build combat platforms by cutting corners that way. Heavy Industrial Armor is identical to Standard Armor.>>98037147Industrial Mechs are designed to less rigorous control standards because they can operate in specialized, controlled environments. A lumbermech needs a roll cage and protection from flying splinters and falling logs, but does not need to be made to withstand gauss rounds or calculate ballistics; so they armor it up some, give it cost-effective myomer and structure and leave the rest up to the operator not being a retard.Certain workmechs start to be more like psuedo-battlemechs, such as fire mechs; and some actually are intended to fight, which is why you see more advanced electronics on militiamechs and etc.
Alright guys, let’s get back to BattleTech jeez
>>98037316But industrialmechs are cool and would work great as an enemy mook unit in every scenario
>>98035856The old sculpts were more distinct, personally i blame shimmy. All the new designs practically look the same with their bulbous greeble pockmarked designs.
>>98037479If that were true then that would be so, but your Afro-engineered KilldozerMech isn't going to stand up to even the most primitive BattleMechs no matter what you clap on its outside>>98037638Sounds like a skill issue if you can't tell between a Thug, a Zeus, and a Mauler the second your eye alights upon them
>>98037638Actually I just blame there being too many mechs, too many designs. There should have been more variants of existing classics and only a trickle being introduced over time, but the desire to draw new robutts was the order of the day and nobody had the foresight to see it being a problem. Even for an interstellar humanity there are way, way, way, way way way too many different war machine designs. The selection of standard vees is much more reasonable. If you have less unique designs then you have less competition for recognizable silhouettes.
>>98037734>but the desire to draw new robutts was the order of the day and nobody had the foresight to see it being a problemPreach, brother, the glut is real and the mongrels still want more.
>>98037731There's a good number of battlemechs that wouldn't have great odds against an industrialmech with a few medium lasers, much less something like a CERPPC or CLPL.
>>98037731Actually the reason why the militia mech exists as a concept is because they punch above their weight class. Making a viable mech combat unit in a cave with a box of scraps puts you on the board even if your only pieces are pawns. The Arbiter for example may be a 35 ton shitbox, but a Heavy Rifle in hand is worth more than an AC20 four jumps away.
I just want a 5/8/7 move profile, max armor, and the ability to punch a hole in medium armor from 7 tiles away.
Militiamechs are a product of in and out of universe pro-mech brainrot. They are almost always more expensive and less capable than an equivalent conventional vehicle.
myomer is magic, but it's not as magic as battletech fusion propulsiongiven the tech in the setting the real elite combat machines would be brickfighters capable of switching between hektik 6dof VTOL gunship and hypersonic space fighter in an eyeblinkwith optional myomer murder tentacles for close combat, spaceship boarding and rudimentary ground locomotion

Would a mech with heavy enough armor survive atmospheric re-entry? Not the landing part, just falling through the atmosphere from orbit.
>>98039114Yes.
>>98039114No mech can survive raw dogging an atmospheric entry, but heavier armor will help you survive a botched reentry where your drop cocoon is blown off since you'll be taking at least 20 damage but probably more in 5 point increments.
>>98038965Good work, I really like the basing too
>>98039195>>98039114Aren't there a few mechs with JJ's that can sort of survive the landing part too? Like, didn't Kurita survive an assassination attempt because he and someone jumped out of their crashing dropship in a Grasshopper?Like the mech was completely totalled, but they survived.
>>98039320Jumping out of a dropship while it's in atmosphere is completely routine and any mech with jump jets can do it unassisted. It's the space-atmosphere interface that liquifies unprotected ground units.
>>98034597I have a printed Xanthos that I reposed into a rear-kicking pose to fit on a hex base. It works surprisingly well.
>>98039360Even mechs without jump jets can just mount an external jump pack. Jump packs are one of those things that get you to ask "why doesn't everyone use this all the time?" It's less expensive than a ton of ammo for most weights and speeds, doesn't generate heat, covers a pretty good amount of distance, and if it gets destroyed (which will automatically happen if you take a rear shot), then you simply lose it with no further consequences. It lowers your walk speed as external cargo, but why would you walk or run when the entire point of it is to give you jump MP?
>>98039458You only need jump of 1 for landing so I thought all jump packs were just that, a jump movement of 1?
>>98039472If you wanted to skimp on landing gear by using minimal jump packs, you could since making a drop uses all of your fuel and ejects the pack automatically, but you could also strap larger ones to any mech and give it its full jump range just the same as if it had jets. A 60 ton 4/6 mech can strap on a 4 ton jump pack to become a 2/3/4 with the ability to jump up to 32 hexes before running out of fuel and ejecting the pack. Light and medium mechs get 2 MP per ton, heavies and the low end of assaults get 1, and the biggest assaults get .5

Interesting and/or odd how they're doing the same thing they did with the Early Dark Age Splinter Factions in the new Ilclan stuff. The Hinterlands is similar to the Republic Prefectures, groups of worlds that nominally belong to a greater power but are now splintered and being fought over by various small breakaway/holdout factions that are basically microcosms of bigger Battletech factions. I wonder why they're doing this again. I mean, I ain't complaining (I ADORE the Dragon's Fury and Spirit Cats) but it is strange to see them mess about with this concept again.
>>98040076It creates a region of constant micro-wars that can attract almost anyone to meddle with, and that an infinite number of OC donut mercenaries can play in at any scale from protecting some sheds from pirates to supporting an invasion of entire worlds.
>>98040076I guess they're doing it again because it's an easy way to come up with new factions and lore and thus push people into buying new minis to start new armies without having to upset the "grander picture" of the Inner Sphere too much.
>>98040076>I ADORE the Dragon's Fury and Spirit CatsKING
>>98034834The biggest whiners by far about the tabletop game are the /v/-tards that got spoiled by MW5's min-max build system and easily-acquirable tech. I've lost count of how many times I've heard some nutstain in my LGS say "But the video game let me do it!" when they wanted to field a speshul snoflake modded 'mech with no weaknesses on the table, citing tech not even existing in Maximum Tech to build with. Video gamers are the worst people to play with or engage with in this hobby, they are the apex of the shit mountain that is instant gratification. IlClan era is their jam not because they give a fuck about the lore, they just jerk off over the lavish tech availability because it enables their vidya-ingrained WAACdom. Give me a dozen crusty grognards who refuse to budge from 3050 tech over a thousand vidyababies bitching the tabletop doesn't cater to their mechsploitation fetishes.

>>98040893The phoenix hawk is probably more common than any single one of the 55 trio.
>>98040881My guesses would be:Wasp, Shadow Hawk, Archer, Stalker
>>98040881Based on the lore for individual chassis and the Ubiquitous Quirk:Light: Wasp, in a close race with the Stinger. (While the Locust is cited as also extremely common, it does not have the Ubiquitous Quirk, it is likely that it is 3rd at best).Medium: Griffin, also in a close race with the Phoenix Hawk and Shadow Hawk. The Wolverine is also rather common, but especially historically it finds itself in waxing and waning production.Heavy: Archer, hands down and it's not even close.Assault: Stalker, the only other Assault that enjoys the Ubiquitous designation is the Longbow.Generally historically Age of War designs have had hundreds of years to be made on countless factories on countless worlds. Those that have stood the test of time and could be refitted to meet changing battlefield conditions and technology are at least as popular in IlClan as they were during the Succ Wars.

>>98041230We get it from both sides. TRO 3039 (or it might be TRO 3025, I only have the cites in front of me) specifically state that it is more numerous than the Stinger during the Succ Wars and nothing specifically suggests that balance would have shifted. We can take the contradiction in stride since it's basically a photo finish; both are very common all through BT history.

Thinking about how it should be mass dedicated to myomer and myomer housing instead of engine mass that dictates top speed made me realize that, in this alternate timeline where there was a little more thought put into it, variants with significantly higher top speed would be visually identifiable by noticeably thicker legs relative to other variants. So a banshee 3E would have trunk-like legs but a 3S would look rather anemic.
