Hell, I don't even think most BL authors do either, a lot of them write this version of 40k that seems oppressively mundane, where it's basically a generic space opera science fantasy setting with gothic visuals overlaid on top and tucked into a corner. The exceptions are certain authors like Wraight, Fehervari, Ian Watson (weirdly enough) and...ADB for some reason, despite his reputation. Abnett does it in flashes, but Abnett is really weird in that most of his recommended work just feels more generic, which is probably why it's so beloved - he's a decent writer who writes an at-times very milquetoast and approachable version of 40k, especially in his earliest works (early Gaunt's Ghosts, Eisenhorn, Brothers of the Snake) so that appeals to the widest number of people.
