Any of you guys have made your own battlemats?
I'm kinda torn right now between buying a noch grassmat, making my own with either canvas or rubber and caulking them / flocking with woodland scenics stuff or just making do with my cheap $10 fake (soft) grass one and maybe painting it a bit.
What I probably really want is one of those slightly sturdier old citadel mats (too pricy) or a woodland scenics one but they don't ship where I am.
It's for a 6' x 4' board and I love the old white dwarf 90s aesthetic with neon green-ish aesthetic. (not that i'm averse to the modern aim for realism in some stuff like brown spots muds yellow highlights etc, but I want that 'fantasy' with bright greens as a finisher)

From what I understand it's the best option for colored metallics. No idea about copper, silver, gold, and other metals, but it's a far less desaturated gold than their VMet equivalence at the very least.

>>98033854
They are nice but not anything revolutionary in my opinion; I have 3 of them (2 base colours, 1 highlight colours), they do have good coverage and are easy to use which makes them good for a beginner that isn't looking for a certain metallic paint with specific properties and hue in particular. Pic rel showcases aged metal from that line

I'm still using vallejo metal colours duraluminium as my workhorse and gsw gold pigments as my shiniest gold, but it's a matter of preferences
>>
>>98034020
Oh yea for my silver/grey metals I have duraluminium and burnt iron
Im simply looking to get a couple more colors, specifically a good rich gold (up until now I simply used duraluminium and applied nazdreg yellow on top of it) and maybe a very very bright silver for that final highlight.

Me too, but not every single one of them. The most shiny silver one is quite odd but Dragon's Gold is easily THE best gold I worked with.

That reminds me, there was some anon who wanted to try out method of mixing GSW pigment with existing paint and stroing in bottles, with addition of thinning solution to prevent it from drying prematurely (like someone else had). I wonder how that experiment went out.

Looking back at Vince's gold video, he should really redo it with different paints. Surely he'd like something like a pro acryl, TTC, or AK gold paint. It might not measure up to his special recipe, but surely one of them might be good enough.

In the picture attached to the post Ive linked you can see AK Rusty Gold which is a nice, desaturated gold and somewhat similar.

Oh thanks I didn't even notice that. It looks like TTC Ancient gold is also a good match for that kind of color. Rusty gold is such a weird name. The AK one isn't one of the paints that falls apart like in Stahly's review of the AK line, is it? I could go for either that or the TTC one.

Yes, they are quite useful. Especially for brainstorming color schemes. Doubly so for paints that are not on Stahly's. Like AK AFV.
>>
Struggling a lot with a grainy texture from pro acryl bright yellow ochre. What's to be done about it? I have had issues with grainy textures from yellows in the past, which I found working up from pink, and keeping the paint relatively thick helped with. This time it's for gold nmm so the pink undercoat isn't really practical. Would a slightly more satin medium help? The paint is incredibly matte.
>>
>>98036380
I think people's obsession with color matching via stahly's grid is incredibly ill informed, but having your own swatches in reality does help in that you can properly color-pick more easily on the dry paint rather than the wet paint, and they often look very different.

if you're looking for the best metallic paints you need to look beyond acrylics. the best acrylic metallics can't even compete with shitty lacquer ones.

Little update on the halflimperator here. I decided to go all out on this little fellow considering the effort levied so far, and how pleased I am with the progress and general aesthetic.

Still in the rough stages but I thought I would show off what you can do with a scriber tool here on this guy. If you'll note his big floofy landsknecht pants, you can see I carved out rough undercuts to create more dimension in the slashed out layer of the pants, by carving into the crevices and then underneath the upper panels with the hook of the scriber. This is effectively a dry sculpting method.

It's not all that difficult to do. It is just particular work, and time consuming so it's probably not something you'd want to do at this level of detail on every single mini in an army. But for a commander or other centerpiece model, or a display or competition piece it's a good way to make them stand out from other plastic models because it gives immediate and actual physical depth to the sculpt that would otherwise be lacking. If you do a lot of pinwashes or washes otherwise you've no doubt prepared a figure that has parts on it you know are going to be a pain in the ass and won't take well. That's where the scriber is your friend. What's also nice about this, is that you can practice it without concern by using spare bits on sprues you are very likely to ever use.

Also, someone was asking about paint schemes for a skaven in the last thread and I was at a loss. They didn't like the one they picked

I tried doing this today because I'm trying to settle on a scheme for this guy too. You can just take a picture of the figure and use an image generator to try different schemes on demand.

Here is an example with the figure I just posted. I was trying to decide between these two schemes so I had a mock up generated.

Easy way to save time and paint imo

having hands can help in scenarios where you need to pick stuff up. Battletech really benefits from scenarios where there's varied objectives. Stuff like scouting and raiding show off a lot of mechs that struggle in a "kill everything" match. playing the game like a long war makes it a ton more fun. Have a board I made

This is a really nice kit. GW know their mechs.
Only thing I'm disappointed by is the lack of leg poseability. There are only 2 positions you can place the legs in without serious modification. They don't even have knee joints!

>>98037346
Yeah the new sentinel has the same problem. The old plastic sentinel was a fairly bare bones kit but the legs were almost fully poseable.
>>
>>98037415
The legs were one piece parts with a ball joint at the "hip" and the "ankle". There was no option to pose them besides that.
Not the worst model in terms of posability, but there was no option to change the angle of the knee or any of the hydraulics or the cable.

Not on my experience Vallejo air alum looked better than anything including law, wax, ect, it looks like real metal to the eye
>>
>>98036646
It's actually because it's AIRBRUSHED metallics that look better than BRUSH PAINTED metallics.
Acrylics are typically brush painted, lacquers are typically airbrushed.
Airbrushing lets you layer up multiple thin, even coats, whereas you never get proper coverage with brush painting.
>>
>>98038063
following your logic, it wouldnt matter if theyre acrylic or not, as long as theyre applied by airbrush
>>
>>98038072
That's exactly what I'm implying.
If you airbrush any decent water-based metallic paint, it will look just as good as an equivalent-quality lacquer paint, assuming you are using all the same steps.
>>
>>98038086
then why recommend lacquers at all?
>>
>>98038089
I'm not the anon that was insisting acrylics were shit.

>>
>>98038098
NTA, but I mean... Out of oils, enamels, lacquers, and acrylics, acrylics are definitely the shittiest ones. The only good thing about them is that they dry fast and are non-toxic. They get mogged hard in every other characteristic.

their biggest advantage is not requiring dedicated thinners

Well, if anyone does buy them, please share your thoughts. I am heavily skeptical, but if they really do have something different here, maybe it will bump other manufacturers to take notes and the general quality of synthetics will improve. I would recommend ditching the sets and buying the model kit and tools separately. For a cement, get Tamiya Thin. Only buy it once for the handy bottle with a brush, and then buy Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner - it's a larger, much cheaper bottle of exactly the same stuff, so you can use it to refill your cement. As for paints, check some scale modelling forums for actual paints needed for the Corsair, not this three paints meme that will be maybe good for a partial basecoat.

As for the model itself, I don't really do planes that much anymore, but I vaguely remember people liking Tamiya Corsair in this scale.

Generally speaking if you google something along the liens of "best 1/72 f4u" there's probably a thread or two on some forum where it's been discussed.
Second,a s another anon mentioned: Scalemates. Checking these kits there we see that the Revell one is based on tooling from 2014. Revell overall ain't exactly the top of the board (though always check out specific kits instead of just going by the brand, many brands have good kits in their lineup, almost all of them have at least some shoddy kits for sale), but at that age it should be entirely ok. The Hobby Boss one is from 2006, and IIRC 1/72 aircraft from HB back then were very simplified affairs. So in this case I would guess Revell, though as I said, do google things.
And third, as another anon said, these ktis are, eh... In the Revell one the glue is good (you'll want tome "extra thin" type stuff as well, or rather as your main glue, but regular thickness stuff is also good to keep handy and Revell's is perfectly fine), but those paints are very eh and the brush should probably be donated/exiled to your local kindergarten ASAP. The HB kit appears to have good glue (looks to be regular thickness as well, brush-in-the-cap bottle instead of needle nose, personal preference what you prefer) and paints (well, dunno how they are to hand paint, they seem a bit airbrush-focused to me), but I suspect the brush there's shite as well. All in all better to get the kit and tools/paint separate so you get the tools/paint you actually want and need. The paints included are also pretty far form all the paints the kit really calls for as well.

>>
>>98039388
Just drop them into the concentrate right from the bottle, don't dilute it. Best to use a glass container, I've used food grade plastic containers in the past and while they didn't exactly break down right away they got really soft over time and eventually leaked. Be sure to wear rubber dish washing gloves, not latex or nitrile and wash your hands afterwards. The concentrate will give you a mild chemical burn if it gets on your hands to long and will make your skin peel and itch for a day or two, besides that basic safety like ventilation and eye protection. As a test I tossed some of my varnished practice models into a jar and left them for 11 months, the varnish paint and primer had all sloughed off, super glue bonds broke, and the plastic had no issues/softness or anything.

There is 0% chance that squidmar actually makes his own paint brushes, he just contracts them out. That means they are just like every other synthetic brush being made in whatever factory they are cranked out in.

>>98038492
To the best of my knowledge all synthetic bristles are made through extrusion. So they have the inherent weakness that then they are damaged they curl because of strain and tensions. Hair on the other hand is much more complex, each hair in itself is like a bundle of smaller hairs that are all tied together with a sheath. So when hair gets damaged it tends to just sluff off and get shorter. Sometimes it can form slit ends however but energy that is still less annoying than the synthetic curling. Look up some SEM photos and you will see what I mean.

Looking at the mini on the left there you could go with the black grey of his helmet as the main colour for vehicles, with blue insignia/company/markings. If you need an accent colour or want two-tone camo then grab the grey from his gun.

There's *officially* no kits for them, and the rules at this point only reflect Cadians - Catechans - Krieg.
I could do a kitbash but the kriegs look so good right out the box. Same with the tanks.

I'll just leave it ambiguous. Not like the rules prevent me from taking Krieg battle line and tanks right?

Scrub a bit as you go. 7 days of soaking followed by a scrub for 7 minutes will be less effective as 7 days of soaking where you scrubbed 1 minute each day. The goal of the scrubbing should be to lift off loose paint and expose deeper layers for the degreaser to get to work on.

Also if stripping plastic models primed with rattle can you will never get all the primer off as it will have etched into the plastic and become one. So don’t work yourself to death thinking you need to.
>>
>>98040595
Good to know, thank you. I just popped the ebay rescues and two painted minis in. I am uncertain how the ebay stuff was primed but I know I used rattlecan Chaos Black way, way back in the day on my personal minis. Thankfully the entire army will be primed in black so not a big deal.

I thought you guys said there was no difference between different primers and paints
>>
>>98040720
Well whoever said this was a liar or just doesn’t know better (probably that). But it’s true for airbrush primer, that shits just paint. Now mind you it’s still paint specifically formulated to work nice for priming with, that is it will often shrink and self level, so it’s still nice to use. If your primer can’t chemically bond with the surface, then it’s just paint. The accelerant in rattle can acts as an etchant on plastic minis, if this were in your airbrush primer it would likely ruin your airbrush.
>>
>>98040752

what about automotive primer? that's applied with a spray gun and it has all kinds of chemical shit in it.
>>
>>98039321
Buy both, make a youtube vid comparing them. Profit?
>>
>>98040885
Automotive primer etches (literally dissolves) the surface of the metal to impart a very very fine microtexture allow for surpurb adhesion. I don’t think they can hope to achieve the same kind of bond that you can get with plastics because the chemistries are so different, but I’m also not a material scientist. I’ll show you a photo of a mini I stripped (in LA totally awesome) showing off what I mean when I get home. The same primer was used on the model which is a Forgeworld hybrid kit, and on the resin parts the primer came right off in sheets. That you could pick off with your finger nail (like how you can with all airbrush primers, scraping it to expose the bare plastic beneath. For the plastic parts of the kit they are all black still, but I’m spots where I scrubbed a lot you can see almost a translucency where I nearly wore off the top layer of atoms, but it’s clearly not a distinct layer of paint that can be picked off.

I tried doing the oil wash on just the chest and legs bit. The wash itself was fine, but the mineral oil ended up dissolving some of the blue tack and it got all over the model. I was able to clean it up with a q tip, but I would definitely recommend removing any blue tac before an oil wash if you are painting in subassembly.

I'm not really happy with it but I'm like seven coats of this colour shift paint and while it is visible in person, the phone photos just aren't catching the light in the right way to make it obvious so it just looks like a glossy black lump. In person it's got a pearlescent purple hue to it though. I might go back over the higher exposed points with a few more coats to make them catch the eye more than the other surfaces.

>>
>>98042480
is that really the right move here? if you darken the shadows you're basically increasing the contrast, which for a single color object is effectively trying to show it as being more reflective. the cloth gives the impression of being wool or something which should have a matte appearance. I think the other idea to make it look more flat is the better choice.

Yep, they're whitelabeled da vincis. But word is that da vinci put actual r&d into it rather than just whitelabeling them, which is where the price comes in. No idea what constitutes that r&d. Like I said in a different post, I'm skeptical but curious, mainly because no one seems to have tried iterating on them in a while. You seem to know something about brush manufacturing so maybe that is interesting to you.

Yeah, obviously.
He's not out here catching weasels in the siberian wilderness, plucking out their tail hairs, and binding them into brushes for you.
He was always going to go through an established manufacturer, what matters is whether or not the brushes are special in some way, or are just relabelled version of what the manufacturer already make.
