Is 40k cosplay acceptable WIP? It’s not so much a ‘mini’ as a ‘macro’. Doing it based off my guys color scheme so I can bury this hobby with one last bit of enthusiasm.
Boring part done
I am trying out the AK camo putty with my devilfish. it works really well so far. I still have 2 more colors to add.
>>98053975Told ya, anon. Luv me some cammo putty. >I still have 2 more colors to add. Can't wait for the final result.
>>98053942no promises but i can try to save my pics a tad larger in the future if i remember
>>98053956sure why not
Finished building a gunwagon a few days ago and made a decent amount of progress painting it, its mostly just the engine and the gun(s) that need work now
>>98054084i like it very ruggedremember to dirty that one this way -transfer abowe the right front wheel too and youre golden
>>98054128Ty lad, the pigments do need shifting around and fiddling with a bit, the only ones that have been fixed so far are on the wheels and the tracks, plus inside the truck which is still kinda damp
>>98053574https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/3M
>>98053956I don't think anyone would have an issue with that except maybe one sperg so go ahead, I'd definitely be interested in seeing it
>>98053956Sure, this is the "WIP" thread, not /just/ the "mini painting" thread.
>>98053975Anon, you're subassembling a part with a huge gap between another part that you're going to have to fill, why didn't you assemble the hull?
>>98054451because I wanted to paint the interior of the devilfish
>>98054532did you paint the camo all around
>>98054573yeah, i did the camo on all the outside parts of the model, i just posted the biggest piece
I know the classic questions is>what are some GOOD minipainting youtubers? But now I ask youWhat are some of the worst, most retarded, unskilled, dogslop paintjobs, product shilling, meme technique promoter, drama making, youtubers you ever seen?
>>98054625midwinter minis
>>98054625Go back to your containment thread, you silly queer.

>>98054638>>>/vt/>>>/soc/>>>/lbgt/>>>/40kg/You are not craftsperg, but you are just as retarded. Go back and take your cancer with you.
>>98054638sure some anons watch youtubers paint their miniseveryone has to start somewhere and these days its youtube tutorials, i think
>>98054638>I just want to hatewatch some retards.Look in the mirror.
>>98054638>I just want to hatewatch some retardsholy shit fuck off
>>98054625I'm not sure I could name any names, but when I zone out and shamefully scroll youtube shorts, you know you see the same 5 gimmicky elminiaturista videos over and over again, but you also see people who are clearly trying to content farm with a similar style of video, but who obviously fucking suck at painting and I get second hand embarrassment from them. No idea what the channels are but I've come across it a handful of times.
>>98054373Context, it's a branch on the /tg/ tree.So as long as it's within the topic of /tg/
>>98054714What's wrong with elminiaturista
>>98054714>you also see people who are clearly trying to content farm with a similar style of video, but who obviously fucking suck at painting and I get second hand embarrassment from themkek yeah I see so many of these guys both on yt and ig and I feel bad, but then again good for them if they're doing it just to share their passion and aren't actually deluded into otherwise.
>>98054738Nothing really, he's a better example, I just don't really like his content because while it's cool, but the stuff that trends is just gimmicky OSL airbrush tricks. I guess I think it lacks substance. But I'm nitpicking there I don't really have an issue with his content, just that people will watch that having never painted anything and be like "this is what high level miniature painting is like" when that's not really true.
so when did it start and what was the edition/age where painting tutorials were mainly online instead of on the pages of white dwarf or armybooks/codicesimho its way worse now because that vast amount of tutorials leaves little room for imagination or growthnow everyone just goes trough hundreds of painting tutorials without making their mind instead of seeing dozen of painted minis with suggested paints and using their imagination
>>98054711Give up and use TMM (metallic paint) not NMM (regular paints made to look reflective)
Finished a skeleton, have a terrible fridge pic.
>>98054815TMM is doing NMM with metallic paint
>>98054825paintlets wanted a word for just painting with metallics, so for a lot of people TMM not just means using metallic paints in any way.
>>98053977>The advice he gave was pretty solid: if you're not working on it right now, put it away. It can be demoralising to sit down at your work desk and face 30 un- or partially-panted models when you're really only interested in getting the five ladz at the front finished this weekend.Except you said you had your unprimed minis "on the shelf" gathering dustThe shelf is for finished work, unpainted stuff goes in a box or a drawer or some such, if it's gathering dust you're doing it wrong.
>>98054823Clearly he's only half done.
>>98054910Couldn't find the other half, unfortunately.
>>98054916It's in the crisper.
>>98054823why's he in the fridge though
>>98054910
>>98054738Nothing, but there should be a disclaimer about the fluo/glowing paints he uses. They are not lightfast, and will get btfo soon, especially if you let sun touch it in any way. >>98054938Think about, fridge light gives a fairly nice, neutral lighting setup from the get go.
Current fugean WIP, painting it up for a friend I’m going to a teams tournament with. It’s a nice change from the usual of marines and chaos marines.
>>98053034they paint everything from real tanks and guns to prepainted figurines. I guarantee all of them are prepped before painting.>>98053035your argument is anecdotal. you are saying "well I don't know anyone whose house burned down from improperly disposed of oil paint rags so that means it's not possible.">>98053041you can't see oil. you can test for it by putting the part under a stream of water from the sink though.

I need some cheap beater brushes for metallics and stuff. Are these decent? It’s $5 for 5. If you have other recommendations, post em
>>98055229Opacity has nothing to do with saturation.
More progress on the Daemon Prince
>>98055416It does if you want a 1-coat paint and expect good coverage when the only way you're going to get that is by adding pigments that desaturate your paint.
>>98055417Woah. Love that gradient.

>>98055445>anon writes 4chan posts standing up
>>98055005they don't look as good
>>98055416Yes it does. You are changing saturation, and likely hue and value. You need opacity to do so. The more opacity you have the more you can change per layer.
>>98055417i hate the rim but i love the skin
>>98055138Weird how they're able to do this then huh
My spray booth (and new compressor) arrived. Jesus for something that "folds up", this thing is stupidly large.
>>98055855show ours and i can show you mine
started painting my forgefiend
>>98056105>tsons anonHow do you do your metallics?
Didn't feel like painting until my paint order shows up so I got more shit ready for priming. Don't mind the diarrhea on the napkin
>>98056150I swear I'll remember to make a proper guide one day but basically>basecoat with a metallic of your choice>wash all over>relayer with the metallic avoiding the recesses and parts that are facing down>slowly mix your highlight color into the basecoat and layer it towards the parts where metal would actually reflect light>edge highlight upwards facing edges that actually catch lightThis works for gold and bronze, if I wanted to do some higher effort silver I'd probably use washes or contrasts and shade it down from a bright silver maybe. If you're not sure where to place your highlights you can take a picture of your basecoated mini under a light source and use that as reference.
>>98056221>wash all over>relayer with the metallic avoiding the recesses and parts that are facing downwhy do people do this instead of just only putting the wash where you want it to begin with?
>>98056343yeah you can do that too but for me it's usually faster this way
>>98056343The edge of a wash tends to dry with a hard line.
>>98056358not unles you just put a blob and let it dry, just barely feather it and you are good
>>98056343Better yet, why no oil or enamel wash. But it ultimately comes down to personal preference and what workflow you enjoy.
Got my centaurs ready today.
What primer do you use for painting entirely in oil? I've read from art sources that priming in acrylic gesso is a bad idea because of the difference in flexibility, but plastic is flexible anyway so maybe that ship has sailed.
>>98056415I thought it was more about different levels of shrinkage between the two layers of paint? No experience though.
>>98055024I'm calling these two finished.
I love how cheap perry miniatures are for messing with for any project. Bless the maker of Turnip for making a game around model ranges that are dirt cheap that you can make a warband just for friends to try the game with.
I feel like I'm having a midlife crisis. I've bought so much hobby shit in the past week.
>>98056824What did you buy ?
>>98056824haul pics?
>>98056840>>98056834No pics, and not all of it's here. I just added it up and in the past month-ish I've spent 3200 on hobby stuff.
>>98056873>I've spent 3200 on hobby stuff.wtf that's crazy anything you really regret buying?
>>98056873...did you buy a warlord titan or something?
>>98056873I haven't spent that much in the entire last decade.

>>98057018I think that's just sort of how it comes out on a flat surface like that. It might appear to even out after it fully cures. I think it did that with one of my models when I did the breast plate over in black templar. But it could have also just been I saw it with fresher eyes the next day.

>>98054823Anon, where's your food? Did he eat it?
>>98057084>>98056997>>98056919It breaks down roughly into like 1k on lighting and lighting and camera accessories, 1k on paints and painting accessories, and 1k on models. Plus or minus a few hundred in any category and some rounding.
My painting is improving I think, this is my third model.
>>98057183This is my second
This is my first Dire Avenger

>>98057240
>>98053975i think i'm going to add a 4th color tomorrow
>>98057130>1k on lighting and camera accessories that makes sense actually, if anything, you got a good deal on those
>>98057130>>980572801k on paints and painting accessories is pretty ridiculous though, this is where you overspent.
>>98057285In my defense in that category I'm including spray booth, new compressor, and new airbrush which is making the bulk of it. The regular paint stuff and brushes was maybe 3-400.
>>98057248how are you adding colors one in different painting sessions? I have always done camo by progressively masking off more areas so you can't see the pattern until you remove all the masking at once.
Are there any Eldar kits with these vented masks, aside from the war walkers and the support weapons?
Posting my WIP gunslinger gorilla. Just the fur left and then ready to varnish it. I mostly focused on the poncho with this one and very happy with the results.
>>98057488hell yeah
>>98057488he looks awesome but please stop photographing your fucking hand along with your work. this is like /k/ and their fucking feet gun pics.
>>98057522if you only have overhead light, you have to hold the mini horizontal to get good lighting
>>98057488That highlighting you did on the fingers and poncho, is that sketching? Idk what it’s called but I’ve been wanting to dip my toe in. How did you shade the fur and guns btw >>98057509Hell yeah indeed
varnished, gems glossed, on the movement tray.
>>98057527Tbh im not sure what its called. I just prefer to paint that way rather than edge highlighting every little detail. The fur is abaddon black, diluted nuln, seraphim sepia + a layer of stormvermin fur. Its still going to be pushed brighter towards the top and the face. The guns is just iron warriors, nuln wash, iron warriors, stormhost silver.
>>98054825How is it called when you do TMM with non metallic paint

>>98058379And while that dries I'm working on an ebay rescure, making 2 berzerker squads out of picrel. Have to print the missing bits. Scraping ancient mould lines felt good.
>>98056791Niceyeah GW would be screwed if they went down in scale
>>98058519?? Scale creep is one of the oldest complaints about GW, a return to 25mm scale would benefit them. They'll likely do it someday as well, they can't keep creeping up until standard minis are 75mm or even just 54mm in size, so a return to smaller would give them another reason to invalidate existing plastic and make their consumers buy new shit, again.

>>98058583no
>>98058519More like they should be far more open to "interpretive factions" like most other games are, but thats more of a matter of who youre playing with than anything. Ive personally seen someone refuse to play a player that was using WW2 stuff for Guards. Fuck that kind of mentality, but at the same time, the aesthetic of the game starts to evaporate when enough people use whatever they want and dont have to stick to a particular look, but I dont care about that frankly, I love seeing peoples own creations rather than stuff they just bought, even in 40k you sometimes see some stuff people made themselves out of different bits.Again, thats a community issue rather than GW, probably. The way GW has it isnt about making your own stuff its about using their stuff because its cool looking. If I was to make a tabletop game myself I would base the factions around different historical eras and let people make whatever they want with whatever ranges or prints they want and just make their own fluff for why something with the aesthetics of the WW2 British Airborne are armed with swords aswell as guns and are wearing gasmasks, and are fighting against pike blocks of landsknecht robots lead by a group of necromancers made from generic wizard kits. Just make it look cool and give people room to be creative while sticking to a loose framework of what each factions is.

Making progress on my Petrifex Elite army, going to be batch painting today, but a question: I want to do the glowy green skulls inside the chests of the Morghasts, Zandtos, etc. Is it better to spray everyone with Mechanicus Standard Grey, then use a small brush to build to a light color on the slulls between the rib bones or (like with the cavalry) start light and work down to the Skavenblight dinge I’m using for the bones? How do you decide which direction to work?

How often, if at all, do you give your archers bow strings if they don't have them sculpted on? I only have one hero that has a bow that I'll glue a piece of fishing line on, but how much work is it to actually do and is it worth it to do on non-hero models?
Silly question, but a lot of you are from Yuu Key, so you may be authoritative on that: what texture paints would you recommend for accurate british soiltypes? Got myself loads of dark age vikings and saxons to paint, and I overstress details like that.

My favourite type is AK ultramatte mixed 1:1 with citadel contrast medium. It applies almost exactly like a shade paint and has a generous working time, so you just slap it on there and spread it a bit, then let it dry for 5mins.I'd recommend varnishing if you handle your minis a lot, but if you just display them and don't pick them up a lot then you're not really losing out by not varnishing. The thing that eventually drove me to try it was seeing the primer shining through on a mini that I was playing with a bunch in a tabletop game.So yeah, give it a shot. If it's a test/throwaway little man and you fuck it up, the worst that can happen is that you learn a method/varnish type that doesn't work. But it will probably look just fine, and you'll get over the hurdle.
>>98059955Some paints are shiny (inks, washes, AP paints), some are matt (AK, Scale 75). Without a varnish layer tying things together models can end up looking weird. Buy some brush-on and use selectively if they're just going to live on the shelf like mine.
First prototype for my storm troopers, just needs a little greenstuff for the joints and the cables. It's a bit rough, but it does what I needed. Mixed parts from Tempestus Scions and Solar Auxilia Veletaris.
>>98060035Plus another angle.
It took me 2 hours just to build a single model and clean all of the mold lines and sprue connections and fill gapsNot even a complicated model either
>>98060054genuinely how? I don't think I've ever spent more than an hour building a model and that was a big one. Anything smaller than 40mm shouldn't take over a half hour.
>>98060054welcome to the hobby.Just quite wargaming and get into display painting and busts if you like painting.
>>98059760Nice, what scale are these
>>98059955if you find the perfect varnish mix that doesn't fuck up you won't fear it anymore
>>98060054Just happens sometimes, you get more or less prominent and awkward lines and gates or more noticeable gaps, sometimes the glue doesn't take and you have to file it down and redo it, next thing you know it's been an hour and you've only got the upper half of one guy together.
>>98060054but did you enjoy it?
>>98060113I don't think anybody enjoys building models. It's not like legos. You build to get the fun part (painting).
>>98060316building gundams is fun. And sometimes I like doing conversions and custom mini stuff, but building stock warhammer is like pulling teeth.
>>98060316No, building and converting models is the most fun part.
>>98060316What a stupid take. >>98060319GW minis vary wildly in engineering quality. A lot of them are utterly dogshit through and through, made by complete mongoloids. Some are excellent, cleverly designed, and fun to both build and kitbash (like Ghostkeel).
>>98060316Building is definitely my favorite part
>>98060316I don’t know what enjoyment anyone gets out of scraping mold lines and gluing bits together. On the other hand, kitbashing and converting is like legos and is a lot of fun. Always a good time and it’s very satisfying to put your own touch on your army.
>>98060316Based take, i put together a team dark elves for bloodbowl recently and it was some of the most backward ass design I could imagine. Putting 2mm spikes next to molded spikes of the same size. Also built some Bandai Star Wars ship models and they all clicked together. Even the push fit shit that comes in starter sets was noticeably more difficult than the Bandai snap together shit
>>98060316I don't like the assembling per se, but I really like kitbashing and customizing the build
>>98059950>Can't say I feel like I know exactly what I'm doingyou based the thing black and by the look of it have gone plenty of coats and ideas so farbut why
I was thinking of using this nmm gold tutorial but it almost looks too brown? Thoughts? It may just be the fact that the image is so zoomed in.
>>98060935It looks fine. It'd read as metal on a full model. Some issues. I don't think your secondary reflections make a ton of sense though, and you could probably go a bit brighter on the main cylinder highlights. You can always glaze in some orange or yellow or even green to get it color-wise where you want to go to make sense with the rest of the model.
>>98060316this has to be bait
I rly want the anon with the harlequin diorama thing to post again, that thing was cool afcurrently cursed into being a bug by my job so no minis :<
>>98060854>but whyWhy what? Why that many coats?I layered up strong highlights before a basecoat because I wanted to find out and mark where a torch would be putting the most light. Then, I realized that leaving any recesses black is much less forgiving on a larger model, so I basecoated everything (unfortunately losing much of the original highlight). Chalk it up to inexperience/experimentation, I suppose.
I wish I had a GF i could ride into battle. Also any advice on how to do eyes would be greatly appreciated. I fucking suck at it.
>>98061035>eyesPicrel is pretty good. If you want it explained in a bit more detail, Vince Venturella has a video that helped it to click for me.
>>98061035My go to technique for eyes is to always have them looking to one side or the other, paint the full eyeball in the pupil/iris color and then just do a dot of light grey for the sclera in the lower corner opposite of where you want them looking.
>>98061099I do black shape, off-white shape, black circle, off-white dot (off-center). Simple but effective
>>98058384progress on ebay refresh/rescue
>>98061149you love to see it.meanwhile I'm farting around with the squat land sub still
>>98061035It is more fun to be ridden.
What color should I make the inside of the Devilfish? I was thinking like a contrast black because it's like small tiles on the floor, but if it's inside the tank, it will be hard to see so black doesn't make much sense. Maybe blue? Brown?
I'm reworking my hobby layout and man, I get that I still have to put some more things here and it's unused rn but so far it's looking pretty soulless.
>>98061402White or light gray interiors are classic in sci fi. A yellow or tan could look good as well.
>>98058900I still don't really get it can you walk me through your process like I'm retarded. you paint color 1, mask off some shapes, and paint color 2. now if you remove the masking you will have a 2 color pattern that's mainly color 2 with blobs of color 1. if you mask different areas and paint color 3 won't that wipe out color 1 and still result in a 2 color pattern that's now mainly color 3 with blobs of color 2?
>>98061456Lookz cosy, eventually the sovl-debris will build up again. >>98061310Gonna do any decals / markings?
>>98059965>Phones usually turn it horizontal if you don't edit the image in some way.idk about apple but android phones are set up so the true output orientation will be with the top left corner of the picture matching the top right corner of the phone. you are supposed to hold the phone sideways as if it was a real camera with the shutter button under your right thumb. in other words if you don't want your shit to be sideways stop taking pictures in portrait orientation.
>>98057248Classic sculpt and nice even paint , feels nice to look at already
>>98060935>paint something brown>wtf why does it look brownstop gaslighting yourself with stupid memes. if you want it to look gold then paint it gold.
>>98060935it looks fine to me
>>98061661i hope this image can help
>>98061824the black being the AK camouflage putty(or whatever masking solution you are using)
>>98059658Test fit with blutack>>98060316When I built the 3e BB starter set, there were 0 mouldlines on the sprues and the nubs cleaned off smoothly. Those models were a dream to build, and I finally understood how people can get pleasure from building. Most of my gaming group prefer building to painting, and I realised it's because none of them give a shit about mouldlines. Drives me mad looking at their models and seeing how much they could improve if they cared to try
>thinking about magnetizing the bases of every single model I own so I can match the base to the particular mat I'm usingis this autism
>>98061909>owns plastic soldiers>posts on 4chanlet's use some deductive reasoning here...
>>98061909I'm the oppositeI prefer black plain bases and everyone here roasts me for it
Anybody have any interesting non-blue plasma color examples? I'm getting ready to paint my Death Guard and want something visually interesting. I know I've seen acid green and red done before.
>>98062057Examples on hand? Not really. But purple is always a good idea.
I fucking hate painting minis.
>>98062089Same. But it's all I have.
>>98062089i paint so i can finally play but i never ever get to play so i just paint some more so i have what to choose from no idea what motivates people who play regularly
Nagash is done.
>>98062146soVL
Perhaps the real Master of Executions was the friends we made along the way..
>>98060935Can you direct me to that tutorial? Im curently trying to paint some gold nmm and failing miserably.
I'd like to take a moment to appreciate this box of skulls. Very subtle and few mould lines on this casting.
Buying that FDM printer was a good decision. I was printing resin for years, but had no idea how pleasing it is to make those rally big chonks of plastic. This is the start for a full 3x3 Urban table, with hopefully lots of verticality. The house will get another floor, and then i start another section of plattforms/bridges.
>>98062057yellow maybe? Its unusual, but works i think.
>>98062217Cool, it really makes one wonder why anyone plays with L shaped rubbish terrain in this day and age.
>>98062211It really is the best box GW have ever made. I've had mine for ages, use bits from it all the time and I'm still not halfway through it
>>98062231Contemptor show and tell skull collection haha. Very based base anon.
>>98062231I wanted to do something like this, but I stacked a bunch together to make a mold of the base of skulls and recast it so I didn't have to use like 50 skulls for 1 base.
my models will be basedand when people ask>based on what?I will tell them "pic related"
>>98061686>eventually the sovl-debris will build up again. It is in fact already a mess.
Sat down and painted a bit today as long as my damaged foot would tolerate. Got one bit of scatter terrain done-ish and leaving it to sit overnight as I usually do so I can look at it fresh tomorrow. Also sprue goo'd a 3d print to knock down layer lines.>>98061937I'm also a base purist. To me the idea of putting a model on a particular base means that it will look out of place in almost every other scenario and I don't like that. I'd rather just have it be a flat black disc that I can theatre-of-mind as blending into the terrain it sits on.
>>98062225This. Especially how foolproof printers are these days with autoleveling and all the other features. Some tiny L's need less storage, thats a valid argument tho.
>>980622623d print with the sprue goo. My process is to usually primer coat it since the black contrasts with the white filament to make flaws more visible, then I hit it with sprue goo over the top. I considered trying other alternatives like a clear coat or a UV resin but those have their own issues; clear coat takes too long to dry and tends to have pooling issues, UV resin can be set instantly but getting it on in a thin enough coat without it pooling requires juggling and I don't like the results.Sprue goo has the benefits of curing quickly, being immediately visible as to what I've done as it's semi-opaque/clear and if I fuck it up I can just hit it with undiluted solvent to thin it and move it around/remove it entirely. Once the goo is on I hit it with another primer coat and repeat the process until I'm happy with the imperfections. On organic minis it's really not an issue and I rarely bother with multiple passes but on stuff like the above because it's all manufactured geometries attaining a good surface finish kinda becomes a bit more important.
>>98061937stay strong king. terrain bases are gay. you will know you're in the right when everyone else is playing with their snow bases on a jungle table.
>>98062217it's a shame that the terrain rules fucking suck so a table like that will have tons of stupid interactions like units standing under the bridge being able to freely assault units on top of it and the bridge blocking los of units on the roof of the building.
>>98062339& black plastic bases on jungle terrain is better how ?
>>98062262that's pretty impressive for painting with an injured foot. have you ever considered that holding the brush with your hand might be easier though?>>98062349the base is just an abstraction, like the green circles that appear around your units when you select them in a video game.
>>98060935The color of glossy metal depends on its surroundings.
>>98062339Kek thanks.>snow base in a jungle environment Yeah that’s another albeit smaller reason I don’t like basing. I like painting the model itself not making little landscapes for them to stand on >>98062357>>98062349Black uniform bases remind me of the trophy stands from super smash brothers. They all had the same golden base, idk it just feels better and I like the uniformity
>>98061695Crazy spotted
>>98062357You jest but my foot is swollen to twice the size of the other one and I'm meant to keep it elevated above my heart to reduce the recovery time. Sitting and painting for an hour or two makes it even worse. Which sucks because I essentially am not supposed to do anything, which normally would be a great opportunity to get a lot of painting knocked out, but not so with this bullshit.
>>98056709Neat, what are the head and arms from for the Imp? I recognise the body as a Juan Diaz daemonette.
>>98062057
>>98062407Ah yes, the glorious jelly worm blaster
>>98062346Oh, just because i used some Dark Eldar for scale on the pic wasn't meant to imply its for 40k. I might use it for Kill Team, but mostly other games like Stargrave, 5Parsecs and i also want to try OPR at some point.
>>98062424He's painting Death Guard, they love worms.
>>98061402For interiors, IRL tanks usually use some offwhite color, ranging from ivory to very, very, very light green. Walls are painted with these colors, apart from the hatches, which are painted in the same color as the outside. Tau are supposedly the sensible, rational ayylmaos, so I wouldn't stray too far from this idea. That said, I usually cheat on the hatch paint, since it creates a bit of a visual interest.
