Nothing really, he's a better example, I just don't really like his content because while it's cool, but the stuff that trends is just gimmicky OSL airbrush tricks. I guess I think it lacks substance. But I'm nitpicking there I don't really have an issue with his content, just that people will watch that having never painted anything and be like "this is what high level miniature painting is like" when that's not really true.

so when did it start and what was the edition/age where painting tutorials were mainly online instead of on the pages of white dwarf or armybooks/codices
imho its way worse now because that vast amount of tutorials leaves little room for imagination or growth
now everyone just goes trough hundreds of painting tutorials without making their mind instead of seeing dozen of painted minis with suggested paints and using their imagination

I swear I'll remember to make a proper guide one day but basically
>basecoat with a metallic of your choice
>wash all over
>relayer with the metallic avoiding the recesses and parts that are facing down
>slowly mix your highlight color into the basecoat and layer it towards the parts where metal would actually reflect light
>edge highlight upwards facing edges that actually catch light
This works for gold and bronze, if I wanted to do some higher effort silver I'd probably use washes or contrasts and shade it down from a bright silver maybe. If you're not sure where to place your highlights you can take a picture of your basecoated mini under a light source and use that as reference.
>>
>>98056221
>wash all over
>relayer with the metallic avoiding the recesses and parts that are facing down
why do people do this instead of just only putting the wash where you want it to begin with?
>>
>>98056343
yeah you can do that too but for me it's usually faster this way
>>
>>98056343
The edge of a wash tends to dry with a hard line.
>>
>>98056358
not unles you just put a blob and let it dry, just barely feather it and you are good
>>
>>98056343
Better yet, why no oil or enamel wash. But it ultimately comes down to personal preference and what workflow you enjoy.

What primer do you use for painting entirely in oil? I've read from art sources that priming in acrylic gesso is a bad idea because of the difference in flexibility, but plastic is flexible anyway so maybe that ship has sailed.

>I just prefer to paint that way rather than edge highlighting every little detail.
Same, edge highlighting is something I find myself rarely doing cause the definition and smooth transitions just aren’t there compared to layering

>>98057748
Brighter brights and darker darks. Post your inspo if you have one, or something that is very similar to what you’re trying to achieve and we can help you better

Your transitions are smooth but they’re very similar. Thats to say that it all reads as the same color. Too much orange, but not enough yellow in the center or red in the outer edges
Are you trying to do hot lava streaks? Remember the hottest parts on lava swords or flowing magma/fire are white or a very very pale yellow

Cosy picture and awesome paint!

Waiting for this massive lump to dry. There's a 3d printed disk in there with a space for a big washer, not solid milliput. Will be sanded smooth, it really had to be that big to counteract the weight. Can't even imagine the topples with the metal wings on.

yeah GW would be screwed if they went down in scale
>>
>>98058519
?? Scale creep is one of the oldest complaints about GW, a return to 25mm scale would benefit them.
They'll likely do it someday as well, they can't keep creeping up until standard minis are 75mm or even just 54mm in size, so a return to smaller would give them another reason to invalidate existing plastic and make their consumers buy new shit, again.

More like they should be far more open to "interpretive factions" like most other games are, but thats more of a matter of who youre playing with than anything. Ive personally seen someone refuse to play a player that was using WW2 stuff for Guards. Fuck that kind of mentality, but at the same time, the aesthetic of the game starts to evaporate when enough people use whatever they want and dont have to stick to a particular look, but I dont care about that frankly, I love seeing peoples own creations rather than stuff they just bought, even in 40k you sometimes see some stuff people made themselves out of different bits.Again, thats a community issue rather than GW, probably. The way GW has it isnt about making your own stuff its about using their stuff because its cool looking.

If I was to make a tabletop game myself I would base the factions around different historical eras and let people make whatever they want with whatever ranges or prints they want and just make their own fluff for why something with the aesthetics of the WW2 British Airborne are armed with swords aswell as guns and are wearing gasmasks, and are fighting against pike blocks of landsknecht robots lead by a group of necromancers made from generic wizard kits. Just make it look cool and give people room to be creative while sticking to a loose framework of what each factions is.

>I've never varnished a model because I'm scared of ruining hours of work. How do I get over this?
I felt like this for a while and got over it by applying varnish to a test model. It was painless and simple as soon as I actually did it.

There are a couple of different forms of varnish. Do you have a spraycan? I've heard that those can have mixed results. My favourite type is AK ultramatte mixed 1:1 with citadel contrast medium. It applies almost exactly like a shade paint and has a generous working time, so you just slap it on there and spread it a bit, then let it dry for 5mins.

I'd recommend varnishing if you handle your minis a lot, but if you just display them and don't pick them up a lot then you're not really losing out by not varnishing.

The thing that eventually drove me to try it was seeing the primer shining through on a mini that I was playing with a bunch in a tabletop game.

So yeah, give it a shot. If it's a test/throwaway little man and you fuck it up, the worst that can happen is that you learn a method/varnish type that doesn't work. But it will probably look just fine, and you'll get over the hurdle.
>>
>>98059955
Some paints are shiny (inks, washes, AP paints), some are matt (AK, Scale 75). Without a varnish layer tying things together models can end up looking weird. Buy some brush-on and use selectively if they're just going to live on the shelf like mine.

Why what? Why that many coats?
I layered up strong highlights before a basecoat because I wanted to find out and mark where a torch would be putting the most light. Then, I realized that leaving any recesses black is much less forgiving on a larger model, so I basecoated everything (unfortunately losing much of the original highlight). Chalk it up to inexperience/experimentation, I suppose.

Sat down and painted a bit today as long as my damaged foot would tolerate. Got one bit of scatter terrain done-ish and leaving it to sit overnight as I usually do so I can look at it fresh tomorrow. Also sprue goo'd a 3d print to knock down layer lines.

>>98061937
I'm also a base purist. To me the idea of putting a model on a particular base means that it will look out of place in almost every other scenario and I don't like that. I'd rather just have it be a flat black disc that I can theatre-of-mind as blending into the terrain it sits on.

3d print with the sprue goo. My process is to usually primer coat it since the black contrasts with the white filament to make flaws more visible, then I hit it with sprue goo over the top. I considered trying other alternatives like a clear coat or a UV resin but those have their own issues; clear coat takes too long to dry and tends to have pooling issues, UV resin can be set instantly but getting it on in a thin enough coat without it pooling requires juggling and I don't like the results.

Sprue goo has the benefits of curing quickly, being immediately visible as to what I've done as it's semi-opaque/clear and if I fuck it up I can just hit it with undiluted solvent to thin it and move it around/remove it entirely. Once the goo is on I hit it with another primer coat and repeat the process until I'm happy with the imperfections.

On organic minis it's really not an issue and I rarely bother with multiple passes but on stuff like the above because it's all manufactured geometries attaining a good surface finish kinda becomes a bit more important.

Kek thanks.

>snow base in a jungle environment
Yeah that’s another albeit smaller reason I don’t like basing. I like painting the model itself not making little landscapes for them to stand on

Black uniform bases remind me of the trophy stands from super smash brothers.

They all had the same golden base, idk it just feels better and I like the uniformity

You jest but my foot is swollen to twice the size of the other one and I'm meant to keep it elevated above my heart to reduce the recovery time. Sitting and painting for an hour or two makes it even worse. Which sucks because I essentially am not supposed to do anything, which normally would be a great opportunity to get a lot of painting knocked out, but not so with this bullshit.

Neat, what are the head and arms from for the Imp? I recognise the body as a Juan Diaz daemonette.

Oh, just because i used some Dark Eldar for scale on the pic wasn't meant to imply its for 40k. I might use it for Kill Team, but mostly other games like Stargrave, 5Parsecs and i also want to try OPR at some point.

For interiors, IRL tanks usually use some offwhite color, ranging from ivory to very, very, very light green. Walls are painted with these colors, apart from the hatches, which are painted in the same color as the outside. Tau are supposedly the sensible, rational ayylmaos, so I wouldn't stray too far from this idea.

That said, I usually cheat on the hatch paint, since it creates a bit of a visual interest.
