Is it a good idea to really put much thought toward basic level techniques? They seem to cost a hell of a lot for the benefits they give relative to the big guns.

It's more relevant in Flow with the Special Series and Conduction, as I think you can make a full build just with those honestly. The misc category has Battle Flow which is easily one of the strongest basics you can get, but even Seismic Strike and Reclaimation palm in Core are pretty good. Phase I think has the weakest basics overall but that's just me.The strongest are mostly the racial techniques which can do something no one else can and are pretty easy to include as long as you choose said race.

It was more about exploration and adventure in strange enviroments and maybe ancient ruins to find artifacts, not growing a colony, the base would be either already formed or very in the background. Killing children might in theory be a cheap/exploitative method to achieve that, but it sure works, and in this context it didn't feel like too much.Now for, let's call it part two, I did not expect the reunion to start with a fight, but it made sense as a way to verify his identity. The tempo of the combat matched the situation, a couple high tension exchanges to measure one another. Despite how fast it was, it revealed a big part of the skillset, and in MPs it's always nice to display characters like that.For the gesture issue, I don't think it's an issue at all. While you can use the techniques without it, if you do try for that power up from gestures/phrases, getting interrupted should not only deny the power up but also prevent the activation altogether makes sense to me.
