You'd probably be better off just changing the cap instead of having it as an initial modifier. Similar case for racial penalties. 5e doesn't really give out high enough starting scores to account for any major flat penalty like that, but simply making it so a character could only get 19 Strength instead of 20 doesn't change anything until later in the game.

Doubly so if you're not rolling for scores, because then there isn't even a bell curve argument to be had.

Cheers anon. It is something that I recall was a thing back in very early editions, though I think it translates well to 5e due to ability scores being rather compressed.
In some ways it does a better job than initial bonuses or penalties, because it means that the strongest Orc can have higher Strength than the strongest halfing, instead of both of them just capping at 20 with the Orc getting a headstart.

A thought experiment for knowledgeable and powergamer anons who are into it:
considering most if not all official 5e campaigns are designed for parties of a certain size, if you had to build a single character to try and face such a campaign alone, however difficult or even impossible it could be, how would you go about your build, hypothetically?

A few considerations:
>preferably 5.5/2024, but arguments could be made for 5.0/2014 if the build is cool/OP enough (looking at you, hexblade dip)
>no need to specify all build details, just the broad idea and highlights are fine
>obviously not all campaigns are equally tough, feel free to focus on one or a few if relevant for the build, any relevant homebrew campaigns are also fair game
>circumventing encounters successfully (for ex. using enchantments, rushing or sneaking in and out doing the quest without killing anyone, among other possibilities) counts as defeating the necessary enemies when relevant (and possible) for XP rewards (except when the fight is absolutely essential to the plot), so builds focused on that could work
>with encounters or CRs staying the same, the XP reward is the same even if funneled into one character, so level advancement would be quicker
>same goes for treasure and rewards
>preferably no sidekicks or NPC help, at least most of the time

This is probably the most impactful assumption. A lot of adventure modules just state 'each character gains X experience' or 'each character gains a level' instead of having the DM calculate.

For example, the initial section of Lost Mines (getting to the entrance of the goblin caves) is 75 xp per character, but the ambush of 4 goblins is 200 total xp. If you can kill the 2 goblins outside the entrance, then that's already level 2 before you've step foot in the first dungeon.

That means that the key point is probably just going to be what you do for 1st level where you won't yet have the level advantage.
And looking strictly at 2024 I could see the answer actually ending up as something weird, like taking a single level in Barbarian before moving over to a full caster.
Pointbuy can get you 16 14 12 8 16 8, taking Tough as an Origin feat gives you 15 HP at level 1. Functionally doubled to 30 while raging, and because it lasts 10 minutes if you maintain it with a Bonus action and refreshes on a short rest, you can use it early and often to brute-force your way through enough low-level encounters to gain a level.
From there, you start going Druid from level 2 onward. Find Familiar and Wildshape to scout, eventually go Moon Druid so you can turn into a beast while raging, and you gradually get better spells. Eventually because you're leveling up faster than a party normally would, you'll reach a tipping point where you have spells the module simply wasn't designed for. Druid is also a prepared caster, so you can scout out in beast form and adjust your spells towards what you need.

Race choice should probably just be whatever gives you the best resistances towards whatever's common in the module. Or potentially just Human so you can grab Crafter and the Arcana skill for making magic items in the long run.

Multiple foes will really have the Action Economy and usually statistics (for hitting, crits etc.) working to their advantage, so the inherently increased difficulty of most encounters would not make it that unfair to reward our hero proportionally, I think.

That seems like a solid build idea.
I've played with the idea of having a Chainlock Familiar scout ahead invisibly (and carefully) and then use all the gained info to one's advantage as much as possible, with summons from spells and magic items helping out in the Action Economy further in the career.
Your Barbarian 1 Moon Druid X take, however, seems very promising in the way it brute forces the low Hitpoint issue at lower levels (as like you alluded to a well placed shot or critical can definitely down a low level character).
Indeed many races would bring nice boons and the Human's extra Origin Feat could be very strategic - I for example really like Magic Initiate or Alert.
On that note, wouldn't making magic items in the long run be doable without Crafter, considering proper proficiencies and/or a (Common) Manyfold Tool (which of course would have to be obtained or crafted somehow)?

I think at the start of out of the abyss there's some narrative roleplaying and stuff then a Demon attack, and then you escape into the wilderness.

Plus, you can get a bunch of jabroni guys to help body block / tank hits and assist with shit off the start, and I don't think any of them are designed to take your EXP, when you escape there's like 150exp per player which is good (600) + the Vrock if you kill it for another 575 (level 3)

I'd pick rogue for thief, because i love them, and sneak around w/ alert, probably a wood elf for dark vision and move speed and just kite / hide / climb around to avoid things

My instinct would be that they might end up 2 levels ahead at most, depending on the exact makeup of encounters.

Chainlock was another thought I'd initially considered, since an Imp can be a powerhouse at level 1 without putting you at much risk. But the material component cost combined with still being a rather squishy Warlock made it seem more risky. Lost Mines was my initial thought, where even if you have the Imp ready to go, you're still too close to the goblins in the initial ambush to entirely avoid getting shot with arrows.

It's the proper proficiencies which is an issue. Making any magic item requires Arcana proficiency and the tool in question. If you can customize backgrounds, it's not as bad of an issue, since you can just pick Arcana, Tinker's Tools (since Manifold tool should theoretically cover the rest for a 50 gp and 5 day upfront cost), alongside whichever feat you want.
The 2024 version of Alert just seems like a waste of time though, since all it gives you is a +2 to imitative because you don't have anyone to initiative swap with. Magic Initiate has some potential for the Warlock route, since you could grab Shield as a fallback while your Imp is doing all the work. Goliath could also be a way to patch that up in the short term, since you can probably nullify any low-level crits with Stone Endurance. And having 35 ft movespeed is useful if you need to retreat.

Yeah the sidekicks could perhaps be forgiven so as to survive the very dangerous early levels.
Thief is also neat because of the extra Attunement slot, which definitely comes in handy when you reach that level. Extra speed can help a LOT at early levels.
We have to account for boss fights further in the adventuring career, though. Maybe handpicked/crafted magic items and feats can help?

Yeah 2 levels ahead for tier 1 and early tier 2 seems reasonable.

I took a look at the XP per level table. For that lvl 10 example:

If the solo character has being having success and has been awarded proportionally up until the point were a normal party would be lvl 10, that would place him at lvl 17-19.
Which is kind of insane. But, considering the CR to level relationship, being above in level for multiple levels might reduce a bit how much XP he would most likely be getting in comparison to a properly levelled party for each encounter. That would tone it down a bit, but probably not that much, so there is indeed a tipping point of power as you mentioned.

As long as you put out lights, anyone without darkvision can't see you; anyone with darkvision, you are invisible to. Combined with pic related, you become a Skyrim stealth archer. It is the safest way to play a solo campaign. The next must-have item would probably be a ring of non-detection.

Yep goblins can be extremely dangerous for level 1 characters and Warlocks are rather squishy, specially in the start (can confirm, kek).

What I like about Alert is you can swap Initiative with your Familiar essentially giving you Advantage in it, as going first can be important when solo.
As a nice bonus: the 2024 Druid can now have a longer lasting Familiar (until end of next Long Rest) than back in 2014 (Wild Shape duration) at the cost of basically a Short Rest to restore the expended Wild Shape (so as not to spend a spell slot instead).

Shield can be incredible indeed.
Also for those who don't have them Magic Initiate can provide Healing Word and Guidance
Goliath can be very neat with the extra speed and Stone Endurance; and if not that their 'Misty Step' that doesn't count as spell can also be useful.

Well remembered. I suppose a build could make use of them if needed, as custom backgrounds are within the balance of the game AFAIK
But yes Crafter can fill that tool proficiency void if needed for sure.

There are also a few rather powerful Dragonmark 'Origin' feats too if Eberron.
One that is often overlooked and can be very useful for a few builds: Mark of Warding that provides Nystul's Magic Aura (for impersonating builds, like with Changeling, Mask of Many Faces or Master Of Myriad Forms) and Glyph of Warding for those who don't have them and need them.
Starting at Tier 2, having access to Glyph of Warding, a Portable Hole, enough time and (many) resources allows for some insane stacking of non-concentrating Concentration buffs that can be reserved for extremely difficult situations.

Doing the math does make me think I've underestimated just how much XP you'd get, though if the GM starts to cap or cut how much you get, that does complicate matters.
To use Lost Mines as an example again, in addition to hitting level 2 before the goblin cave, you hit level 3 when you clear it, and by the time you're done with the Redbrand hideout you're almost level 5.
Though again, you are doing the work of an entire party, so in some ways it's probably necessary. It's not really fundamentally different from how a party of 3 would level faster than a party of 5.

Even the outer 20 ft. of a torch is dim light, so a human holding a torch 25ft away from you won't spot you, but a goblin will because he treats that dim light as bright light, and your Ubral sight stops making you invisible.

Would only be nicer if there was a way to try and improve hits and crits statistically without multiple attacks or multiple spell rolls. That is not necessary, but helps a lot.

Interesting. I too had underestimated how much above level one could get at the mid levels, but indeed that might be necessary to survive the disadvantage in Action Economy. Getting swarmed can be very overwhelming even if not in melee.

Light isn't just about weight, it's about ease of use.

A dagger moves fast and as a bladed weapon, leaves an injury easily. Even a grazing strike will draw blood.

Speaking as a former 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo, unarmed strikes do not leave an injury easily. The number of people killed by a single punch, but untrained . To get results out of unarmed strikes you have to pick your shots well, land them where you wanted them despite enemy interference, and put your whole body weight behind it through stance shifting. Board breaking is used not just for flash but as a test of proper technique, at least under controlled circumstances. A minor bone in the human body breaks under the same circumstances as a board, major bone for 2 boards stacked, 3 bones stacked is the big thick ones like femur. But if you're not doing it right, you'll bounce off the board like a tennis ball with nothing to show for it but a painfully swollen hand or foot or forearm. Number one reason for failure, because by the time you're breaking you should have the technique down family solid, is lack of commit. In fact even printer paper won't break without the commit. And nothing you have to full body commit to to get anything done with should be light.

Unless, of course, magic is real and you've spent years cultivating your chi control and learning to sense it's flow in others, so now you're a mystic doing dim mak gentle fist monk shit. Then you obviously don't have to full body commit, just a finger jab infused with your mojo in a very specific nerve cluster is lethally debilitating. You could probably even sneak in TWO extra bonus action unarmed strikes doing it like that, if you also used your chi powers for a little low level superspeed.

It may seem plain, but Lucky (a very nice addition to any build actually) will help out a lot in those cases of bad rolls against powerful enemy spells. The good thing is that it is very versatile in working in many different types of cases.
If you really wish to focus on the Dex issue you mentioned, Resilient - Dexterity will add your Proficiency Bonus to Dex Saves and increase you Dex one bit, which is always neat, but Lucky may be more impactful overall for most cases.

Bard? Great Invisibility and Animate Objects are solid uses of concentration, and if you have greater invis you can buff whatever the Most Magical Melee Girl is to great effect. Bardic Inspiration is no joke either.

I'm a fan of Warcraft's lore for gnomes, ridiculous as it is (not really anything that came out in the last 10 years for modern)

Depends on the game. In one of my games, I had the idea for the character archetype first (Human noble who wanted to become a military historian like her great uncle before her) and then figured out what would make that work mechanically (Valor Bard).

My DMPC in my other campaign is the opposite. I took a look at what my party needed mechanically, ended up with an Orc Druid with the Guard origin, and then worked backwards from that and my knowledge of the setting to make up a backstory.

Yes and no. Everyone got it at mostly the same time. Gnome and dwarf ancestors began succumbing to the curse and dived deep into the earth and came upon Uldaman, an ancient, abandoned facility created by god-like cosmic beings called Titans who created the gnome ancestor.

In order to prevent the infection, the dwarf ancestor, Earthen, went into hibernation, and the gnomes decided to stay and run the machines that would allow the hibernation of Earthen until a cure was found, sacrificing themselves.

So gnomes succumbed to the curse first and left Uldaman, forgetting a lot of the information about the titans and starting their civilization almost 500 years before the dwarves did. They came out of hibernation later, which explains the tech discrepancy between the two.

they later retconned some other sect of dwarf ancestors who were spit off from the main group and found magic juice that actually DID cure the curse and never shared it, but I haven't played that expansion.

Take this with a grain of salt, it's been a hot minute since I read up on warcraft lore.

I always save the most noticeable or obvious feature of the room for last, as 90% of the time the players will be funneled towards interacting with that thing. I just pick one of the many cool ideas I have swirling around in my brain and try to make it work in character creation. Of course after considering what the other players want to play. I am also buddies with the DM and he always loves my ideas, because they always give him ideas for the world.

Like my thief character was raised in an orphanage, which would send the most talented kids to a secret school they have a deal with, where she would learn about assassination, thievery and infiltration. The school is funded by a wealthy Duke, who is secretly trying to overthrow the feudal order, but knows he has to use underhanded tactics to do it. He is using chaotic methods to ultimately do good. And my character fanatically shares that vision, because he is also her father figure, since she was one of the best spies the school ever produced.

Our artificer used to be enslaved in the forges of Bel. Sabotaged some stuff, got given a death-sentence punishment he unexpectedly survived, setting up the irony that he has to willingly go back to the hells to do the adventure. Excellent backstory and character stuff.
He met Bel who said his punishment was meted out, here, have this free legendary infusion for your service that can shatter anything even the chains shackling and dooming Elturel wink wink but don't do that because it would make things bad for Zariel wink wink. Artificer: Wow this Bel guy is actually pretty reasonable.
They've decided the time is right to deal with the chains but as he breaks the first one he experiences a lot of necrotic damage backlash as oops did I forget to mention it uses your lifeforce? Don't worry, your life will be preserved exactly long enough to burn itself out destroying the last one.
Half are destroyed and he's missing well over half his max HP. The dice will determine what happens but it's looking like we might be farewelling a PC next session.
He doesn't like Bel quite as much anymore.

Okay, that might be quite a lot for a level 5 party. They also do a lot of damage, so they'll probably knock the adventurers unconscious almost every time they get a chance to attack.

No, that'll be difficult.
But I mean, nobody can know how the dice will roll. My level 5 character once killed a CR 6 monster single-handedly, without any help. Of course, that's nothing compared to a CR 9, especially when reviving for two more rounds makes a huge difference.
