AoS book review: The Arkanaut's OathA fairly by the numbers privateer/pirate story but set in AoS. Fine if you want something that leans heavily into standard dwarf tropes and pirate stories but not amazing if you wanted something leaned into the steampunk aspect. Unlike some other AoS books, it is written entirely from the titular characters perspective so you get to see a lot of the KO/dwarf perspective and not follow some CoS or Stormcast schmuck. Unfortunately the characters are all pretty one note, including Drekki himself who doesn't really show any character growth or change throughout the story. The book does do a good job with the various combat scenes which is definitely something you want out of a warhammer book. Overall I'd probably give it a 6/10, worth a read if you want a book that explores KO as a faction and the differences between them and other dwarves as well as what Chamon is like. Can't recommend otherwise unless you REALLY like pirate stories.story spoilers:I did like the book exploring non-sigmar aligned human factions and the political reasons why they would stay independent. Drekki's ex showing up feels completely pointless, they name drop and talk about her constantly but when she finally shows up, she doesn't do anything, we don't learn anything we didn't already know about drekki and then she fucks off. I did really like the scene with the inflatable squig ship, wish they would have made that a model, or at least put out art of that thing. Mutalith Vortex Beast fight is cool too, GW please remake the model or at least put it back in the tzeentch battletome.

>>98065837yes and no.it uses round bases and free form movement like 40k, but the similarities end about there. ranged weapon ranges tend to be about 1/2 to 1/3 of 40k weapon ranges, maxing out at around 36" for the absolute longest range, with the average around 12-18" for 90% of the weapons in the game, and about 80% of the units in the game are meleedamage spills over, so unlike 40k where a giant 10 foot long lascannon beam politely stops at its first splattered cultist, excess damage from attacks in aos spills over onto the next model. there is also no strength or toughness. just health, saves, and FNP (called ward) so its less of a right tool for the right job game, and more of a is this unit an attacker or a defender or a fast unit or chaff? most units are combinations of two of those things. cover is a lot less important, tabling is a lot less important, objectives are everything. you can be down to 1 model and still win on points if you played objectives well.turn order is not fixed, its random, so you can get a double turn which makes the flow of the game much more unpredictable and cagey, can catch new players off guard if they overcommit. wizards are MUCH more impactful than psykers in 40k, even with 4e's toned down magicthe game has reactive commands which cost command points, but no strategems. so you dont have a million stats to keep track of, just a core set of like 10 basic command abilities. units are on average 2x as many pts as 40k for equivalent models, so armies are smaller and games are faster.

There’s a lot more differences in the gameplay of HH and 40k or AoS and TOW than there is between 40k and AoS. >>98065871>>98065837contcharacters dont join units, they just get some protection for being near them. similarly, most characters buffs, unless its a spell or command, dont target single units, but instead effect anybody who's within an aura, usually around 6-12" whole withing (means the entire units bases have to be completely within that range)you get a set of secondary objectives called battle tactics. they change every season, but this seasons version basically works like you pick a set plan of objectives during army building and attempt to complete them over the game for bonus points. there are more allies options in aos than 40k, but still less than older editions of aos or old world. basically a couple big units like gargants and the new cannon tower that can work as mercenaries for anybody, and then a bunch of regiments of renown which are like small preconstructed ally packages you staple onto your army, with a restricted list of who can take them. deep strike is less common in aos. still somewhat common, but wont be in every game. there arent really vehicles or transports aside from one or two armies, so that whole universe of troop transports and vehicles scooting around everywhere impossible to put down without dedicated anti armor just isnt a thing in aos. its a troops game of dudes and monsters marching on the field. kharadron are really the only army that uses 40k style transports regularly.

There's several textures/materials in close proximity across the model and often times the assembly design of the sprue does not help you with sub assembly, which creates tight spaces that make it easy to mess up in. Even aside from hand making new parts, 3d printing is a thing, and there's decent kitbash potential with stuff like terrain and vehicles. I can easily see someone using the tyranid terrain or a ravening gnarloak for some conversions.
