Ok, so I think this is close to what I want for sneaky pistol man. The basic concept is merging Divergent Lifestream with a pistol to fuck people over if he gets interrupted with being a sneaky smuggler. Surveyor is his "Legitimate Businessman" mode where he's in sealed human form, his Tengu/Oni unsealed form is for combat.

I'm not entirely pleased with taking Vast since from what I hear it's kind of cliche, and I don't *need* it with the techniques I chose, but I'm not sure what to do otherwise.

Ruination Gong and Force that Shatters the Heavens might also work? They make stuff less damage resistant and that could counter if it works.

Ok, trying this again. I think this might be a more interesting build than Elil "I Exist Only To Kill" Punchman, and thus maybe more fun for you guys to think about.

I downshifted some of the teleporting stuff for a more diverse array of utility techniques at the lower end that I think might be better suited for a smuggler (and hopefully also useful in combat since he's got G3 in both the linked attributes).

It's a more complex build than what I've attempted in the past, usually I'm more the smash face guy than the sneaky sneaky cheeki breeki guy, so I'd appreciate some eyes on him to make sure it all makes sense and holds together mechanically and narratively.

nta, but for me it's more like an unspoken social contract being broken. It's more about being polite and sensible than the setting or the CYOA. Everyone made their builds to fit a purpose, with some idea of how they fit into the setting. Characters don't just exist in a vacuum. The setting around them is also a big part of who they are. Most of them wanted to be cool bad-ass characters that stand out in the stage that is the city between. Progression means the setting will escalate, giving the builds new context that they might not be made for. I don't think most of us planned on progression, and throwing it in anyway undermines those characters.

You're essentially redefining other builds to be worse in order to make your own look good when you make a character for progression in an mp that wasn't expecting it. That makes that person look like an asshole, and I'd rather not leave traps for people to unknowingly get treated like assholes for something they probably thought was fair game.

Main TL;DR is that you either screw over the people who want progression or you screw over the people who didn't plan for it, and I think most of us are the latter and we need to be clearer about that so both sides don't piss each other off for no reason.

Progression is a natural part of any narrative and pretending the entire cast to be stuck in time is much worse. In this case it's a key part of the setting too, so not preparing for it should be considered a decision made un purpouse.

NTA, but I think those points are pretty lackluster for being against progression. However, I am also against progression, just for different narrative/mechanical reasons. Our characters are already in the top percentage of the setting by sheer virtue of Kofuko allowing us to adjust ourselves to our liking. Even ignoring the isekai portion as I know some people are uncomfortable in including it in their builds for acceptable reasons, Aura users with as much Aura capacity as ours are very few and far between. It'll take absolutely top tiers to match us.

Take the Fourth Magistrate as an example. She's touted as an almost invincible opponent which will be extremely tough to kill, and her favored techniques are Naked Warlord's Armor, Reconciliation of the Immortal Coil, Five Immortalities of Wukong, and Mountain-Smashing Lord. One of our builds could easily pick those and grab additional techniques. Now this isn't to say its her entire arsenal of techniques, nor that this combination isn't effective or strong, but judging a favored techniques as the main core of their "build", it still doesn't seem all that impressive for one of the more powerful people in the city in comparison to a PC due to the amount of points invested even if we don't know her Aura System or full Affinities.

All this rambling is to say it's strongly implied or outright said these techniques take years to learn, at the very least for anything beyond Basic. We simply will not reach any sort of timeframe to progress in a meaningful manner unless we're spanning the MP across decades. Even training Aura Capacity would take just as long. For the most part, I would consider our builds set in stone because we'd have to initiate months long timeskips between every story to reach a pace where we can show off improvements for new techniques. We couldn't even get to the rank up in Naruto with a timeskip, so I highly doubt that SC will live long enough to actually consider progression seriously.

Wow, we found the problem. When you reduce a whole setting to being something that it's not of course you start running into made up problems.
Even if the setting has cobat as key part of it why does it have to be between PCs? Why does it matter if your build is stronger? You can have stories where different leves of power interact, you can have different intreconnected stories in parallel. You can have no combat at all. If all you care about is combat and who the strongest is then you don't want an MP, you want an arena or a powerscaling thread from dbz.

I think it's fine to have progression if we're all on the same page and working towards it. If it was popular enough and we all started to update builds with progression in mind, I'd have no other issues with it. Don't know if we have that many people who care about it however.

Timescale is also an issue. Just having to come to some kind of consensus on how fast the progression would be is a nightmare. Is it fast? Is it slow? We'd run into issues trying to decide and implement it (and if we're being honest, that's the actual reason why we assume no progression in mps. Less headache.) Realistically our narrative progression would be what it's always been; character growth, shifts in relationships, etc.

I mean just for Affinities it says Legend Status in Alchemy hasn't been achieved in 60 years, but you could say its due to genetic luck/natural talent as that's all the Meridian Affinities shake out to be. Techniques that describe stealing your strength/aura capabilities such as Consummate Self-Incarnation of Divergent Lifestream describe needing months or even years to recover if you get too sapped by them, but you could also claim its due to being crippled and not merely sent back to the start. Prodigy you might describe as merely scale and not an actual representation of the time it takes for other people to master Release techniques specifically. However, I think looking a the existing characters and the Lore Doc describing the quantity/quality of normal inhabitants paints a pretty large picture on it being extremely difficult to learn these things.

If not for time, then purely from a resource standpoint, as they are gatekept by Clans. If you do manage to discover their secret techniques, then maybe it would be far easier to learn it as unlike most other people you possess the actual affinities to grasp it. I still think that there's no real reasonable timeframe for the MP to be able to learn these as you'd have to be constantly bouncing around to scrounge up reasons on why you'll be able to learn these techniques or find someone to teach you.

It was discussed in the first run and I raised up similar points. How many AP should you actually get, and how much time should pass. 1 a month in setting, letting Prodigy get 2? Should it be a basic technique worth as you couldn't buy anything with just those, and can you bank it by saying you were working on learning said technique until you earned enough to buy it? Should it even be possible to learn Legendary techniques through this way? So and so forth, its like you said, far too much of a headache to deal with this sort of progression when you have to factor these kind of things.

Progression is part of the narrative, if the narrative includes being better at combat then it's fine but it doesn't have to be. A character doesn't become useless if it's weaker or if it it would fall behind over time.

The point is that characters should be relevant to the kind of story they are supposed to be telling. If being strong is part of your narrative you should have a build that reflects that, if potential to be strong later is a part of the build the mechanics should reflect that. Bob the street vendor doesn't need to keep up with the guys that fight for a living.

it really does seem like too much of a hassle to implement actual progression mechanics. Its not like prodigy is going to be the only factor effecting your learning rate, then you have aura affinities, clan affiliations, someone just having a lot of money to pay for a tutor. No one is going to manage or agree on this stuff, this is why the author doesn't give concrete numbers because there are way too many factors to consider to give them.

The lore doc, and the author, said that people just don't have the right affinity for this shit. It's rare to have even 1 G2 affinity. It's not difficult to learn them, you just straight up can't. The average people just suck and that's why nobody has good techs.

It is worth stating that companions aren't fully banned and do get included in backstories and whatnot sometimes. Not sure about companions specifically, but canon factions and characters from the mission section have already been woven into build backstories in meaningful and character-defining ways for this SC run. It is more that it's not practical or as interesting for MP to focus on companions much when you could use a PC instead. Companions are typically redundant. And sometimes the structure of a cyoa lead us to restrict or eliminate companions for mechanical balance.

In SC specifically companions are not used at all. They are used as rivals to fill in the gaps until a PC is found. But factions are a different story, they are a much more importat part of the setting that can't really be ignored.
