I still think that building, kitbashing, and painting minis and scale models is the best hobby in the world.
I don't understand how you paint different materials. for example say I have 3 bases. I want to paint one so it looks like gray metal, one so it looks like gray plastic, and one so it looks like gray cloth. what am I supposed to do differently to each one to create the appearance of each material?
>>98104760it sure feels like the holy trinityticks all my boxes atleast and have done so for nearly 30 years alreadystill part of my daily life and i have never regretted it
>>98104777Add texture to the mix.
>>98104795how?
>>98104777>i am too lazy to look up references for different materials, please spoonfeed meNo
>>98104777Like the other Anon says, giving them different textures works. Like in your example, painting the cloth by stippling or cross-hatching to give it a faint woven texture, while having the other elements smooth. Plastic Vs metal would then be a difference in contrast; grey metal having brighter, sharper highlights than grey plastic, for exampleYou can also use different temperatures, e.g. warm greys tend to read as being 'softer' than cold greys, so using warmer highlights can make something look more like cloth
How would you guys Heresify attack bikes? Head and torso are obvious enough, but im wondering if im missing anything obvious
House 2 got some basic paint. Those big buildings are a great way to finish up some older pots of paint
>>98104798Texture pastes for natural stuff. Sanding, drilling, Tamiya Putty method for steel, iron and general metal. There's a Nightshift video in OP, he has multiple tutorials about that. Otherwise, you simulate materials by weathering.
>>98104803I know what metal and cloth look like. I'm asking what you are supposed to do with your paint to make it look like that.>>98104812how would you highlight something like a completely flat base?
>>98104822ok for another example say you have a character wearing a coat. what would you do differently to make it look like it's made of wool vs making it look like a rain slicker? surely you wouldn't be putting texture paste on it.
>>98103316dakkadakka is just as unusable because it's filled with grogs who will whip themselves into a frenzy if you dare enjoy anything modern warhammer or modern (insert thing) like fuck off man, leave me alone, i want to enjoy my minis i dont CARE about primaris or whatever other stupid bullshit you're hung up on
>>98104834stippling
>>98104846Use your fucking eyes man, you already got told how different materials behave and to use references
>>98104734Finishing up my meme machine then converting some scout snipers into eliminators
>>98104834>how would you highlight something like a completely flat base?Decide where the light is hitting it, put highlights on that bit. Just take a base and hold it under a lamp, move it about a bit, pay attention to how the light's falling on it
>>98104543The point is canceling out the orange like anon asked, the left one had fire dragon bright as the last layer so it was pretty orangey. Here's some older cloaks with a slightly warmer hue>>98104694Thanks, it's gsw matteI also put down a somewhat thick gloss coat before the glaze to smoothen the texture a bit (I sponged those reds roughly)
Test mini for ultras and first time using an airbrushOriginally quite happy with the bright blue but feel like it clashes with the metallics a bitIs there anything I can do to tie it togetherSoz for fingers I don't own a lightbox
>>98104846Here's an example of different types of cloth together on one mini. The curtain is a "rougher" cloth, done with lots of cross hatching and tiny lines to show more texture. The sash is a "softer" cloth like silk, that looks like its mostly done with glazing and stippling to give texture but not as defined texture. The pants and shirt are in between. With different brush strokes the illusion of textured cloth looks differently.
>>98103966>>98103974I don't have a photo of it but right underneath the guard of the blade is where it snapped. The handle of the sword is just really thin so I'm not sure what I would use for the pin itself even if I have a small enough drill bit
>>98104864ok so if I use the blanket on my bed as a reference it looks flat when you look at it straight on, but if you look at it from an angle it is reflective. how do I paint that on a flat surface?
>>98104954Damn. What miniature is that?
>>98105059Probably something from necromunda if I had to guess.
>>98104777A material is a combination of color, glossiness, and texture. If those are all the same, you can't visually tell the difference between metal, plastic, and cloth, even in real life.
>>98105064
>>98105059High level golden demon entries are often heavily kitbashed/converted, sometimes even scratch built. The model may not even exist.
>>98104816Get recasts of Outrider bike kit, but it's a bit too late in your case.
>>98104987If a paperclip is too thick then you can get smaller brass rods at hobby stores. Worst case you can cut it flush at the hand and drill into the hand to connect the hilt a little closer. Other option would be to hide the connection point with small chain or floral wire and paint it as a decoration, black templar style.

Okay, so to get back to question from previous thread - assuming I would ditch the airbrush now, most logical way would be both glazing some dark red into shadows and magenta into highlights + some drybrushing? In this particular case I used AK Brick Red over gray primer as a base and tried to highlight with Scarlet Red.
>>98105510Why not shade it with an airbrush?
>>98105336Yea? Why are you quoting it like that's not true. Retard.
Bought some milliput on a whim. Anyone got some good tutorials (pdf/image or video) on getting started with sculpting?
>>98104916I like the contrast between the blue and silver, personally.Welcome to the airbrush club. Those flat coats are addictive, aren't they? What's your PSI at? I'd turn it down a bit, when the paint hits the mini it's supposed to still flow a little bit so it's not grainy.Using a fridge as a lightbox isn't just a meme, although it's not forbidden to use your fingers or show your workspace.
>>98105519I hate masking and I start to think that it's not for me - every time I pick it up, setup everything, etc I have shaking hands from constant worry about everything. Can't really relax when my mind is filled with "please don't clog, please don't dry inside" and so on.

>>98106501you can always add a tiny mushroom or two, or some more small rocks with more different shades and textures from the ground
Almost done with the box set. I like painting cloth.
I've got some clear aquarium gravel I planned to use for basing, but due to how it was manufactured, there are two flat and unnatural looking faces to it.it's as if it was poured and hardened, then broken up into small pieces, but you can tell the top and bottom where it is perfectly flat and smooth.I think it's glass, but I have no idea what type.I tried smashing with a hammer to make smaller, more random pieces but very mixed results.any suggestions or tips?
>>98106755Mind posting a pic? Sounds like it could be decent for a broken mosaic/temple floor type deal. Super glue it down somewhat uniformly with spots of irregular/broken "tiles" here and there, and weather the more broken spots accordingly when painted. Can fill in the gaps in between with thinned texture paste for "grout", or can use regular texture paste to make mud for a dirtier look.
>>98106501Mushrooms and moss tufts. I night also considered doing your base edge in a color other than black. It blends in with the cave colors.
>>98105195Great work anon.

I feel like I'm getting baited in the other thread but it seems like anons just ask their clanker gf about "what could cause a paint to xyz" and end up talking about some hallucinated edge case that will never happen with miniature paints.
Has anyone ever used coffee grounds and tea leaves as basing material? Heard about this recently, but I'm curious if that wouldn't just lead to your bases rotting.
>>98107210Oh yeah a lot thicker than I thought. You can totes use that for quartz. Get some green stuff and make a little mound and let it set for 20 or so minutes, then push a piece of the glass down into it to set its place. Pull it out, little dab of superglue, then crystal back down and leave it to set. Once the greenstuff is set superglue it to your base then texture paste it up to blend in. You'll get a rough rock with the quartz growing out of it and it should be pretty well anchored.
>>98107330Yea leaves are already dry so I imagine after spray varnishing to seal them they should be alright. Coffee grounds I wouldn't fuck with, just sounds like a mold issue waiting to happen.
>>98107330You can bake the coffee grounds dry, but I don't see anything they offer over sand.
>>98105775never SAID i wanted to bother them, i just pointed out that it's unusable for it's own host of problems, clearly i have no interest in using it due to this. Hell, if they werent prone to freaking out on their own its not like i (personally) cant co-exist with em

>>98110798>You know the name of the book?Master of Sanctity. There's also one of the Ciaphas Cain books where he's with the reclaimers chapter (who's colors are based on the Wombles), and everyone is really nervous about the creaking stairs that they're going down. In the deathwatch omnibus we meet Omni, a short imperial fist who is really sensitive about being a manlet so he lifts and gets so swole his armor can't be expanded anymore, his captain forbiding him from getting any wider. He encounters a door he has trouble getting through so he ends up ripping it off its hinges to squeeze through the hole. In the Ragnar Blackmane books we meet Haegar, a massive space wolf who is the only fat space marine we meet, he's constantly eating but its mostly muscle. Dude uses a thunderhammer one handed, loves to throw his thunderhammer at dudes (took a dreadnought's knee) then complains that he has to now go and get it back.

Do most spray primers besides whites and near whites cover well? I know Colour Forge black covers great but I'm curious about the other colors. Peachy peach looks like a good soft brown that lighter colors would go over easily. Anyone try it out?
>>98111840I've never met a primer that didn't cover 100%.
>>98111859In my experience with AP white and Colour Forge ghoul grey it would take at least two solid coats for full coverage. I'm building my own spray booth out of a plastic storage tub. How should I mount filters in the back of it? I know that there should be an empty void behind it to help suction, but should the filter be angled in a specific way to help avoid paint hitting it directly?
>>98111811Can always start by laying down an acrylic basecoat and just doing a wash and highlights on top of it, thats how I started out. Takes a few days to dry since you only have one or two layers of oil instead of starting from a preglaze. Especially if you leave the oils on some parchment paper on top of a piece of cardboard to leech out some of the excess linseed oil. Also having a good work flow helps. Like after I do the touchups and shadows on the kommando's I'll start working on my word bearers, probably going to do one last test model to hash out the metallic oil mixes before I start on the kill team. Once I've done some of the word bearers the kommandos will be dry enough to varnish, and I'll start putting some time into the vet guard that I currently have soaking in LA's totally awesome. Once the first batch of word bearers are dry I'll break out the airbrush to matte varnish them and prime the vet guard at the same time. Just always leaving myself something to work on while something else is drying. Being able to freeze my oil palette and save mixes for a few sessions makes it pretty seamless to get back into it, just need to let the paint warm up about 20 minutes while I get the rest of my tools and mineral spirits set up. After getting used to how easy it is to get smooth blends with the oils its hard to go back to glazing acrylics.

>>98112346the diy spray booths I've seen are basically a double box. the front box is the working area and the rear box is where the fan connects. the middle wall is a frame for a filter. if you are worried about paint clogging up your expensive hepa filter you can put a layer of cheap cotton wadding in front of it.

Putting my all into my first character model in a bit. I need some guidance on the skin since I'm not well versed on living flesh. I want to go for the look of a white guy in a cold place. Got a death korps kit for my birthday and never built it but I was bored so I put these dudes together today. Never built 40k minis before but they're pretty cool. I wanted to paint them in an iron warriors paint scheme cause of the hazard stripes but I might do something else, mainly just thinking of what color the coats should be. I was thinking yellow cause the steel legion but red might also look nice. I might do both just to see how it turns out.
>>98112996>>98113063Well I was wondering if it would be better if I tilted the filter, the airbrush wouldn't be pointing directly at it, this it would last longer. I was going to use a regular air duct filter, but I'll look at getting hepa.
>>98112541The propellant etches the surface and creates a roughness that paint can adhere to. Too much of the paint flooding the mini creates a self-levelling effect which causes a smooth outer layer, hiding the etched bits

>>98111580Without a fair bit of work, you're going to deal with the fact that almost every modern Eldar unit has at least one model on a wraithbone ruin tactical rock.
>>98112541because it not a chemical bond its a physical one, primer should be rough at the microscopical level for paint to adhere better, inf you flood the thing it levels and creates a too smooth surface on wich paint just slidessame happens with matt varnish, it's matt because it's rough, if you use too much the binder fills the microroughness the matting agent creates and diminishes the effect
>>98113883Looks gangsta as fuck anon well done
>>98113780it doesn't really matter where the airbrush is pointing. you want enough airflow that anything you spray into the booth will get sucked through the filter regardless of what angle it came from. a properly functioning spray booth will hold a loose piece of cardboard against the filter just from suction power.
How the FUCK do I keep my wet palette from molding?Once I finish painting I clean the membrane, remove excess water, and store it without it being fully closed I washed the sponge several times with soap and bleach but it keeps coming back im losing my fucking mindAs you can see the sponge was on the dry side as the paper was wrinkling already.
>>98114560>store it without it being fully closedWho told you to do this? It should stay closed when stored unless it is bone dry.
>>98114566I assumed it being fully closed would make mold proliferate more.
>>98114581It only proliferates if it's already in there. If you want to store it for a long time, squeeze as much water/moisture out as possible, dry the sponge, and obviously toss the paper. Also you should use vinegar instead of bleach to clean it (don't use both at the same time, please). IIRC bleach can't kill the roots of the mould, which is probably why you're getting flareups. You can use a 50/50 mix of boiling water and vinegar.
>>98114560put some copper or silver shavings in a corner of the sponge
>>98114560it doesn't matter if you close it fully or not, it will get moldy from the water or paint if it wants to, keep it fully open, under sunlight if possible, use distilled water and add a bit of bleach every now and then
>>98114560long term storage, clean everything, ditch the used paper and keep the sponge separately (I usually keep it on dryer). For short term storage (days), just close everything tightly (paints, paper, everything) and put it into a fridge.
>>98114603>>98114560Seconding the fridge, it will greatly slow down any mould that happens to be in there.
>>98114602>add a bit of bleachvinegar works better for mould, and bleach is more likely to damage the sponge
>>98114608not in this case, for a sponge it works better than vinegar, because you are soaking it and there's no place it won't touchyes it will damage it overtime, but a couple drops every other week on a sponge that is not moved, bent or rubbed will take a long to damage it noticeably, and wet pallet sponges are consumables anyways just change it once a year or something

>>98114971This is fine for a beginner, I've seen far worse than this. Don't be afraid to go back and forth over each area, you don't have to get each area exactly right the first time.I'd also use more washes to help define different details and panel lines. Two different materials next to one another always look weird if there's nothing defining the gap between them (washes solve this issue). For brush control, try bracing your wrists against something. This could be your the edge of the table, your chest, your stomach, or even each other. Finally, consider taking a look at all the videos in the OP, they're very helpful and have a lot of good tips:>>98104734
>>98115002can i wash them with khorne red or kantor blue
>>98115027Both of those are opaque paints, not washes. But you can make a wash out of opaque paints by diluting them. Keep in mind that washes are typically DARKER than the layer they are going over, to create the illusion of shadows. If you have some black paint, you can make a decent universal wash out of that. You can also just buy one of GWs prebottled wash paints (I think they're labelled "shade"?). Citadel's washes are actually pretty good. If you do go that route, pick up a bottle of nuln oil (liquid skill), or a bottle of drakenhoff nightshade and a bottle of reikland flesh.
>>98113217I primed, left outside and had a nap, accidentally slept too long and went outside and it had been raining. They seem fine, must have dried enough before the rain started.
>>98115027For wash you're better off using products formulated for that technique either washes or dilu ted contrast paints), as regular paints are more opaque and create a more unsightly finishIts alright anon, the first minis are always ugly as a sin, you have to let the bad ones out of your system before the good ones start coming in.And don't ever repaint your first mini, treasure it and you'll see how far you've come in a few months

>>98115067there's no official warhammer stores here but i bought this starter set and some warriors of chaos at a local TCG shopi'll go there and ask for some dark and black paints cause i need that for my chaos warriors anywaysi dont look forward to assembling and painting the 20 skaven in this set, not gonna lie
>>98114775>>98114788Why would you even react this way?I used a wet palette for a few months, then decided it just wasn't worth it. I always use very minimal amount of paints at once, and always thin them in different ways and with different mediums depending on what I need.A wet palette just disrupts the balance and precision I need with the only upside of keeping paints moist for longer which I don't need.
>>98114971Painting within the lines would fix half the issues on that model, and a simple wash would fix the other half. Your paints don't even seem that thick which is usually one of the first issues. Cheer up anon, you'll be fine.
>>98115092>i'll go there and ask for some dark and black paintsBlack, white, grey, and brown are all essentials. Grab a shade/wash paint or two and you'll be totally set.>20 skaven in this setSkaven can be pretty fiddly to build and paint from what I've heard (though not necessarily un-fun), I'd save them for last desu.
>>98115107i dont know how to paint within the lines
>>98114971Looks pretty good as a starting point. It helps if you put the mini down and come back to it, maybe an hour later or maybe the next day, and look at it from all sorts of angles to see what spots you missed. With some touch ups, that shield will look nice. For washes, look for something that specifically says it's a wash on the bottle. Unlike normal paints, these are way thinner and usually take a bit longer to dry (meaning you can keep manipulating them with your brush).
>>98115113It's just practice and practice.

>>98114880>if you want to reuse the paperI use isopropyl to clean the sponge, I have no idea why you would want to save the paper as I have 500 sheets of the paper that came with my sponge. I use isopropyl because it evaporates and doesn’t leave any residue in the sponge.
>>98115191Use less of it. Also are you using normal hobby acrylics or some paint with some obscure medium that might react to it?
>>98115254Microset softens the decal, which makes it a lot easier to apply on uneven surfaces. Microsol dissolves the decal film, which helps with the painted on look, and further helps with adhesion and shaping. They are both pretty good, though my prefered choice is VMS Decal Set and Soften. It's basically the same thing, but touch more powerful and in one bottle instead of two.
>>98114971Looks good anon, in a couple years you’ll marvel at how far you’ve come but I think you did a very good job
>>98115110Skaven aren’t ork tier easy because of their size but they don’t require a ton of precision either
>>98115289so basically it melts decals into shape right awaythat sounds pretty handy i use spray varnish for that same reason
>>98115368It's good to apply varnish before and afterward, but no, varnish doesn't work the same way. Unless there are varnishes that specifically help with adhesion, shaping, and dissolve the film.
>>98114971Huh. We're on page 9. Time to make a new collage for our next thread. In the meantime, though, I'm going to guess what you've got going on here. You're painting with a Citadel Starter Brush™, aren't you?I understand the cost-saving measure, but dammit GW, why do you insist on handing out this garbage to people you want to get *into* the hobby? After about 30 minutes of honest-to-goodness painting, a starter brush is not going to be good for much other than stirring paint or slathering washes on things. They're absolute junk, and probably discourage more people than they help. When you're just starting out, anon, getting some inexpensive synthetic watercolour or acrylic brushes from a store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby will be good enough for now, and miles ahead of Citadel Starter Brushes. Don't worry about ruining them. You will. That's why it's OK to spend a few bucks on each one and toss it out when it's wrecked beyond even using for drybrushing.
>>98115388>you have to paint for 40 years before youre good at itdamn
>>98115382> varnish doesn't work the same waywhat i mean is i give my decals a really light spray from a can so all the curves melt away to make them even
>>98115322They take a bit more effort to fully paint, what with all the little overlapping details, straps, etc. I'd rank them a little harder than chaos warriors and a good bit harder than stormcast.
>>98115396It takes 40 years if you start as a child and take a 35+ year break. It takes less than a year if you're an adult with half a brain and some free time.
>>98114971We all gotta start somewhere.
>>98115388>Starts getting into this miniature painting, Gunpla, and girlpla nonsense at 40It’s fucking over for me, isn’t it?
>>98115388>>98115443>>98115455i heard it takes 10 000 hours to actually get good at something
>>98115455There are people in their 50s and 60s who are in this hobby too, and they wish they could've started in their 40s.
>>98115455I started playing with painting at around 31, accepted that I won't become some master anyway and simply try to enjoy the process. You should too.
>>98115478That old legend states that it takes 10 000 hours to become a master.I don't believe it to be true, personally. Baseless repetition is like repeatedly running a knife along a honing rod, and expecting it to become sharp.
>>98115499>10,000 hours is approximately 1.14 years>I don't believe it to be true, personallythat does seem very little time when you think it in years like that
>>98115499i think it's it's implied that it's 10k hours of deliberate practice, not absent-minded repetition
>>98115536but since you have to be alive and shit like that let's pretend you practive 8h a day, it suddenly it's 3 yeas and a half
>>98115565If the thing you're practicing is not your full time job and you can only practice 4h a day it turns into 7 years which is suddenly a fuckload of time
>>98115052You were only supposed to drink six drops, anon.

>>98115113Brush control comes from just painting. Michelangelo didn't paint a Mozart in a day, it took a long time to learn.
