Hopefully burning out quicker than a teenager shouting numbers for attention, its the Shuggy Duggy edition of the Board Games General!

TQ:
Speaking of burnout, what game ended an era for you?
Maybe it killed a genre you previously enjoyed.
Had you walk out of the hobby for a year or two.
Murdered a once functioning game group.

>Speaking of burnout, what game ended an era for you?
when 7 wonders got old. it was the first of many and I'd even played it back to back 3 times in one game night. the next to fall was Roll for the Galaxy which I still bring out but no longer fully enjoy. Castles of Burgundy, Arctic Scavengers, my shelves are full of games that no longer pop for me.

>Murdered a once functioning game group.
As my meetup group died from leadership burnout and local Library politics I became a safe haven for a select group of gamers hand picked from the masses. We had weekly board games and weekly D&D at my house. I also played in two other outside D&D games. Covid came and everyone in that core board game group moved online and all the tertiary D&D players dropped until we had to combine groups to continue the campaigns. I played, in person, with the same 3 guys all through Covid but the board game and D&D scene has never been the same. My old group still plays bga online every Tuesday without me, nobody plays D&D and my board game group is two guys every other Sunday. I have neither the time nor the energy to try to find such wonderful people again that I would invite into my house and game with multiple times a week.

There's only one game I've ever burned out on, and that's Quartermaster General WW2. No other games come remotely close in the number of plays we had, so I wouldn't say I've felt a general kind of burnout at all for over 10 years. Feels good to own more than 5 games I s'pose.

Each expansion adds more factions and that is just more stuff to learn, and the game is only tolerable when every player knows how every faction in play wins and how to stop that.
Second expansion i think adds Advanced Setup and the alternate central deck, both excellent upgrades that give players more choices but they don't really fix the game.
Hirelings are whatever. New maps can be fun but also imbalanced or add wacky rules that someone will forget and that accidentally hands the win to a third party.

Whats your preferred way of making maps for twilight imperium? We've played through all the pre-made ones and I'm not sure I like milty drafting, as it doesn't take into the overall map, just each slice
>>
>>98109995
so far RAW has been alright, but i only play like once a year. If I played more I might think about slice/Milty draft, specifically with premade slices from like the tournaments or something as I don't trust the random slice algorithm to generate fun ones, even if they're guaranteed to be "balanced".

W40k 5th edition - suddenly things became less crunchy and the lore started being brighter for me, the factions grew weird and the rules smooth. A fall from grace I tell ye.

nWoD: Things were looking good with just Mortals out (Se7en and stylish horror seemed to be the main genre) and then it started to crumble quickly. Werewolves were ok, Vamps were more disconnected but ok, Prometheans were great... but everything else was somehow too tight, restrictive and had way too much "specific style"

DnD 4e: you no longer had the freedom to build and play whatever you wanted with the d20 System in its thousands of forms, it was suddenly combat focused and gridded and the theming was somehow boiled deep into it. The hobby never recovered.

Twilight Imperium 4: The greatness of having a toolbox you can spend years developing to fit the tastes of a single group of maniacs was destroyed by a hipster-friendly, girlfriend-friendly, smooth "experience". Nothing since then had the combo of pure insane awesome fun and raw insane mechanics. I almost cried playing TI4, a man growing old and watching another pillar of greatness die.
>>
>>98110396
He's growing this kind of thin that looks worryingly similar to cancer patients imo

Jon from johngetsgames grew a bit thicker in contrast, but the only thing that look makes me worry is that he's soon gonna become a 18xx only channel
>>
>>98110955
I was worried that the cardboard would absorb the epoxy and warp. Maybe if I spray a lot of sealant on them first.
>>
>>98110994
the existance of TI4 does not stop you from playing TI3, you know? also, what do you see in 3 that doesn't exist in 4 and that you can't port with a bit of homebrew?
>>
>>98111028
I cry for the people who play TI4 and think it is a great game.

There are many subtle things that make a big difference, I even homebrewed things from TI2 and TI4 into my TI3 so I am not saying there are no good ideas (TI4 has one great idea with the racial characters bringing in special abilities, although it needs a lot of balancing).

For starters - the limited access to when and how many Space Docks you can build. The inability to transport PDS. The missing Transfers (try playing against a guy who plans ahead and manages to do like 3 or 4 Transfers during his game VS a guy who knows nothing and uses 1 Transfer when it randomly looks like a good idea...)

I played TI4 three times and never want to play it again unless it is the only option that day. It is not a bad game.

But compared to TI3... whoah no comparison, I even play the purest version possible (no homebrew) once every few years and it is still amazing. So this is not about homebrew and the TONS of stuff we added in my group. As I said, the subtle things missing or adjusted is what makes it strange to play TI4. Several layers of awesome strangeness missing just to make it shorter and simpler.

transfer actions are a waste of action economy though, right? or am i misremembering or misunderstanding the rules? its just reshuffling and locking down your fleets. why would you waste your turns doing 3 or 4 of them when with "proper planning" you should do 0? i now kinda wanna play against you just to understand what your group is cooking in the war room.

also why would you transport PDS, they're Planetary defence systems, not Space defence systems. keep them on the planet, dummy. but even then, there's now two factions that do transport PDS, if you're a freak whos into that.
>>
>>98111257
Transfers are how I keep my core territory churning. Send fleet of heavy ships out to free fleet supply slots in the system, build in the system (and sometimes bring transports to load fresh units). One action, one marker (the second comes from supply so only a problem for late game of long games). It's not something I use on the borders where the situation is usually hot (needs more movement and systems should be kept unactivated so that I can react quickly).
>>
>>98111257
PDS transfer capability is great. I can now build a carrier fleet and load it with GF and PDS and MECs and just drop it on a valuable planet. Usually it's a good idea to fight with mostly ships on one side of your territory (so that fleet supply is full and your big fleets engaged in battles that make sense) and have a cold war on the other side (where you and your opponent just move PDS and other non-ship assets around). That way, I have a hot and cold war and the hot war has most of my ships in places where space battles actually do happen (instead of just being scary parked on the cold border for most of the game).

give me a light to medium-light game with stock market as the main mechanic. I tried stockpiled on tts and it felt like it's missing something that would bring it from an alright game to a good game.
Sure there's some bluffing that could be used, but for the most part you just sell whatever lead player sell. There's never really need to sell your stock outside of that.
Only played the base game because I want to see if it's something I want to purchase and bring to game night. The expansion are pretty much impossible to get reasonably.

Galactic Cruise is pretty fun, I learned it from first principles on BGA playing without reading the rules. It is definitely more complicated than any of those other games you mentioned.
>>
>>98112985
>about $7.50 on sale to play 60% of every single board/card/ttrpg game ever made
ftfy, and 60 percent of ~175000 is still a shitload of board games you can play. It all depends if the game isn't "only 20 people have heard of this game" or something similar, though there's still a decent chunk of super niche titles
>>
>>98114672
>Want to try out galactic cruise on bga
>Literally fall asleep during the tutorial
>Multiple times
To be fair it is not the only game this happened, but still. I felt it is very representative of a lot of things I don't particularly enjoy in modern euros. Every mechanic that got me a bit excited was immediately followed by some smoothing it out or making it less confrontative. Now, I am very resistent to slop and do like some puzzly no interactive games now and then, but this seemed like such a boring design. Now it might play great for all I know, but I still wonder how it is so popular

>>
>>98114721
>Now it might play great for all I know,
I have friends who like it and I've played it more times than I would like to. You just repeat your todo list over and over again. There are very few actual decisions to be made. Which company goals to race for is a decision. Which cockpits to take is a decision. And occasionally a choice between alternative ways to get a thing you need is a decision. If reputation is a guest bonus the choice between alternatives comes a bit more frequently. Every other choice is a non-decision and there's a long downtime between your turns.
If you want a heads down efficiency puzzle just play Project L or something. You could do 6 games of it in the time it would take to play Galactic Cruise, and that's a conservative estimate.

>>
>>98115704
>>98114502
Third'ed. I think it's a shame only the very heavy 18xx let you do interesting stock shenanigans, like selling trains for 1 dollar to your other company, then dumping the now defunct company on someone else. There's a lot of finance world shenanigans just waiting to be gamified. I think people are afraid of doing so because business is extraordinarily dry, fake and gay in the real world - but it surely could make for a fun boardgame.
>>
>>98114502
technically Black Friday is a stock market game and it's fun, but you don't control the companies directly, don't get dividends, and the only stock-like thing the stocks do is change in value very rapidly up and down, while gold (the only other tradeable asset) only goes up.

Hey guys

Looking for a mostly solo board game with optional multiplayer. It's going to be my birthday in a couple of days and I'm looking for one with lots of replay value. Currently, I saw the Bullet board game which replicates shmup as a puzzle board game.. I like Star Wars so that Outer Rim looks appealing.. And I saw Cyberpunk 2077 Gangs of Night City as well.
