This.
Whatever the players make up at the table is more important and cooler than official corporate fluff.

The BM box is quite good as a one off to get characters and hounds. The Battalion is probably better as a core force though.

I am going to be facing Warriors of Chaos Friday. It's a fairly light army overall, as is mine, but I am wondering how do I deal with two chaos chariots? How dangerous are they?

I got 5 wold riders with a big boss with wollopas and no impetious boss hat and feigned flight. I assume baiting a charge and counter charge may help?

Also got 3 trolls with great weapons and 6 cavalry spear, frenzy boar boyz.
>>
>>98421886
They're not dangerous. At all. Just shoot at them and they'll die. Cast magic at them? They'll die. Let them charge your guys? They (the chariots, not your guys) will die.
Chaos chariots suck.
>>
>>98421898
Huh, ok. Thought T5 and first charge with D6+1 AP impact hits would hurt. He also has two lvl 1 sorcerers with spell familiar and mark of tzeentcg. I got no magic but hopefully my numbers will help.

>>
>>98421886

I mean, idk about that. The impact hits could take care of the wolf riders by themselves. Chaos Chariots aren't super competitive, because they aren't super mobile, but they still hit relatively hard when they connect.
>>
>>98421948
I think a goblin army that goes heavy on magic and artillery could do decently. Spear Chukkas are really good for their cost, Rock Lobbas are decent. It's a shame you're no night gobbo at all because the Doom Diver is probably your best artillery piece.

how big are these things canonically? In Total War they're fucking huge but on the table they're much smaller. Only about 5x the size of a standard gor. Are they particularly rare? I know beastmen like to lurk and hide in the forest but I imagine cygors and ghorgons tower above trees and leave huge hoofprints
>>
>>98422510
Im sure they are somewhere between model scale and OW, probably don't tower over trees in the Drakenweld. I'm pretty sure they show up to a heard the same way minotaurs do, drawn in by the smell of blood from sacrifices at headstones before they set out to pillage.

Its mentioned in a few places that Cygors specifically carry the herdstones between locations so that should give an indication of their size. Ghorgons are Giant sized as someone else noted and I think its in the green skin book or ogre book that they list how big they are.

After many interruptions and a quick session with my uncle's (and now my) dremel drill, I've finally magnetized the bases of my new (well, 1998 isn't new, but still) chaos knights. The instant the glue is solid enough for the magnets not to get torn off by the metal bar I use as a priming stick, they're getting primed and I'll get cracking on painting them as soon as possible. I have to get these five knights, or at the very least just the champion, painted before the 31st. If I don't, they'll have to wait until Christmas and I simply cannot tolerate that.

Pig barter has this mystic to it. Its a town in the middle of the most inhospitable nightmare realm outside the chaos wastes, that from the description has a very "Labyrinth" feel to it. Most of the town sits on stilts over a swamp full of gnoblars they actually co-exist with albeit with a lot of crime. Pigs are the main economy with jousting on the animals being a popular sport.
It has a lot of whimsy to it while still being gritty and I always wonder how it came to be. Really fun place imo

Are the winds of magic retconned?
I remember reading that humans could only dedicate themselves to a single wind of magic but in old world people just cast whatever?
>>
>>98425129
Not retconned, but we've not arrived at that point in the timeline yet. ToW takes place somewhere around the Age of Three Emperors (I think?), over a hundred years prior to Teclis establishing the Altdorf colleges of magic. At this point in the timeline, human imperial sorcery is still essentially unregulated and/or illegal from what I understand, and is more the domain of relative outlaws who might find the patronage of a local lord who's willing to brave the company of a magic user. They haven't been formally trained in any real sense of the word, except as independent seekers of knowledge.
Decades later, when Teclis established the colleges of magic, this was his explicit attempt to help Humanity by training them to focus on a specific wind of magic. (And believing that humans needed a formal system of training war magicians to help fight against Chaos) By this method he intended to avoid the bulk of accidental madness and corruption, on the premise that a human studying only a single wind of magic would be more able to handle it, and more able to understand it academically. This would coincide with the broader legalization of wizardry, since they suddenly had their own establishments in the middle of the capital.

>does anyone think Araby could have much more interesting religious lore?
Yes, but you think about it too much. I think faction religions in Warhammer should be "robust" so they can be used in clumsy, simplistic ways to add character to armies, provide some motivations for lore and history and distinguish factions.
Another thing that is could be somewhat "realistic" to consider is that in a world with different humanoid races and creatures that are extraordinarily hostile to human life and happiness, there would probably be less concern over more minor religious distinctions. So I think the distinctions you've described are possible, I just don't think they'd be relevant enough (politically, socially, militarily, magically) to get detailed. It would be as relevant as the differences in worshiping various Dwarf ancestor gods for instance.

I do think there should be an attempt to rectify Arabyan monotheism with the 'cosmology' of Warhammer (the Old Ones, the Warp/faith/emotion based system for Gods, the "Intelligently Designed" Elven gods and the "Evolved" Old World human gods). So, where does Arabyan's emotion-energy go in the warp when they worship their monogod? Does the monogod have a level of agency like other Gods? Is it a form of a pre-existing entity (like an Elven God) or a new one?

>>98425418
I'm more interested in this kind of background lore rather than religions, but truth is that questioning warhammer logistics and industry is a path to corruption and madness. If you ponder this too long then you will eventually fall into the nightmare trap of speculating on skaven caloric requirements and agriculture and then mutate into a chaos spawn.

There's four Temples in Nuln: The Temple of Sigmar, the Temple of Ulric, the Temple of Myrmidia and the Temple of Verena. So Knights of the White Wolf and Knights of the Blazing Sun not to mention the Sigmarite Orders. Knights Panther can always fit the bill, as they are secular and only help the Empire without much of a bias.
>>
>>98425418
>looks at army roster
>only characters, bestigors, and dragon ogres can get heavy armor and minotaurs only get light. Everything else is scaly skin or armored hide.
They don't. The weapons are mostly things like clubs, rocks, or stolen tools, and the models and art are just for rule of cool. Metal armor is claimed by the bestigors and weapons are piecemeal loot at best for everyone. They don't repair things and the closest they get to creating stuff is tying plates of armor together. Orcs actively smith and repair. But beastmen are wildlings through and through.

TL;DR: Professional soldiers typically made up less than 3% of medieval populations because they were expensive and specialized.

The long version: The <3% number is a basic rule of thumb that is often referenced with respect to anywhere between 500 and 1500 AD, which is a really wide time frame with a lot of different societies in it. If anything, it's probably way too big, but warhammer is a war-focused fantasy setting so we can be generous.

To give some examples:

During the Hundred Years War, peak numbers of English and French under arms (which of course includes conscripts, not just professionals) was less than 1% of their respective populations.

The largest mobilization I'm aware of is the Flemish in the Courtrai campaign, who raised an army of about 4% of their total population, again mostly conscripts.

Obviously, these are earlier examples, and Warhammer fantasy is modeled after late medieval (15th-16thC) HRE. Towards the later end of the period, as populations became both larger and more urbanized, militaries trended more and more professional. However, at the same time, those standing professional armies became smaller.

By 1521, for example, the HRE had an estimated population of about 23 million, and their total military forces, including circle-troops, private house troops, and professional state troops numbered around 280,000, or about 1.2%.

Why so small?

Professional soldiers require lots of expensive equipment, which is either paid for directly by the state or indirectly through their wages.

Not only the soldiers but their families must be supported by wages derived wholly through taxes, which means their existence is limited by being a small slice of a small slice of the revenue generated by the whole population.

When not at war, professional armies are a real nuisance as well, because they get bored and start robbing folk.

These are just some of the reasons, but hopefully it was illuminating. I do like your flavor anon :)

i know you guys dont like people like me; secondaries that have never owned a mini
but i am considering buying some TOW models soon
im here to ask if there are novels set in WH:FB that could be interesting to read
i have approximately 6000 hours across vermintide 1 and 2, and total war warhammer 1-2-3
i love this franchise, please dont just send me away covered in insults
>>
>>98426763
>im here to ask if there are novels set in WH:FB that could be interesting to read
Drachenfells, Riders of the Dead, Gotrek and Felix(stop when you get bored, as the series is very static after the first three books), Brunner the Bounty Hunter.
>>
>>98426625
one box of pox-wretches and one box of avatars of war marauders, mix em up to your heart's whimsy

didn't know about these, very nice. aos bad etc but the aesthetic on these new nurgle guys is significantly better than the aesthetic they had for late fantasy like the lord of plagues and especially the blightkings, eugh
didn't know avatars of war had plastic kits, very cool
>>
>>98426763

What >>98426771 said, though while Drachenfels and Riders of the Dead are both much better novels than the baseline GW stuff, they're pretty far removed from regular WFB canon (Drachenfels having been written in the late 80s and Dan Abnett not giving enough of a fuck to do any research writing Riders of the Dead).

I'd start with Trollslayer, if you like it plough through the Bill King Gotrek and Felix books till you get bored/reach Giantslayer.

The Brunner and Mathias Thurlman Witch Hunter books are pretty solid as are the Thanquol and Ulkrika Gotrek and Felix spin off books. Guy Hayley's Skarsnik is amazing

What armies/parts of the world are you interested in reading about?

i like them all honestly, but i like the empire, naggaroth, and the dawizharr the most
>>
>>98426763
The Gotrek and Felix novels bored me to death from the first volume, with Skavenslayer being the one exception. Try them out, but don't force yourself.
There are many novels for different factions. If you like dark elf stuff, then check out the Malus Darkblade novels.
>>
>>98426879
If you like cartoony stuff, sure. They were definitely a product of the endtimes and it fucking shows.

>should i just get the gotrik and felix anthology or the omnibuses?

The anthology is a collection of various short stories by different authors of wildly differing quality. Start with the first Omnibus and keep going if you like it.

>i like them all honestly, but i like the empire, naggaroth, and the dawizharr the most

You're pretty spoilt for choice with the Empire. Gotrek and Felix spend a lot of time there, especially in the first two novels, beyond that the Mathias Thurlman Witch Hunter and Brunner the Bounty Hunter series (both by C.L. Werner) are very good. James Wallis' Mark of Damnation and Mark of Heresy are both excellent, but significantly bleaker than normal Warhammer mileau. Gav Thorpe's Slaves to Darkeness Trilogy (Claws/Blades/Heart of Chaos) is an underrated gem that I'd fully recommend.

Dark Elf wise, the Sundering books are boring retreads of army book background that just sort of 'and then, and then, and then...' series of sequential events with nothing interesting inbetween. The first Darkblade novel didn't do a lot for me so I never continued with them, but other people seem to really rate them. I loved the original Warhammer Monthly Darkblade comics.

You're bang out of luck with novels about Chaos Dwarfs!

Can recommend Broken Honor if you you the ”everyday” issues the empire faces, in this case a Beastlord uniting the herds in Hochland while we follow the story of Erikson a mercenary captain forming and training a militia from a group of convicts.
You even get some point of views from the Beastmen too.

Like the other anon said get the first omnibus and see if you like it. I personally loved Trollslayer, but it's written as a linked collection of short stories, which you may not love. Skavenslayer onwards they are normal novels. Definitely don't skip Trollslayer though, it's a lot of fun.

You do you. If you mean the painting, 100% I agree. If you mean the model premise and idea, I disagree. If you mean the quality of the model, I'll half agree. It would be a lot better in resin, fdm just can't get fine enough detail work.

And with my new knight champion fully painted, my collection of 5th edition warriors and knights is complete and, perhaps more importantly, I've finally got a right and proper 2000 point army that I can be proud of after over 4 years of hunting for models from before the turn of the millenium. >there would probably be less concern over more minor religious distinctions
I mean fair, but then you would need some other twist on the mono-god theme, otherwise it becomes too bland a concept to merit further exploration.
>attempt to rectify Arabyan monotheism with the 'cosmology' of Warhammer
Actually a very good point. This would be a bit of a leap, but I would take inspiration from the really old WFRP 1e stuff that described the Reman Empire as Solkan cultists. An interesting plot thread could be that, terrified by Chaos, a lot of early post-vortex human civilisations turned to the worship of the gods of Law, Solkan in Remas, Alluminas in Araby, but the strictures of these gods proved to be just as incompatible with humanity as Chaos, so they all eventually fell? IDK.

The way things are going I wouldn't be too surprised to see them relaunched as the old Ogre Kingdoms for TOW in like 1.5 years.

This style of highligthing shouldn't work, yet, it does. Strange... Reveal your magicks anon.
>>98426340
Weirdly, no. It's one of those things you sort of expect to exist, but that's never been detailed. The knightly orders of the Empire were inspired by the concept of Errantry wars, all of the later order specific stuff, they apparently came up with themselves. Technically if you want to read between the lines you could say it's because knightly orders are not defined in the rules set out by Louis the Rash and Morgiana so they can't exist in Bretonnia, but really it's just a lore oversight and/or they didn't want Empire and Bret chivalry to have too much overlap. I've talked about this before ITT but even if Brets couldn't really have religious orders, something like the historical Emprise de l'Escu vert Ă  la Dame Blanche would absolutely have its place in Bret society if you ask me.

>>
>>98427919
Weight of numbers in which way. Because it cant win on static res. Most light infantry will beat theirs if they get the initiative because beastmen essentially have no defense beyond toughness. On offense, beastmen should win every charge except for ungors, and warhounds if you use them wrong.
A unit of 30 gors loses most situations, but 3 units of 10 gors win most situations. Its an army that benefits heavily from combined arms and diversity of units on the board. If you do monster mash, you'll lose, infantry spam you'll lose, mino spam another loss. But when you combine small parts of each they kick ass. Ambush is also amazing. A unit of 10 ungors in ambush pulls way more weight than it looks just due to how it forces the enemy to react. Expose a flank to open order fast unit? Turn to shoot skirmish archers? Waste magic on a 60pt unit? Each of those is worth more than the cost you spent.
All told, for being dumb beasts they require a lot of game knowledge and strategy to play well. Or spam 5 wizards with viletide if you want to go full degen.

If you're good at kitbashin, take some of those extra units and make like 10 warpgors. Or hell, even if you're bad at it since warpgors are supposed to look fucked. My recent tests with them post furious charge have made them genuinely good. I doubt they will be good enough to death star with, but minotaurs are already amazing at doing that now so they dont need a second option. Also make sure you have 15 ungors with spears. They suck ass, but you need them for stuff like primal herds. Ungors should otherwise only have bows.
>>
>>98428200
I built my initial 30 with bows before I remembered about primal heards. And I do have a ton of bits kicking around from over the years so I'm sure I can manage warpgors. Some solid ideas though, those units always slip my mind.

old warhammer stuff is notoriously bad fitting, especially like the early to mid 00s plastics. greenstuff or milliput is your best option. the dwarf warriors from that time are the same way, nothing sits right, massive gaps, massive mould slips. GW just wasnt on the ball with its mould designs back then and they never bothered to fix it. theres also a ton of janky shit like if i remember right to get skinks shields on you have to actually take weapon arms and use a knife to cut off the weapon and handle, and the instructions actually tell you to do this instead of just providing a shield arm.

I have an idea for an ultra-simple campaign system maybe for Battle march? Tell me what yall think.
>Players armies are seeking "The Triangle of Significance(TM)".
>After every game, players roll 2 dice if they lost or drew, 3 if they won. If 2 or more of the dice are 5+ they have found the triangle.
>The holder of the triangle needs to hold on to it for 3 games to win the campaign and losing a match will make them lose it to the winner.
>The twist is that every game they hold it the opponent will get a points advantage that rises with consecutive wins. Like 25% the first game, 50% the second and a whooping 75% more points the final game. Which could allow allies to join the fray
if someone wins against them, the clock starts over again

Backstory:
>Basic lore/narrative:
The Triangle of Significance(TM) was an artifact made by the lizard men and awarded to the high elves for creating the vortex. It found its way to the old world among the colonies of the elves that would become the Asari during the war of the Beard. It was looted from the woodies by the dwarves. These dwarves would eventually give it to the fledging (Currently living) Tomb Kings until a rat stole it. Said rat was ambushed and probably brutally sodomized to death by goblins somewhere in the badlands. Legends and rumors swirl that it has been found somewhere near Mt. Bloodhorn and with so many factions claiming rightful ownership, it can only end in violence.
>>
>>98431867

>>98431930
The green tunics pop out very nicely against the flesh, very nice lads.
>>98431867
Well a very basic criticism would be that this could very easily go on forever, you need some sort of winner-takes-all/nightmare mode to trigger after X matches, otherwise it could very easily devolve into a slog.
>>98430223
Well if you want my take, your big misstep here was painting the horses the same colour as the leather of the riders, making them blend into each other. I find that cavalry units really benefit from mounts being painted in their own distinct colour schemes that don't share any colours with the rider/equipment. The reds are also very muted, accentuating the brown blob effect even more. The good news is that this is all fixable, all you need to do is go highlighting the reds, leathers and horses each in their own direction and it should help the unit feel more distinct.
>>98428023
Well unless TOW completely folds, there will be a big Empire refresh eventually, when the narrative finally gets to the big Magnus v Kull showdown, but the way things are going that's probably not going to happen before 2028. However outside of a few core troops I feel like the empire is pretty well served, it's not like say the tomb kings, where a big part of their range urgently needs a refresh. + the Empire did get the new TOW-era accurate wizards, so it's not like they're completely forgotten.

Nah, dwarfs are great in concept and have a lot of strong core designs from the humble warrior, to slayers, miners, gyrocopters, etc. Their problem is that translating these concepts into nice looking wargaming miniatures is more challenging than you'd think due to the slightly fucky anatomy of warhammer dwarfs, which means sculptors have to get kind of creative with it, specially when it comes to multipose kits. But fundamentally dwarfs have a very strong core aesthetic, with a lot of sub-themes you can explore. Their lore is lacklustre, but that doesn't really impact what they look like on the TT.

Chorfs on the other hand have none of that, they're super one note as a faction, it's literally just "what if dorfs, but they were Baal worshippers and we crib the whole aesthetic from like how mid 20th century kids bibles depict the old testament bad guys?" They're very generic evil coded, their core units are all so similar as to be inter-exchangeable and all of their machinery sits in this very awkward "technomagic" corner that feels more like Warmachine than Warhammer and doesn't really work within the setting. The only cool thing about their whole army are the hobgoblins, which work much better as their own OnG/DoW list, even if their merc units are like the only breath of fresh air in an otherwise indistinguishable Chorf roster of differently sized angry golems.
>>98432370

One of the very cool aspects of 4th ed I wish they'd bring back was the universal monster mount list, which allowed you to plop any character on any monster pretty much, unless they were a named character.
>>
>>98432564
What stops you from doing that exactly? it's not like the orcoid profile of the rider matters much once on a monster, and this is not aos or 40k either where there's auras and interactions exclusive to certain unit keywords.

What a retard, how is any of that "one note"

Its mordor + mesopotamia + dwarfs, what other setting does such an innovative combo?

Are you one of those left leaning faggots that thinks that nothing should really be evil and every villain should have a trauma backstory that makes them semi-justified?

Core units interchangeable? Nigga what are you talking about? What other army has blunderbusses and rifle-axes for their infantry?

This is either primordial tardery or powerful bait

But fundamentally dwarfs have a very strong core aesthetic, with a lot of sub-themes you can explore. Their lore is lacklustre, but that doesn't really impact what they look like on the TT.

I've been saying this for years.
Most of GW plastic dwarfs since the release of the 6.5th book look very similar on the tabletop.
They all have that triangular skirt-body. And GW decided to give all of them beards that are longer than their head+torso.

They tried to get away with it a bit with the 8th ed plastics, attempting a plate mail and scale mail approach.

But, given the way they decided to take take their dwarfs design-wise really kind of locks them into a corner.

Or maybe I'm just an old man and can't let go how good dwarfs had it when they were all metals. A bit too whimsical, perhaps, but definitely much more memorable.

also >>98432902
The current plastic gyrocopter was the result of the retardation that "dwarfs never ever use wood" was. The only saving grace is the fact that's a plastic kit, because to assemble the 7th ed metal one you needed to be a master engineer.
But yea, the kinder egg capsule look of the current gyro makes more sense for a submarine than an helicopter. and as >>98432913 says, actual helicopters are probably the weakest choice for dwarven flying machine.

Among all the various models I and use as gyro, my favourite are the various Hot air balloon ones, the RPE ornithopters, and the various very simple-looking gyrocopters made of 2-3 pieces max

Warhammer Community has also been getting steadily worse and worse with every new iteration. Everything's split up into multiple categories but which articles go to which categories often make no fucking sense and multiple system have no dedicated categories.

I could understand their site being shit when boomer Kirby was in charge and funnelling the web design budget to a front company owned by his wife was the only value he could see in the internet, but modern GW are supposed to be more savvy.

Best way to make the riders more like Hobgoblins than just regular goblins? I'd like to try to march the proportions on the hobgrot vandals kit coz I'm using that for my hobgrots on foot.
>>
>>98434361
Generally speaking, warmachines pertains to regular goblins, while units made of actual soldiers might belong to the various typologies of goblinoid

Yea I don't thing it's as bad as people make it to be.
replacing the goblins or even just their heads would help.
I can see it converted very easily to a gnoblar scrap-launcher.
but even as a doom diver, sure is a big miniature, but it's not like it would matter too much.

the three most important features would be the yellowish skintone, the tusks and a more squashed round nose.
The latter two sound relatively complex but you could do a pair of tests that involve just two thick drops of sprue glue on the lower teeth, and circumcising and physically bending down a little bit their schnozs.
if you could recast the hobgrots heads that would certainly come in handy also for the hats though.

I mean.. how hard is it to just tell your opponent: "Dude please, can you avoid doing X or spamming Y?"
That's if it's a pick up game without any prior arrangement to meet.
If instead you actually had to talk about a date that worked for both players why not also mention that "Hwy, just so you know, we're not playing any cheesy bullshit, so please avoid bringing your unending horde of crap."

Bro you have no idea how much a fag the main guy was. He was a magic player and so up his own ass. He basically threw a tantrum when he was loosing unironically threatening to flip the table and pouting like a child. He also kept talking shit about my board even after I stopped bringing it "levels need to be 2 inches not 3 like some people"
Dude was straight out of the eltingville club and ruined my enjoyment of mordheim

I totally believe you, anon. Those people fucking exist and they're exhausting to deal with. Mordheim is what I'd consider almost a "self filtering" system because it's so absurdly easy to break that WAACfags out themselves immediately, pretty much as soon as you see their list. I try to end up playing with the hippie diy indie-gamer types. The ones who only buy from Ramshackle games and shit, recast, get mad if they see you pay for a GW box. they've got their own gayness and a huge thing for petty drama, but at least such people understand the spirit of the game when I crawl out to one of their events like once or twice a year.
Honestly I've found that purely locally, the OPR fags are chiller than people playing Real Warhammer and I kind of really really like alt activation. But it's not Warhammer any more then, it's OPR. But they're a much better class of people in the same store. All about picking your players, right? I'd rather have no game or some ruleslight bullshit before I play with someone that I just don't like.

Do I ask for priming and brush tips here or elsewhere? I use to build and paint minis 2 years ago, and only for 1 year period (good amount of 40k and AoS minis), so I'm lacking on some information but want to get started with all the Cathay minis I have.
>>
>>98434903
He would also take advantage of newer player DURING TEACHING GAMES. Like he made up rules and wouldnt answer questions that didnt benifit him. Last time I played him was when I was forced to durring the campagin.
My point is just because I dont like mordheim doesnt mean Imma no games.
The system is archaic. Good for the time but clunky. Igougo works in a rank and flank battle, not a skirmish

>I'd rather have no game or some ruleslight bullshit before I play with someone that I just don't like.
"No warhammer is better than bad warhammer"
A vital lesson in gaming
>>
>>98434994
this is really true.

Think about the time commitment you put in, the time to travel back and forth, the time to set up put away your miniatures, the time spent writing a list, playing the actual game...

If you're not going to enjoy it; you're unironically much better off spending that time painting your miniatures.
Learning to say no to certain people might be hard at first, but it will greatly improve your hobby life.
