>>98426331I've grown to appreciate Gygax more over time and Arneson less, but it's important to understand that it's not a story of Heroes and Villains.Arneson contributed important ideas, including the genesis of D&D. But, it's important to understand that while D&D was the first commercially available RPG, the greater concept had already existed for some time, with gaming fanzines offering rules for various proto-RPGs and many non-fantasy wargames having what we would today call roleplaying elements. Arneson was not some unique genius who ushered in a new age of gaming; he was just a guy who demo'd for Gygax a way to use Chainmail that made Gygax's gears spin.Gygax deserves a lot of credit. The thing I want to give him the most credit for is the amount of drive he had, though it was motivated by a less-than-noble idea. While he was working on D&D, similar games were being developed, including games by Avalon Hill and other publishers, who had rejected Gygax's proposals when he tried pitching D&D to them, preferring to develop their own in-house projects. So, he did his best to rush out OD&D as quickly as he could and then tried to patent the concept, including later coining the phrase Role Playing Game in order to distinguish it from being a War Gaming Supplement as he originally marketed it as when his initial patent efforts failed. The original OD&D was a slapdash cheaply printed set of booklets that hit the bare minimums of what could be construed as a commercial product, and that's all Gygax thought it had to be.What he thought he had was a way to corner the market, and while he did end up using the first-mover advantage to turn D&D into the dominant game, we could have been living in a world where Gygax's games were the ONLY games for 15 years or more. Thankfully, he didn't get the patent, and even more thankfully the game grew tremendously out from beneath him. By the time he was working on AD&D, RPGs had already become an untameable monster.

>>98426805I've got a lot of mixed feelings about it.There's tons of material, but it's often very unfocused and inconsistent, and it also just doesn't have the same strong elevator pitches that Dark Sun or Ravenloft or Faerun have. It would be interesting to go through it all and create a curated version of it, highlighting the more interesting bits and showcasing the setting's strengths, but that would also be a mountain of work that would probably be better spent just making your own setting.

There's a reason why people constantly reference Gygaxian D&D and not Arnesonian D&D. Arneson was a hack and as far as OSR is concerned, he's got nothing to do with it. In fact Arnesons approach evolved into modern nu-roleplaying storyfaggotry
>>98430138>There's a reason why people constantly reference Gygaxian D&D and not Arnesonian D&D.Because they don't really understand Gygax. Or Arneson, for that matter.Looking at their post-D&D games, made independently from each other, it turns out that Arneson's system Adventures in Fantasy ended up being oddly crunch heavy, including one of the most ridiculous encumbrance systems that actually had a characters speed determined by a percentile based chart of how much they were carrying compared to their maximum, while Gygax's first post-D&D foray (not counting Cyborg Commando), Dangerous Journeys, used a completely abstracted inventory system. DJ had a complex Magic system, but it was still largely abstracted like much of the system was and this carried on into Lejendary Adventure. Arneson came from a heavy, heavy wargaming background, and while he did introduce story elements to his wargaming, he was still very much a pimply nerd with the "storytelling" ability of a... pimply nerd. While he did make up rules frequently, he would also take note of them, and end up running an incredibly crunch heavy game, especially compared to Gygax.Gygax's favorite game to run was actually slimmed down OD&D with houserules that largely amounted to bypassing/ignoring some of the more clumsy rules. Funnily enough, Gygax actually didn't like heavy rule sets and even more despised what he called "rulesplayers," who very likely would have called Gygax a "storyfaggot" or whatever forced meme they're trying to push these days if they saw how he ran games.

>>98426331What do people think of this fist level clerical spell?>Bless item: A number of items equal to your cleric level divided by 2 rounded up can be blessed. When blessed add an additional 1d4 to attack rolls or ability checks using that item. If used to attack, the item is treated as a +1 magic weapon for the purposes of damage. Items retain this effect for a number of minutes equal to your cleric level. The idea is for a highly versatile spell that is still incremental in its effect. I like the idea of a cleric blessing a mob of pressganged peasant's hoes and sickled before facing off against an approaching undead hoard. Or a cleric uttering a short prayer and tapping a compass a few times that has gone haywire and it miraculously returns to pointing north.

>>98434136>Bless spell, which also can be used to bless items real shit? I thought bless could only effect creatures. Yah, that kind of makes it redundant then. I was thinking there could be the trade off of it only effecting particular items (so your bow and your sword would take up 2 of the possible items respectively) for the benefit of greater effect (d4 instead of flat +1) and utility/exploration bonus of it making a spy glass more effective or a rope less likely to snap.Maybe it could be a level 2 spell...

>>98435528Stop lying. There's no point in trying to turn 4chan into some sort of last stronghold for your blatantly false lies. 4chan may be the very last place in the world where something like your bullshit could ever endure or persist, because the truth would always surface and resurface. You will always be challenged, and you will always keep losing. The only way anyone would ever fall for your bullshit is if you indoctrinated them and forced them to only believe you, and never listen to any of the thousands of people who understand you to be wrong. The moment anyone steps outside of your echo chamber, takes a moment to look at the games from any perspective other than yours, they will see that you've been wrong and always were wrong, you just were too much of a coward to admit you've wasted your life dying on the hill of some lie. You lost before you came here. The only reason you still post as you do is because you think as long as you don't have to admit it, you can continue to lie even though you know you're wrong. That's true. You can continue to be a cancer that tries to cheat his way into some hollow, temporary respite for yourself, but the truth will keep reappearing no matter how much you scream your lies to try and cover it.2e is OSR. Always was. Even on 4chan, where the archive proves it. You can keep trying to troll and reshape the board in every unmanly and deceitful way your worm-like mind devises, but my earnest recommendation, a charity you don't deserve but is still offered to you, is to accept that both you and anyone else who even has the slightest bit of knowledge about OSR games know how much you're lying, and to understand it will never go unchallenged for long. >>98435234There's probably a smart way of doing it. A full-on mystery that can even take several sessions to resolve. Just dropping a Rakshasa on the PCs and saying "Deal with this" won't give them much of a chance to work out that specific weakness, but that's not the only way you can use monsters. If you've got a Rakshasa doing his best to eliminate all the priests in a town, that could lead to clues indicating he's trying to eliminate everyone who could potentially cast Bless. When 2e debuted, we were mostly still using 1e and still picked out bits we liked from 2e (personally, mostly equipment, spells, new monsters, and setting material). Though I'm sure it happened, I don't recall anyone I knew abandoning 1e and fully converting to 2e. Some still played any amalgamated variety of AD&D, Moldvay, BECMI, and home rules (Moldvay/Cook/AD&D was a popular early '80s combo). Anyhow, I'd argue the OSR never really existed, and there was never a Renaissance of any sort, as a lot of us never stopped playing the earlier versions up until today. The OSR had too much hipster-y, Adventure Time aesthetic and vibes in it, for my tastes.
>>98442478>Though I'm sure it happened, I don't recall anyone I knew abandoning 1e and fully converting to 2e.Most people didn't think of things in that vein. You didn't "abandon" 1e, because it was still compatible with 2e, and even in Dragon Magazine there was a soft period where material written using both editions was coming out before it became all 2e.It wasn't quite like when 3e came out, and the whole magazine instantly became all 3e.>I'd argue the OSR never really existed, and there was never a Renaissance of any sort, as a lot of us never stopped playing the earlier versions up until todayThat's fairly anecdotal, but the bigger picture is that the publishers stopped all pre-3e material in 2000, so all pre-3e lost support. Even Necromancer Games which specialized in Old School 1e-style adventures was making them in 3e using the OGL.But then C&C came out, and then BFRP and OSRIC and so on, and the old editions got support again. The whole "dark age" of old school games lasted only about four years (2000-2004), but then again so did WWI.

Why doesn't rock to mud doesn't shorten more sieges in AD&D?At 9th level a wizard can transmute enough rock that a 30 foot high curtain wall, 20 feet thick at the base tapering to 10 feet at the top, could have a 1 inch wide U-shape channel of mud penetrating the full thickness from the front face to the rear face, top to bottom with the two vertical parts connected by a 60 foot long bottom channel. If the channel was 2 inches wide then there are only 9 feet between the vertical parts. That cut out section of wall is going to slump under its own weight. The front and back faces weren't perfectly connected, being skins of stone blocks surrounding mortar and rubble, so could unpeel but even if the didn't you have a great target for an earthquake spell. Three such rock to mud spells could make an about 5 foot wide 6 foot tall tunnel through an average 15 foot thick wall. There could be defending wizards too but the ability of wizards to conduct sieges is being severely undermined.
>>98430365>Immortal, repackaged into one book with rulescyclopidiaImmortal rules were not repackaged into RC, there were just a very basic 5 pages of outline saying they can fuck over PCs but they don't usually bother and how PCs might become immortals. >>98446598>>98447127Any wizard that needs to use a spell above 1st level to end a siege shouldn't qualify as a wizard.Animate Dead Animals on a large snake skeleton should be more than enough to send a perfect infiltrator through any sewage system and still have the kind of strength neccesary to manipulate various gate mechanisms.
>>98448286Animate Dead is not a first level spell, bozo.
>>98449116NTA but different spell, he's talking about Animate Dead Animals which is from some 90s 2e bookhe's a dumb ass anyway because most snakes are above the HD limit for what a level 1 magic user would be able to animate, much less a snake would be large enough to do something like operate the mechanism to raise a portcullis
>>98449438It sounds like this dude is a retard nogames doing his damnedest to try and fit in with people who have actually touched dice
>>98449438>what a level 1 magic userSure, but we were talking about 1st level spells, not 1st level magic users.Even so, Animate Dead Animals allows [1+ to 3 HD animal: 1/caster level], so unfortunately that only means either a Heway or a Poison Snake for a 1st level magic user, but those still should be able to do the job and probably be much less conspicuous than a 30-ft long Constrictor Snake. A black mamba can actually grow up to 14ft long, and that's one of the snakes listed for Poison Snake. >much less a snake would be large enough to do something like operate the mechanism to raise a portcullisA 10ft-long snake using its full body should be able to manipulate anything a person can do using their arms, assuming dexterity doesn't need to come into play. If we're talking pulling levers or turning wheels, a snake, particularly a tireless zombie snake, should be able to do the job. Snakes are basically just a rope made of muscles, and the good thing is that zombie snakes can follow orders that would require more intelligence than an ordinary snake might be able to follow.

A minority refused—whether due to their love of that older style of play and/or dislike of what replaced it, or simply their reactionary natures—to adopt the new style. They merrily continued along year after year with their dungeoneering and sandbox play, even as 2nd edition took over and the very concept of the dungeoncrawl became an oddity in D&D, still using those "rules you never used anyway". >>98460393>clear that 2e is not OSR:Except he doesn't say that. Even in what you just posted, it doesn't say 2e isn't OSR, but just that people continued dungeoneering/sandboxing even as 2e became the dominant system. Considering 2e allows people to dungeoneer/sandbox and has many dungeoneering/sandbox adventures (including the rise of the first true megadungeons), there's plenty of those people who preferred that style of play who used 2e. Remember, this is the guy who includes For Gold & Glory in his list of true Retroclones that were part of the early period of the OSR. It'd be quite weird for him to do that if he didn't consider 2e to be part of the OSR.
>>98460481Simulacrum is coming at the OSR from a really G+ centric view, and that's why he gets a whole lot of stuff wrong and really just can't stop mixing in his opinions about stuff he doesn't actually know about.Like what the rest of the OSR community was doing while he was on G+ or what actual "old school" gamers were actually like.He seems like a guy who has a very LoftP-focused understanding of OSR, and that's extremely unfortunate. The more I look into this stuff, the more I'm realizing that G+ was some sort of proto-twitter or proto-tumblr and created a really fucking weird subsect of the OSR.
>>98459402>>98459446He periodically has these tics. Remember when he insisted that everyone dunking on him was losing the argument? I assume I don't even need to mention the "bogeymen" era.

>>98460663>absolutely mad schizo interpretationsSorry, that's all you. He's not saying 2e isn't OSR, but is instead trying to define OSR as a certain playstyle, and not one that couldn't be done in 2e. There's a lot to debate about his views on what OSR is, but nowhere is he saying 2e isn't OSR, and he even goes on to define "Classic OSR" as TSR-era D&D, which I'm pretty sure includes 2e. >oh but also the fact that he listed this late, failed retroclone It's listed there, with the full understanding that it's a 2e retroclone. There's really no way to argue around that, even though it's clear you were going to try. I don't think your emotional rant about the quality of that retroclone did anything to remove it from that list. The source you chose acknowledges 2e as OSR.

>>98460892>How about if I link to the actual writer of the blog series stating that 2e is not OSR except to people who consider every NuSR game OSR and even they have no actual reason to play it?So, he's saying 2e is OSR, he just wants to put some asterisks on it. And, he also says things in quite a different way than the way you chose to interpret it.>Of course, the OSR has drifted to a different, broad-tent sort of movement in the past decade. But in this later, broader-spectrum interpretation of OSR, I think 2nd ed is seen as so close to 1st that it doesn't really offer much for people increasingly looking for newer vistas. But, he's actually wrong about 2e only recently being included in the OSR. Or even just being included in 2012 with FG&G. >except to people who consider every NuSR game OSRAnd we go right back to pointing at someone like Matt Finch, and it's very hard to describe him as one of those "people who consider every NuSR game OSR." It's pretty odd to try and say that the original interpretation of OSR didn't include 2e, and to include OSRIC as an example, and then to try and omit the guy who made OSRIC describing the distinction between old and new school being TSR-era D&D's and WotC-era D&D's all the way back in 2008.

>>98461068Melan's stance on 2e is an outlier. That's pretty much an established fact where even the people commenting on his blog don't all agree with him.And the G+ crowd seems to have been much more interested in creating drama about themselves instead of making games. They existed, but their importance seems to have been mostly in their own heads.
>>98461092>>2nd ed isn't osr is an extreme opinionConsidering you're down to one source that agrees with that, and even that source said "Sure, call 2e “OSR”, what do I care", you're really got to do better to convince anyone that it isn't an extreme opinion to say 2e isn't OSR. Melan even had to go and play the No True Scotsman card to try and say that even though 2e is OSR, it is not part of "actual old-school D&D".
>>98434417There's no such thing as either.
>>98461004>Maybe the G+ crowd were emotional drama queensUnderstatement of the year.
>>98460990>Of course, the OSR has drifted to a different, broad-tent sort of movement in the past decade. But in this later, broader-spectrum interpretation of OSR, I think 2nd ed is seen as so close to 1st that it doesn't really offer much for people increasingly looking for newer vistas.Context, FishniggerWhat that's saying is "I know we're on plebbit so people will cry and wail if I reject the 'broad tent' definition outright but it's bullshit". Damn, autism really makes it impossible for you to read between the lines, huh
>>98462645Actually, the context is "The OSR definition is genuinely broad, and any efforts to pretend it isn't have crumbled to the point where even I can't meaningfully deny it, and the best I could do is try to deny it in a meaningless way where I say that the OSR definition wasn't ALWAYS originally broad, with an opinionated history that would not survive being peer reviewed and even gets challenged by the people who read my blog, and gets upturned with simple questions like 'if 2e wasn't included from the start, why did someone like Matt Finch include it in his OSR primer?'"He even acknowledges that K&KA used a more narrow definition than the considerably larger Dragonsfoot they spun off from, and that K&KA's definition that excluded 2e, B/X and BECMI was far from widespread. And that's all the way back to the early years of the OSR according to him, putting 2e squarely within every part of the OSR except the K&KA forum that excluded it (along with B/X and BECMI). The K&KA wanted a narrow definition, but the community and history rejected it from the start. Yet, even to this day we have a small minority of people like yourself unwilling to accept, that despite the staggering evidence against you, like sources you yourself provide but apparently haven't read or are constantly inventing nonsense "between the lines" that isn't actually there.>but it's bullshit"Like that. That's the part you're inventing that he never says and really couldn't say because it's both not true and even if he wanted it to be true he has no power to dictate anything over the OSR community. He might not be that smart, but he's at least smarter than Melan, who doesn't seem to appreciate how ridiculous he looks saying something like:>It is therefore * * O F F I C I A L L Y * * cast out into the outer darknessActually, considering the theatrics, Melan might realize how ridiculous that sounds and is hardly trying to be any sort of authority like you desperately wish he was.

The broader spectrum stuff he's talking about is stuff like NuSR.> But in this later, broader-spectrum interpretation of OSR, I think 2nd ed is seen as so close to 1st that it doesn't really offer much for people increasingly looking for newer vistas. This isn't in context of whether 2e is OSR or not. The thread in question was asking why 2e doesn't get much attention in the OSR community. It being part of OSR is a given. Sim is never saying it's not part of the OSR, he's trying to explain why it might not be as popular as the other editions, and he's not wrong.2e is the newest and the closest to 3e. To oppose the pull of 3e, which dominated the decade, you really needed to want something very different. That doesn't make 2e not OSR, it just makes it not as strongly tied to aspects that distinguish OSR games from 3e. Think of a gradient going from White (old) to Black (new). At the halfway point, a 50/50 white/black Gray, you put a wall separating Old from New, with that being 3e and anything darker than it (51%+) being classified as "New". 2e would be a darker shade of gray than 1e, but still be light enough to be on the "white" side of the wall. But, to people who only can see 1e and think that dingy gray is pure white, 2e would probably seem dark, almost black to them. What Sim is saying is that from an even broader spectrum, where even 3e starts to look on the brighter side of things, 1e and 2e would be basically indistinguishable.

>>98462835The obvious is that 2e is OSR, with even Sim admitting that.
>>98462835Why is it that whenever you're hit by something you have no way to argue against, your default response is to try and gaslight everyone? It's good that you're smart enough to realize you lost the argument, but couldn't you admit your defeat with a little more tact? It amounts to the same however you say it.

Sim is never saying it's not part of the OSR, he's trying to explain why it might not be as popular as the other editions, and he's not wrong.2e gets plenty of attention though. Even on Reddit, it gets just as much or even more attention than 1e does in the r/AD&D subreddit. On Dragonsfoot, it's discussed about as much as OD&D is. The reason it doesn't get as much material made for it is because it never needed to be cloned; copies were readily found all the way up to WotC reprinting them, and now the books are available both digitally and PoD. As far as material for the edition goes, there's so much 1st party stuff that it's one of the big complaints about 2e, which is kind of ironic.Yes, comparing it to 1e or B/X, 2e is not given as much attention, but compared to most of the individual retroclones, it's considerably more popular. Even compared to OD&D I think it has the advantage, though maybe not OD&D and all of its retroclones combined.
