My fav card, but hard to fit it in wheel decks
>>98430315It's more extreme with battles because they explicitly absorb damage from the player you're attacking and don't reward you for it until they flip. As a result they're much more committal and therefore require a higher payout to be worthwhile. Therefore the described issues are made more extreme because the expected payout is more than Goldvein Pick's 1 treasure token.

>>98431004If the consistent part is the etb then you've circled back to them being used just as a sorcery, at which point they're not justifying the design space an entire permanent type mandates.

>>98431067they're fine at b2 is also the point, you finding them cringe has nothing to do with their actual power level

>>98431071>>98431073Getting defensive that your generic wincon is called slop is indicative that it is indeed slop.

>>98431114You mean the community being stupid?
>>98431118like i said
>>98431095>accessing the back meant paying mana to increase the life totalIf you were only running it for the back side, yes. It would be a x mana do nothing. That's not the case though. Instead it's an x mana do something good, and then give the opponent x life to do something else good. One needs to be wroth the mana, the other needs to be worth the life. Maybe they didn't achieve that in the first set,Also lmao at people running zendikar (explosive vegetation). There's no fuckin way. Was standard that hard up?
>>98431100If your deck is considering a battle for its backside, then your deck is already interacting with combat. However decks that are mainly focused on combat aren't paying mana to not kill their opponent before they stabilize.
>>98431125So it actually depends on how fast you can psychic corrosion into peer
>>98431132oh NOW you've learned to read
>>98431106The tool is evidently broken as this in simply not infinite. Yes it usually ends the game, but it is in no way infinite.
>>98431125>play ramp>deploy psychic corrosion a turn earlier>deploy peer into the abyss before turn 6You can't in good faith say your bracket 3 deck won't have the mana to do this consistently.
>>98431148hence the term "sandbagging">and a simpler, more enforceable way that the LGS employs is just to limit all infinites (regardless whether they are 2 or 3) to be deployable only by your t7+ ownwards in b3, ensuring that (You) at least see a t6, just as gavin intended
>>98431155Actually I just never play combo or "I win" buttons so I'm always in the moral right.
>>98431160>i'm always in the moral rightsure you have that, i'll just have the technical right, aka the win in exchange, nice playing with you
>>98431130>for its backsideIt should be considered, but the only consistant effect is the front side. It is entirely feesible for the back side to result in killing your opponent quicker, whether or not that happened in the one set they released of it. The design space allows for interesting and useful cards that utilized tge mechanical uniqueness of the card type.
>>98431165Because I never run combo I run a lot of interaction, so your sweaty combos will never hit the board.
>Guy used spike feeder and archangel of thune to gain infinite life and put infinite +1/+1 counters on his 12 creatures. >He then full swung into me with city of fire and repercussion on my board only to get hit with comeuppance to be dealt 12(3(3 x Infinite)) damage to the face. He then told me my deck wasn't bracket 3.Most complaints about what combo is "unfair" at bracket 3 comes down to "wah you beat my aids with your aids."
>>98431128The problem is no decks cared about battles after their front face because the investment in flipping one was so large. The best color at actually flipping battles was red (no points for guessing why) which is also the color that can absolutely not afford prolonging games. Basically every piece of design surrounding battles points to their actual unique design space being extremely narrow, because if you want the backside to matter (which is the only reason a battle justifies its existence over a sorcery), it has to be an extremely large payoff that's just barely not large enough it's just an easier way to win the game than killing your opponent. That's the reason they got dropped. Because actually trying to fit something in this space without ruining a format is a nightmare.>lmao at people running zendikar (explosive vegetation)It was a major part of domain ramp, so yes.
>>98431148Deck composition matters most. If a combo is not consistantly achievable by turn 6, then it doesn't count. I have these guys in my marath deck, but I have not tutors and a meh card draw package. Outside of happening to draw them together, there is no way to win with them by turn 6, so the combo does not count.
>>98431184>finally someone that cares to stop what other people are doingNot even mad
>>98431193Forget them.
>>98431188what justifies battle's existence over a sorcery is it's a permanent
>>98431170If the consistent part is the front face, then decks will generally not consider the backside at all because of how big the gap is between resolving a battle and flipping it. This is acceptable design space for a set gimmick, but when you're talking about a whole permanent type, it has to do more to justify its existence than just be a sorcery that has some extra text in 2% of games.
>>98431200Battles are bounceable
>>98431196they cute
>>98431200Believe it or not people don't like random extra mechanics just for the sake of extra mechanics.
>>98431188That's not narrow, it's just difficult. Certainly aggro decks would be good at flipping them, but yeah, you're giving up damage one turn sooner. Surely more control-ie and midrange decks would benefit more if the backsides were better, though. It's can't be that difficult to find a happy middleground between winning you the game and being worth giving the opponent 4 life.
>>98431219Midrange/control would rather just run a bomb in that slot because it's not contingent on combat/burn to access.
>>98431202It's also a permant, and if they made the back better, even situationally better, than the opponent gaining 4 life, they could see play for both sides. But they gave up.
>>98431206they're blinkable
>>98431209I know you are saying that because of his ability, but it's ironic because he's also a planeswalker, which is an extra mechanic in itself.
>>98431225They gave up because the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
>>98431223But midrange and control are fine with combat, no? Outside of combo decks.
>>98431236If a midrange or control deck can comfortably attack and connect, then it's already winning.
>>98431234>having an interesting mechanically unique card type isn't worth the moderate struggle of designing around it>why yes, we did print anouther "do the thing again" card this setSo they're lazy.
>>98431248Yes although I invite you to try designing a battle that people will play for the backside without ruining a format.
>>98431246It's winning at the moment, but if he flipps he might win a turn sooner, or protect the win, or what have you. The design space is there is my point.
>>98431254That design space is called "win more" and historically it isn't very useful.
>haha lets play 4s!>go last>literally have 3 turns>guy has taken 5 extra turns and has 12 lands, spends 30 minutes jacking off his merfolk>table concedes out of boredom>next game>guy has the same capture of jing zhou, karns sundering, temporal manipulation extra spells in every deck>windmill slams value engines, tutors and free counters>leave after 30 minutes on turn 3 because I'm bored and hes playing solitaire>bitchhards that my vexing bauble should be considered in game for the remainder of the turn>walk awayWhy do people play this shit? It's a solved format. Your pool of cards at optimized edh is tiny. You can almost script all playlines and decisions in bash.
>>98431264Everyone above 3 has active brain damage.
I'm not very impressed or excited by what's in the hobbit so far, so good news for those of you who are, because my opinion is shit and always the minority so it's shaping up to be a big hit so far.
>>98431251How about Ghirapur Grand Prix. 4 mana ETB make some pilots or something (i don't know the ser mechanics), 4 health. When it's flipped, it's the aetherspark but not shit, so give it ward and a -x that deals x damage or something.I don't know.
Lifelink cards have a special place in my heart.
>>98431259Win more isn't win sooner, nor is it protect the win. Winmore is tossing cards into a pit unnecessarly when you already are set up for the win. This is directing damage elsewhere to protect the win or acieve it earlier using a card you already played.
>>98431264This is why you play b2. More restrictions lead to a more open design space.
>>98431188battles could be like:>The Alamo BattleWG2Battle, 4FlashEnters under your control. Attacking creatures are now attacking this battle. They gain trample. If a creature you control would die during the combat this battle entered in, exile it.Transformed:Enchantment>Remember The AlamoCreatures you control get +X/+X (equal to exiled creatures total power) and all activated and triggered abilities of the exiled creatures.
>>98431317The best way to protect a win is by winning and not dicking around spending a turn swinging at a battle.

>>98431365>Hmm yes my opponent is full swinging and I would like to punish it>I could exile their whole board>or I could try finagling my whole deck around blocking with specific creatures to accommodate this rules nightmare
>>98431371>Play a second 4/4 instead of the battle>Bonus: The 4/4 usually has its own beneficial text on it>???
Making half the deck group hug/politicsWould there be a creature type/playstyle/strategy that works best at finishing off the last guy 1v1?
>>98431343I'm the battle defender, amd I don't really understand why you would do this. This of all battles could just as easilly be the enchantment that's on the back half, with a self-exile and fog as an etb trigger for it. This is dumb.
>make a bracket 2 Yshtola group hug deck where there isn't even a real wincon just to play something more relaxed after one of my powerful decks kicks the shit out of the table>every time I do I get hyper focused by combat damage and removal even if I'm mana screwed/flooded and literally doing nothing while a much bigger threat is sitting on someone else's boardWhelp I tried to be nice but clearly my playgroup wants every game to be a nail biter. I'm rebuilding Cat Queen as a forced sacrifice deck.

>>98432646
>>98430962The answer to this dilemma is to make the front half more worth playing so that, even if the back half isn't worth the flip, you get value out of casting the spell. Fiora's a good example.
>>98432504Ashnod is fire design "do it again", but it might still bw fun with tiny artifacts that sac themselves for value.Marchesa on things with death triggers can be veey fun. My buddy has a deck wirh her and it's good. Never have I been more afriad of Reef Worm.Original Obeka is very difficuot to play around because her ability is only really beneficial on a very narrow margin of effects: one that go on the stack at specifically the next end step so you can fizzle them; if they go on every end step then she is very vulnerable to removal cause taking her out will take out half your board as well.

They spend their whole hand ramping into 1-2 bombs, and if you get rid of them, they spend the next 10 turns playing land-pass with an empty hand. That's why most precon commanders are easy sources of card advantage now, because if you don't hold the hand of these tards they'll never draw cards despite it being the best thing you can do when aggro is nonexistent.
