Listen To My Story. In a time of apparent magic... A player... a fox... a trump... a suit... a take... a trick! Welcome to the epic crossover edition of the Board Games General.Previous Thread: >>98389860Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/raw/h8Tz2ze8Stale survey results: https://pastebin.com/raw/scAkFdTvTQ:Do you appreciate outside IPs being used as crossovers in your board games? What about board game specific crossovers?e.g. Prince Elien from Summoner Wars rendered as a promo fighter in Battlecon.

>>98432668Zamn, anon really despises FF-X for some arbitrary reason.
>>98432643>Do you appreciate outside IPs being used as crossovers in your board games?Genuinely will stop me from buying a product, I despise it.>What about board game specific crossovers?I suppose that seems more tolerable but also a net negative to a game. I have no problems with in-universe coherence between boardgames, like how lvl99 did it with the battlecon cast reappearing in other games, eg. Argent. I suppose that's not a crossover by definition, though
>>98432643>Do you appreciate outside IPs being used as crossovers in your board games?I don't really care either way. Most of them are not good and are really just fan service. Some of them are pretty good. I like Slay the Spire the board game much more than the video game. There are more times when the IP based game is worse than the original (ie Fellowship vs. OG Pandemic).>What about board game specific crossovers?I also don't care but those are 100% fan service and I've never seen any add to a game.

I will reiterate that I kinda wanted to hate fromage because it was sold as oh so entry level friendly and cozy euro but it's actually pretty damn good and plays in less than an hour. Honestly an excellent design
>>98434582>fromage>simultaneous worker-placementwhat the fuck
what haave I done
You guys hyped Tag Team up, so i went to the Asmodee Premier Night they were hosting yesterday here in *random third world country*. Actually, the game was way more interesting than I expected, by looking at the mechanics I didn't think you would have as much control of the flow and strategy as you actually have. They gave me some stickers, I bought a copy. So I put them on the back of the box, because they're not going anywhere else.
>>98435237Well done migo!It is a game I never play just the once in an evening. I think one time a buddy and I sped run through 20 some games in one night. We just couldn't get enough, sometimes it was 5 straight games of one particular matchup we found engaging.
I'm fairly new to the hobby and I'm deep down the heavy euros atm. Cause of that, I'm looking to buy The Great Zimbabwe but it's sold out everywere. How is it anons? Does Splotter games get reprints from time to time? Or Im fucked?
>>98435928TGZ has had 4 print runs. I'm sure it will get a 5th but I would not hold your breath. PnP it if you can stomach arts and crafts.

>>98434582Agreed.>oh so entry level friendly and cozyNews to me. I picked it up cause it sounds like a relatively deep strategic worker placement with lots of different strategies one can pursue.Especially fond of:>You gotta balance how long workers are busy or you'll have dead turns>As long as everyone more or less knows what they're doing, turns are snappy and satisfying>Every quarter panel has distinct strategies which any player can disrupt theoretically, but with all the moving parts, everyone has to make concessions somewhere>Can make things more wild with custom buildings (everyone gets 4, take 1, pass rest to next player, repeat till everyone has 4)>Somehow there's a solitaire in here too

>>98437034I got drunk yesterday and bought earthborne rangers, 2 expansions, 2 mini expansions and a core set doubler for it.What am I in for?
>>98437159idk I don't play games but it looks gay
>>98436641HuhInteresting
>>98437159A game you have not researched properly, yet decided to spend +150 on
>>98437159A future north american eco-utopia that is conspicuously absent of any white people.
>>98437174I cannot find good lcgs in stock and tg recs are trash. Always sakura arms or gosu. Also looking for high interaction card games that evoke the mtg commander experience, like 4 souls or doomtown.
>>98437159A decently interesting setting is about the best thing I can say about it. Otherwise it's tedious, imbalanced, and half-baked. AHLCG is a far better use or your time and money.
>>98437475I proxied all of AHLCG revised core set, dunwich legacy, path to carcosa, forgotten age and chaoter 1 starter decks. Played a bunch of it but want something different. Sadly there are no multiplayer versus lcgs or card based games with high interaction. Why does EBR have such high praise and reviews? Should I sell it?
>>98437411When I was introduced to MtG Commander, I thought of it as an inferior Vampire the Eternal Struggle, so there is that.Tbh if you want an MtG feel, just play MtG. I have proxied a battle box, so that I can offer a fairly balanced game to other people, that's a good compromise IMO.(And premodern rules for that, or maybe I am just old.)Also, you may like Etherstone.
>>98437159A lot of sleeving. This is one spooky post as my buddy and I had finished a session of it few hours beforehand last night. The swamp is a brutal mistress. We had last left off on this bridge. And it wrecked us. We are trying to get to the Biological Outpost to the North. My bro went a bit ham on tests for the first few turns, all red eagle triggers that reduced the bridge to one strut token. Meanwhile I was stuck in a big pile of muck and could not contribute to traversal. When we are finally set up for a big turn and he one shots the Location with a successful six progress Traversal, it's challenge card... triggers bridge collapse and sends us plummeting to Cypress Citadel. A significant set back. Furthermore, I took some injuries from challenge trigger nonsense. The new locations high presence made reversal dangerous, and sure enough I fail a traversal, take injury #3 and the day ends. We were livid and immediately started Day 11. We came to hate the swamp and opted to teach Tumbletown instead for a different mission. Thank God we ran into a pilot and convinced him to fly us straight to town. Rest of the session was much more productive, and next time we will see if we can blitz it all the way back to the Outpost in a single day and avoid having the mission timer expire. I'm not buying any expansion stuff until we finish this campaign. Either we will replay the Valley with new characters + the mini capaigns, or dive into Legacy of the Ancestors.Good luck with all your crap, I think you went overboard, but if you come to love the system, that is a lot of goodies. You can return the card doubler though. You really don't need it.
>>98437411>Also looking for high interaction card games that evoke the mtg commander experience, like 4 souls or doomtown. How did you not come across Legend of the 5 Rings and buy some geezers collection.
Bday is approaching and I've wanted a heavy board game for a while. How's the elder scrolls? I've seen it getting a lot of praise by normie youtubers
>>98437675What do you want out of your heavy board game? Cooperative? Free for all? Team vs team? And whats your budget?
>>98437665L5R is 2 player only, no? Plus, I don't know anything about the lore and IP. Could just proxy it if I find high res pics.>>98437636I oughta do a battlebox but I'm just tired of the classic fantasy theme and mtg mechanics such as the stack. While the stack is fucking awesome, if you don't have a judge-level understanding of all the rules minutia, it's very hard to know how to play the stack well. My buddy does, and playing mtg with him always leaves me with the impression that I either can't do anything, or everything I do gets fucked by the time my next turn comes, or I get fucked by the mana curve. The latter can be mitigated by the battlebox, but still.>>98437643That sounds like a nice story anon. My drunk ass would've bought the entire thing but moments on the path and spire in bloom valley were lnly available for backorder. How replayable would you say EBR is?
>>98437688I'd like it to be playable solo and in 2-3 player co-op. Budget is not an issue since I'm getting whichever game we choose with some money from other dudes from the group
>>98437701Nta and I haven't played it but I don't think there's all that much deckbuilding in EBR from what I've heard and read.
>>98437701>How replayable would you say EBR is?Having now played a bit over a third of the Valley campaign: highly. The character Background / Specialization card pools are radically different for starters. I would be excited to see how a Shaper/Traveller deck handles problems compared to my current Concilliator/Forager. As for replaying the main campaign, even with just our current starting decks, there is a ton that we would do differently. Who we would have helped, failed missions we would try to accomplish on a second go around, regions we would focus on or try to get to earlier, deck customization options we wouldn't ignore this time.Add in the mini region expansions and I don't see how it would feel samey, other than having the story already spoiled for us.
>>98437488>Why does EBR have such high praise and reviews?Like with most overrated games, my guess is it's rated highly by people who don't actually play all that much and don't have a broad frame of reference. Part of it is probably the hippy dippy pretense it has though.>Should I sell it?If you're not hurting for cash, just play it. Take it from me though, if it starts getting tedious, it will not get better, and you will not see anything that engages you in any way beyond that point. Just read the scenario book and give it away or sell it.
>>98437701>L5R is 2 player only, no? Plus, I don't know anything about the lore and IP. Could just proxy it if I find high res pics.Multiplayer rules have existed for decades at this point. Decide on an edition (I came into it through Emperor edition and liked it well enough) amd proxy some decks. For the edition in particular, each clan has 4 orthodox themes to build around, plus your unorthodox or blended archtypes. Lore/IP knowledge is irrelevant. You like how Crane Clan looks, and the idea of dishonouring your opponents to shame them to literal game loss or dueling their best guys to snipe them appeals? Then go with Crane for a bit. Cavalry mongol hordes outmaneuvering blockers and having nasty retinues of high powered followers sound better? Cool grab them purple Unicorn clan dudes. Etc.
>>98437701If you want some simpler mechanics than the stack, want a good 4-5 players game and want to get away from a generic fantasy theme, then you should really have a look at VtES.
There's so many red flags about this yet the primordial monkey brain wants this right now
>>98437956Oh boy surely this cannot disappoint.
How was your July, anons?I am pleased as punch.
>>98435129>what haave I doneBuy an untested, easily broken game; and also a pretty great game for somebody that is getting bored of the original GWT.
>>98436641>It's real
>>98432678Tbh, when that one Squenix guy announced that it was some sort of weird soul-migration transdimensional sequel to FFVII, it made me yuck-face.I think that was the exact moment I lost the last fuck I could have given about the fate of Squenix.
>>98438044Very nice month anon, I still gotta print Mottainai (and Glory to Rome), such excellent games.Pretty happy about my month, playing Pax H+ 6 times feels so great, once people get over the seemingly confusing terms and concepts, screwing each other to setup your wincon becomes so satisfying. Also finally tried Curious Cargo, and it broke my brain, I'm usually pretty good at those kinds of games but this one really took me by surprise, I ought to play it more, and I wonder how Pipeline is in comparison to it.
>>98437763Nta but might I ask you to shill the game to me? Never really looked it but I kept hearing it's quite goodPlus I just randomly found the base game + the complete imperial cycle (whatevermany cards that is) for €70, I assume that's a good offer?
>>98436641Kai Jensen said this was coming at ConsimWorld this year and loved the initial design, new piece prototypes, and art treatment. I know O'Toole gets a lot of hate on here but his rework on Age of Steam made the game much better.
>>98437956Looks quite SHUGGY
>>98438044I did not play much in the second half of the month.
>>98437956Kinda getting sick of videogame to board game conversions but also I am somewhat tempted by some of them. And at least they come with a readymade soundtrack you can put on while playing.
>>98438044I think this july is the first month in like 5 years I have played FUCKALL and I have underestimated the part that regular game nights play in my mental wellbeing, as zoomeresque as that sounds
>>98438397>>98437763I'd be interested as well
>>98437956its just a 2p duel where you change the rules, looks a bit like That Time You Killed Me but with only one board and pushable rule tiles. Looks interesting but i'll wait for more info.
>>98438321>Pretty happy about my month, playing Pax H+ 6 times feels so great, once people get over the seemingly confusing terms and concepts, screwing each other to setup your wincon becomes so satisfying.Very jealous. Love me some Pax H+ and it hasn't gotten any love in a while.

>>98438814from that list i've heard of Zoo Vadis and Trailblazers, so eh, maybe theres hope the new project wont be complete ass
>>98438814Wait, you are not familiar with Reiner Knizia?
>>98438824Nope. I am what you call "a secondary trying to become a primary."
>>98438832Ok cool cool, first time for everything. He's one of the hobby's mst legendary designers, most famous for his slew of bangers in the 90s and early 2000s. He gets contracted all over to pump out games, which means plenty don't reach the quality of his greatest hits, but when his stuff sings, it roars.
>>98438837Duly noted and thank you. Learning stuff like this is very intriguing cause it gives me rabbit holes to dive down.Board games in my household (and larger area) have always been super casual with the most complex being Monopoly and commonplace choices being Sorry and Trouble and the like.In my house when I was young, I was always the one looking into new board games, but I never knew sites like BGG existed.I got super into a card game called Killer Bunnies for a while, then kinda dropped off board games entirely cause there's nobody I know in my area for regular game nights.Another favorite when I was young was Magic Hill. That one got donated to my high school theater teacher a while back and has likely been destroyed since cause it's too complex for casual board game day in a high school classroom. :^)Nowadays, I've been trying to get back into board gaming and been pushing myself to reach out where possible, but damn man there ain't shit in my area. Even fucking Facebook has barely anything.
>>98437956Waiting on the rulebook pdf.
Games with this aesthetic?
>friend bought Clank Legacy>but we can only play one day of the week, if one of the group doesn't have a 9-5 schedule that dayWhat was he thinking, we're going to play this like once a month. He has a lot of disposable income though, maybe I can push him to buy a game we can actually play.
Still waiting on the rule differences/rulebook for Kinoko Kombat...

>>98438864See if your local game store hosts board game nights. If they don't, ask if you can run a Meetup there (usually they say yes if they have a cafe or something they can sell overpriced food from). Sometimes you gotta start something yourself.
>>98438932>local game storeDon't got one lol
>>98438959Ouch. Find a cafe or something and ask if you can use/rent a room/corner.

>>98438976Just find a spot that can accommodate an influx of people (even a library), then make some flyers/FB group/Meetup/Aftergame group (Aftergame is focused specifically on boardgames, Meetup has gone full jew). Good luck.
>>98439004Thank you, I shall try and apply myself.
>>98438976I'll give you the same advice I give everyone because it was successful for years in my area (only stopped because of COVID and I didn't feel like starting it up again).1. Find a close dying mall with some kind of food court setup2. Set a date and time for all comers to board game meet up3. Advertise on Facebook and get permission to put of flyers at gas stations4. Bring your. Have a few for head to head and more for larger player counts5. Don't plan on playing anything yourself. You might, but your role should mainly be for teaching games6. Count on low initial turnout.7. Advise people going to buy a drink or some food from the food court (this is important. Mall owners might not like you stinking up the joint with nerd funk, however, it's a much bigger bitch to kick out paying customers than non-paying ones. Especially in a dying mall).8 make it a weekly meetup spot. Do it during weekdays when kids are in school. This keeps your typical attendees at adult level and is much easier to get the non 9-5 M-F crowd coming. Those people have a hard time finding shit to do socially, so they are more likely to bite the bait.I did this and after six months it was a self sustaining creature. Had to stop going when I got a normal human work schedule, but the setup lasted around 8 years until COVID smashed it and nobody picked it back up.
>>98438928Summoner Wars and Twilight Struggle have yet to lose their magic 15 years and 10 years on respectively. Wild that I am still mostly 1v1ing with the same guy for SW since we both first got into it.For games that technically go higher in player count but that I prefer at 1v1: Pax Renaissance and Innovation are my jam. Chaotic swinging board states and finding surprising ways to stick a spanner in the works of whatever my friend has got going are great.Lastly, Sakura Arms. Ever since Ashes came out, I have become increasingly appreciative of very tight constraints.7 card deck and 3 card Ultimate card pool leaves very little forgiveness in deck brewing, while also encouraging spending rounds withholding info on what you brought to the table (and vice versa sussing out what combos the other dude is packing). The character design is also quite varied and offers a satisfying freedom to come up with your own synergies despite the deck size limitations.

>>98438837>most famous for his slew of bangers in the 90s and early 2000s.Bit of an understatement. Knizia’s last decent game was Quest for El Dorado and that was nearly a decade ago. Everything else he’s made that’s worth playing was made before 2005.

After playing multiple Terraforming Mars games (including daft), I think it is overrated. It has the wingspan problem where some cards are just vastly superior than others, (like card draw actions) and you snowball the other players. Sure there are games that are more directly competitive vs ones where both do their thing until time/turns run out and a winner is declated, but I think the crux is enjoying the play. >>98442410O think it depends on the player's mentality. I handle getting crushed in pax ren just fine but I always played competitive and hard vidyas. Meanwhile I feel my lifeforce leaving me while I lose at mps slop because I feel like I wasted 2-3 hours of my life

More luck with dice rolls out the ass, more asymmetry. After buying these two I no longer have any wish to play TS ever again. TS is a very swingy, frustrating game that has the pretense of being serious. IS is an actually serious game, and Labyrinth makes no such pretense and is just more fun.>Quartermaster General: East FrontLast year I reported that after a couple of dozen games it becomes harder and harder to win as Germany. Well well, this August should prove interesting. A close friend of mine is on extended Paternity leave and I am on Summer Break. We are committing to a deep dive on Summoner Wars. The plan is to play 32 matches, and a player cannot pick a faction they've previously piloted. By the end, both us will have played all the base faction decks. I'll be logging plays on a spreadsheet so we can keep track of it all. Should be fun.
>>98444099You shouldn't take it that I'm an expert on the game. I only play within my group, my brother and one other guy. It's just that skill difference in the game is pretty decisive. >I found to have won/lost two of my 5 games due to what trade goods came up.I don't think there was one game that was decided by demand alone, or even significantly. I generally play in a way where I leave myself options to be able to win any type of good. Not just leave India to the brits and cry about spice coming up 3 times in a row or whatever.Every time the guy who loses was just strangled out of Europe or like two other continents over the course of the game. My games tend to have me being either on equal points or even behind for the first few turns, and turn 4/5 is a massive swing when all my advantages turn into and inevitable win. In 20 matches I haven't played the game through Turn 6.>goto ministers for England?Mostly event driven. Not just leave India to the brits and cry about spice coming up 3 times in a row or whatever.Very fair, I just found that our games came to that state naturally. Not by a LOT ofc but by that sweet overpresence of 2. You know the scenario; England tries to catch up in sugar cane, gets it to a tie and suddenly the initiative drastically shifts and eg. France forces a reaction by taking baltic trade, or the majority in the 3 VP area.I really like the game and talking about it makes me want to replay it because it so so pleasingly tight. I find it interesting you barely got to counting vps, I think only one of our games ended before that. It's a great game, but I ultimately sold it, the long heavy 2p game slot is just too competitive.

>>98435129okay so El Paso is fucking garbage. It removes stuff but doesn't add anything new. The cards are small and the FUCKING DISCS are PRINTED PICS of real discs on cardboard. They went as cheap as possible, even the score pad is in black and white not color. Just garbage. The play is dogshit too, it's no less complex than GWT it's just that workers are cards and go in your deck and come out. I was hoping for something more streamlined to get the family involved and get that GWT feel, but it's really just mediocre.New Zealand is a mind fuck, you can see every idea they had in every game and expansion come out. Our first play was 104, 109, 114 and we each did radically different things. The biggest difference is the swap cards are difficult to come by and you really don't cycle your deck many times. The bonus cards that you buy for gold nuggets add something but I'm not sure it's as much as it seems at first. It's good though, if I had to pick one GWT, NZ would be it- not because I like it better but because I'm not going to get as tired of it as I can the others. At least I don't think I will.

>>98444525The reason demand and VP tiles never play too much of a role in my games is probably two-fold. One, they are rarely lopsided towards one side to begin with. And two is part of the reason some people find the game boring to begin with. Every action has a very explicit value, and an opportunity cost associated with it (not taking some other action with a likewise clear point value). So if I wasn't taking care of furs in NA this round and let the brits run away with it, I was securing some other position, giving myself advantages elsewhere. The interesting part to me is that despite everything in the game having this clear point value in the immediate sense, there is a second layer which is much harder to assess. Just because you consistently take actions which have more immediate "points" (whether it's 3 VP in this scoring phase, or simply getting 6 more action points via high-value investments or events) doesn't directly translate to a victory.Simple example, if you get a bunch of extra ships for cheap, you're technically far ahead in APs spent, but you still have to actually leverage those ships into a proper advantage in order for it to actually matter. This is why my tendency is to play from behind. Less immediate point scoring, focusing on the long-term. But it's a balance since you don't want to outright lose before those get built up.>you barely got to counting vpsWell, VPs are counted every turn and there is an instant win condition at 0/30 VPs. It's probably 50-50 outright wins in my games versus concession by the side that is clearly going to lose next turn.

>>98448779>>98448597>wehrlefags in charge of having introspection or understanding the games they're playingLet me put this to ya straight. You don't ACTUALLY like the moment to moment gameplay in Arcs because it actually does not have that much going for it strategically or even thematically. You think the best word to describe it is "unique" or "cool".Why? For the same reason you will say to others that the Blighted Reach is the real game and border on not even recommending the base game. Because you aren't drawn to the actual gameplay. Because what you really care about is that in Blighted Reach you get your own unique little Fate(tm) which contains a bunch of cards. It's a delight to explore the different fates, each one bringing its own surprises, and what's more! The fates function like a storyline, and if you fail at any stage, aw shucks you just can't help but want to do it all over again! And this time, succeed!Napkin math, this game is designed for you to have a sense of wonderment and discovery of its content for at a bare minimum a couple of dozen games. For the amount of rules load it has, it is absolutely huge.Put differently, this trash game needs a pseudo-legacy aspect to pull rubes in and keep them interested. It's not actually good, just like Legacy games by and large are not actually good. If it were just the base game it would be pretty much forgotten by now.I dare any of you little pricks to actually explain how the combat, or the base building, or anything else in the game is more engaging than Eclipse. Don't look at me with that pained little smile that indicates a bleeding anus as your 10 ship fleet is being annihilated in one turn by someone who spent 4 actions to rush over and kill it. >>98450391>establishes permanent presenceexactly, and that's why Arcs doesn't have "base building" despite having buildings that players build. you're this close to understanding why you're bad at the game, and yet you don't want to meet the game at it's level, because you got your ass handed to you and you didn't want to figure out why.
>>98450395Do I have to explain to you how quotes work even further, or can you Google it (or ask your favorite slop model)?>the cities and starports have different intrinsic functionI have a combined question of "What?" and "So?". The core function is largely the same, they expand your general capabilities and army building capabilities. How they actually work is rather different due to the schizophrenic nature of Arcs.>muh handThe mathematics of this have been explained to you multiple times. The root fact remains that there is easily a 5x difference in the value of commonly occurring hands, and all of the rest of it is pure cope. I accept that you may be playing with a group you're able to outplay with shit hands, but I'd hope anyone posting here is smart enough to understand it.
>>98449899In all honesty, I like Main/Aux 2 better than Main/Aux 1.Main 1 is good, Main 2 is better.Aux 1 is bad, Aux 2 is good.In addition, the overall card power of 1 vs 2 is definitely skewed a little bit towards 2.There are of course highs and lows in both sets, but Main 2 is a "hitting its stride" moment for Compile.

>>98450627yeah, it's the most common complaint, and I had it too for a while. what's funny is playing Arcs and getting good at it helped me get good in other games too, because now i have a keener eye for opportunities and shenanigans. To be a tad more serious though, I wouldn't have such a hateboner for Arcs if people were simply honest about what the game is. It's not strategic. It's 50% luck and 50% the tactics of being able to actually use the hand you're given. There's a reason I don't rant about Challengers or Tag Team or Toy Battle or many other games. It's the fact that the people who enjoy them don't pretend the game is something it's not.

>>98450497"Bad" is pretty subjective of course, I suppose "not well-designed" is a better phrasing.>Art & ThemesObviously good. Apathy does a fantastic job of implying the cards are dedicated to just not caring. Love is a cross between "having compassion for your 'opponent'" and "being fixated upon them." Hate is symbolically just AM lol.>ApathyApathy has a single mechanic and I am not convinced it does it well after having used and faced it a few times. Namely, flipping card face-down. 1 card builds value off face-down cards, the others flip in various ways, decent utility and the only outlier (meh) is 2, which forces all middle commands in this line to be ignored, BUT the card self-flips when covered.>LoveI will have to adjust my rating up a bit because I just spent 5m researching how "opponent's cards" work (you can play them on your side so long as it's the line with their Protocol), but this is the big good outlier here. It's the only one in set 1 that has card theft and gives you fuckloads of reliable draw gimmicks, often at the cost of sustaining your opponent (but less than you're gaining). Mechanically interesting while being useful without being too much.>HateHate also has a single mechanic that I feel isn't done well, but not because it's kind of weak and more because it's kind of oppressive. Self-describes as a mutual destruction type of Protocol, but it's really more just "get rid of your opponent's board at the cost of some of your cards, but also has a reliable draw engine card, so it's not too bad at all."If we play ban draft format (1 2 2 1 same as draft) with set 1, Hate is always banned lol.Overall, 4/6, all 3 have great themes, but only Love is balanced enough. Definitely a "only if ya really like the game" kind of buy. I don't mind cause I really like everything else. Excited for Main 3.

>>98451829> Red StrikeWhy have you sold it?
>>98452116Simple: there are too many fucking air units. One of the biggest changes the designer did compared to Gulf Strike was make every air unit counter represent a single squadron rather than something larger like a wing. This more than doubles up the number of counters in the game, with there being noticeably more air units than there are ground units. Even in the smaller scenarios three quarters of what you'll be doing is going through highly procedural air combat over and over again. Its simply too granular of a system especially when all the ground units are appropriately scaled to brigade or division sized units. I vastly prefer The Third World War. It has its flaws as a design (retarded air superiority) but even at its largest when all the fronts are combined its still generally more playable than Red Strike is in its smaller scenarios.
>>98437742>if it starts getting tedious, it will not get betterThat's not true. I fell out of love with it around my fifth playthrough (after getting Spire in Bloom and kinda being disappointed). >>98452231You're giving off strong daddy energy. It's hot.
>>98451658Pretty based tbqh
>>98452231>Moment to moment gameplay is called tactics not strategy.Moment to moment gameplay includes everything going on in the game, from considering tactics and strategies to feeling the sting of drawing a hand that has nothing you want in it, to feeling like a million bucks because this "chapter" you managed to build a ship and take a court card, to focusing on the monkey smashing cymbals in your brain as you wait for 3 people to reconsider which card they're going to play 5 times each or smiling in quiet desperation as someone comes over with a barbed dildo and fucks you up in a way that will take you half the game to recover with no counterplay. Let me make this clear once more. I literally do not believe you would be playing this game, defending or shilling it if it were not for Blighted Reach.>>98452237You can do the comparison to SE4X, I haven't played it.
>>98452237I'd argue that would make the comparison less compelling. SE4X infrastructure is built with a desire to see a return on investment. You put in all that money and time, you don't wanna see your colonies and shipyards and MS networks to just die in a turn or two, so you park ships above it or near it to intercept enemy attacks, posturing for control. But in Arcs, the opportunity cost for building is minimal, and the cost on destroying can be more than the cost of building. And the need for control is also minimal/situational, depending on the leaders, lore and fates, with the only three mentions of needing control in the base rulebook being slingshot movement (enemy control stops you in the gates, ties don't), taxing opponent cities (you usually don't need control for your own taxes) and building undamaged structures/ships (this can be important but also can be whatever, if the enemy Provokes Outrage on Psionics by killing your 1 hp city while trying to raid you for the last psionic you just taxed out of that city, that's their problem, not yours.)tl;dr: Arcs is a game for the nomad lifestyle. Cityslickers in shambles rn.
>>98452424>to feeling like a million bucks because this "chapter" you managed to build a ship and take a court cardif it takes you 6 action cards to build 1 ship and take a court card, we in the industry call that a "skill issue."
>>98452454I'm sure your group only reconsiders the card they will use for pivoting only 4 times as well. And I'm sure there's no actual monkey with cymbals in your brain, because it's actually empty.
>>98452484You didn't address his point. The prelude system let's you cover lots of action economy ground.
>>98452514There is no point because the "point" was taking a hyperbolic statement literally. The core fact beneath all the cope remains that your options in a round can range between 6 (sometimes even less) mediocre to useless actions to 15 (sometimes even more) great actions that can propel you pretty much straight to victory. Based on things which are mostly out of your control, like the number of pips on cards you draw, the suits of the cards, the current board state, and what other people use as leads or whether they steal initiative before you can. There is simply no way you're coping out of the fact that drawing a hand full of cards that are out of suit and/or have high ranks is simply shit and you'll be doing pretty much nothing for the entire round. The game is built to be swingy. The core mechanic that facilitates it is the trick taking system. It's fine if you like it I guess, but if you do not recognise this, there's no real point having a conversation. Play more games and think about the systems you're engaging with at least a little bit.
>>98452575My point was you using hyperbolic statements in the first place. You never played Arcs, so you don't know anything about the game, and intentionally overshoot your descriptions to make them sound silly, which only makes you sound silly and low skill. All four suits of cards are good. Low on pips means high on number for Surpassing and taking Initiative. Low Surpass number means high pips and more actions. There are no bad hands, only bad uses of a hand. Deal with it, or at least follow your own advice and use your brain.
>>98452644>There are no bad hands, only bad uses of a handNTA but this is simply untrue for any game where card draw has a significant influence on what actions you can take. You can absolutely have shit hands that put you at a serious disadvantage. The trick is to design the game so that a bad hand of cards doesn’t immediately lose you the game, and there are lots of different ways to accomplish this. That being said I have not played Arcs so I can’t comment on if it achieves this form of design or not.
>>98452644Again, all cope. The thing about these kind of copes is that they fall apart when used against someone who actually played the game.Every single>just do Xkind of argument you can pull is either extremely contingent on other factors (like everything else in the game), or does not apply in some situations, or is simply not feasible in any broad sense due to the action economy. If I have a decent hand but am 4th in turn order, in order to even have a chance to do the thing my cards say I should do, I need someone to play a lead card that lets me piggyback off of it and/or I need to get initiative first to set something up. It can and does happen that people keep stealing initiative in front of you, and by the time you actually get to your turn to steal initiative and start off your chain of cards, your hand is almost empty. In my last couple of games, there were at least two extreme cases like this. One guy drew 4 red cards immediately after his fleet was destroyed. He spent the chapter doing nothing. Couldn't even copy a build because nobody played builds. Final game, 3rd chapter, I draw 4 yellow cards. My fleet is full, and I don't need any more cities. I spend the chapter doing also pretty much nothing. Like a couple of moves, a tax and an influence kind of nothing. Meanwhile everyone else is zipping around the board doing shit.>You never played ArcsYes, it's my thing to look up the rules for games just to argue about them. Get fucking real moron.By the way, just in case you want to repeat the skill issue canard. I won 3 of 4 games we played. The game plays itself. I hated every moment of it.
>>98452692Just out of curiosity what games do you consider truly strategic?
>>98452709>truly strategicThat's a term that can start a whole 'nother discussion as it can imply lots of things. I use the distinction of tactical vs. strategic primarily based on how much the game lets you plan and how much it pulls you around by the nose. Playing the game versus the game playing you. Input/output randomness also ties into it somewhat.Arcs has the most extreme "pulls you by the nose" to rules load ratio I've ever seen. It is honestly impressive.I'm this guy.>>98444006Imperial Struggle being my favorite 1v1 game might indicate where my distaste towards Arcs comes from.Other than that, I'd generally point at stuff that has low randomness (Splotters jump to mind), or even random as hell but designed in a way that you're piloting the direction of your play long term. Like an Eclipse or a Clash of Cultures.
>>98452807But that's not what strategy and tactics mean
>>98452807>or even random as hell but designed in a way that you're piloting the direction of your play long term. Like an Eclipse or a Clash of Cultures.Usually games like that need to be long. Enough rolls of the dice (proverbial or otherwise) and eventually the variance will level itself out.
>>98452863>But that's not what strategy and tactics meanYou're free to elaborate
>>98452807>I use the distinction of tactical vs. strategic primarily based on how much the game lets you plan and how much it pulls you around by the noseI understand your point but that isn't at all what "tactical" means. Tactics are all about identifying or creating opportunities and then seizing them, usually in service to advance broader strategic goals. Strategy is the what and the why while tactics are the how, when, and where. So in board game terms a more tactical game would reward quick thinking and willingness to adapt to a changing game state, while a more strategic game would reward clever thinking and developing a more elaborate plan.
>>98451805It shoulda been green.
>>98452876Strategy is your overall game planTactics is how you react to the board changes and your opponent's actions while pursuing your game planPax ren is highly tactical but you are always in full control of your decisions
>>98452881I'm not sure where exactly we disagree. I agree with your definitions broadly, but I don't think there is such a clean distinction between the two. If I misread your post that "pull around by the nose" was about Arcs specifically and not about tactics generally then I apologize. >Any recs?Probably something like Paths of Glory or Empire of the Sun. They use more or less (less in EotS's case) the same CDG system that Twilight Struggle and Labyrinth use, but stretched out over a much longer period of time with a much larger decision space instead of the whack shit TS and Labyrinth can devolve into. Failing that you could just go maximum grognard but that leaves the realm of "strategic gaming" and enters the realm of "strategic simulation".
>>98452962>If I misread your post that "pull around by the nose" was about Arcs specifically and not about tactics generally then I apologize.Well, yes and no. It's again something of a matter of degree and multiple aspects of game design.CDGs like TS/Labyrinth/Quartermaster General (have to mention it at every opportunity) have an element of this in that the cards dictate what you CAN do, to the point of switching up your entire strategy based on a hand you just drew. However, in the former two, the concept of operations does a lot to allow you flexibility and freedom, and in the latter, there are lots of generic cards that allow you to attack or build armies or whatever, resulting in the same.Arcs takes this to the extreme where when you draw a card you know immediately what the game is telling you to do and what you cannot do. Add this on top of the general swinginess and there is no long-term predictability of any kind. You might have a hand with good potential for X or Y, but other players fuck it up completely by playing the wrong suits, or playing the suits out of order, or not letting you get initiative, or simply removing the thing you were planning to do from the options even if you ultimately get the action you want. So it boils down to being led by the nose by the cards and the board state.>Paths of Glory or Empire of the SunYeah, not a great chance I'll get either one of those properly played, but I'll throw them in the wishlist. Maybe someday.
