>What is the most fun part in the last game you played? The tactility of a component, a specific clever move, a perfectly timed action chain, the clutter of fistful of dice chucked?
>What do you find most statisfying in a game? Eg. Filling a recess on your board, completing a set, finishing a polyomino shape, taking your opponents pieces off the table etc.
>Bonus question: what about boardgames annoys you the most?

Two hours until game day.
>>
What is everyone planning to do with their board games after death? I've always heard that family members don't want 95% of the stuff in your home (although everything in my home is high quality, so they'd be retarded to not replace all their crap with my s-tier stuff), and I could definitely see that happening with boardgames. Would you donate them? Try to sell them beforehand to increase liquid assets just a little bit? 3d print an extra large casket that can hold you and your favorite games?

Question addressed to the demented light weight purist boomers in /bgg/, presumably?

It's been a while since I read some of their hot takes, hope nothing bad happened.

TQs are way too long anon
>What is the most fun part in the last game you played?
The moment in agricola where you get some breathing room and your engine starts to work. Alternatively, getting a bread engine running early on and shitting out food like no tomorrow in agricola
>What do you find most statisfying in a game?
Fitting in the last piece of a puzzle. I do like dual/triple layered boards that let me make something pleasing to look at. For the more interactive side, planning a turn ahead, calculating your opponents likely choices, then seeing it play out exactly as you simulated.
>Bonus question: what about boardgames annoys you the most?
When games feel like they take too long for their weight. It's not the worst, but it makes some games I actually love very hard to get to the table. Also boxes that are unnecessarily large which is like 80% pf them
>>
>>98516259
Ideally, my kids will also love boardgames and take what they want from the collection and sell the rest for a fair price
But my collection is softcapped at 150 or so, I don't think it'll be the biggest hassle to get rid of it otherwise
>>
>>98516259
if my kids don't like it hopefully the local public libraries will. if those will still exist in the coming 50~ years.
>>
>>98516259
Play them until some kind of world ending event then use them as kindling
>>
>>98516511
If there was no electricity in the world, a board game collection would be very valuable.

Only if survival wasn't an issue.
There's plenty of situations where "extra firewood" is worth way more than entertainment.
Namely:
>Any situation where you're stuck in the heart of a city in winter (or just in a cold location) and have no reliable access to wood (the nearest park is headed off by a seemingly-endless parade of the undead marching off towards that one MF who has been killdozing zombies for days now making a massive racket)
But in general, this is the correct answer for more plausible apocalypses.
Also the joys of getting to lootrun everyone's house and snag all the cool board games that normal looters would ignore.

I tend to like any game where components physically go on a ship and get transported
But it also has sand timers, which bring it down
6/10
>Time n space
What is it with you and space games with sand timers? Are you trolling me?
5.5/10
>>
>>98516720
A fairly simple title, you roll 2 dice, one for movement and one for wall spins. You and up to 3 other players are breaching the maze to claim the treasure. You move, then you move ANY WALL in the entire field with certain restrictions, namely: Walls are physically attached to the board, so they have to be spun in place and cannot be rotated if another wall is blocking them in. After everyone else has gone, the Minotaur gets a turn, moving towards the closest player, then turning walls to shorten the path to said nearest player.
Whomever is the first to reach the middle and then reach a corner wins.
Overall, 6/10, fun game for family/multi-age groups, helps kids with spatial reasoning too, which is nice. Lacks staying power in family settings, but I still like it once in a while.
>You can't turn that wall because it's locked in place by the 2 next to it

Seems like a more indepth version of the labyrinth mechanic, which I liked a lot as a kid. Going to go 7/10 here, as long as you have the right audience for it.

>>98517117
Amun-re is a game I haven't played before, mainly because everyone says it's best at 5, and I already have Ra (along with several other auction games). So while it's not of interest to me, the mechanics do look compelling, and I'll say 7.5/10

>What is the most fun part in the last game you played?
Agent Avenue has really fun conditioning where you can put something impossibly bad face-up and get your opponent to fear that the face-down is somehow worse.
>What do you find most statisfying in a game?
I love when I can find synergy through doubling something. Like if I get 1 gold per turn due to X card effect, and love making a goal of stacking it as high as the game will let me with repeated "get 1 gold" effects.
>Bonus question: what about boardgames annoys you the most?
Kickstarter for non-indies. i'd rather medium or larger publishers just print the game and then I can just buy the game when it's ready.
>>
>>98517223
>Aton
Looks good...shame about the artwork, which is the epitome of boring German artwork of yesteryear. 7/10

>Egizia
Worker placement system seems okay, but I dunno, everything else looks bland and soulless. Ugly art, at least for the latest kickstarter printing
5.5/10

>Imhotep
Are you Egyptian?? This is a lot. As i said earlier, put goods on a physical ship and I'm happy, 7/10

>Tzolk'in
Wish it did something other than the tracks, but gears remain a novel idea all these years later, and are actually integral to bookkeeping/gameplay, so I'll say 7.5/10
>>
>>98517117
>Eternal Decks
Reading heavy at first, cause there's a fair bit of jank to figure out, but the core is very satisfying:
>Cooperatively drafting decks, trying to tell people "i fucking need this" without saying it, and then slowly unraveling the board to fight for your win condition
>Completing a "stage" is often 3+ tries, but reset is fast enough to not be a big issue
Overall, 8/10, fantastic theming, great game.

Somehow I just knew the designer would have a Japanese name. I guess being able to play the game with floss is neat and kind of novel, and the whole idea is probably built around the catchy name, but I can't imagine playing something like this more than once, especially if it's as fiddly as it looks. 3/10

>>98517477
Base game gets old fast, needs expansions to stay alive. The most important part of the game is just looking at the cards and figuring out how you're going to transition into your points, everything else is going through the motions to find out who had the better plan. There's some adaptation, but not much. Still a good design, just not one I'm going to want to play, especially non-digitally. 6/10

Pretty good design, but I feel like it's overrated in execution. Trying to calculate moves into the future is possible, but slow, due to the shifting abilities. Prefer abstracts where I can instantly think past the rules and on my opponent. 6/10

Played Fromage, kinda garbage bullshit. The quadrants are uneven and the player boards are even worse. The deliveries are either just shitting bonus points or fuck you rng. The mechanic of point and spin until shit faces you is one of the best rondelle implementations I've seen (although the center axel was missing) but the game itself is pretty ass.
>>
>>98519104
>The quadrants are uneven
Isn't that the point? You gotta choose to chase down the value in 1 category, often at the detriment of another.
>the player boards are even worse
That one is a pretty wild fucking take and would actually like to hear a rant post about it.
I do appreciate that you can acknowledge something good about it despite hating the game.
>>
>>98519151
the guy who got an animal in building 1 put out all the animals (14 IIRC) and I struggled to get 5.

just by first building I would rate order cards board the highest as having whatever you need is just a bonus. Second animals as you can rush the secondary cheese. Fruit 3rd due to the fact it's a multiplier. Buildings worst as there is a lot for little return and the bonus is fruit vps which by the end I had two fruit for 1 point and it would have taken 5 building to unlock.

I didn't take pictures or analyze beyond that but that's what my basis is. If you can explain how the building board is as good as the recipe board please do, I think I could even live with getting the fruit board if the rest of the rng supported it, but damn I can't see the building board being equivalent to even that.

Ye, 14 animals for max Cheese payout.
Funny enough, the first ever game I played of Fromage was with the Tool Shed board.
I came in 2nd because.. it isn't good. It has leverage options, but can rapidly become sunk cost.
Buildings are something you kinda just want to get early on and then forget about. Tool Shed is a net 0 investment 1st turn you get it (negative if you do nothing with it) and is a slow gain (like all the others), but with the caveat that a passive income of buildings isn't super useful. You're already spending 1 building to unlock it, so after that, it's only 10 buildings to max out, which is a max of 10 turns if you never snag any buildings from center and then it's just sitting there dead on your board providing no value beyond that.
That being said, it can compete by doing big swings on Festival
>Pray you don't get the only bad start, fruit quadrant (you get 0 buildings and will be doing only the basics for 3 turns)
>Grab cows, (1, 3, or more)
>Build Tool Shed, immediately recoup building with a worker
>Build Market next turn (or whenever)
>Festival rolls around
>Cheese, +Cow, Cow Cheese, +Cow, if you have a lot of Cows, Cow Cheese again, suddenly a whole chunk of the Festival is yours
That being said, building draft > default boards (Tool Shed is the weakest, but not explicitly bad)

The biggest difference seems to be that you're dealt an extra card in setup and choose a hand card while sorting your row, instead of being dealt a random hand card after sorting your row.
I feel like that would reduce the variance too much but maybe the extra control over what your row will end up looking like would keep the game from getting same-y.

Some other differences I see are:
2s, 4s, and 6s have stars instead of 3s and 6s.
Putting the pot out early is 3 stars instead of 2.
2nd place in a 3p game with a large straight or a three-of-a-kind is 2vp instead of 1.
A three-of-a-kind is better than a mini-straight.
Two-pair is equal to a mini-straight instead of just being a pair with 3 dead cards.

>>
>>98519057
Been a while since I played it, but if you look 2 or 3 moves ahead, doesn't it depend on what card your opponent plays and puts back into the pool for you to take? It's fuzzy in that sense, belt it leads to a lack of precise sequences, meaning the evaluation is very generalized and potentially slow.
>>

nta but
>Root
Based is kind of ass, there are multiple things that should be at least house ruled (Vagabound infamy and Favor cards) imo there. But overall a fun and varied (with some expectations) asymmetric war/point racer. Not that hard lean or teach as it’s bgg weight would indicate, the difficult parts is to get a good grasp on what you can expect a faction to do on the board the next next turn how how close to victory they are. The only faction I actively avoid having in the draft is vagabond because there is no non-policing incentive to attack him and he has lots of stupid mecanic where many of them break the game in one way or another.

I get why some people don’t like Root, but I’ve found it fun the nearly 30 plays I’ve had of it (most this year), I’ve only have Undergrounds and Marauders (Riverfolk is sold out in my country, getting Homeland when it releases to retailers later this month), landmarks and most of the hirelings packs. I’ve had a group chat with 7 regulars and I’ve been able to host 1-2 Roots games where we are 3-5 players most Sundays in the last few months and it’s been really fun. It gets more interesting when you and the other players have a decent grasp of how the different factions work and play. I wonder what I'm thinking when I have <50 plays as I’ve seen some anon in here say that’s when you reach stale/jaded terrory.

>Spirit Island
I'll do a little review for that later as that is another game played a fair bunch the last few months.

I have no experience in that regard. I do play lot on bga but negotiation/social deduction games seen completely out of place in a digital world. I already found TI on tts with mics to be a harrowing experience.
Point being, if you plan on being autistic, just go full autism and get a solo game or a sp video game. Digital catan against bot seems like the worst possible version of both, but I can't stop you
>>
>>98520862
I played Root once and did not care for it. The presentation was nice but the gameplay did not seem that interesting. I dislike too much asymmetry between the factions. For example birds vs vagabond vs otters seem like so different in how they play and how they interact in the game. Granted I only played once (and twice on the app). The die rolling combat and point system also didn't help.
>>
>>98520723
>Catan
might as well play monopoly or uno.
>>
>>98520705
your opponent has two choices and has to play one. it can devolve into "until he plays B" and you're also choosing which move to give him (ergo you don't give him B if that's the key to him winning). It's more of dumping moves to your opponent that don't help them waiting for the card that you can use to win. It's hard to explain but I find it more boring than chess.

if you find someone who is on the same level, just playing on the surface casually, I can see where it would be fun whacha karate sim but I just can't enjoy it.
>>
>>98521277
>I dislike too much asymmetry between the factions
That's fair. It's one of the main selling points of the game and understandably not something that is going to appeal to everyone.

>birds vs vagabond vs otters
Only one militant factions sounds horrible. People in my group usually likes to play the more militant factions so we have never had a game that with less then two of them. I once had a game with only militant factions (cats, moles, rats & badgers), it was very claustrophobic but surprisal fun and even game still.
I'll repeat again that one of the reasons I dislike vagabond is because he lacks meaningful interaction with many factions in most games I've played with him. Looking forward to getting my hands one Knaves of the Deepwood (replacement faction for vagabond in the new expiations)

> twice on the app
Root is one of the games I could the least image myself playing digitally. For me (and most of my group) a huge part of the game is the table talk and politics.

>The die rolling combat and point system also didn't help
I just sees that as the default of most games that's is kind of similar to Root , it's nothing amazing but gets the job done.

The idea of woodland creatures fighting each other is great, but it's not something I can play with a lot of war gamers due to theme, and it's definitely not something I can play with my mom due to complexity, so very group dependent, but the groups that like it seem to really like it. Gameplay wise, I think I'd rather just fire up a 20 year old rts and play that. 7/10

>>Hansa Teutonica
Great game, sub par theme. Was hoping for the gangster reprint to happen, oh well. Even the most minor move in this game sends out ripples across the board. Maybe the most interactive euro I own, 9/10.

>>Spirit Island
Good theme, but I think a bit to heavy for co-op slop gameplay. 6/10.

>>Ra
Best pure auction game made. 10/10

>>John Company
Kind of a weird game, wasn't expecting the almost roleplaying aspect and dice rolling. Not sure I'll play it again, but as a one off experience it was alright. 7/10

>>Caylus
Back in the day I'm sure this was great, but unlike many other older games we still talk about, I don't think this has aged as well. 6.5/10

>>Ark nova
Pretty sure a LLM designed this game through a series of prompts. 5/10

>>Brass B vs L
Both are great, excellent decision making to rules ratio. B is a 9, L is a 9.5

>>Modern art
Love the multiple types of auctions, although I'm not sure I've ever been in a game where I feel like everyone played well. Pretty opaque strategy. 8.5/10

>>Arcs
I dunno, man. Trick taking isn't my thing, but this spin on it seems good, although how it folds into the game strategy feels a little disconnected. Need to play it more to decide if it's a 5/10 or 8/10.

I don't get how people are so scared by playing a 45 min pax ren game yet don't even blink at a 3h euroslop slog they would lose just as well
Is the thought of your actions having immediate consequences that scary to boardgamers?
>>
>>98532171
There is significant overlap between people who read rule books and people who enjoy Pax games. It is difficult to get people who don't read rule books to play Pax games because teaching the games takes forever.

>>98516794

>>
>>98532171
Euroslop looks simple, its a supply chain, A makes B makes two Cs each makes half a D each worth seven VP, for each step in this chain bonuses can make it better, or let you go down the chain with a big multiplier. And each action is simple, too. So you don't really need much brainpower to play them beyond "2 is more than 1 so i should take the bigger number option" and "i have bonus for the B to C conversion that gves me extra VP for doing it, so i should do B to C conversions more oftrn, so this turn I need to get as much B as I can" and similarly simple decision states.
Pax Ren meanwhile looks complex, the victory condition is nebulous and starts out locked, there's so many one shots, so many ops, aaah what should I do, anon you know i'm not good at games that require thinking!
>>
>>98515637
>>What is the most fun part in the last game you played?
I enjoyed that other people were having fun playing the game I taught them from the sidelines. I don't really seem to enjoy most board games like I used to.
>>What do you find most statisfying in a game?
I like a game that is essentially an infinite resetting puzzle. The board state in Five Tribes. Each new hand in Cribbage. How Chess or Spider Solitaire gives you another puzzle to solve each turn. The perfect game for me is essentially just a resetting puzzle. If it has a social element that's an added bonus.
>>Bonus question: what about boardgames annoys you the most?
Setup. Tedious setup. Rules. I used to love really complicated games. I would obsess over rule books and heavily underline the important rules. I would write notes about them. I'd spend countless hours reading forum posts about how to interpret them. I started to notice that I really was the only person that cared. I would get annoyed that other people didn't care about getting the rules right. Or that they would complain when they got them wrong but wouldn't listen when they were explained. Or they would make up their own rules and insist they were right. Honestly I got really fucking of interacting with people over rules. I found myself enjoying the rules more than playing. In the end, I'd rather just not play a game with people. So I started to appreciate simpler games. I could just sit down and play with other people.
>>
>>98532432
Yeah but you're not supposed to be good during your first games, nobody's asking you to bench 100kg the first time you step in a gym or play at 2000 elo level your first chess game but somehow boardgamers cannot cope with games that don't obfuscate your skill level
>>
>>98527479
I go in spurts, but if you want actual numbers, I set aside $100 a month. That money goes towards anything that isn't essential in my life. That means, video games, board games, or other hobbies I won't list here. There were some years where I was literally buying a board game every month. Or more if they were cheap. On some months I would have a little more or less cash. For example, I might have needed something actually useful that I couldn't normally afford. Or I might have had a tax rebate I wasn't expecting. But on average I only waste about $100/month. I don't smoke, drink, or even eat meat. So that keeps me from feeling retarded about wasting money like that. Also, I've gone years without buying board games. Lately I barely buy any at all. I think Dominion might be the only board game I purchased last year.
>>
>>98532188
Pax Ren is really easy to teach you only have to show the actions and the map everything else is quickly explained as it shows up and makes coherent sense during the first exploratory game.

I think teaching pax games has a bad reputation because most teachers just recite a rulebook rather than actually teach, which can be fine for some games but not pax games.
>>
>>98532471
yeah but most people want to at least play with intent, and in Pax Ren you can get lost in the sauce of buying cards only for the best conditions of their one-shot to be gone and so you buy another card or sell cards to fundraise for more cards but uh oh, there's more cards you want, how do you pick which one is better, how do you choose which objective to unlock with the Comet?
And before they know it someone won and they didn't even feel like they got to play the same game. not much different from when they invited me to play HoI4 and didn't help or explain what was going on and while they were busy ww2ing i was busy just figuring out the interface, and then we desynched and the game crashed. or fighting games, those always have a lot of hidden shit, and It sucks to be the button masher in a group of people who know what they're doing, or at least convincingly pretend to.
>>
>>98532755
You're basically saying that's a game with a skill curve other than having to discover the most efficient way to convert cubes into vps. I agree but also don't understand why people are so scared from having to learn a game and possibly fail badly, I see the same with splotters

Oh that's fairly easy. There are a large number of people who don't play games to be challenged but rather to relax and/or go with their intuition. And I'd assume there's an even larger share of boardgamers with too little time on their hands (as in, everyone with kids). Now, when I play a game and fail miserably, I usually see a challenge that rewards you for powering through it. But I think I'm in the minority here; most would go why the fuck did I spend 2-3 hours on something that made me feel stupid, never gonna do this again I'd rather play 10 games of Trio/Tricktaker xyz/Wingspan etc.
If you're not in to win the game and get no joy out of the journey it's legitimate to avoid this experience. I suppose a lot of anons know that feeling from trying chess or go.

Speaking of pax ren, I keep hearing more and more people praise porf as highly as ren, is there truth to that? I've kind of been avoiding it as the theme does nothing for me

Lmao I went through the tutorial for one of the Hearts of Iron games as well and then I started a game and had no idea what the fuck I was doing. As for the part about fighting games not all them are well suited to ease in newcomers not familiar with the game or even genre. It also doesn't help a large amount of modern fighters being really ill suited or too much of a "long combo" game to help new players get familiar. Like I would not teach someone fighting game fundamentals from any Street Fighter from 4 and onwards. Like I would teach them from old SF2 series and slowly progress from there. Honestly one of the best modern fighting games to learn for any new player is Virtua Fighter 5(you have 3 buttons, Punch, Kick and Guard. Anyone can understand that and just have fun) and some of the Soul Calibur games especially Soul Calibur 2. But don't let the simplicity of Virtua Fighter's controls fool you, it is an incredibly in-depth game. If you want a fundamentals new player focused fighting game, I suggest you download Fantasy Strike and give it a whirl. It's f2p as well but with a paid upgrade for other things.

I think I can explain. I'd say you are right that in terms of sheer rulesload, heavy euros like speakeasy are much harder to pick up than eg. pax ren. Or rather they would be; euros have their own conventions that have grown out of the genre in the decades. Just like how you can pick up nuTricktaker xyz with no problem if you know the fundamentals of tricktaking. If you start from scratch, it's quite the teach despite being considered very light. Remember RftG? Ot was considered a heavy game back when it came out
>>
>>98533440
do you like Kerbal Space Program, but want to replace some (not all) of the engineering autism with support for multiplayer gaming? do you want to plan a route only to then figure out you're out of fuel halfway through, so you need to send a second rocket to refuel your first one while the first one just sits there as an outpost, and the crew just boil in the can for the generations it takes for you to mount a rescue mission? do you like eventually conquering space and building better parts for free already in space, only to ask yourself "how am i gonna get these onto my ship(s)"? then it's worth it. though, ask your LGS if that 160 includes any expansions, because ION's own store sells it for 99 + shipping.

>The problem with VF5 is that the only people left playing it are all psychopaths.
Lol it's not like that but you're also not entirely wrong. I always say not to overthink it too much in VF5 and just have fun, though the irony is that in most fighting games the "default" character on the starting screen is generally well balanced and decent for beginners to learn. EXCEPT in VF5 the default(Akira) is actually one of the more difficult characters to learn in the game. Tekken is also a game with a simple enough control scheme but it is extremely punishing for a beginner to sort of try and learn that game alongside pro players. Despite the modern resurgence of a new golden or silver era of fighting games many of them are absolutely terrible at *teaching* the fundamental concepts of fighting games to a new player. Despite personally growing up and playing a lot of older Marvel games and stuff like KOF, too many of these newer fighting games make things "long combo" and doesn't bridge the gap well between new and veteran players. No new player wants to sit there and do nothing for 20 seconds while their opponent does a long ass combo(or worse an infinite) just because they blocked incorrectly one time, they learn nothing this way.

Not sure how I feel about being able to pick your initial hand card (also the rules say to set it aside, but you're probably going to check it at least once anyway so why not just keep it in your hand?), maybe it makes it more strategic but I'd have to play a few rounds to see.
>>
>>98533572
>Lol it's not like that but you're also not entirely wrong. I always say not to overthink it too much in VF5 and just have fun
You can do that if you're just playing with your friends casually. I would *never* recommend a new player to dive into VF5 online because they're going to get so effortlessly crushed its discouraging. I otherwise agree that VF is very easy to digest given its meat and potatoes design. Its why I think Crossroads will be an excellent game for newbies compared to shit like 2XKO assuming RGG doesn't fuck it all up.
Also Max Dood, shill that he is, has the right idea for what the best fighter for new players is: whichever one is newest and has lots of other new people to play against.
>>
>>98534291
Yeah but you don't have to play online for VF5 to learn the fundamentals of the game(or fighting games in general) and there's plenty of beginners in there as well.
>Also Max Dood, shill that he is has the right idea for what the best fighter for new players is: whichever one is newest and has lots of other new people to play against

Not to learn the fundamentals on VF5 you don't, especially for someone who has never played a fighting game before. They can play through the Arcade mode to learn the fundamentals, because they sure as hell aren't going to learn the fundamentals playing online without learning basic fundamental concepts first. Fundamentals for VF5 is for them to figure out the RPS element(block stops attack but gets beaten by throw which gets interrupted by attack. And in the case of VF being a 3D game they can learn sidesteps, correct high/mid/low strikes and defences) Once they have a basic understanding of their character and buttons with a general gameplay of what they feel works for them then they can go online and try their hand at other players.

I like it. It plays really well at 2-3. 4 players has too much down time. The scheme mechanic is really nice because it gives you flexibility to do stuff right now but restricts your options in later turns. It doesn't have a significant rules overload and you can play well after one play of the game where you learn how some of the more complex mechanics (like Oust) work. It comes with two secret games that you can play with the cards from the base game.

Power Grid (semi-played out)
Rising Sun (shit)
Shogun (boring)
Fury of Dracula (played out)

We will play El Grande if this occurs, but it's not really an event game. Possibly Heat, even though it's better at 6.

>6
Dune
Quartermaster General: WW2 (played out, still pullable though)
TI4
Eclipse
Sidereal Confluence

Yes you can play some of these at different player counts, no I'm not interested in anything except the optimal one.

Also lots of games go unmentioned, especially for the 5 player count, because they are just that much not worth mentioning. Yes, worse than Rising Sun.

Haven't played that or the original Castles of Mad King Ludwig. Not my wheelhouse to begin with, I'm a heavy guy (in more ways than one).

But just looking at the description and how the game looks in action, it looks worse. The amount of different tiles looks much higher, and the castles are all fucked up instead of a 4x4 square. Which means less planning and more luck, i.e., sliding from a tight little game into consoomer tileslop.

usually games are played for fun and competition, not for future reading, if you want esoteric shit ask /x/. personally I don't think tarots work, since every card in either orientation can be applied to anyone in a vague enough way that it'll sound plausible, same with the Zodiac horoscopes, glass crystals, and similar woo.
If you really wanna understand someone, play an actual dueling game against them, and it can be anything from classic abstracts (Chess, Hive, Homeworlds) to more modern shit (Curious Cargo, Furnace Duel, BattleCON) and actually the type of games they prefer and how they like to play (aggressive, defencive, reactive, solitaire focus) will tell you more about them than a shuffled set of cards ever could.

or i might be misinterpreting your question and you just want board games with tarots and/or interpretive work in them, in which case for the tarots some Icehouce piece using abstracts also use tarots and people say they're alright, as for interpretation there's a range from image games (Dixit, Mysterium) to word games (Codenames, So Clover, Decrypto) to even the "communicate without communication" games that let you pretend you've got ESP (The Mind, Take Time) and the weird in-between things i don't remember the names of. dishonorable mention to City of Six Moons, it knows what it did wrong.

that is the wierd thing with this woo , its actually so niche I am not sure if someone else has done it before

That's basically Mysterium, one player silently, through interpretive cards, has to tell each other player their "vision" for who they think is the killer, where, and with what weapon, and then at the end help them all find out which of the "visions" is the true one. It uses cards a-la Dixit but i don't see why you can't have tarots and coffee grounds for it instead.

I played it like a strict economic game, which I'm not normally not very good at, but compared to the idiots I played with I might as well have been Milton fucking Freidman.

The loan mechanic is ass, and needs the tacked on foreign bank module(which the rulebook says is not required, it fucking is) to refuel the economic loop. Trouble is the foreign bank module is also absolute ass with an auction system that only lets you play one side of bank at a time, and any lost bids are an entire action wasted. If you've got a substantial enough lead you can just stall out the auction to make other players miserable, and if you're already struggling for cash, the foreign banks actions just put you more behind if literally anyone at the table contests them.

The way money leaves the economy is also not congruent with how it re-enters, and if players don't know what they're doing they can eliminate themselves from the game. In one game I played, the entire table invested in infrastructure while I rushed sales. Everyone ended up in a debt spiral such that I could buy auctions for like 3 dollars and if they took double money it didn't fucking matter because that sort of income wasn't going to resupply them for the next auction in any meaningful way. In the 4 games I've played, I've seem multiple players eliminate themselves in a game that technically doesn't have elimination.

Container is a game that poses as an elegant trimmed down economic game, but in actuality is just retarded. If you want an minimal and interactive economic game with cool pieces, just play the Estates.

>needs the tacked on foreign bank module(which the rulebook says is not required, it fucking is) to refuel the economic loop
the foreign bank is absolutely not required because older editions of the game didn't have it and were fine. it is specifically made as a replacement of an older optional "passive income" rule.
>the entire table invested in infrastructure

>replaces an older optional rule
Is that rule in the new edition? Because the base economic system is not sufficient to refuel itself without the foreign bank if multiple new players over extend themselves. It's basically just double money that injects cash, and if people reject that for getting their own crates it can push the economy to a crawl.

>nu-euro nonsense
Given a sufficient number of newbies, most of them are going to invest in production or warehousing. It has not nothing to do with playing the game like a euro. If you have the tell the entire table to ignore investing in 1/3 of the action space available to have a good time that's not good game design.

>>
>>98548291
It's been a while but they basically changed what some tokens are used for (a la Kemet 1.5) because they were completely useless in comparison to any other option, they changed the main scoring too iirc, something about cult classic bonuses being terrible or something. I believe everything is documented on a file page on bgg.

>how is the game really?
I found it extremely bland gameplay wise. It's clear they wanted to have wacky anime concepts by mixing tiles together and have people create "anime genre about x with y as twist" and have fun with it but felt the need to tack on an euro game on top of it. You just place your worker to do a simple action, hire cards to get stronger actions, then do the anime so it scores points and then repeat for 3 more rounds with no real sense of resourcefulness or wit, then everybody probably reaches the score cap (because idk why there's one, maybe just because that's how far their little hollow score track goes) and then the game's over.

Rulebook even comes with a "variant" that tells you to treat it like the party game they probably wanted it to be and just ignore everything and just mix funny anime tiles and discuss it like CAH.

Are there any cool mech games? It's such an under represented theme in bg for some reason. The only one I have is Neuroshima Hex with Moloch(I think most of them are robots, but 1 or 2 are mechs?) faction. Also, there are a few mechs in Ascension Tactics.
And no, Scythe is shit.
>>
>>98548757
The ones in familiar with are Embryo Machine, AEGIS, and Giant Killer Robots.
The first is a battle arena game with grid movement and drafted combat decks that represent tour mech's loadout. The second is a lightweight skirmish game where you build a team of robots and combine them into bigger robots. The third, which is the only one I haven't played yet but has been on my list to try, is a strategy game where you control a small squad of mechs that fulfill different roles to support your larger mech in a big combat sport match.
I recommend AEGIS if you like super robot stuff. Embryo Machine didn't do it for me, but the art of the robots is pretty to look at. I'm hoping GKR scratches the tactical combat itch better than EM.

after having played quite a few rounds of arcs, i am not sure if i like it. it has some interesting design decisions, but i think my main gripe with the game is turns taking too long. i don't see how you can play 5 chapters in 2 hours. there often comes a point where everyone will use their prelude to do most of their actions, which requires so much mental upkeep and focus. you need to figure out what you can do in what order to maximize your move set and get the best out of the way you spend your resources. it's exhausting. if there was a way to offload this, the game would benefit greaty from it. it removes a lot of the fun of the game.

What do you guys think of the Arkham horror card game? Is the deck building interesting or are the campaigns too short for it to really matter?
>>
>>98550927
I’ve only played the base campaign and dunwich, which I hear wasn’t even the best one. I would totally play it a lot more but don’t have the time to get into it. I played very vanilla builds, seeker and guardian or whatever it was called. I felt lots of times that I could see how a different class or build would be a lot of fun. I think there’s enough progression within the campaigns that depending on how you build your deck it could change strategy quite a bit. I think there’s plenty to explore. I doubt it’s replayable _forever_ though, but there seemed quite a bit to experience.
>>
>>98550765
When it comes to the classics I still play chess and I don't think it will ever truly get replaced by anything else. When I play go, I really just feel like playing a different area control game. It has been replaced by 4 or so games for me. Not sure why go doesn't have that staying power for me
>>
>>98550927
>What do you guys think of the Arkham horror card game?
One of my favorite games.
>Is the deck building interesting or are the campaigns too short for it to really matter?
In most of the original content, yes. The biggest flaw the game has with its deckbuilding is that every class, of which there are five, all have some load bearing cards that you need to have a really good reason to justify not taking. Other than that though the sheer variety of cards and investigators means that there are several viable archetypes for each class that all do things differently. Nearly all of the replay value of campaigns is going through them with different investigators and decks.
As for the campaigns themselves, 8 scenarios hits a sweet spot for the pacing: you feel like you're getting a lot of meaningful upgrades at the end of each scenario. You don't feel like you're being rushed through, but you also don't feel like you're just slogging through scenario after scenario waiting for some meaningful upgrade.
However, all of that only applies to the now out of print Chapter 1 content. FFG's reboot of the line with Chapter 2 has now gutted the campaigns into two parts, with there now being "small campaigns" of three scenarios, and "full campaigns" with five scenarios. The first of these new short campaigns just came out and while the scenarios themselves are actually solid, it just can't give you nearly enough experience for it to feel satisfying to upgrade your deck. I would imagine the new full campaigns are better in this regard but 5 scenarios is still a significant cut in content. This isn't even getting into all the other problems Chapter 2 has.
All of that is to say that as much as it pains me I would not recommend AHLCG in its current form. If you're interested in the game I'd highly recommend just getting the module for Tabletop Simulator (its not on the workshop so you'd have to go a TTS save trading discord for it.)

is dune imperium uprising similar in that way? according to BGG it is even more heavy. or is it possible for everyone to take their turns faster with less overhead? i think a big problem of why it is like that with arcs is that after each turn the board state and your situation can change so drastically that you have to completely rethink what you were gonna do anyway, which in itself would becompletely fine with me, if each turn did not take so long to pull off.

do any of you guys actually only need 2 hours for one game of arcs?

recommend me some light to medium board games that can be played with 3 to 4 people. rounds shouldn't take much longer than 2 hours.

Had another good gamenight. Nothing like having a month long dry spell to reappreciate the hobby.
>Tfm
It was one of these 'sure why not, lets play it I like tfm' moments I regret in hindsight. Played 4p and with all expansions sans turmoil and damn did that game drag, and that simply is more than is good for the game. I do feel like the first half is always pretty fun, then it gets less and less interesting, especially when it goes to 3:30h. Probably not gonna play 4p again and insist on dumping venus next. Prelude 2 is very cool though.

>The White castle
Amazing game. It did get a little same-y and ever more puzzly after 4-5 games, but I do respect it succeeding in putting 90% of the experience of a heavy euro into a condensed, often sub 1h experience. Also the small box is a delight.
>LotR trick taking thing, two towers
As with the crew, it cements my position that the only coops that actually work are ones that limit communication and access to information. Game looks good, first mission was suprisingly hard to play (we failed like 4 time) then breezed through the next 4 missions. It's a good game, but I have yet to see the innovation that was praised so often; nothing particularly novel or exciting, just a very good game. I suppose it might be brilliant if you're into these genres, I usually dislike both trick taking and coops.
>So clover
Always fun. Never fails to produce absolutly insane successes and spectacular failures.

Also selling Moon Colony Bloodbath; it's fine but it seems to have been designed specifically as an entry into boardgaming and feels rather uninspiring after a few games. Don't exactly know why, the huge number of twists and different engines to build should have kept it fresh for longer, but I have no desire to play it again.

Some anon surely has the .json file lying around somewhere. Steam/member can take down the links to the files, but they are still hosted iirc. All you need is the .json in your library and open it. I sure don't have it though, what has changed? If you are talking about a paid version I have even less of an idea how that'd work and also lmao, paying for games on tts.

A game for the easiest playercount and most common playtime? I think you gotta narrow it down a little
>>
>>98551571
i don't know, the easiest player count for me is two people. i am open to pretty much anything. games i enjoyed so far had been compile, duel for middle earth and magical athlete. middle earth depends a bit too much on a lucky draw, but is otherwise great. magical athlete while entirely luck based works due its complete sillyness.

i do enjoy player interactivity, turns shouldn't take too long (see my problem with arcs here: >>98549895), can be competetive, shouldnt be overly reliant on luck but can have some randomness/luck elements in it. not into euros, tried brass birmingham once and completely bounced off of it.

currently eyeing pandemic and heat. with heat i am not sure if it's good with 3 to 4 people. with pandemic i am wondering wether it's worth waiting for the legacy version to be available and get a consistent 4 player group going.

what about quacks or bomb busters or arkham horror? looking forward to eternal decks, looks interesting, should release in december where i am.

>2 hours for one game of arcs?
The only way this is remotely possible is if people just embrace the chaos and do random shit every turn. If you try to strategise or plan it just turns into thinking and re-thinking everything constantly which is 90% a waste of time.

>dune imperium
Has no similarities with Arcs, just a straightforward deckbuilder / worker placement hybrid. I have no idea who would consider it heavier.
>>
>>98551681
BGG considers dune imperium uprising heavier according to their score. i know that the score is to be taken with a grain of salt anyway. arcs has to be one of the most heavy and dense games i have ever played.

> it just turns into thinking and re-thinking everything constantly which is 90% a waste of time.

yes and it wouldn't be a problem if you could do that on the fly but you can't. the prelude phase, while theoretically or thematically should be short, ends up being way longer than any of the actual action phases. you need the prelude to overcompensate for your lack of agency in your action phase, unless you have the initiative. i do get what people get out of arcs, but for me and my group it's something that just ends up being a complete slog. i said it before, but this game needs something to off load some of the mental work load of the prelude phase. someone from my gaming group, during our last arcs game, said that he can really feel the calories being burned just by thinking about what he's gonna do in his turn.
>>
>>98551709
>BGG considers dune imperium uprising heavier according to their score.
Sure. When I said "who", I meant "what kind of person". I checked the weight scores and it seems fair enough. Base Arcs is about the same weight as Dunc. I would personally put Dunc like 0.3-0.5 lower than Arcs based solely on the fact that it's all standard board game mechanics and the teach is like 5 minutes for anyone who's played a deck builder and a worker placement game.

With regards to the slog aspect, I wouldn't say it necessarily has to translate to weight. Plenty of shit, long games with lack of agency out there that are also light.

It's Blighted Reach that really explodes the rules load and general bloat (I hesitate to say complexity) beyond all reason, and has a 4.5 weight to match.

I always considered "weight" to mean the amount of complexity or options you have on your turn meaning that you need to number crunch/process higher calculations of actions/processes.

Is this basically correct? Or is it rules overhead for how many fiddly rules/how long of a teach it takes?

>>98552135
bgg defines it as such
>>
>>98552135
Weight in my mind is basically anything that makes the game harder to play.

>>98552144
The inclusion of randomness as a consideration here is a bit weird. I guess randomness makes calculations fuzzier and is something that allows looser/broader game design which means you as a player have more to consider?
>>
The thing about weight ratings is you have to consider the audience. Like imagine a lighter 18xx game, but not one that will only attract a beginner audience, those guys will probably rate it a 3.5 or something, whereas for someone whose most complex game is Arnak, they'd rate that 18xx a 5. See it a lot with war games as well
>>
>>98552260
i mean the whole bgg things is pretty vague to begin with, they start with "it means different things for different people". what i get out of it is that it gives you an idea of how complex something is, but that's more like a vibe based thing and in reality does not really translat to any specific sensibiliies.

I've whined about his before, but it's because there are so few decisions to make and most of those decisions have forced choices.

as far as I'm aware there used to be a paid dlc for it but stonemaier withdrew and strikes down anyone trying to put it (or other scythe implementations) up on the workshop. I've tried looking around on discords and they all bend the knee to takedown requests too so this seemed like the only place I might get a lead

>if multiple new players over extend themselves
so tell them "don't over extend"? it's that fucking simple. when three and a half actions take money out of the cycle, and only one brings money in (and even then not always), the rational thing to do is to not overdo it on the three actions. like come on now. how's anyone supposed to auction three crates for 10$ if the whole table has 12$ total cash holdings split five ways?

>Given a sufficient number of newbies, most of them are going to [play the game as if it was a eurogame and not play Container as the designers intended it to be played]
i'm glad you agree, anon.
>If you have the tell the entire table to ignore investing in 1/3 of the action space available to have a good time
no anon, the players need to not OVERinvest. there's a difference here, and if you keep overexaggerating like this you'll never get into the big leagues.

i got filtered by Go, it's too abstract for my brain. At least give me some thematic element, like in Chess, Homeworlds, or GoCaine
>>
>>98552277
Additionally, it is about conventions. A modern heavy euro is very complex, but because we all know how worker placement, resource conversion etc. works we already know like 70% of every game before we even start reading the rules. Wehre games, for example, get called obtuse a lot and I believe it's because he rarely takes his designs the usual, agreed upon way. Not for the better, mind. There's a reason few games do the "take your whole 15 minute turn while everyone waits" instead of chopping it up into smaller pieces etc.
>>
>>98552880
>GoCaine
I looked at that yesterday but I didn't read the rulebook because it was 48 pages.
>>
>>98552487
Very true, but I think the simultaneous turns and quick actions compensate for its shallowness...until they don't. Particularly in the last third where the deck gets stuffed with personal cards and such and does take significant time to go through

starting from page 16 of the rulebook it is only pictures, diagrams, and clarifications, the rest is pretty simple.
on your turn you either
>buy new things and upgrade your infra
>move cocaine around your disks
>sell cocaine from disks at the region price
then, if you can,
>deploy 1 disk anywhere on the map, if you have any ready to be deployed, Go rules apply.
and at any point of the turn you can use a Task Force Interdiction on any region, deleting cocaine from that entire region (including possibly your own) based on how much total is in there.
the map is split into regions, and that matters for cocaine price and movement, since you can move between cells in the same or adjacent regions, even if actual distance between the cells is a lot.

cash is hidden (though trackable, but good luck with that while also playing Go), and game ends when one player has over 1 billion in cash, thinks he has the most, and at the end of their turn announces game end, every other player gets a final turn before the big reveal.

As for the Go rules, it's still basically the same, but with multiple colors, and you ignore map regions for it. If a group of adjacent disks of has no adjacent empty intersections (Liberties), it is captured by whoever's turn it was that the last empty space was taken. In addition, when you capture you optionally get to replace one of the captured disks with one of your own, to further incentivize violence. This works how you'd expect with multiplayer situations, but even if you capture chains of more than one player you still only get one convert max. All the shipments stay on the squares where they were until someone places their disk there and exchanges them for supply shipments of his own color.
15 pages of the rulebook are just clarifications and "this is for the Go newbies" annotated pictures. Pic related, this shit feels straight out of a "beginner Go tactics for dummies" playbook.

Yeah absolutely, and the other anon mentioned the question of audience overlap as well. If you have different contingents playing largely different games with very little overlap, they are likely to view those overlapping games differently in all sorts of ways, weight being one of them.

Still, I'm not one of those people who disregards a rating scale because it's vibe-based. For how vague it is, weight is still a more concrete question than quality, and I wouldn't advocate for moving away from the 10 point system in BGG.

Steam has the thumbs up/down system which is good for the most part (mixed or lower=instant disregard), but I've played more than a few games which are rated Overwhelmingly Positive which really made me question either people in general or the system. Maybe some of those games would've been solid 7 "nice little game, worth 10 bucks" if almost everyone comes away vaguely liking it. But just having a pass/fail grade resulting in 95%+ positive ratings seems to invite a kind of mediocrity that just hits one specific thing.

In any case, my surprise was about randomness in particular. I never thought about it influencing weight, and I'm not sure I still do. It does in an indirect sense by influencing the rest of the design, but then we're talking about the rest of the design and not the fact that your actions come from a random hand of cards or whatever.

That box will be stupidly huge, like the kemet cube
There's no advantage to having all that stuff in one box, just means you have to unpack it every time, and forget about taking it somewhere

That's not why I would pass, though. Clank is a great concept for a game married to lackluster execution of the idea

I did, but two players were first timers so it was a very unbalanced game. That said, one of them played a surprisingly good game and came in second. Funnily enough when I play a 2p game I always lose because I just can't make a strategy that works under time constrain, but with four players there's enough turns to go around for my engine to spool up.
>>

That's awesome. I wonder if I'd feel different about it if I played it as a child too. I "learned" chess as a kid, but only really played chess as an adult. Learned and played some go as an adult.
I like to think of chess and go as archetypal games. Like if the world was destroyed and recreated, we'd come up with games very similar to chess and go again.
