Some progress on my generic cultists.
Tried out the acrylic markers I got recently. Doing the edges with a marker tip was much easier than a brush. I just dropped some Nuln oil on the metal, and a sepia wash on the skulls.
>>98538217How can one be a generic cultist? Don't you have to have fanatical worship for something? Are they fanaticaly generic?
>>98538309Black robes and ritual knives aren't generic enough for you? They can be hired goons for one of my wizards, or NPC opponents, that and "black goes with everything" make them "generic".Ignore the slaanesh symbol on the one guys plank, I was just seeing how the woodgrain detail would fuck with freehanding on it.
>try out a more blue tone metallic & fuck around with yellow placement>accidentally make looted Space WolvesGonna try using an oil wash for the first time and see how it turns out
>>98538620>Gonna try using an oil wash for the first time and see how it turns outBless. Try pinwash first before you just drown the mini in it.
>>98538644Are they difficult to use?I've seen a few videos/guides - some where they drown the mini in it - wait 1 hour & then sponge it off and some where they just pin wash itWas planning to drown/sponge off the armour and pin wash the rest but don't wanna fuck it up
>>98538680no, they are one of the most forgiving techniques you can do, if you don't like the end result just get some mineral spirits and wipe it all off like nothing happenedyou will get some staining if you dont gloss coat it beforehand tho
>>98538680>Are they difficult to use?Not at all, much easier than acrylics. >basecoat>gloss or satin varnish>apply oil washes by the method you preferThat's it. If you dislike anything, you can use white spirit (or similar solvents, like sansodor/turpentine/etc.) to just wipe it awayIf you are very careful with the cleanup (and not using AP paints), you might even skip the varnish, though expect the cleanup to be more difficult and the paints will stain at least a little bit. This can be also used deliberately, as filters. Drowning the mini in it is fine, and it actually makes a lot of sense with say Nurgle stuff, orcs, or grimderp painting styles. But pinwashing is not only very clean, but also quite relaxing technique. It's good to test out both. Just be careful if you are using some premade enamels like Streaking Grime instead of oil paints, they behave a bit differently, though the basics apply. Also, you can use oil paints to shade stuff. Just apply a tiny little dot of undilluted paint (where the shadow or highlight is supposed to be), and then smoosh it around with a dry clean brush. It creates very nice, airbrush-like gradients and transitions.
Okay, I guess now it's just missing some grass. I do have some tufts but I'm not really sure about them, would prefer actual static grass. Anyone have some experience with making their own dispensers with some electric fly trap? I guess the ones available at shop have around 2.5 kV, not sure if that would be enough.
>>98538732>>98538704Ok thanks for the tips AnonsI don't actually own any gloss coat so trying without - I was planning to stain it, wipe away, have the highlight be the current basecoat & then finish with some drybrush highlights

>>98538918when would you use one or the other?
I don't get Miniac, he's always complaining about not finishing armies and projects but still spends hours on every mini doing ridiculously complex schemes with airbrush, oils, technical paints etc that end up looking really average at best. He could get the same results much faster if he ditched the techniques, oils and spirits or at least used oils right.
>>98539115That's fantastic, but what about you take that shittuber cancer elsewhere.
>>98538217A bit more progress.
>>98537972It means I want good strong magnets that are properly sized and not too strong that they mess up miniature formations by attracting or repelling models.I was tired when making that post.>>98538038Thanks!I’ll still appreciate for more magnet links.Doesn’t matter what country if I can find a similarity between them all it can narrow down what things to look for when shopping for good deals from stores in my country’s shops.

>>98539293Usually 80-20 thinner-flow improver is "standard" ratio. I heard of people using reverse (as in - more flow improver than thinner) for primers but I would start with standard first.
>>98539293Thanks anon, but it's basically a normal Baneblade chassis with two main battle cannons. Both are connected to the turret via lots of milliput.
I know it's hard to see but there's actually a tank behind the headless marine. Still hate painting vehicles but the pattern I hated doing less.

>>98539948pretty good on the skin and eyes, especially the face, mold lines and mess on the rest of the model though
>>98540022Because that's the only reasonable reply, anon. There are some basic characteristics to each paint, but ultimately you gotta try them out yourself. It's not just paints, but also specific colors, too. Learning how to use your tools (and mastering them) is imo half of the fun with this hobby.
>>98540022lol just try it yourself
>>98539960yeah there's still an insurmountable amount of work to do. honestly just thrilled to get some base colours down on it. I'll probably brighten up the splotches on the top (where the big ass turret doesn't cover), multiple washes and streaking on the sides, maybe some chips and damage if I'm feeling brave.definitely looking drab and washed out, and doesn't look intentional enough without some saturated stuff for contrast. tyranid body parts in behemoth colours will hopefully help a bit.
>>98539948I think your transitions are good color palette wise, I would just say to improve you should consider working on thinning consistently. I actually paint skin with glazes because I don't like leaving brushstrokes.
>>98540042>It's not a question of where he grips it. It's a simple question of weight ratios. A 20 kilo Terradon can not carry a 50 kilo orb of gold!
>>98538809>thisDesigned to cover evenly>contrast paint Designed to pool>regular paint with low opacityphotoshop multiply layer at 100% opacity vs normal layer at low opacity
>>98540055so if someone asks how ak compares to citadel are you going to say "just try both and see"? there have been examples in recent threads where someone has asked about contrast paint and gotten a reasonable explanation of what it does. I asked a simple question that could be given a simple answer but this dipshit thinks he's being smart with a non answer.
>>98540151thank you for the serious reply. I'm not sure I get the difference in use though. people do the slapchop meme with contrasts, but would even coverage not be desirable over preshading, especially for things like marines where contrast pooling looks like shit? I never hear anyone talk about clear colors for painting warhammers. on the other hand when I look at people doing preshading with tanks and planes I'm fairly sure they are just using ordinary paints.basically I see people using clear colors for things like skin on garage kits or making candy metallics, and I see people using contrast on miniatures, but I don't really know what the venn diagram for usage is even though they seem to have a lot of similarity.
>>98539957>>98538918
>>98540215Brush vs airbrush painting, user tolerance to solvents, what people have available to them and what they're familiar with. Different strokes for different folks. Contrast does dry matter while tamiya clears are very glossy. Plenty of people do horus heresy candy red thousand sons with tamiya clear red fwiw.
>>98540278so if you are painting a marine with zenithal preshading would a clear color work better than contrast?
>>98540309If you're airbrushing I expect it to be slightly better, yeah.
>>98540309Depends on how detailed your preshade is. Contrast gets in the crevices, if your preshade doesn't properly contrast those, your clear color model will look pretty flat.
Some progress. Soon I'm going to regret gluing the fucking head on this one before painting it.
>>98540700It will never cease to amuse me how much a pair of fat tits elevate the sculpts here.
>>98540711back in the 80's and 90's every artist understood that every depiction of a woman could be improved by giving her huge knockers.
>>98539948It's good, you just need to do more glazing between your colors to get smoother transitions.

>>98541606This looks fucking fantastic. Love the camo
>>98541869Thanks. The backpack isn't done just yet, I just have the shading applied on the metal bits so far. But you are right with the lenses not popping enough. I'm fine with how they look now but when I paint the Superior next I'm going to try and make the red pop more. I may even need to go from an orange to a yellow. In hindsight I should have maybe gone with green.>>98541891You can kill the alien, mutant, and heretic from a distance but you miss out on the satisfaction of seeing them die up close. In all seriousness though, I love the nonsensical bits of 40k. Picrel still lives rent free in my head.
>>98541912>I should have maybe gone with greenYeah, I thought about that too. Green is the perfect complement to purple, but it's also a very classic color scheme. An orange/yellow with red highlights around the lenses (like a lava effect) is a good idea and would pop a lot since purple is a cool color.
>>98541970I bit the bullet and went back to redo the lenses. The lava colour scheme definitely helps it pop out more and helps the osl read better. I'm very happy with it. Thank you for pointing it out in your previous post because otherwise I would have just settled for what I had.
>>98542094I think you're better off with a cool color for the lenses. Orange doesn't contrast much with the gold.

>>98544687Yeah, it sucks but I don't own an airbrush.
>>98544820Is that why my minis look sandy? I use brush on primer
>>98544839I don't know. I hardly ever used a brush on primer. I use the Army Painter brand of primer and have struggled to get smooth coats with it. I also varnish all my models after and found it helps smooth out the grainy look.
>>98544852>I use the Army Painter brand of primerIf it's rattle can, just throw it into a garbage bin, easily the worst rattle cans in existence. If it's for airbrush, just thin more, throw it into garbage bin, and get VMS or Vallejo.
>>98545026>easily the worst rattle cans in existenceskill issue, they've been my best experience between citadel, monument hobbies, colourforge and rustoleum
>>98544820you can get smooth coverage from rattlecans, you are either doing it wrong or using a shit product
>>98545026It is a rattle can.>>98545045How do you get the best results? Humidity in my area is a bitch to combat.
I've only used army painter's dragon red spray primer but have never had any grain issues with them or any other brand (white surface primers excepted). Warm the can before use, shake well (but I've never done multiple minutes as some insist on) and don't spray in direct sunlight. Quick light passes. Spray one model at a time held in your hand so you can twist it to get every angle quickly and easily, not the box-full method where you're going to have mist and overspray potentially ruining a batch at a time.It feels extremely straightforward to me but there must be tricks to it given how many people struggle. I've only ever had bad results when I've dropped a model/it's fallen off the handle.

>>98545103I think a big problem is that people spray from too far away. you should be spraying from about 8" away from the part, but I bet a lot of people have their shit on the floor and are standing up while spraying. that or they are afraid of putting it on too heavy and think spraying from further away will make it thinner.

>>98549448if you don't have expensive nippers cut the gate slightly away instead of trying to cut it flush, then carve the remainder off with your knifeuse fine grit sandpaper or the side of your xacto knife to scrape moldlines and gates smooth
>>98548833That's a 40mm base + It's a kitbash, want the STL?
>>98549473Thanks bud! I will get some fine grit paper to sand it down to see if it helps. I will try cutting further away next time!
Got some more work done on these guys. The pro acryl bright ivory seems to go on really thin. I did 3 layers on the cloak and cloth and it's still got a bit of bleed through of the turquoise underneath from when I airbrushed.
>>98549448To add, sometimes you can get very unlucky and have a bubble of air in the spot where the gate connects to the model, but usually if there's a hole it's because you fucked upThe good news is that filling a tiny little bubble hole is the easiest and best practise for filling larger gaps that you could ask for and so you should get used to filling them with your preferred method (CA+baking soda, plastic glue mixed with sprue, modelling putty, whatever)A couple of little 2 inch square pads of high grit sanding paper will last you several lifetimes of cleaning little bits up into nice smooth surfaces, too, and costs like 20p per sheet
>>98549754at my local grocery store you can pick up sanding sticks from the beauty section really cheap. they're low grit because they're designed for finger nails, but for a dollar they're good enough for plastic.
Batched out a bunch of flayed ones for tomorrow's WanG game, which apparently is getting postponed now so I rushed them for nothing. Oh well.
>>98549917To add to this make sure you check their grit.Usually you want to start with lowish grit to even things out and then a high grit of 1k+ to properly smooth it all out.Being nail stuff it might not have the required higher grit for proper smoothing. If you have some 10-15ish bucks to spare you might wanna consider stuff like this
I was nervous about painting black over shaded yellow, but it came out well I think! Now all thats left is the tabard, which I'm going to try a circuit board pattern on
And this is the third time I'm painting this beastmaster, hopefully this scheme works. Trying a noisemarine style of camouflage and stripes
>>98549958the ones i got are about ~300 grit for the fine side. a little low, but after primer and paint i don't think you need a mirror finish with really high grit.
>>98550030Made me smile , nice work anon
Is Morghast Bone just kinda shit? It's coming out so very thin, and can't seem to get any coverage. Also not super sure how much I like the idea of his arm being that bone color with the purple.

>>98550386>Is Morghast Bone just kinda shit?Yes. If you're asking about GW paints that's usually the honest answer. If you want a similar colour with good coverage try Two Thin Coats Sandstone. It's a notch or two darker and a bit glossy for my taste, but covers really well and dries nice and even.

>>98550415I'll have to see if my LGS has Two Thin Coats. It was so thin, but anytime I tried using it without thinning it, it was glumpy as shit.
Finished up my archon conversion. I think half the time was just spent getting the bend and rotation of that right arm correct. Why is it always the case that when posing with blue tack you can get the model just perfect in one try then it takes hours to get it again with actual glue. Of course I also broke off both spikes right at the last minute and had to re-glue them on.Parts list:>Dark Eldar archon (legs, torso, cape, arms, blade)>Corsair pirates pointing hand>Eldar guardian right hand and sword hilt)>Reaver jetbike helmet>Fancy Splinter rifle from raider kit.Just need to figure out what to do with the base now.

I want to vent out my frustration from trying to make DIY static grass applicator. I heard suggestions to use those electric traps for flies but maybe it worked before, certainly not now. Had some very cheap "lamp for flies" but checking actual voltage shows meesy 600V, electric traps have listed 1.5kV instead while typical flock applicator require around 6-8 kV for comfortable work (comfortable as in working from 3-4cm distance instead of almost touching). Checked shops for some HV generators but all I could find were "educational" sets for making arcs but those produce AC, not DC. Everything seems to be optimised for one and one purpose only, at expense of any alternative use (or those traps have reduced voltage now because "safely reasons" read "my dumb kid tried to touch the mesh while device was working").Meanwhile flock applicators from GSW or similar companies all cost 90-100€ or around that.

>>98552895with texture paint just get your most fucked up brush and start putting it on. you don't have to be too careful with it.
>>98552895If the models are glued to the base, I take a clean brush, get it a bit wet, and dab the water around the perimeter of the parts that touch the base, then gently inch the texture paint up to that until the water carries the texture paint up to the edges.

I'm going to buy the Tyranid Ravener kill team soon to go with my exodites and deathwatch sets.I'm building a bunch of jungle themed eldar and ork terrain and going to play 4 player kill team games with my mates. Going to make bases for all the minis in similar jungle style too to make everything immersive.First time painting and buying figures in 14'ish years.I'm just trying to figure out which colour scheme I want the most and I'm torn between three. Mostly two, but really three.1: Zerg Hydralisk colour scheme (brown armour plates, purple armour, fluorescent green venom sacks etc) They're more or less Tyranids Hydralisks (they even dig tunnels and shit in the game). It would be an easy/fast paint job, would look cool and2: 3rd edition codex cover scheme. This is my favourite Tyranid colour scheme. It would be the most difficult and time consuming to paint, but I really like that look a lot. I had a handful of Tyranid units when I was a teenager just to paint them that way.3: Hive fleet Giger. I know it's a cliche doing xenomorph tyranids, but it's just cool. Green stuff over the eyes. I would use a blue'ish tint to the black and make the toxin sacks fluorescent green. It's probably the easiest of the bunch, but it looks cool. I'm leaning more towards something more colourful since the Deathwatch team have black armour. What do you anons think I should do? I actually think the zerg colour scheme would make them stand out the most from the other teams. So all four teams I have are very different.

>>98554095I'm sure it's shit. I saw a video where I guy tried it out and he said even the high pressure was just at the limit of using it for white because of the specs it makes. >>98555964Yes but eventually the cost and time of the paints, not using air brush AND primers will not only match an air brush but surpass it, it's just an obvious purchase.
>>98555964you can make back $180 just in savings from not having to buy rattlecan primer in a few years, so it's basically free and opens up an entire dimension of painting. if you can't see the value there because of an upfront cost less than a battleforce box you're too poor to be spending money on toy soldiers.
>>98555964If you're not completely new to this hobby and have more than 2 boxes of unpainted plastic but no airbrush you're an idiot, simple as.
I'm getting faster at this color scheme. This guy took less time than the lictor. I was going to do something different with the skirt flaps but the paler version of the skin just works.

>>98556790Most of the retarders usually require like 1-2 drop per 10 drops of paint, anon.
>>98556535Thanks, appreciate it!
>>98555964>another 50 citadel colorsan airbrush isn't the first thing you buy. it's something you buy when you want to spend money to make things you're already doing easier.
>>98555964>Etc. I can see why anons rather buy that than an air brushOnly because you are a dumbass. A good airbrush is such a game changer it's not even funny. Then again, you could just NOT buy overpriced Citadel paints, go with AK/AP/Vallejo instead, and the money you'll save in the long run will be enough for respectable airbrush. And this is not even talking about rattlecans.
got my first non-citadel warhammer colour paints and they have a long paper strip on them like some medicine bottle
>>98557485Yes, it's retarded. And also makes rebottling more pain in the ass because you have to fiddle with the label.
