Need to get me some more Battlespace minis, I tell you what.
>>
One fun thing about Battletech is that the setting is at the lower end of sci-fi settings with the nation-states being quite weak compared to most space-faring empires, but the mechs themselves are at the higher end of power level for the real robot genre, there's not a lot of real robot settings that have mechs as powerful as a battlemech.
>>
>>98628957
what's a good loadout for an anti-infantry mech? I'm just getting into homebrewing and I want a mech for killing infantry and elementals
>>
>>98628973
That's pretty much entirely carried by herb insisting that a laser is super duper ultra strong and their armor is invincible to all attacks ever. Any given scifi setting has ceramo-plate and triple folded tritium bullets that far outstrip our capabilities, they just don't argue on forums about how they would take 0 damage if you hit them with a tomahawk.

Also macross sweeps.

Macross sweeps, OYW Gundam actually maths out decently well but anything past clears, anything from Full Metal Panic! with a Lambda Driver wins the matchup, Nadesico isn't even fair, and Dunbine is right out. But powerscaling with those is lame when VOTOMs or Daiguard are right there.

I'm going to say it, battletech ship designs are fucking ugly. Dropships are really the only good looking ones and jumpships are borderline because their design is rather novel, but everything else is the most unappealing combination of space dildos and big ugly bricks

Nah, Macross and Gundam both have the same problem, their mechs are maneuverable, but not durable. They would be defeated by a battlemech for the same reason aerospace fighters are defeated by battlemechs, they're glass cannons that would blow up once the battlemechs land a hit, while the mechs can take salvo after salvo and keep going.
>>
>>98629059
Battletech is magitech bullshit
Every single part of a battlemech is made up of super wunder metal made in space that ignores physics, super electric muscles and a brain-reading device. A labor is made out of entirely conventional materials.

Remember when they had to make lams not work at all in any way and suck and lose and you can't use them anyway because nothing could hit them when played properly? Remember how that happened again in gothic? Battletech can't handle units that can air dodge.

SDF Macross maybe, but past that it's a stomp. A VF can launch too many missiles for a Mech to deal with and from what I remember pinpoint barriers are on more and more of them as time goes on. Gundam has the same story, a Zaku's an underarmed and underarmored Introtech Heavy, but by the time Zeta's over everything can go 7/11/11, soak an AC/20, and send five cERPPCs back.

The classics are machine guns and flamers, but most of the weapons with ammo have special anti-infantry ammo. Most of these chew through regular infantry but do almost nothing to BA.
Inferno ammo for SRMs fucks up everything that isn't a cold mech, including infantry and BA. Plasma rifles fuck up everything full stop.

It was Classic Battletech but playing the simplified rules in the Game of Armored Combat Box. The guy I was playing against it, was his first game too so we kept it pretty simple. Clan invasion era, 4500 BV, but we were both using inner sphere mechs. He brought a Rifleman, a Centurion and an Axman. I brought a BattleMaster, a Catapult, a Locust and a Shadow Hawk. I won, mainly because I got very lucky with critical hits and was able to blow up the engines on multiple mechs.

Pocket warships are a thing and were developed with the return of proper warships, but they're conveniently ignored most of the time. The genie can't go back in the bottle with them, either. Move the goalposts all you want, reflex weaponry alone surpasses any Battletech weapon's destructive capability. Macross is not grounded in the slightest. It's more kin to Five Star Stories, which is literal tech-sorcery.
>>
>>98629382
Not really, we see Battletech lasers doing FAR more damage with far smaller lasers. Sure a reflex laser will blast a hole in a mountain but that's something mounted on a massive combat warship big enough to comfortably fit 50,000 people with room to spare, Battletech does it with a laser mounted on a battlemech.
>>
>>98629397
A Battletech laser can't sweep through multiple kilometers-long battleships and disintegrate them, the SDF Macross can and does. It is orders of magnitude beyond the apex of Star League's tech.
>>
>>98629413
>A Battletech laser can't sweep through multiple kilometers-long battleships and disintegrate them
It absolutely fucking could if you built it on the same scale as the Grand Cannon
>>
>>98629413
>>98629415
Or, to be more accurate, it absolutely could do that to Macross warships. Battletech warships are way more durable and resistant to damage than Macross warships are.
>>
>>98629420
>Battletech warships are way more durable and resistant to damage than Macross warships are.
You lie. The Macross survived uncontrolled reentry through Earth's atmosphere to crash on Macross Island with enough force to reshape the land mass and remain intact enough to be salvaged and brought back to function in 10 years using 20th Century Earth tech. NOTHING in BT can tank that, or even attempt to.
>>
>>98629432
Battletech isn't new to spaceships entering planetary atmosphere and crashing down into the ground, they just do it on a smaller more economical scale. Meanwhile the actual spaceships basically get blown up just by being punctured by a few lasers, everything in Battletech is made of explodium.
>>
>>98629440
>everything in Battletech is made of explodium.
*Macross
>>
>>98629440
>Battletech isn't new to spaceships entering planetary atmosphere and crashing down into the ground
And nothing of them remains to be recovered later. Zor's battleship absorbs damage that a Nightlord couldn't hope to and isn't fundamentally destroyed until kamikazi'd by an even bigger ship when Khyron an heros. BT WarShips are tinkertoys to Zentraedi vessels.
>>
>>98629460
>BT WarShips are tinkertoys to Zentraedi vessels
They're smaller sure, but way more durable.

But here's the thing, nothing about Macross's scale is actually unrealistic. Yes, they have big ships, and they have a lot of ships, but that's to be expected for a galactic civilization with access to cloning technology and asteroid mining. It's actually very weird that Battletech's scale is so small despite having the resources of thousands of planets with god knows how many asteroid rings worth of near infinite materials. Macross's ships themselves are very fragile for their sizes though and their mechs likewise suffer from the same issue.
>>
>>98629467
You keep harping on this rumored durability, but can provide no examples of such to prove your assertion. Mine gets established in episode 1. Your case is on shaky ground.
>>
>>98629481
Watch Macross. Every time a mech is hit with a missile, it explodes. Do the same in battletech and it's gonna be fine the vast majority of the time.
>>
File: 1732136779436747.jpg (111 KB, 640x1483)
111 KB JPG
>>98629483
That seems more a testament to the missile's strength than a condemnation of the mech's weakness, Veritechs have avionics and reaction speeds advanced enough to shoot down missiles with handheld weapons. Zentraedi shit shatters because their tech is a mystery to them and they go hard into swarms. Humanity puts more effort into quality.
>>
>>98629504
>Veritechs have avionics and reaction speeds advanced enough to shoot down missiles with handheld weapons
I mean that's not really unique, Battletech can shoot town ASF's with their arm-mounted weapons and each battlemch is implied to have enough counter-missile weaponry on board to make most modern guided missiles obsolete, hence the need to launch so many at a time.

Also it's hardly the only anime that makes its mechs fragile, it's actually pretty much the default for most anime. In fact, the whole "mechs as stomping land battleships" is something that's more of a western thing, Battletech, Warhammer 40k, etc.
>>
>>98629551
>In fact, the whole "mechs as stomping land battleships" is something that's more of a western thing, Battletech, Warhammer 40k, etc.

Patlabor doesn't do much with movement that we aren't already seeing in those chinese robots with automatic balance and macros managed with a human standing by with a controller. Gundam got it right too. An auto balance system and a complex series of inputs for "do this motion while maintaining your balance and adjusting for obstacles and you can take more manual control but it's harder to manage" is something we're currently doing.

Battletech chose the much more magical "uh it reads your mind but not really except for when they do and it uses your balance to balance something with totally different weight and proportions". It's still good though, they just should've committed to it being a real neural interface rather than half walking it back.

I don't know about that, re-watching movie 1 with the attack on the Ark the labors were moving as adroitly as the smaller power armors we see in Metal Skin Madox, and they were doing it without a mind-machine interface. I think a lot of labor motion is being hard-carried by the OS.

As far as I know the only difference between compact and standard KF drive is that the latter takes less space. WarShips are still limited by the need to recharge their drives after every jump (2 if they have LF batteries), and recharging a drive is done with the solar sail.

By BT standards, Gundam is hella jank, actually. Their neuro-control systems work for less than 50 people, meaning that your average pilot is limited to one weapon at a time, and their peak physical armour system can tank one PPC hit to any facing.

The only positive thing you can say about them is that they solved lasers. Lasers below capital class systems are useless vs their armour solutions.

They probably assembled an equivalent rather than a copy. As in using engines and drive trains they got and target systems and weapons they can get from other sources, to the point where their Hetzers are completely incompatible with Quikscell's.
>>
>>98630199
They can fire way more than one at a time, they just don't have much reason to. Beams work good against most armored targets.

On the other hand battletech has people for some reason continually requesting completely schizophrenic loadouts for mechs of 8 different guns at different ranges and ballistic types and ammo types and then making more and more of variants of them when even the biggest dummy realizes "huh maybe you could just do large laser/medium laser and then a few spare inferno missiles or flak?".

Gundam is a setting where people actually figured out their own meta, and battletech has a dozen variants of every mech that totally suck ass for over a hundred years.

>They can fire way more than one at a time
The standard MS load out is one main gun plus a CC weapon. The minimal battlemech loadout is two guns with different engagement ranges that can independently and rapidly track and engage targets.
BT neuro control systems can be used by any human that isn't literally severely brain damaged and they all get the ability to control and use multiple independent weapon systems in parallel by themselves.

Less than 50 humans in Gundam can do that. Less than 50 humans can interact with the neuro control systems they have developed.

From the BT perspective, the whole MS tech branch is basically like the Japs pumping out nothing but Zeros.
>>
>>98630445
You could go from the OYW to CCA and beyond by just jumping from jim to jim without any major changes because it works and they know it.
>>98630471
Actually it's a bunch of different guns that suck and blow the mech up for no reason and don't even work any good and take a dozen different ammo types. Battletech is full of shitmechs that can't handle standing still and shooting their own firearms at optimal ranges and it doesn't even make any sense why they made them.

It sucks because they're sometimes like "well... they made this mech bad on purpose!" and so? What about the other 70% of the designs with ammo bombs and terminal heat issues and ammo problems? Even a total rube could think to drop a gun and add three heat sinks and unfuck them.
>>

I see. Would using different parts have helped those who infamously copied Quikscell's SRM Carrier from being sued by Quikscell?
>>

Depends on the legal system used, I guess. Some courts will not accept that somebody could have a right to be the sole producer of tracked SRM vehicles.

Ultimately, Quikscell might have to fund some pirate raids to protect their market position.

Yeah, the deal is that the Ingrams' OS is a self-learning system that's able to improve based on input from the pilots and other stimuli from the environment. In the manga version, it's explicitly compared to a baby learning to walk. The reason they're able to move the way they do in the film is because by that point they'd been in use for a year or more and had developed incredibly advanced movement parameters on their own. In fact, what made the final boss, Zero so dangerous was that it was partly created from the Ingrams' data.

One thing about Patlabor that's worth mentioning, though, is that although the computer asist is capable of handling incredibly complex movements for the pilot, the mech's actual body can't keep up with it for extended periods. There's a bit where one is doing a bunch of action movie poses on a test track and Officer Shinohara, who's the son of the owner of the company that makes them, is wincing the entire time because of how it's grinding the hell out of the thing's joints and it will cost huge amounts of money to replace them all just for that stupid stunt. Definitely more maintenance intensive than myomer is supposed to be.
>>
>>98629132
For what it's worth, canonically Zeta-era armor is actually weaker, with a few exceptions, than in the original series because armor that could resist beam weapons wasn't economical to mass produce so it was better just to ditch all but the bare minimum and focus on thrusters.

I'd say it's more basic than that even, and he's just using that one story as an example;
The guy has a problem with Battletech shit being written like it's not actually sci-fi, and authors not writing the people in it that fit outside their own limited experience.
It's a fairly common failing across time though not limited to Battletech for sure and creeps into pretty much all big fantasy/sci-fi things. Fantasy stuff is fucking atrocious for it. Authors are often just, well, shit and don't know how to write anyone that isn't themselves or the people around them.

As a point one of the more successful parts of Battletech for its keeping to its nature is that because the Clans have an inherent style guide that everyone must follow when writing them, as cliche and occasionally stupid as it gets, that's kept that part from falling into the same trap, mostly (there's always gonna be exceptions with so fucking much pumped out).

Ultimately I think the poster's points could be answered by tightening up the overall style guide a bit, so that editors will look at such stories and go "Does this read like a character appropriate to their environment?" Frontier Battletech people for instance, should probably be looking at historical sources or at least some gritty westerns even though that's just piling fiction on fiction, to give a sense of what they're up to with the hardness and brutality of frontier living that comes with the mundane of even if you do have a few fusion engines and laser pistols on hand.

By the time you reach the "Westwards expansion"-difficulty tier of colonization, you have already established a solid foot hold on-planet for a couple centuries, you have a stable government and are an integral part of an interstellar trade network.

You're only frontier in the sense that you will never be a golden world.

Actual initial colonization's more like being dropped on the Eurasian steppe with nothing but an axe and the clothes on your back. While also being allergic to fish, berries and milk, mind.

A week later and I'm finally home.

Marc cracked the stim tab with his teeth and let it turn into chalky, bitter fizz on his tongue. He'd had two for breakfast and there was no time to wait on his digestive system to burn through a third.

Things were going FAST.

It had been a fast month. Watching his brother get slagged had only taken the blink of an eye. The Ultra AC/20 double tapped him. That was it.

Getting the hell out of dodge was fast too. Everyone talked fast. Everyone wanted money fast. He wanted to get away fast.

Now here he was again.

Same jump route.

Same place.

Same Jaguars pacing in the mist.

Everyone else had laughed when he told them. Marc told himself he had told them. They even jeered him and his ragtag outlaw friends getting ripped apart.

'
The only jaguars the Magistocracy had to offer came with a collar and a bell.
'

Even with two extra 'Mechs and a hundred more tons of drop weight things had gone the same as last time. They didn't listen. They walked into it. The first few of them over the hill had gotten armor ripped off by the ton and the rest were milling around with their sensors jammed.

That same clumsy bitch in her Omnimech stumbled up to Kat and turned her Hunchback into steel mulch. She was the only one of these lot he had liked. The tree she had ripped up was still clenched in what was left of a hand.

So much for bashing in the cockpit of the first Clanner to show their ugly faces.

'This is it, big man.'

There was a snarl. Nobody but death was listening anyway.

The jumpjets slammed. The cockpit rattled and loose buttons jumped around in their housing. Marc had never been much for fancy maneuvers and his Brigand was never meant to take these kinds of g forces.

It was fast trip.

A hundred meters up.

One twenty.

Maybe he needed to save some juice for the landing.

One sixty.

It looked ridiculous from up here. Lasers arced in the mist. They were leading him right where he wanted to go.

One thing that's always made BattleTech feel realistic compared to other military scifi is that it's one of the few that acknowledges just how much that weapons, and often the wars they're made to fight in, are first and foremost a revenue stream.
>>
>>98633519
You don't see them in battletech either cause battlemechs aren't lumbering and can't take a million hits. Building mechs for pure defense is crap because you'll just suffer crits and headshots anyway. This is why everyone makes jumpmechs now. Not getting hit is the better defense and now the average "competitive battletech" game is just armored core.
>>
>>98634360
>cause battlemechs aren't lumbering and can't take a million hits
I was exaggerating for effect but battlemechs absolutely are super durable compared to...well just about every other vehicle in battlech and mechs in anime. And yes, battlemechs are still very fast compared to most land vehicles in Battletech but they're still kinda slow and lack maneuverability compared to a lot of mechs in the genre.
>>

That's right. He even says there are worse examples he won't get into (probably stuff he would be instabanned for mentioning).
>[authors]don't know how to write anyone that isn't themselves or the people around them
Some authors think superficial attributions of characteristics (sex, race, class, etc) is enough. In this story, the main guy is some kind of Hispanic. But does he think like a Hispanic person would? Hard to say what being Hispanic means millions of lightyears away from earth and over 1000 years from now. That's why it is so important to work on the characters at a deeper level.
What we are getting more and more, by contrast, is writers satisfied to substitute diversity for dimension. Although I doubt they really know they're making that trade.
>because the Clans have an inherent style guide
This also makes Clanners more resilient against writers' present-day assumptions but even the Clanners are starting to come off more like woke scolds under certain pens.
>Frontier Battletech people for instance, should probably be looking at historical sources or at least some gritty westerns
That's right. And it's obviously not for the sake of merely depicting rough circumstances. A writer should evaluate those sources to get a better notion of what frontier characters think like, even unconsciously (which persists even when material conditions improve).
>>98631207
>You're only frontier in the sense that you will never be a golden world.

I tried out aerospace battlefield support and it's not bad but still leaves you wanting more. Definitely better than those garden variety airstrike cards that came with Mercenaries though. I like that an aerospace unit making a ground attack occupies a physical space on the map and thus has actual range bands and firing arcs to deliver and receive attacks. I wish that escort and units that are intercepting said attackers also had a physical presence on the map too. Interceptor vs Interceptor I'm fine with leaving off the field though.

Also the default skill levels provided on the cards in the aerospace playtest made hitting targets way too easy but apparently they've already addressed this and are nerfing aerospace skills by a level for whenever the full aerospace cards come out.

TACs are just a cheap adhoc attempt to make the game resemble the fights in the books and it's just more silly random game nonsense so people can clap when their atlas blowed up on the third turn. A shadow hawk can be reliably capable of blowing up mechs with just a few hits, which it canonically does, with its fearsome ac/5, which is respected as a viable weapon and not a popgun.

Otherwise every introtech book duel would be "they walked around slowly trading blows for like five fucking minutes, holy shit these guns do nothing, why did anyone make a gun that does single digit damage and install it as a primary damage dealer? why does the shadow hawk do an average of like seven damage (it misses a lot(which is very weird if they're supposed to be "ponderous")) it literally can't kill anything oh my fucking god grayson just get a different mech"

Or the game is just abstract (lower canon than the books, explicitly gamified with a warning at the start that it is).

>>
>>98634761
Interesting hypothesis. I'm sure you have a table of how often TACs appear in BT fiction, and their shift in usage over time to back it up?
>>
>>98634763
Arrays kind of suck and don't help against infantry. What they do is make it so all your machine guns fire as a single weapon, then you roll cluster to see how many of them hit, then they all hit the same location. Against infantry, that just adds a step where they can all whiff together with no benefit when they do hit.
>>
>>98634761
Bullshit. If you're going to say that TAC's are abstracted then you might as well say that tanks or ASF's are actually the dominant force on the battlefield because the thing that makes them not as viable as mechs in the tabletop is mechanics, and yet we know that's a croc of shit.
>>
>>98634807
>tanks or ASF's are actually the dominant force on the battlefield
They are. Mechs are propaganda weapons, but they're totally ineffectual and unrealistic, and it's only shitty game rules that let them be effective at all.
>>
>>98634807
Funnily enough, by mechanics ASFs used to blow 'Mechs out of the water, which is why the lawndart checks were added. Conversely, tanks used to be weaker, but endless complaints from fans that were tankers on the OF led to them get buffed to the point where some were arguably better than 'Mechs (fewer armor facings, turrets, and the ability to go hull-down are all very powerful), which led to counter-buffing in turn.

I wonder if other things are allowed to be strong now that Herb is no longer in charge. I'm excited for the Ravens' WarShips.

Yes but that's the point, the authors are very clearly creating a setting where mechs are these powerful, dominant, strong weapons of war that can take a lot of hits and keep going.

I mean, FFS, the Mackie's first two trials had it literally untouched by the enemy despite being outnumbered in both cases. That's not something that's fragile.
>>

if I rip out the machine guns should i replace them with AP Gauss or micro-pulse lasers?
>>
>>98634893
>You're trolling
nta but if we're going by mechanics>fluff then we should acknowledge that ASF objectively dominated the game so hard that lawndart rules were implemented purely in response to that. You can't have it both ways anon.
Besides, you can still argue that the only reason ASF aren't the main form of warfare is because they're way harder to salvage and replace.
>>
>>98634893
>I mean, FFS, the Mackie's first two trials had it literally untouched by the enemy despite being outnumbered in both cases. That's not something that's fragile.

Didn't the Mackie have cutting-edge (i.e. "modern") armor and weapons, too? Or was that a retcon?
>>
>>98634907
>then we should acknowledge that ASF objectively dominated the game so hard that lawndart rules were implemented purely in response to that.

The lawndart rules were a solution to a problem that didn't exist. So few games used ASFs for ground support, and when they did it was usually the kind of serious player that wouldn't be an optimizing asshole.
>>
>>98634930
The fact that ASF's were capable of being used like that at all was an obvious loophole since they're not supposed to be that good. There's a clear difference between "This vehicle isn't a match for battlemechs in the lore so it doesn't get used much" and "Please don't use this vehicle too much or it'll ruin the mech power fantasy"
>>
>>98634930

>>98634963
Nah, the actual problem is that the "canon units only" rule also applies to ammo swaps.
>>
>>98634963
The actual upshot of all of this is that anyone who wants to use any unit type other than Mechs in a game is someone you should expunge from the fan base.
>>
>>98634772
TACs don't exist. Your shots don't randomly phase through armor.

>>98634807
The game rules are just sucky and don't get playtested especially rules for anything but mechs. 50-50 random crapshoot if it's total unplayable garbage or the most powerful unit in the game.

Any time you wonder if the game is accurate or simulates the world properly or has any sense of reasonable balance or playtesting, just remember the shadow hawk is supposed to be an effective, reliable mech with a good reputation.

>God is this true

Mostly true, though it depends on what you mean by "playtesting". Generally speaking, until *VERY* recently, "playtesting" meant something along the lines of, "play a game or 2; did the rules do what you wanted them to do? If so, have we fixed most (not all) of the typos? Great, print it." Stress testing to "see what breaks the game" isn't how the job ever gets done. Turns out, live playtesting is expensive and takes a lot of time and tabletop game companies don't usually have a lot of money or time. They usually write something that looks about right, hand it to someone to see if it works the way they hoped if played according to the designer's intent, correct some (not all) typos, and publish that shit.

I hate to break it to you anon, but no TTRPG game company ever has or ever will do playtesting to the degree that you think it should be done, when you use computer programming/ game studios as your example. TSR didn't do it. WOTC doesn't do it. GW doesn't do it. And CGL doesn't do it. The degree to which Xotl ran the playtest last year for the new core rules is by a *WIDE* margin the most in-depth and wide-ranging playtest that BattleTech has *ever* experienced.

And that's a good thing. Death to compfags.

She was there to run it into the ground and that's exactly what she did. Whether the Blumes Brothers explicitly asked her to do so or they just gave her all their shares before the embezzlement case got going is a question we're unlikely ever to get a straight answer to.
Certainly her antipathy for the entire nerd and geek subculture was incredibly well documented, and she only took the job of CFO at TSR initially because the money was good, which, if her family hadn't mismanaged the Buck Rogers license, she probably wouldn't have needed.
Certainly it is known that the Blumes Brothers embezzeled millions of dollars from TSR whilst Gary Gygax was away in Hollywood trying to get a D&D film optioned. Spending it on fast cars, cheap apartments and at one point the raising of an 18th century Tea Clipper from the Atlantic. We know that they abused their position to promote friends, or create cushy well paying jobs with no actual work for them. What we don't know is if the idea to have Gygax trundle off to Hollywood was their idea to get him out of the way or not.
We do know they weren't prepared for him to come back and catch one of them red handed, with his hand practically in the till.
But we do know that whilst he could start criminal proceedings against one, he couldn't pin enough on the other to stop him from receiving all said brothers shares and then turning around and giving them to Lorraine, making her the majority shareholder in TSR.

Sure, but things should still tend towards internal balance. Unbalanced shit means either you're playing to lose or you have to forgo equipment at a certain point. Best example is the TSEMP Cannon which has the same weight and over twice the crit space of a CLPL while costing 200 BV more. There's literally zero benefit to taking it.

Also in general I believe compfags like unbalanced games because it gives them more shit to abuse. If compfags cared about balance they'd play games with 3 well-balanced factions or just play chess, not play 40k with whatever broken army/unit/strategem is currently the most busted. Compfags love the idea of getting to take IJJ CLPL boats while their opponents play with unoptimized units that they find fun or cool.

On the topic of fun and compfags I wanna make a dogshit assault/heavy striker/scout lance and was wondering what to include. Obviously Charger 1A1 is in and I might say Banshee fits well enough as the main weapons platform of my lance, but was hoping for more 5/6 walk speed mechs, ideally introtech.

>>
>>98636000
Nah, you can see clearly different tones of mech design and usage in Western vs Eastern mech media. In Western media mechs tend to be portrayed as slower (see mech warrior's portrayal even if it isn't lore accurate) and harder to kill (even in the lore mechs take a good number of hits to kill meanwhile in anime mechs tend to die from one sword strike or one volley of gunfire), furthermore non-mechs are portrayed as actual effective if not top of the line combat units in Western media while in Eastern media tanks and artillery are just targets for mechs to destroy.

Does that work with new DLCs? I admit I hadn't tried that. Part of the appeal is always the climb up from the bottom at the start of a career. But I also thought that save files weren't compatible with newer DLC. Like if you bought the new DLC and wanted to use it, that you'd have to start a new career/campaign and that's what all those icons for all the DLCs were for. I also admit I kind of just came up with that idea on my own and not sure from where. So if I can take my DLC8 file and convert it to a DLC9 file, I think I'd be okay with that for once. Legends of the Kestrel Lancers is great and all, but I'm kind of sick of playing it at this point. Especially when I haven't even gotten around to the Shadows of Kerensky and Chaos Marches campaigns yet.

What do you mean work with DLCs? Once you buy them they're added to your game world and will always appear once you reach the appropriate time. There is no versioning to your save file. Every time you choose to start a new career it will ask if you want to import an existing company or start from scratch.

Building your company up from the 3015 start is nice and all but it will never match the narrative, and they don't care to accommodate because the alternative is that there's a Leopard flying around with the most prestigious merc *lance* in the entire Sphere and nobody has ever mentioned them anywhere else. Mason will always be wowed by the Sunder prototypes and always complain about his rag tag company somehow being still staffed by half-baked washouts and goofy IS rustbuckets even though it's been 42 years, despite the actual player running around with 12 fully upgraded Clan mechs and plenty extra being towed behind the Leopard.

Just play the latest DLCs in order instead of putting them off. Their curated starts are balanced to give sufficient challenge and threaten you with a lot of attrition over the DLC's campaign. Chaos Reign is a bit overtuned against the player but it is still doable. Same thing with the upcoming one. Then once you've beaten them "legit" the way PIG intended you import your save to wherever you want to continue from, but I doubt you will actually improve your company much. Ashes and Ascension is adding a lot of Clan battlemechs and IS post-Invasion weapons but are you seriously going to replace your 8 kitted out Mad Cats with those? Didn't think so. But that is why the curated fresh DLC career start exists.

Fun fact: the Charger actually does do the highest amount of charge damage possible in the game. Charge damage scales with engine size (because it goes by both speed and weight), and the Charger gets a bonus from the rounding up that turns 5 walking speed into 8 running speed.

(Using advanced rules, the highest charge damage is a theoretical 165 tonner that goes 3/5, for a 495-rated engine.)

1, he is noted as having an older son close to graduating
2, mechs get fucking hot, if you do not have a cooling vest the buildup can kill you (Star Lord, page 129 "you've got both PPC's online. We'll fry in this cockpit. This old 'Hammer can't vent heat like the ones your used to piloting", for context Trane and Duncan are in the cockpit of a commandered Warhammer without cooling vests). The MechWarrior is putting his daughter in a situation that could see her killed if he just happens to do target practice. Further his wife should know this, she is supposedly a veteran.
3, why is daddy taking his daughter to work when his wife, the mother, is doing nothing. She's enjoying poetry, she should be watching the child. I'm going to use a real life example.
I have a friend whom is a cleaner. Her husband is a have mechanic. If one of their children is off ill and neither is or can get off work she takes the child with her. Why? Because her job is relatively safe whereas her husbands job is dangerous. Same thing here, she's doing something peaceful and safe whereas he is doing something dangerous. Hell, what if he trips his mech and falls? Locusts do not have a rumble seat, so she's going to fall. The vibrations from the mech moving are going to mess her up if she slips off of his lap, where she is blocking him from piloting properly, and if he pushes his machine or uses the laser she's going to be at risk of heatstroke. Nome of it makes sense.

Also I see you there manic, glad to see it's not just your father and grandfather who were fuckups.

The cooling vest thing is retarded, though, you're right. But he probably didn't imagine he'd see combat, or if he did, he'd have time to drop her off first.

Actually, he should have known that there was an enemy ship in-system. The Clans didn't use pirate points in the Invasion, so he would have had days of warning unless the planetary government was keeping it secret for some reason.

In general though I like the Excalibur more, its weapons all keep the same range bracket, it's fairly mobile, and those two partially make up for its long range. Well again each functions rather differently.

Black Knight is essentially a tanky energy boat that usually puts in a good showing. I think it drops off in capabilities as newer mechs end up performing a similar niche but up till 3060s you can't go wrong with one. XL engine versions I feel defeat the purpose of the design and you might as well just get a Flashman at that stage.

Grim Reaper I am not a fan of but its more a case I just don't like it rather than it being any bad. Its basically just a Griffin without jump jets. XL makes it a bit fragile but it can easily lay the hurt on at range. Its not something to say no to if offered one.

Shootist is a bit underrated. It doesn't do anything exciting but you don't need it to do anything exciting. Its a big slab of metal that can tank hits and clobber anyone that comes close. If you are not running C3i the later variants are a bit of a waste though.

Spartan is the most situational of the bunch arguably best for a campaign style play. You bring it because your TAG units keep getting destroyed before the Arrow IV lands or you need something that makes scout mech pilots crap their pants. Against most other units you have better options available but it certainly will keep people on their toes.

Excalibur well its isn't the toughest thing around but its damn fast for its weight and its a skirmisher that's got the ability to make a hole and exploit them which is going to keep causing problems the longer its ignored. Its an excellent choice to have around in a 1vs1 or as fire support for a lance.

The problem with "ein reich, ein volk" is that it sounds great until you look at it from the reverse side. It's not just the ethnic homogeneity, it's that by extension you as a member of it's claimed demographic have no right to exist outside of its jurisdiction. The right to fuck off and go live somewhere else is foundational to a stable society, because by staying you are therefore choosing to be a part of it and be invested in it. Being compelled to stay in a system that is unsuitable for you breeds resentment that leads to uprisings and all manner of civil chaos.
(Note that no other state has an obligation to take you in if you decide to fuck off, but you're likely to find something that's suitable enough to your tastes that's willing to.)

Why give 'Mechs to ANYONE not loyal?

We know they've got medical tech that would make the Canopians cry. They're far and away the least impacted by events. The Terran Alliance falling apart didn't affect them because it ignored them and they ignored it, the Terran Hegemony got them to agree to pretend they were subjects of it, but otherwise left them alone. Amaris tried to tyranize them but they just retreated further into their asteroid fields and supported the SLDF when it came back. Comstar got them to agree to not export high tech stuff outside of the Terra system, but otherwise left them alone. WoBstar didn't change anything about the arrangement. The RotS convinced them to participate in its navy but otherwise left them alone. Woof blew up the naval academy full of the Belters best and brightest, then demanded they fully submit to a thorough yiffing, which hasn't yielded many results aside from clan patrols going missing.
>>
>>98638555
Technological growth is sporadic if not outright random. That's not to say that the periphery should be the equals or periphery of the Star League in all areas, but the fact that say Nueva Castile which existed since before 2400 has invented literally nothing whatsoever of note in almost 700 years is stupid. The states of the periphery have no intrinsic reason to be backwaters. What prevented Nueva Castile, the Jarnfolk, the New Delphi Compact, the Samoyedic Colonies, the Umayyad Caliphate, the Hanseatic League, or the Axumite Providence from developing technology over centuries of relative isolation?

Why did humans explore from Terra to Nueva Castile (with enough colonies to form multi-planet nations in Nueva Castile) in under 300 years, but over the following 750 years the furthest expansion of humanity was the Star League Exile fleet and barring that the biggest colonization effort has been the Fronc Reaches? You figure one of these periphery realms living in relative or absolute peace for centuries would launch some colonization projects of their own or maybe develop some new weapons or technologies or literally anything.
>>
>>98638657
Huh. Why DID colonization stop?
If the ilKhan can restart that. I'll be impressed.
>>
>>98638657
I agree. Only thing I can think of is inability to produce new KF drives or something.
>>
>>98638668
Because the TA declared everything more than two jumps away from Terra is independent now and then withdrew all of its ships and told everyone they'd be shot upon entry.
So the colonies were busy dying, reestablishing trade lanes, forming new space nations, and then recolonizing dead worlds before running headlong into each other and starting wars. Why push out when there's so much space to backfill? Why push out when you've got those fuckers over there on at least three different sides of you that need nuking?
>>
>>98638673
Which is flawed, as we see them craft new Jumpships by the dozen, per nation, per year.
>>
>>98638673
Most places can't make KF drives. It takes either a full blown orbital shipyard or a massive mobile shipyard. And transporting intact KF cores is a headache and a half that takes twice as long as transporting anything else because a KF core inside the field of another cores jump field is a guarantee event horizon type situation.
>>
>>98638682
>Why push out when there's so much space to backfill?
What space did the deep periphery fail to backfill? What about the Taurian Concordat? Using the primary example I gave Nueva Castile was never under the Terran Alliance nor dependent on it in any sense and had nothing to backfill.
>>
>>98638696
And no new places could ever develop building KF drives? That's like imagining that if all of the world suddenly cut off from each other that countries that don't currently manufacture jet engines couldn't manufacture them even after centuries of isolation.
>>
>>98638720
How many of those places have teams of PHD level theoretical astrophysicists? Even the IS struggled with making KF drives from first principles. For a lot of the succession wars, the only drives being made were exact copies of already existing designs, because none of them had the resources to design new ones without the risk of misjumps.
>>
>>98638710
The deep periphery doesn't have the benefit of centuries of accumulated terraforming. Many planets in the inner sphere are the result of decades or centuries of slow terraforming processes that required a ton of resources and patience. Does Nuevo Castille need to turn a hot, sulphuric ball into a livable world? Do they need to dump greenhouse gasses onto some frozen hellscape so that it becomes slightly less frozen? Do they have such a large excess of population that they want to shove off world for political brownie points or so they don't need to see them ever again?
>>
>>98638736
Probably at least a handful, and every colony has a jump drive and people who operate it which provides some basis of understanding to recreate or improve over centuries. The issue isn't the technology, the issue is the number of worlds/civilizations and the sheer timescale. Earth went from modern technology to KF Drives in a century, but somehow Nueva Castile/Hanseatic region, Finnish colonies, Axumite Providence, Jarnfolk, and New Delphi Compact couldn't recreate the technology over the course of over half a millennium with a far larger combined population base, and working drives to study? If you suddenly killed off every single nuclear engineer on earth and destroyed all hard data on reactor designs not critical to the operation of them humanity could start building new reactors before 2500.
>>
Why hasn't anyone come up with a new method of FTL?
>>
>>98638785
Because no fundamentally new technologies can ever be developed after the fall of the star league. It's a cosmic law.
>>
>>98638770
Humans on earth can dig up new radioactive sources. Some two world deep space nation can't just conjure up a new jump core if they break the extremely specifically made one they have. Even if they know what it's made of, do they know the precise mix? Can they even purify the elements enough? Can they figure out the geometry without breaking it? If they fuck it up, they're completely cooked.
The Coreward Confederacy couldn't keep their jumpships running and ended up as a collection of isolated planets that used to be in a space nation. They can see the light from each others stars and that's about it for their ability to communicate.
>>
>>98638770
>every colony has a jump drive and people who operate it
Lot of assumptions in that, because a breakdown or destruction/capture by naughty neighbors who also have those things might leave said colony floating in the breeze, surviving on only what their world can provide.

They can do this amazing thing called research, and studying, and experimentation. Also the people who operate it likely need to know the basic principles of operation. A nuclear plant's operator might not be able to build a plant from scratch, but have them studying and researching, and teaching younger generations and I have no doubt whatsoever that if you killed off every nuclear scientist on earth and destroyed all design documents not necessary for plants to function then you'd still have new reactor designs in a generation or 20.

How did ComStar even win at Tukayyid?

Conventional experience shows it takes 3 Inner Sphere mech regiments to beat 1 Clan cluster. The Clans brought 88 or so clusters to Tukayyid, and Com Guards only brought 50 mech regiments.

It should have taken a Com Guard army 5x its size to win.
>>
>>98638872
>And people on colonies can dig up germanium. You're talking about resources, not knowledge or technology.
They have to smelt it absolutely perfectly, in a zero gravity environment. It has to be completely pure, all the way through. It has to be exactly the correct shape. If anything is incorrect, it's being sent halfway back to Terra and the crew will be rendered into a molecular paste. How many times can you build a 3 meter wide, absolutely pure semi-sphere (precisely correct in its semi-sphericalness) made of materials that most technology can only render as a dirty byproduct of mining other materials? How many times can you build a massive hull with huge, precisely calibrated capacitor banks? How many people can you get to volunteer on a suicide run? How many generations of scientists can your society support doing nothing except designing new suicide machines that each individually cost a serious fraction of your GDP?

>They have to smelt it absolutely perfectly, in a zero gravity environment. It has to be completely pure, all the way through. It has to be exactly the correct shape.
Barring the zero gravity all of that is true to refine fuel for a nuclear bomb.

Plenty of times probably. Also tons of people died in the process of developing and mastering nuclear fission, didn't stop anyone from doing it. Also if it's so impossible how was it invented in the first place with no prior knowledge of how to build it and nobody who had experience working with KF drives?

>How many times can you build a massive hull with huge, precisely calibrated capacitor banks?

>How many people can you get to volunteer on a suicide run?
Scientists in the Manhattan project were killing themselves for fun practically, SL-1 involved a guy willingly impaling himself to a roof with a control rod, Christopher Columbus got three whole ships of people to cross the Atlantic when nobody (himself included) believed America existed and the estimates for the earth's circumference were such that Columbus would have run out of supplies somewhere in Mexico if there wasn't a ton of unknown land in the way. Life is cheap, especially in the face of fame or riches.

>How many generations of scientists can your society support doing nothing except designing new suicide machines that each individually cost a serious fraction of your GDP?
How many generations of scientists did it cost Terra in the first place? Also that's most scientists honestly. How useful is the LHC in collectively advancing humanity? The ISS? The Hubble Space Telescope?

It was built by a unified earth government with access to multiple PhD level theoretical astrophysics programs and not a colony living out of prefabs hooked up to a dropship engine that they didn't build.

Whoops forgot this. Constantly? We can do that with 21st century technology. A Gerald Ford class carrier is over twice the weight of an explorer jump ship.

>It was built by a unified earth government with access to multiple PhD level theoretical astrophysics programs and not a colony living out of prefabs hooked up to a dropship engine that they didn't build.
Again they have centuries to develop multiple PhD level theoretical astrophysics programs. You don't think that if you got a few thousand people including specialists able to operate a KF drive and dropped them on a planet with no further outside interference (which isn't true because most of the deep periphery still has distant trade ties to the IS) that over three quarters of a millennium that they would be able to reproduce it? For reference 750 years ago Europeans were just learning about gunpowder and sailing across the Atlantic with no stops was essentially impossible.

>while their opponents play with unoptimised units they find fun or cool

Literally me. I have a Merc company filled with shitty mechs I picked because they are shit or I think look cool. Most people in my LGS are clanners who love their jumping pulse boats. Constantly get stomped but I don't care, still have fun. Last game I had my banshee fell into lava three times over the course of two turns. Last time it did the mech fell over and insta melted in the lava Schwarzenegger style. Next turn my only hover APC sideslipped into the hole left by the banshee. Good laugh.

As for shitty mechs, my company has a Victor, Charger and a shadowhawk. For a light maybe a flea? I got a locust and a javelin though I don't know if they are shit or not (got less than 10 games under my belt). Don't know if it's considered shit or not but I love my hunchback (4/6 so a little slower than what your looking for). Died in every game I've taken it but it's fun beelining it at my opponent blasting away with the AC20 until I get into punching range.

>specialists able to operate a KF drive
This involves pressing buttons on a computer. Do you know what a jumpship crew does if anything goes wrong in their core? They put out an SOS signal. They do not have any of the specialized equipment to work on it onboard. Nobody does. If the core cracks, the only thing you can do with it is melt it down and reforge it from the ground up. There are precisely zero people in the setting who are experts at repairing a KF core, because that isn't a thing you can do.
>>
>>98639058
Sure, but without oil it would be a wholly irrelevant desert shithole with under a tenth of its current population. The point is that a resource can be found and highly valuable enough that a large cache of it is enough to build a nation on while still not being so rare that it can't be found anywhere. KF drives existed well before the Marian Hegemony. It's rare, it's not the spice from Dune that only comes from one planet period.
>>
>>98639072
>This involves pressing buttons on a computer.
So exactly what a nuclear reactor operator does?
>>
A reminder that the IS at large completely lost the ability to work with the underlying physics of jump ships until Helm. They could only make existing designs because nobody had specialized scientists for it.
>>
>>98639081
Tomatoes, cucumbers.
Making a "functional" nuclear reactor actually isn't that difficult. You can make it scrappy and bad and it will still irradiate everything nearby while boiling water. A poorly made jump core just misjumps. You can't get useful results from it.
>>
>>98638896
Your implying Comstar only used Battlemechs.

They did not. Artillery does wonders against Clan Battlemechs and Battlearmor.
>>
>>98639099
And yet between first starting research and the first prototype (which worked) was only five years. You figure if it was so absolutely impossible to develop that half a dozen civilizations scattered across hundreds of worlds couldn't develop in centuries that earth alone couldn't develop it in a mere 5 years from start to prototype.

All of this also ignores that you don't need multiple KF drives to colonize. When planet A has enough people to go forth send a ton of people on the jump ship and have them go to planet B. Repeat as desired.
>>
>>98638896
Comstar brought like a dozen Level V units. They had enough vehicles to pave the battlefield in tanks.
>>
>>98639105
Not during the Clan invasion. RCTs got tore to pieces by clusters despite having artillery, infantry, armor, etc.
Hence why people focus on the mech ratio as three regiments to one cluster.
>>
>>98639126
Not really, they brought nearly three times as many mechs as tanks.
A vehicle level I really should be 2 or more tanks.

Hack fraud authors forgetting the size of an RCT is a separate thing entirely to how effective an IS force is against a clan formation.

A pure alloy. No tin, no aluminum, nothing else. The one consistent point on jump cores is that they must be absolutely perfect.
>>
>>98639201
Clans actually rock at protractive battles, normally. Or rather, sequential battles. It let them rape the IS forces sideways in the invasion. "Oh, we both got our forces shot up? Good thing we have omnimechs that can be repaired in a tenth the time, and swapped out to loadouts convenient to the next tactical situation." Old IS forces were used to disengaging when their mechs were near crippled and then repairing but the clanners are just so much better and faster at it. Just imagine Star Colonel Fuckface showing up in the same machine he was hammering you with missiles with n the plains, except now it's mint again and mounts dual UAC20's because you thought you would be cute and draw him into the city.

Tukayyid worked because the clans weren't just fighting C*, they were competing with each other at the same time, plus it being a single drawn out battle instead of a sequence of smaller ones. That's what really kicked the legs out from under them on the bidding and fighting front.

>You're Star League?

>The Great Houses were fucking retards that wouldn't stop fighting
It had nothing to do with that. It was to prevent the Davions becoming the head of a new Star League and Comstar losing its power. They wanted everyone constantly divided and fighting. Everything coming together and getting peaceful robs Comstar of its mission.

It had everything to do with that. The Houses kept fighting, and Davion started the 4th Succession War while ComStar was trying to create balance to prevent a war. And the Inner Sphere was preparing for the next war, not coming together and getting peaceful.
>>
>>98639234
Omnimechs are only easier to repair in the extremely marginal circumstance of a weapon being crit without any structure being damaged.
>>
>>98639257
>Davion started the 4th Succession War while ComStar was trying to create balance to prevent a war.

Davion was upsetting the balance by threatening to actually win the endless wars slowly strangling humanity to the point Comstar could save them and take over. They even say this. Just read Waterley's own dialogues in Heir to the Dragon.
>>
>>98639246
>It had nothing to do with that.

the latter disproves the former. davion wasn't gaining the lead by peace but by war.

>>
>>98639264
Winning the wars the houses were starting and forcing on humanity.
ComStar was trying to create a balance to stop the wars:
>The Primus nodded. "The current political situation in the Successor States depends upon maintaining a balance. If any Successor Lord believes he or she is powerful enough to conquer a neighbor, humanity will once again be plunged into the maelstrom of war.

Davion broke that balance and killed 100 million people.

Hell, Waterly is only in power in Heir to the Dragon because of Davion.

No they didn't. Just a reminder that the last time the clans had a Total War event was the Wolverine Extermination but beyond that they hadn't fought a real actual war in over 200 years.

By fluff, yes. A new config is often swapping in new arms and torsos. Just look at the difference in a Vulture Prime and a Vulture C. The whole torsos unplug. This is also behind the identical look in a lot of the first wave Invasion Omnis limbs. The damaged parts still need to be repaired the normal way, but you can just swap to a new config or new parts as easy as rearming and go. Omnis are so fucking broken.

Davions pick and chose. A Liao proposal in the past to a First Prince to give up their claim to the First Lordship and back the Davion claim in exchange for the Chesterton worlds was rejected outright. Also, if at any point the clans decided to go back on their word, then the entire IS was still screwed anyway.
Imagine an alternate timeline in which after Tukayid the clans reacted differently. Instead of calling a truce, the loss got all the clans to stop being in a pissing match with eachother so much and work together better. They also report back to the homeworlds and the rest of the clans throw their full support into the invasion. The IS wants to party and live it up just to find out that the 7 clans they beat were still holding back and now 12 more clans are on their way. All Batchals and bidding is canceled. Warship use is now authorized. It's actually laughable how screwed the IS was and that they only survived because the clans let them. Yet the IS called it a victory. A victory so great that 100 years later the clans are still occupying conquered systems. It was all such a massive cope and delusion to avoid facing the reality that they were spared.
But hey, don't let that little fact stop you from enjoying a Tex video on it. I like those too, even with the obvious biases.

Actually starting to think something like this
>Banshee BNC-3E
Only 4 walk speed but at 95 tons and with only 15 maximum damage in a single volley
>Charger CGR-1A1
Classic underarmed, underarmored, but can run pretty fast
>Exterminator EXT-4A
A bunch of medium lasers but if it jumps and fires all its lasers it builds up heat fast
>Quickdraw QKD-4G
5 Jump but only 2 forward medium lasers and an SRM 4. Good rear facing firepower though

Highly inefficient, but comes in at only 4967 BV for all 4/5 pilots and a lance where five mechs have 5 walk speed, two have 5 jump, and the main fire support mech still has 4 walk speed.

First, false premise. Second, you already got the rearming rules. That covers everything but fixed equipment in non-swap areas like the CT.
