>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet & Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Full Spectrum Dominance,
Gaslands, HeroClix, Kings of War, Lords & Legends,
Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam,
SAGA, Sahipkıran, Sludge, Space Weirdos, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sword Weirdos,
Urban War, Void Admiral, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic,
North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat,
Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

It isn't.

>>98678596
3 x 5/6 is hardly small
>>
>>98678610
>3 x 5/6
What the fuck is that unit of measurement, no wonder the US uses metric for anything important and then convert it to imperial.
Regardless of that it is 54"x36". That is smaller than the already stupidly small 40k boards of 60"x44"
Specially when the old 6'x4' that 40k used to have was already too small.
>>
>>98678702
>What the fuck is that unit of measurement,
It's 3 foot by 5 foot or 6 foot, what the fuck do you think it was? Centimeters? Fucking idiot.
Anyway, that's not a small space. 2 x 2 is a small space. 3 x 3 is a small space. Anything that has 5 or more foot in its measurement is not small.
>>
>>98678576
Would have given it a try if the scale was smaller, like 10 maybe 15mm instead of this giant stuff
>>
Are there any games that have like base building, base defence as part of the game? .. ilke playing and rts or maybe simple dota lite elements?
>>

>>

It's advertising, can't have people see "gamers playing with indeterminate minis" tgrough tbe LGS full length wall-to-wall windows on the sidewalk, it needs to be very clear what ip the minis are

If it was an appropriate scale for the gameplay I would expect out of an adaptation of an RTS, instead of the appropriate scale for a business decision to try and capture some of the 40k market share, I'd be interested.

>mini dried flowers
on your euro equvilant of amazon. 300 of them are less than $10 in rural leafistan.
Lots of ways to get grass tufts, either cutting up a used door mat or getting a variety pack of disposable house painting brushes. Tape the base where you want to cut and you've got tufts.

She does a shitload of conversions and sculpting, not unlike our own Behelit-anon. There are close-ups in the gallery and the article (check the "undead" tag), there's a lot of modded old GW models in there.

Yeah I've been watching my Instagram blow up over this shit since last night. I'm the guy who posted >>98688719 as well so I'll say it again. The "28" hobby scene, God bless them, I like their models, I like their events, I like their whole approach to the hobby... But it's ALWAYS fucking some new drama. Like actual soap opera shit where you roll your eyes hard enough to hurt yourself. Remember last year in Nottingham where your same guy - poor Trent, plus Ramshackle Curtis, were getting fucked over by that landlord who's dating Roguehobbies. And that was a whole week of shitrain that went nowhere. Same people had this weird struggle session thing a month or so ago where you had to get mad at Grimdark Compendium because they'd reposted some right-wing guy's models on their channel. Like who fucking cares? At least when a former friend starts fucking you over financially that's a genuine reason to be mad, so props to them for having a real grievance this time. It's just that the amount of drama they stir up, overall, leads me to keep the whole scene at arm's length.
>>
>>98689237
Yeah agreed, and like many small scenes people are either knobs who take advantage of others, or start thinking they're a celebrity.

See what SPRU kicks up. There were 150 tickets left the last time I looked, no idea what capacity is, big venue for such a show so hopefully that means they've sold like 500 or something. There was some silly drama there too with Department of Wargaming dropping out.

So what are you currently working on lads? I'm working on armour for these reaper wolf demons, but haven't decided if the more ornate armour plates are better than the more plain ones. The former have the problem of being a lot chunkier than the latter. But this might be an issue of me spending too much time at looking at these models up close.

I've also heard that reaper bones don't take kindly to primer. I washed the model in warm water and dishwasher soap before I started gluing any bits on. Will this help the primer stick better?

Biggest problem is to get attention for your system and cater to the common taste of customers.
If you are too different or unique, people dislike your designs = no sales. If you ape GW and are cheaper than it is possible people buy it as stand-ins = more sales.

Fresh battle today, the Imperial forces under Golfric, cavalry elements reformed, are ambushed on the march by Snazzgits remaining forces. I rolled for element recovery, 3+ for Goblins, 4+ for Orcs, 5+ for trolls and knights. In the end Snazzgit was only able to recover one element of goblins and the lost wolf chariots, whilst Golfric recovered both knights.
Snazzgit sprung his ambush as the column entered the gap between the hills. The initial rush did well, the Goblins destroying the lead knight element and the wolf chariots destroying the Imperial handgunners, but the tide began to turn and although they managed to destroy a spear element, the Imperial column formed up and destroyed the Goblin forces. Only Snazzgit escaped.

It's funny because whilst I can't say it's a fall in sales for certain, they only have to file micro-accounts with Companies House, but their "current assets" have absolutely collapsed in 2025 with a big loan or something too. Interesting.

What are you looking at?
I did my LotR minis with a similar idea in mind. Regular meadow with the odd flower for the good guys here and there.

I put down a 3mm grass flock base layer first before adding some tufts and some woodland scenics flock for variety. Loose flock is way cheaper than tufts and can do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of layering textures for you.
The trick is to look at railway modelling supplies and not wargaming supplies though (like in ye olden days when that was the only thing you could buy when building tables etc. These days there is a small cottage industry around selling smaller badges of stuff to wargamers for marked up prices).

You can get big boxes of tufts for around 20 bucks from mininatur.de for example. Big means "ca 42x15cm 305,50 / m2" sheets of plastic filled with tufts. Those sizes are meant for railway layouts and you can easily do 100-200 miniature bases with those.

They also sell the colored flock for flowers by itself in little baggies for about ~5 bucks. So you can just use regular tufts and apply a bit of pva with a brush over the tips of your bushels and add the blooms by hand. Depending on the look you are after that might be a good alternative to buying premade tufts as well.
>>
>>98678787
Cloth Goblins for Forbidden Psalm has three simple scenarios where you collect wood, build a fort and defend it. It's really barebones which is kind of the point but you could always add to it.
>>
>>98678787
A lot of campaign based games have elements of that - mostly as an upkeep type of mechanic between the scenarios being played though.
OG Necromunda had you manage territories, Some supplements for Frostgrave 1st edition allowed you to buy hideouts and equip them with room allowing you to take more men, brew potions etc.

Base defense as part of the game would be basically any mission/scnerio with an attacker and defender, which most wargames do have on some level. It just doesn't tie into an in-game economy like with an RTS. It's really beyond the scope of what you can model in a single mission I suppose. You are dipping into territory of grand strategy games with that sort of stuff. Risk or any hex and chit type game I suppose.

Honestly, given how there are dwarfs in all sort of variants and flavours out there, with dozens of manufacturers producing hundreds of different themed dwarfs, I'm ok with GW taking theirs in a different direction

There are a few good ones. The heroes and the king on the throne are very cool miniatures.

The ones with the hand cannons do intrigue me

The axe warriors are fairly generic.

I don't care for the golems.
I honestly don't understand who the target demographic is for the female dwarfs. It's not the fact that they're female (the red-headed princess is a lovely model), but they're just very ugly models. The only reason for a business to have social media is to give people updates on their products and services. Unless the demographics of Edinburgh are affecting AA's ability to sell me shit, then it should not be on their business account. Throw a "last white man in Scotland" sale or introduce a Based Defenders of the Haggis line and it'll be business-relevant.

I'd say start with Five Parsecs from Home because it's simple and has actual rules for everything except terrain placement rather than just, "make something up" which isn't helpful for a beginner. Once you're comfortable with it you can change or replace rules if you want more crunch or the like, or move on.

No, retard. It's for communication with people. If a business wants to communicate that they have a sale on, or a new line coming out, then social media is an appropriate publicity channel.

Because it's not relevant to this conversation. This conversation is about a specific instance of a business owner putting his politics on his company account, not any other.

If I look around where I live the whole "conspiracy theory" angle about replacement from the mainstream media rings hollow, because while I've lived here the whole place has become an arab ghetto around me.

That aside what is the point of arguing with a random person about what a a third person posts on his social media? This hasn't been the case for at least 10 years.

I've never bought GW miniatures that weren't 2nd hand, and can tell you that at least sonce 2013ish, GW miniatures on the secondary market have seen a steady price increase.

After the demise of warhammer fantasy there was significant but short lived dip in price before prices started going up even more.

I used to spend less than 50 cents canadian per infantry sized models (when buying lots); nowadays it's really hard to find anything less than 70% of its new retail price.

You can still find some good deals, but it's become much harder and rarer than it used to be.

I hope you can find some cheap skeletons anon, good luck.

No, it is for persons.
Businesses have their own websites and advertisements to inform customers of what they are doing, usage of social media is just a way to cut advertising costs, it doesn't change that social media was created for persons to communicate with each other.
Business entities do not socialize, they advertise, it is not called advertising media.
And I expect you to get exactly this butthurt and boycott every company that does so if you expect to be given the treatment of a neutral party on the subject.

It's not a strawman you are just bad at reading comprehension.
That is local law being applied to conduct on the internet, not actually policing how people use the internet.

Saying "x what made to do one thing" does not equate everyone only using it for that purpose. And yes companies do cut their costs wherever they can, including advertisement. Wow. More news at 11.
What even is your point? You don't want corporate accounts at all in what to ammounts to "the public forum"? Try to square that with the law anywhere.

6mm for some mechanized combat focused games.

40Kfag here, wondering what other miniature agnostic systems like OPR try to somewhat recreate a streamlined version of 40K with less rules autism? Any recommendations
>>
>>98703381
Osprey has printed at least half a dozen of them. just a matter of figuring out exactly how much fiddliness you actually want. you can try xenos rampant which is 40k with more of a rick priestley design philosophy. there's also the mantic shit like deadzone and warpath.
>>
>>98703406
>40k with more of a rick priestley design philosophy
>>
>>98703381
No Limits! and Tomorrow's War could work out for you, but if you're set on the kind of streamlining seen in OPR, probably Xenos Rampant like >>98703406 suggests. I like to suggest NL! and TW because of how robust the force building is. You can really build the quality into your troops to reflect the fluff of whatever 40k army you're trying to adapt. Warzone also works for that quality representation, but still too heavy a system, plus no SDR exists in the wild to do that, would be all vibes to throw things together.
>>
>>98703416
You'd have to use a microscope to find any in current year 40k to be sure.

i get that, out of the 5 factions coming out the humans are the ones im least interested in.
Other factions are:
>Satyr/wood elf hippies led by a deer centaur
>Orc elementalist who speak to their ancestors through giant trees similar to na'vi
>Dwarf cavemen with a hunting culture, leader rides a giant bear
>Undead trees, zombie dryads, leader is just a giant tree who cant move but can spawn undead saplings.
>future faction are water goblins (basically murlocs) with their leader being a chieftan riding a giant crab

also the game is fully free to play on table top sim with all factions and cards available with a full working deckbuilder available on their site if anyone is interested in giving the game a go.

Nordic Weasel has a bunch of 40k model agnostic games. They tend towards arbitrated play and lighter rules more towards the rogue trader/2nd edition era with variations on how cleaned up the rules are and scale.
Renegade Scout is a direct RT retroclone if you want granularity.
Haven't even looked at Shoot People In Space but its supposed to be squad vas squad skirmish size. Warbands even.
Squad and Rogue Hammer are platoon scale engagements, there's a fellow with purple marines here who was really into it.
Laser Storm is the Epic scale one.
There's probably more, guy was cranking them out for a while. Long enough people have weasel fatigue, I haven't even gotten to the 5 parsecs stuff that's RT inspired but deviated a lot and gone through 3 or 4 editions depending on how you want to count them.

>GW miniatures on the secondary market have seen a steady price increase
I couldn't disagree more. I keep finding so many good deals on the secondary market I turned flipping those into a small but almost stable second source of income. Just yesterday I bought a brand new Nighthaunt half of the Soul Wars set for 25 EUR. Not so long ago I found a Blood Angels Tactical Squad for 30 EUR and sold it for 85 EUR the very next day. I don't even spend much time searching for those deals, I literally browse Facebook trading groups and some local trading apps during my breaks at work.

This is horse shit, XR is bad.
>>
>>98704529
Because?
>>
I've been looking at XR. I wanted to make a regular sci-fi human army and a space bugs army, but it's not really clear to me why there is a bunch of Xenomporh stat profiles. I could mostly do the same with the usual infantry-elite-berserker etc
>>
>>98704607

They're the greater and lesser warbeasts from dragon rampant. They don't get firefight reactions, but they're a lot faster than other units.
>>
>>98704576
It's practically impossible to kill something without needing your entire force focusing on them, it falls apart at higher point limits, the rules themselves are bland and uninspired, the game is hailed as a mini agnostic gem, that's all it does well, be miniature agnostic.
>>
>>98704627
Fair points, but I think you can easily solve the lethality issue.
>>
>>98704658
The fact remains that I shouldn't need to solve a problem. That problem should have been ironed out LONG before the book went to publishing.
The mini agnostic lovers out there tend to love games that aren't lethal, or that force you to make enemies flee the board. That way, they can tell "any stories they want to, with any minis they want to" and that is, imo, a weakness. Games, mini agnostic or not, should be machines to drive narratives that exist within a certain framework. if I deploy several Reduced Model Units to represent how elite they are, then they should be somewhat akin to the 11th edition Custodes that were just revealed for 40K. There should be 3 of them in a squad, they should have a high armour save and they should have enough wounds to make them hard to remove. But instead, in XR, a Reduced Models Unit is just as dangerous as a squad of 12 soldiers that are armed to the teeth. The damage works out the same, you chip away at each others health (wounds) very slowly and, if you're lucky, you can make them flee, throw down their weapons or otherwise surrender and get removed from the table.
At least with OPR, loath to admit it though I may be, units are a danger to each other and can scale in survivability and lethality with the use of keywords like Tough and Deadly.

I bought the XR rulebook, and I've played (I think) 8-ish games. It's a failed experiment, people here who constantly bring it up as a go-to for Warhammer refugees have seemingly not played it and just recycle other anons opinions on the matter.
Sorry if this came across as a rant.
>>
>>98704658

You could for example use the 12/6 dice split from other rampants. Makes shooting a lot deadlier. I've a house rule upgrade that allows for +1 to hit for shooting and firefights as well. But in general I like the way units are worn down over time in XR. I'll have to think of a vehicle damage system to allow for quicker destruction of tanks and the like. Another idea I played with was area effect weapons, where the initial target is hit with the regular shoot value and special rules, while units within X inches are hit on a 5+.
>>
>>98704709
>The fact remains that I shouldn't need to solve a problem.
>and that is, imo, a weakness.
Even you admit it's a problem for you, it is not to your taste. Have you considered that others like it the way it is?
Also I really don't get the mentality of being upset about something wrong when you could easily just solve the problem and continue enjoying the thing. (Well, not you, because you think the rules are bland too and want to play with bigger armies)
>>
>>98704627
>It's practically impossible to kill something without needing your entire force focusing on them
That's a good thing. High lethality means you spend all your time taking your toys off the table instead of playing with them and exacerbates first mover advantage.
>>
>>98704709

I don't mind the ranting, it's good that we disagree and argue about the merits of different game system.
It's true that opr is a lot deadlier and has a bit more granularity because it was explicitly intended for 40k refugees. However, it also has it's balance validation restrictions. I think tough (6) units can only cause like 8 hits a turn at max. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You can scale the survivability of units in XR too with upgrades like boarding shield, force fields, combat medic and some others. But your issue seems to be the lack of offensive upgrades, that lead to slow slugging matches?
>>
>>98704744
>Have you considered that others like it the way it is?
I have, and for love nor money I cannot get along with that mentality.

>>98704746
>High lethality means you spend all your time taking your toys off the table instead of playing with them
High lethality means you play more intelligently with your models and every model removed, from your side or the opponents, is a move considered and made to a logical conclusion.

>>98704760
> I think tough (6) units can only cause like 8 hits a turn at max.
I honestly don't recall that being the case, but I could 100% be wrong.

My issue isn't so much the lack of offensive upgrades, moreso that irrespective of upgrade taken (defensive or offensive) all army lists are remarkably low power.
>>
>>98703726

>>
>>98704881
The counter to that is that Warhammer fucking sucks shit so high lethality games had better be granular man to man skirmish titles.
Otherwise I'm having formations of dudes advance and not wasting time removing each Pierre or Hans as they clash in Verdunn.
>>
>>98704840
You are right. Retarded move will be a retarded move no matter if it kills you in a turn or in three.
>>
I also thought Xenos Rampant was a bit poo but when I said so I got dogpiled.
>>
I read Dragon Rampant and liked the customization rules for units but found the actual combat rules lacking. Oathmark has a similar problem, kingdom rules are cool but core gameplay mechanics need work.

Getting my fantasy itch scratched by Frostgrave right now while I keep an eye out for one that can handle actual battlds in 28mm well.

>>
I’m thinking of getting into bolt action. What do I need to know?
>>
>>98705951
I personally don't like it. I played a good chunk in 2E in the late 2010s with a Finnish army, sold them, and started a British army when 3E came out. 3E is a major step down, it's both less historical and less fun to play. The only good change is the listbuilding.

On the recommendation of /hwg/ I tried Chain of Command, but it was also bad fir different reasons.
>>
>>98705951
Dont get wrapped up in how "gamey" it is, its basically warhammer with historical models and not a true hist game.

Also automatic weapons are kindof shit, dont fall into the trap of taking a lot of them when seeing their stats, the range cut off isnt worth it. Basically just have a squad who you intend to rush around and give them more than other groups and give everyone else rifles and veteran status or MGs.

>>98705982
Yea the gamey part kindof ruins it, its great if you like historical models though, its just an excuse to use them.

>>
>>98706149
Try Disposable Heroes, Fireball Forward, Crossfire.
>>
>>98706196
Exactly, so its not that big of an issue. If you want actual historical games you are almost exclusively going to be playing scenario based stuff and not 28mm. Bolt Action is a cool way to play a tabletop game that has the aesthetics of WW2.
>>
>>98684859
What stupid looking models.
>>
>>98706401
Lol, I'm not the anon asking, though the response may have been useful to that anon, I was just inserting my smart-ass "well akshually" because my limited experience with historical players is they like to jerk off over their realism but they always fall short of actually following the history (because that'd be no fun) making it all a rather moot point.
Which is probably why Bolt Action is the name I always hear/see.
