what age were you when you first started painting
>>98895847Around 13 or 14 back in 1997 when one of my classmates brought on of those brochures to school, with advertisments of 5th edition of WH Fantasy, 40k and Epic 40. We stayed in the hobby for a couple years, then quit for almost two decades and came back to it during the first covid lockdown. Also reposting my newest result.
>>98895847About 7 when one of my friends brought in a load of the old little fold outs that used to come in every boxI still have lots of them around somewhere
>>9889584725.I was too poor for Warhammer until I had a real job after college
>>98895164you are ignoring the difference between 2d and 3d, either because you are stupid and never stopped to think about it, or because you are a rat and doing it intentionally to support your argument. if you are trying to paint a gold sphere on canvas you will never be able to make it look like a sphere with gold paint. even if you forget about paint entirely and use real gold leaf it will never look round because in the end it's just a flat circle. this is the limitation of metallic coatings ON CANVAS. when you get to 3d objects the situation is entirely reversed. you will never be able to paint a ball using yellows and browns that looks as much like gold as real electroplated gold, let alone good gold paint. at best nmm will always look stylized, which is fine if stylized is your goal, but if you are just looking for results it's doing more work for less payout in the eyes of everyone but 2d elitists.
>>9889584711-12 years old. saw DoW 2 and instantly got hooked up, painting got much better once i hit the 25's
I went with the fleshy look in the end.I'll probably try to lighten it with some drybrushing, and look for more places where I fucked-up (I only noticed the thumb nail after taking the pic, and fixed it)
>>9889584712
>"I hate painting eyes", said anon, every time he have to paint a pair.
>>98895847Its three phases for me: In elementary school, i painted 1:72 italeri and revell soldiers and tanks with disgusting enamel paints, because i had a neighbor who was like 5-6 years older, and he was into scale models. I have no clue why my parents accepted those smelly paints on their kitchen tableAround 17, i got introduced to 40k (3rd edition), and i painted a chaos marine army and played casually for maybe 2-3 yearsAnd lastly, around mid 30, i got back into it during covid and from buying a single start collecting chaos marines set (for nostalgias sake) and a couple of paints, it evolved into buying 4 3d printers over the years.
>>98895788Secret Santa-chan, should I expect a follow up email besides the form submittal one, or just one when matches are made?
>>98896380what's wrong with enamel paints? I used testors model master to paint my airplanes as a kid.
>>98895847I started maybe about 6 years ago, and really only got serious 3 or so
>>98896410>Secret Santa-chan, should I expect a follow up email besides the form submittal one, or just one when matches are made? The form will send you one automatically now, and when I make the matches here in a couple of weeks, I'll send you one explaining who your match is.If you need to ask me a question, the second encoded link in >>98895788 is the address for questions and correspondence.
The Trainwreck continues. I really ought to have googled more before starting the project.
>>98896434
>>98895847>what age were you when you first started paintingMust've been before I was 12, since I knew where I was when I started painting, and I knew when I moved here. Like >>98896380, I painted plastic scale military models with Testors enamel paints first. In fact, the original reason I chose Blood Angels about 35 or so years ago was solely because I had several bottles of Testors Flat Red enamel on hand. We didn't even get our own roolz until 1996.I still have a bunch of Mk VI beekees painted with Testors Flat Red.
So, let's get this straight - would metallic paints actually damage natural hair brush or it's just a meme?
>>98896434nah, this iteration is by far the best one. Three things come to mind:1) why extra armor everywhere but where the crew compartment is?2) combine textures - for example, use the "ERA" bricks on top of the skirts, but leave the lower part just flat regular plasticard 3) You could also add some angles to the plates - for example like in picrel. It's not necessarily realistic, but they can help with the effect a lot. And I still think you should drop the recoilless rifles and replace them with some scifi weaponry. They are way too iconic, and, to be honest, were always just funky looking, even irl. I can imagine some heavy 40k plasma or something similar could actually finally sling it over to the "actual kitbash" territory. The lil turret in the center deserves some optics, too.
>>98896464short, yes. long, nonatural hair holds onto paint better, and small specs of metals even better. if you don't properly clean them, it goes up and ruins the brush. You really have to wash them thoroughly with soap after each use and ensure no paint travels up into the ferrule. if you can't commit to being that anal about maintenance, just go with synthetic.
>>98896477You're just throwing poop at the wall at this point.Put the tonk away and come back to it in a year or more when you've learned more.
>>98896477Thank you. I've learned a lot from this project. I can add more plates and make some angled cuts (pretty sure I've now seen ERA bricks which had a triangular shape). As for the sci-fi weapons, I had an idea for the barrel: twisting two wires together in a pattern like pic related, but obviously a lot tighter. It can be done easily with a drill and it could give an impression of some sort of energy weapons.
Here are some Swiss Guards, kit bashed from the Townsguard from ArchonStudio.>>98895847I started at 10 with WHFB.>>98895884>>98896242Very nice banners!
One of worse paints I made recently but I don't think I can actually do it better.
>>98896380>enamel paintsSame. The local hobby store owner, who was a sweet guy, unfortunately did not know the right way to paint a model. He had me painting Orc Warriors with testors gloss enamels, unthinned, straight out of the pot. It looked like shit and my mother also always made me paint outside because she thought the fumes would give me cancer. So my first foray into mini painting was messy, unsatisfying, no fun at all. Glad I stuck with it until some years later I found the Internet and learned about acrylics and thinning.
>>98895847Around 30. An old friend gifted me a box of 40k miniatures so I decided I'd give it a try. I'm almost 40 now and painting minis is one of the things that keeps me sane.
>>98896433Thanks dude
Finished the stitching on the flesh book. It's not great but I don't think I did too bad for my first real sculpting attempt. Maybe I'll scrape it off and try again. Also tried my hand at getting the flowers smaller. I managed about the right size and with a bit more practice I think I'll be able to make some decent roses at the right scale. What's a good tool lube I could use since using water is kind of a pain in the ass?
>>98897036vaseline or cooking oil
>>9889584725 when during paternity leave
>>98897051Seconded for the former, haven't tried the latter.
>>9889584713 in 2017 for first abortive attempts, 17 in 2021 for the current streak
>>98896658These are great. I actually had the exact same idea with them.
have there ever been model train or dollhouse generals on 4chan?
>>98897471there was some talk about model railroading maybe a month ago hereanon posted this one great british model autist who had his own tv show i think in the 80´slittle embarassed because i dont remember his name and i think i watched every episode
>>98897325>13 in 2017shit you were born after i first started getting models
>>98897555>anon posted this one great british model autist who had his own tv show i think in the 80´sThat sounds like Bob Symes. He died about ten years ago, I think. Apart from trains, he lead pretty interesting life.
>>98897647yeah thats himseemed like a cool dude rip
About done with the speeder. Now glue it all together, and onto the crew and the base. The base will be fun; I've never poured resin or tried making moving water. I hope I won't fuck it up too hard.
>>98897818smooth paintjob and you did a good job putting it together gz> I've never poured resin or tried making moving waterluckily it will be put on a flying stand base so you can practise as many times as you needi also like the pink fluffy dice
>>98897818Cool stuff and great attention to details as always, raptorbro. Including the fuzzy dice.
Surely I'll get to the wraps/belts next time>>988958472017, so 29? I had seen plenty of Warhammer in college but one, didn't have a local store, two, too brokeAfter playing blood bowl 2 though I saw the blood bowl starter at my local game store at the time. Didn't have anyone to play with at the time so I just painted>>98896242Beauty of a banner. Need to find me something to freehand
>>98897847>i also like the pink fluffy diceThank you anon, I think it's the centerpiece of the entire model. >luckily it will be put on a flying stand base so you can practise as many times as you needThat's my aim. I would like to do a larger Catachan river hovercraft diorama sometime next year (inspired by picrel), so this is a bit of training for it. >>98897862Thank you, anon!
>>98897818Nice shading on the armor panels.
>>98897818Do you have a background in scale modelling, raptorbro?
>>98897471Theoretically I guess those would go on /toy/. I know they already host a Scale Model General thread for those detailed tank, plane, etc models that aren't part of a tabletop game system. I am surprised we don't have more train threads though, it's autistic enough to seem a natural fit here.
>>98897818
finished these todaywent little too hard on that dust but luckily you can just wipe it off with a moist finger
>>98897896Thanks, anon!>>98897951A little bit. I'm currently building South African Rooikat in 1/35, when it gets a bit presentable, I'll post it itt. >>98898003Even used the Dark Gull Gray, the same that was used in Vietnam-era Huey interiors.
I haven't painted anything for Halloween yet, so I started some Flintloque zombies. Captain Preserovich arrived missing an arm and it's not anywhere in the box. Still, it feels sort of appropriate as he is a zombie. Thankfully everything else in the box seems normal.
Test painting my first ork boy from the Armageddon box. First time I think I've pulled off slap-chop contrasts successfully. Not sure if I'm happy with the yellow shirt. I might swap it out for tan or brown.
>>98895847I was 12 or maybe 13 when I first got Assault on Black Reach I think.Attached is a pic of my first terminator sergeant from middle school, then the next one I painted in highschool, and the one I painted just a few months ago
>>988958478 years old, when I first got Heroquest and my dad gave me his old modelling oil paints and a big jar of acetone.
>>98896371Black dot, white dot, black dot. Smaller every step.Try a more red/pink shading on her skin instead of the brown.
i bought a new paint and it doesn't look as id hoped on the mini. i am morose
>>98898195did you lose your dominant hand after high school? that's a hell of a downfall
>>98898227sounds like a really kickass dad
>>98898333Yeah, he died 3 years later in his early 40's. I'll be his age soon.. I need a son.
>>98898373i know the feeling and sorry for your loss anon mine has passed away toothere are many anons who paint with their kids and in time will teach them to play tooit does sound like fun
>>98898277Lost it in the war
>>98898503thank you for your service
>>98898110>>98898155>>98898174fun stuff boys
Haven't posted any ork stuff recently. Here's a freebooterz grot ship I finished earlier this month. The Captain's hair kinda looks like purple spaghetti but whatever, I'm happy with the rest>>98895847Around the age of ten. Didn't really stick with it for long, just a couple of months. Got back into it around 2018.>>98896242That's a sick ass banner anon>>98896658Polearms are the best. Nice paintjob btw>>98897818Looking sharp as usual. That pink dice is a lovely touch. Have you seen the toilet paper & PVA glue method of making water btw? Might be useful for you if you wanna make water features for smaller units without stressing with resin pours>>98897868Looking very nice! >>98898174Not bad anon! I think a brown shirt would look better and it'd be easy to slap some brown contrast over the yellow
>>98898883Example of water made with toilet paper & PVA glue. Ain't as impressive as resin water of course, but it's way easier and stress free
>>98894281Not that Anon but it does have a point..the rest of the fart smelling nmm - influencer jewtuber - it, kept complaining and shitting on GW for prefering stuff that looked like their IP and eavy metal, Yikes... imagine that?So they took what made it special, the EM cup and turned it into circle jerk for the same group of individuals that like to paint a certian way but that dont like the GW style. GW has its own team of professional painters, so why the fuck are they getting guest judge? This faggot is everything that is wrong with GD, back in my day the SS used to be fucking mind blowing. I still remember how people seethed at the Skink winning the slayer sword because it was too much like GW's stuff.
>>98899032>I still rememberWasn't that like 2years ago?
>>98898195weird skill progression
How mad will my gf be if I spend more money and effort on the secret santa than on her?
>>98899547Who cares? Girlfriends are temporary, the homies and Christmas joy is eternal
>>98899547How mad will your ex-gf be, you mean.
>>98899547She doesn't have to know.
>>98899547Your gf monitors your finances? Lmfao holy cuck
>>98899032seethe more.and they did put a TMM in silver
>>98899547She doesn't have to know? Most likely she wouldn't understand anyway. This year is the first time I'm participating in secret Santa, how much have people typically spent on their gifts?
>>98899600Average equivalent of 100€ I guess, that's at least what I assumed from checking photos from previous two years.
>>98899608Right. That's more than I budgeted for my son's Christmas present... But thankfully he doesn't really know much about the value of money yet.
>>98899560>>98899565>>98899600Well, we live together. I highly doubt I'll be able to receive a mysterious package from a dude called Bratislav from Siberia or something and not give an explanation lmao. But it's not that serious bros.
>>98899600>how much have people typically spent on their gifts?I spend 0 dollars with my patented, innovative technique.>Buy a ton of shit throughout the year, I'm talking several dozens of kits>Massive pile of shame builds up>Gift my secret santa bro stuff from my pile of shame
>>98898883That ship is fucking great. Love the paint job. I hope I can match that level with my ork stuff.>>98899032I think it's just a matter of taste really. NMM and all that takes immense level of skill, but I personally prefer actual metallics. Most of the winners and style of the really skilled painters end up with the whole mini looking like velvet or silk. It doesn't looks like what it's actually supposed to look like.Back in the day I remember the European Golden Demon winners were mostly a very realistic and gritty style compared to the American one where there was a lot of NMM and tons of very bright colours. Everything has been very homogenised and the velvet style is just everywhere now.I finished the last three, boring but important for gameplay, barbed wire pieces. I think the dead tree branches stand out too much on the base. It's the first time I used the gamergrass stuff I bought, but I think I need to do some subtle green glazing to the branches to integrate it more with the jungle floor.
>>98899651But doctor, I have no pile of shame!
>>98899644>A package! So you are cheating on me, huh?! How is this bitch named... Bratislav?! Now you are cheating on me WITH A GUY?!
>>98899660Everything is starting to come together pretty good. I think it all looks great grouped up together. And an actual wip shot of some minis. I'm going to paint the Deathwatch blade dude as a Blood Angel with an old helmet and very old bolter I had in an old bits box.I noticed some fucking terrible mold lines I overlooked while building them I need to clean up. The mold lines on all these kits were fucking dreadful. The whole building they have now for their minis is so fucking terrible it turned me off from buying more shit after I get the Armageddon Kill Team box. Then I'm set for a long time before I'll put myself through that fucking misery again.
>>98899661That's a you issue
>>98898883>Have you seen the toilet paper & PVA glue method of making water btwYeah. I remember seeing a local train dude having absolutely insane coastline made with toilet paper method. But train autists are built differently, so I'm not sure I'm up to it. Love your grots, ship's great!
>>98898110Those are 15mm?Looking great, and i dont think the dust is overdone there. If anything, tone down the rust effect on the tracks for your next tanks. Its highly unlikely for rust to build up in random spots on the tracks of operational tanks, while the majority of the track is rather clean. But at that scale, it does not matter too much i guess.
>>98899572The black rim on the cut off ork hand looks very distracting. It's just a black blob right in the middle of the piece.
>>98899660Agree with you on the "velvet" style. Very apt description of it. There were some entries last year that had a really sweet "oil painting" vibe that I really enjoyed. Gritty styles can take a lot of skill as well. I really never liked the velvet style while still recognizing the skill needed for it.
About GS/Miliput use - is vaseline really enough to prevent it from sticking to parts? I wanted to make few parts that would fit existing ones but still separate, would covering said plastic parts in vaseline allow Miliput to adhere but not stick to them? It would need to stay in this form for a while to harden while keeping the shape.
>>98898892Damn, the steel parts like the face and joints are so well done on that guy, did you paint it?
Finished tank man. Yes, I know the dust should be on the entirety of the tracks, I just thought it'd look cooler with some bare metal visible at the top.>>98895847Painted a bit as a teenager and when studying at university but I didn't really get into the hobby properly until I was in my 30s.
>>98900318Brilliant work anon. I think it's fine you didn't dust the top of the tracks, it adds a little more colour variation instead of being red all over.Maybe he was just dropped onto the battlefield and is only just about to start rolling.
>>98900318You have centered the tank treads, but not the model. Had you placed the treads as far back on the base as possible the overhang issue would be mitigated. It is well painted, nothing is done incorrectly, not even the paint scheme, it looks like something you'd expect to see on the GW catalogue. This makes my criticism quite clear, where is evidence of you being involved on this mini? It has no piece of your soul, only your time and money.
>>98900318Add some dust to the top of the tank threads as well. They do go around you know.
>>98900389>It has no piece of your soul, only your time and money.
>>98900441Yeah, yeah. Go cry about in the beer hall, failed art student.
>>98900449You're the failed art student, anon. Only worse, because you became a critic not even in a magazine, but on a mongolian basket weaving forum
>>98900389>there's nothing I can criticize in the paintjob so I will try to damage you emotionally insteadwhat the fuck is wrong with women
>>98900389Not only are you a pretentious faggot but you're also wrong about the overhang or this looking like something eavy metal would paint lmao
>>98895884Really nice anon. Are those beastmen runes?
Does anyone have recommendations for beginner friendly sculpting putty? Ive tried greenstuff before and i was really shit at using it. I just want to make some cloth wraps to go around a weapon and i need to try and make a part of an orc deltoid that i can't cover up with something else.
>>98899660>>98899673Where did you obtain the jungle trees you're using for the terrain?
>>98900079idk if it works for miliput but floor wax works as release agent for 2 part epoxy.
>>98900461>>98900567>>98900569Uh-oh I forgot this is a reddit-leftoid safe space and negative criticisms are verboten. My apologies, everyone's paintjobs are heckin' awesome in their own unique snowflake way....Yes... I suppose this paintjob is unique...
>>98901192Not that guy, but I have bought plenty of those on aliexpress, amazon also have people selling those. They do look better with some paint, I use MTN 94 acrylic artist rattle cans to prime them and then go over with my air brush.
>>98901237>y-you can't confront me on bullshit that I try to pass off as criticism you heckin leftoid bullies :((back to /40kg/
>>98901237Post minis.
>>98900364Thank anon!>>98900389Yeah I decided to go with the official scheme for my admech when starting out. I'm not looking for it to be unique or anything to be honest, I just like this clean style.>>98900391I know you're right, guess I'll do just that and do the same for the 2 other guys I did before to keep it consistent.
>>98901138You could try milliput or tamiya quick type but the truth is that greenstuff is already the most beginner friendly and you're just going to be shit with anything until you build up the skills and experience not to be.
>>98901294And there is nothing wrong with that, sometimes you just want the in universe faction as presented in the lore, or at least as primarily presented in the lore. It's just the only criticism for it, as I did put first, there is nothing done wrong with the paintjob, even the tread dusting is artistically correct if not realistically correct.Truly personal expression is a factor of art and it's the only factor not present here.Don't mistake my sarcasm in the comments that followed as having anything to do with you, that was entirely directed at the fuckwit morons who can't handle criticism being seen anywhere.
>>98899572>seethe more.I dont like smelling my farts thank you. I do think the knight is cooler than calgar desu.
>>9889584732. I've painted, just not miniatures and started because I found a KDM mini I had 15 years ago and put off because I had no idea how to paint it. Started during covid.
>>98901299Thank you, i shall attempt to git gud and watch some tutorials.
How do you identify genuine Ral Partha from recasts? Are those in pic related legit?
whats a good basic range of colors? I'm going to buy some aliexpress prints and start painting again.
>>98901660if you can't tell, what does it matter? You're a hobbyist not a secondary speculator, right?
>>98899660>>98899673Thanks anon! That terrain is looking sweet all together btw, love the lush greens and retro vibes>>98899846Thanks mate! And yes, train model enthusiasts are indeed built differently. The toilet paper water technique ain't difficult to pull off though, neither is it particularly time consuming. My wife pulled it off first try, I'm positive you could do it as well with no issues.>>98900176Thx! Nah it's my wife's first knight. Mostly followed Vince's recipe from his recent knight video but she added an oil wash step and used dirty down rust instead of orange pigments.>>98900318This is fucking sweet anon, that plasma OSL is sexy
>>98901698Ak 3rd gen for normal colors, Vallejo Metal Color for metallics
>>98901698what this anon said >>98901967
>>98901347>>98901237>>98900389You truly put it a lot of effort and time essentially saying nothing but "your mini lacks soul" with a lot of extra words. What's the point of that? As other anons have pointed out, you come off as a pretentious and salty faggot. Critique is all good when it's warranted but in this case it really wasn't
>>98901754I'm a hobbyist, so quality and actually getting what I paid for matter, yes. A speculator wouldn't care if nobody could tell the difference.
>>98902032Judging by his artschool insults hes probably the same retard who had a melty last thread about NMM. Or it could be the dreaded mutant trying to branch out.
>>98902099/pol/jeet insults and talking points is craftsperg.
>>98901660do they taste like lead?
>>98902063>quality>can't tell the difference
Gonna try to do a diorama project, havent really done one before. Don't have a great base for her yet so probably will go to hobby lobby tomorrow and get a plastic cube or something to put everything on.
>>98901192I got these on Amazon, but you can see they're the same trees being sold on aliexpress and a few other places. Probably all from the same factory. The other plants I got are aquarium plants.Like >>98901262 said, they look way better if you paint them. I just give the trunks some Agrax Earthshade and shave some mold lines down a bit, but I'm losing patience and can't be bothered doing them fully. I'm hoping for a little cheerleader effect when it's all on the table.>>98901904Thanks. I was initially using photos I took in Singapore as a reference for colours, but I'm kinda just going for whatever it is now. Just making everything very green and every non jungle piece being rusty and eaten up by the jungle.Any suggestions what to do with the dead tree branches on the ground? I think they stand out too much on the terrain, but the greens on the jungle gamergrass set is a little warmer and might blend in better.
>>98901982>>98901967thank you guys, I appreciate it.
I lied, one more for October!
>>98902454Last time Anon confused low-res red for rust so this time I thought I'd give it a proper try. Please tell me you like it I worked slightly harder than usual.
I will call this one done. Never mind the mold line on the foot. If anything I'll paint the rock when I put it on a base
>>98902373Let's ask >>98902382 he would know, having licked so many as a kid.
>>98902602This model will never see a tabletop in its life
>>98902672You need to go back.
Has anyone posted a recent edition of the Stahly color swatches? Mine's probably 18 months out of date, doesn't have any of the Vallejo TMM stuff included.
>>98902416>Any suggestions what to do with the dead tree branches on the ground? I think they stand out too much on the terrainI can't really see this on the pictures honestly. Might be more jarring in real life but if it's not then I'd just leave it as is>>98902602Looks very nice anon. That bright tan leather is an interesting choice. How much time did you spend on this one?
I finished the main zenithal for these guys. Just have to do the apothecaries and techmarine as well, but I've done enough airbrushing for tonight. I wanted the captain to be a little different from the regular guys so I tried a blue metallic zenithal on him to make it look like his armor was more pristine or something. I don't think it turned out like I wanted. But these guys would just not let themselves be photographed. I think the metallic paint was messing with the exposure levels for the other guys or something.
