Since the terrain general's not around right now, I'll ask here: does anyone know of a source of vulcanised horsehair/furnace filter/comparable material in the UK? I want to use it instead of coir because that shit gets everywhere and is way too fine.
>>
>>98881398
rip, i got a box of the plastics in transit now and shes a beaut to pad it out. i should just drop the 5 for it
>>98881349
the camo pants are unreal good. just brush control and patience? or did you use some tech
>>
>>98881530
Yee glad to see more anons joining the spacenam gang. Btw the sgt. Hawker STL is on sale for three fiddy on the reptilian overlords website if you've got a 3d printer

Regarding the camo pants, it's all painted normally. No special tech. Just took a good look at some reference and came up with a relatively easy recipe, I got it right here. Oh and thx btw!

>VGC Dark Green (basecoat)
>50:50 Dark Green/VMC Intermediate Green
(brush highlight)

>AP Fanatic Oak Brown (fat lines and blobs)
>50:50 AK Olive Green/VMC Ice Yellow (smaller blobs and lines)
>AK Tenebrous Grey (tiny blobs and lines)

>Mix black and raw umber oil wash
>Apply on pants

Yeah I've been less active this year, mostly lurking besides posting some stuff here and there like those inner circle companions a few days ago. Oh and you definitely should continue on your dudes anon, those tau kitbashes you did on them were super sick. Paintjob and basing was really good too, absolutely loved what you did with them

I used bigger, rectangular armour plates instead of spare shields this time.
>>
>>98881614
not really sure what am i looking at here but why not it has potential
>>
>>98881614
Much better, just need to get that one barrel in line with the others, that's going to hurt the end look more than anything else.
>>
>>98881614
were you able to find any real life references of spaced armor being on top of a cage stuck directly onto the hull?
>>
>>98881614
Better definitely, but now the problem is that the design language does not match. The entire vehicle is about sharp edges, all the armor is sharp-edged, too. The armor you've added is extremely rounded.
>>
>>98881846
Is that not the point? Some old hunk of shit being upgraded with violently clashing aesthetics from later times?
>>
>>98881483
Out of curiosity, how many people from each country/continent?
>>
>>98881870
Well no. Hunk of shit is not gonna get anything fancy, it will be roughly-cut rolled steel, no advanced machining. Why it would have round edges (=less coverage + more work)?
>>
>>98881826

It's plastic and the parts in this kit are very fiddly, any tips on how to align it properly?

>>98881827

No, unfortunately. I am willing to chalk this error to a compromise to make the model a more robust gaming piece.

>>98881846

One step forward, two steps back. Next time I think I'll just use plasticard which already has tiles in it, would remove many extra steps from the process.
>>
>>98881870
>>98881897

I intend to run it next to space marines and stargrave minis. Still need to make the main guns into some sort of energy weapons.
>>
>>98881909
>One step forward, two steps back.
Admittedly, you picked a very difficult model to begin with - the shape is extremely recognizable, and the size does not allow much play either. Keep it at it, anon, kitbashing is always a steep learning process.
>>

>>98881870
what is it supposed to be? can you sketch it? can you describe it in a sentence or two? here is a real life uparmored tank. it had an experimental gun which added those tube things on the turret and 5 tons of extra salvaged armor welded onto the front it. I don't even know what your model is supposed to be. why does it have wire fencing stuck to it? why would something that looks like a self propelled aa gun have so much extra armor anyway? it just seems like you had that material lying around and were determined to use it no matter what.
>>
>>98881935

Sci-fi tank destroyer with improvised armour.
>>
>>98881614
>>98881982
I think you should remove the recoilless rifles and replace them with one huge weapon on the side (plasma?) and build around that - it will give you a lot of playing field with greebles like cables, power packs, etc. It would also help to make the vehicle more yours and less recognizable.
>>
>>98882001

Bold idea! What parts would you suggest for that?
>>
>>98881982
why havent you glued the tracks on yet and where did that model even come from
and dont take it so seriously im looking forward to what that thing will look like in the end
>>
>>98882025
He just told you the parts he suggests for that
>>
>>98881982
I'm just going to say it since you can't take the hint. stop gluing random shit to your model. if you aren't going to use the net to make a cope cage or a camo net don't use it at all. look at real life examples of uparmored vehicles and try to copy what they look like. you can change it a little to make it look more sci-fi, but it should still be obvious to anyone looking what it is without you having to explain your vision. you can use thick rectangles of plasticard for applique armor or you can cut it into smaller shapes to look like era bricks. if you want it to look like a tank destroyer give it a big gun that looks like it could destroy a tank. cut a hole in it and make it a casemate gun like the jagdpanther.
>>
>>98882050

I don't mind the critique really. I appreciate that people speak their minds freely here instead of blowing smoke up my ass.
The kit is academy's 1/35 scale m50a1 Ontos. I chose it because if the six barrels and also because it's pretty close to 40k predators and rhinos in size. Haven't glued the tracks on yet because my son insisted that they ought to be done last since they're already black. I should glue them later this week.
>>
>>98881609

>Finish base coating a model
>Lose interest in doing any more

How do I get past that? Basecoating is the most fun part about painting to me, seeing a model go from no color to color is more of a rush than adding tedious layering / highlights / shading.
>>
>>98882335
then do not do what you dont like, and apply basecoats to the next model of your army.
>>
>>98882335
if you don't wanna do more then don't. if you only way to do base colors but you want your models to look better just add more detail colors and do an enamel/oil wash at the end.

If I wanted to affix a dismembered hand to something, would it look like shit if it was a clean cut at about the wrist with no gore or bone poking out? I havnt played FoW since 3rd, but arent most infantry armed the same stuff? I remember almost every base being either a rifle, rifle/MG or MG team and special weapons either went on their own 2-man mini bases or were so distinct you could tell them apart quite easily

Because you are new and everyone is bad at the start. My first minis were not exactly better.

There is nothing wrong with drybrushing over details, if you go all over the model this is pretty much unavoidable. You can pick smaller brush for that but why not just paint over details and just then after you are done with main colour? You can always just pin wash those details again, no point in going all over entire mini.

Some of mentioned first minis so you won't feel too bad - zero highlighting, just some wash and drybrushing that went over details in lots of places.

One day you will take a look at your first, then at your current ones and say "man, that was a journey".

Thanks anon. Should I buy some actual dedicated washes as well? Right now I’m just using regular paint thinned way down.

>>98886457
Yeah you’re probably right about that. I was getting aggravated trying to base coat it since I primed it in black which was really showing through the tan paint so I said fuck it and just slathered it on.
>>
>>98886492
Well, acrylic washes are not exactly just thinned down paint, they usually have additional flow improving stuff in them to better flow into recesses. It's good to have few, nothing too fancy, you probably won't need more than black, dark brown and maybe flesh. About what >>98886482 says about oil washes, you can technically make them out of oil paints and white spirit and while it is quite useful thing to have, I would suggest sticking to acrylic ones for a time being. They require little different approach and dry much slower (2-3 days usually) so they are not for beginners.

not really an oil painter but ive had this can for ages and decided to try it on these flames of war models
gotta say its pretty cool how you can work with it for so long but unfortunately have to wait until the next day to finish and before that you have to matte varnish them too
great results though

>They require little different approach and dry much slower (2-3 days usually) so they are not for beginners.
NTA, but this is one of the worst memes that's currently out there. I'm not attacking you, anon, but this general nonsense. Why are oils/enamels not for beginners? Virtually every single thing about them is much simpler and forgiving to beginners compared to acrylics. And you don't even have to wait 2-3 days. Either buy premade enamel washes, which dry overnight (=they are safe to varnish or work over if you are careful), or mix your own oil washes with drying accelerator medium.

Enamel wash:
>varnish beforehand (it's not needed, but it's a good practice)
>apply either as a pinwash or just slob it over, both is viable - they flow ten times better than acrylics
>swipe away excess. Chill out, you have a long working time, no rush like with acrylics
>messed up anything? Just clean it with solvent. They either don't stain at all, or stain very, very lightly, unlike acrylics
>don't like it in the morning? Just reactivate with solvent and fix it

Virtually the only "downside" or extra step is varnishing. Everything else is not only better, but also simpler than acrylic washes. Not to mention, they also allow you to smooth the edges out for nice transitions, similarly to oil washes/paints. Which is a nice, much faster alternative to acrylic glazing.

Basecoat, all over wash, drybrush again with base color is a good beginner technique so keep practicing. Drybrushing is not as easy as it seems because it’s easy to be too wet which makes it streaky. The best tip is test the brush on the back of your hand to check moisture until you can graduate to checking on just plain old printer paper.

In the mean time, your model is not ruined, just base over it again and keep trying.

Washes can always be thinned further with medium if you want a lighter coat. You can also use water, but I personally hate it, because it's changes how the paint moves and dries.

Same concept, for what it's worth. You can make definitely make washes by thinning your acrylics, but I'd recommend that you use an acrylic medium rather than water.

My first genuine sculpting attempt outside of filling gaps. Took a couple of tries by step one of turning this into a book of stitched flesh is done. Does it look alright so far? I know the stitch direct to the right of the belt looks fucked up but I'm hoping to cover it with the thread once it cures.
I also tried to make some flowers. This is unfortunately the best one I was able to make and it's unusably large. Slightly bigger than a GW skull. I tried to go smaller but it got too difficult to do and I was getting frustrated with it. Green Stuff gets weird when you make it super thin.

unless your criteria for "easy" is "can be done by someone with parkinson's" I don't see how doing something that basically doubles the amount of work needed just to establish your primary color is supposed to be easy or good for beginners.

>Either buy premade enamel washes, which dry overnight (=they are safe to varnish or work over if you are careful), or mix your own oil washes with drying accelerator medium.
Noob here, how should I start or what should I buy exactly?
For acrylic I read that a brown and black wash are enough and so far they were, and easy to get from one of the major brands. What should I be looking at for oils?
>>
>>98888204
the flower looks good. I thought the book was supposed to be teeth though.
>>
>>98888423
for enamels you can start with tamiya panel liners. it comes in black, white, and brown. I don't use oils but I think burnt sienna, raw umber, and lamp black are the basic colors you use.
>>
>>98888425
It has to cure before I can add the stitches. If I could get the flower down to less than half the size I'd use it. Maybe if I get more skilled with the tools I can shape it with them instead of my wet fingers.
>>
>>98888423
>>98888435
I would argue against the Tamiya Panel Liner as your only enamel of choice. They are excellent, but they are also exactly what it says on the tin - panel liners. Dedicated enamel washes are less diluted. As for what to buy, you can't really go wrong with AK enamels - they have an entire wide range of washes, panel liners, thicker enamels like streaking grime for more effects, and dedicated enamel solutions for dirt, grease, etc. You can grab what washes suit your project.

As for oils, you can buy any oil paint you want, really, for as long it's not some bottom of the barrel garbage. Winsor & Newton are alright, including their Winton (student) line. You don't need any fancy artist-grade oils for washes. If you want to go hobby, AK/Abteilung oil paints are great. As for what colors, again it depends on your projects. But the most universal is usually burnt umber, siennas, sap green, and I would add some oranges and reds for rust. White and black are also always good. Contrary to acrylics, oil paints are more or less standardized, so burnt umber from one company should look similar to burnt umber from another company.

Make sure to grab solvent, too. Odorless thinner like sansodor is great (you can get huge ass can from W&N again), white spirit from hobby company like AK is also alright.
>>
>>98888423
Odorless white spirit or mineral spirit is essential, both for enamels and oil paints. You can get this in large bottles either from hobby stores or hardware stores. There's also miniature branded thinners like from AK but they're more expensive per ml

For enamel panel liners, I can recommend AK, don't have personal experience with any other brands. For oils, I'd go with artist grade like Winsor & Newton artist rabge as they have higher quality and finer ground pigments than their student range or whatever it's called. Make sure you don't get water soluble oil paints, they don't work the same way.

Keep your room well ventilated when working with the thinners or you might get brain damage from the vapors.

I'd also recommend checking out some tutorials, MarcoFrisoniNJM works a lot with oils and is a great source for knowledge.

What army are you painting and what color scheme? Whether you should get oils or panel liner depends on your needs honestly, they're both fantastic for different things.
>>
>>98888484
>or you might get brain damage from the vapors.
Stop being silly, anon. Ventilate, yes, but to get brain damage from the solvent you would need to proactively huff that shit (like an actual junkie) in concentrated doses for months nonstop. The amounts you get exposed to when working with models is not even marginal. Ask any oil painter. Hell, look at a single Bob Ross video and watch how he works with it.
>>
>>98888484
aren't you supposed to use enamel thinner or naptha for enamels?
>>
>>98888484
>What army are you painting and what color scheme?
Retro fantasy Chaos dudes, Corsair and Dark Eldar
don't know the scheme yet, likely something red for the space elves, chaos is varied
>>98888435
>>98888477
What's the difference between oil and enamel? I thought these are just two names for the same thing because everyone is saying them at the same time.
Also not gonna lie, but despite the anon above saying these are fine for beginners now I'm supposed to know which one is good for what I'm planning to paint? Compared to the arcrylic wash that I've been told and shown to just slap on whatever.
>>
>>98888495
It is a risk that he should be made aware of. We don't know how often anon paints. It's stupid to not mention it at all when introducing someone to oils and thinners
>>
>>98888513
In that case you should at least get a red oil paint, and a black, so you can mix them up for some nice shading on the red parts of the corsair dudes. Be aware that black is often very dominant when mixing washes, less is more

A black panel liner enamel is probably also a good call, very useful for most armies

Oils are thick out of the tube and you mix them thick or thin as you desire with mineral spirits. Enamels are pre thinned in the bottle and usually applied with a brush that comes attached to the inside of the bottle lid, kinda like tamiya extra thin plastic cement.

Oh another things, it's good practice to gloss varnish your minis before applying enamels and oils. Most acrylics don't react to white spirits (except for Army Painter) but you can still scratch away the underlying paint when removing the excess from oil washes if you're not careful
>>
>>98888513
oil paints are made out of natural oil from the flax plant while enamels are made out of man made shit derived from petroleum. oil paints a thousands of years old technology and they aren't as tough or solvent resistant as enamels. they are mentioned together because they both have long drying times which lets you use them for certain techniques.
>>
>>98888513
>What's the difference between oil and enamel?
Functionally, it's about the same, though there are some small differences - oils can be generally smoothed better, but have a tendency to dry longer, for example. It's very minor and generally more about preference, than anything particularly functional.
>I'm supposed to know which one is good for what I'm planning to paint?
The same way as with acrylics, really. Say you are painting your models yellow, like Imperial Fists or something. You would be using some darker brown wash from GW, something like Agrax I guess. So, just look at what oil paints or pre-mixed enamels you can get that will look similar. Or, check what AK sells - they offer specific pre-mixed enamels like "Wash for Dark Yellow" or "Wash for Green Vehicles", which will tell you. It's also much simpler and saner way of doing things, compared to "GROTGUTT'S SMELLY BALLS SHADE". It's a wash, it doesn't have to be a single perfect color.

>>98888548
No need for gloss, I would argue satin is better. But both are fine, I think we are already drowning anon in information lel.
>>
>>98888524
you should be more worried about oil soaked rags spontaneously combusting than giving yourself brain damage from mineral spirits

I actually found as I was digging around my stuff that I have "Tamiya Panel Line Accent" in black and dark brown plus a bottle of thinner.
So is it the best if I use this stuff kind of like black lining between parts, and not the slobbering the whole mini with it thing?
Do I wait for it to dry and then dab up the spills or unneeded parts with the thinner?

I was planning to get satin/gloss anyway for my minis that wear plate armor. I'll give oil washes a try later I guess. I suppose those are good for terrain too.

I think adding a harsh highlight might sell the rubber look, like a shiny rubber or latex look. Just my opinion. If you want to keep them subdued there's nothing wrong with that

Apart from physically destroying it, there's no such thing. If you leave it, then it's a good source of donor parts and bits for future projects. There's very little that can't be repaired.
Tho anon is right, you should go in with at least somewhat vague idea about what you want to do, not just slap stuff on the model randomly.

no his problem is that he doesn't know what he wants and is just impulsively gluing knick knacks to the model like a child. he keeps asking what to do because he doesn't know himself. he has been told to reference real vehicles but he either refuses to do so or lacks the mental ability to translate it into a plan for his model.

Using varnish for a shine effect could work, but the shine is going to be "out of scale" and looks too big or overtake too much I think. They arent gonna shine like they're gloves worn by a human, they're gonna shine like they're only 5mm long gloves

>>98889744
>NMM look so fucking weird on miniature, man. Why are so many people obsessed with this shit technique?
>>
>>98891730
You should gap fill that ass anon
>>
>>98891509
Then how I'm supposed to do proper highlights that reads as highlighting to you?
>>
>>98891739
Too late for that, I'm afraid.
>>
>>98891739
I would fill that ass too
>>
>>98891747
You could slap some sprue goo on it, feather it out with plastic cement and brush on primer and then normal paints over it. Did that recently myself on a 3d printed mini with a hole on it's head from a support nub that I missed during assembly. Can't tell it was ever there now
>>
>>98891732
personally I think it looks uncanny, especially when you see it in person and expect the reflection to shift but it doesn't.

>>98891744
what is it supposed to look like? what do you imagine the armor being made out of? is it supposed to be matte like some kind of ceramic or plastic? is it supposed to be polished metal? if it's supposed to be a fairly non-reflective material then you have way too many highlights. if it's supposed to be shiny then you are doing the nmm meme. I think maybe you are trying to do volumetric shading, but it's too messy so it doesn't end up looking right. you either should change your technique or stop trying to do it.
>>
>>98891789
This is metal mini, anon. Plus, I would need to strip whole paint with primer and do this again.

>>98891790
It's metal armour so it's supposed to be shiny, yes.

>you either should change your technique or stop trying to do it.
Change to what? I'm not trying to be offensive here, I simply don't get the suggestions. "Stop trying to do it" and what, apply wash and leave it like this? Because it would look so painfully dull and boring that way.

Imagine being told whole time to do layering, highlighting, edge highlighting, etc and then someone comes in and says "no, it looks bad, don't do this at all".
>>
>>98891790
>personally I think it looks uncanny, especially when you see it in person and expect the reflection to shift but it doesn't.
This is my main gripe with it too. Still looks cool though. And some people just simply hate working with metallics and prefer doing NMM. My wife is one of them. One scuffed brush stroke with normal acrylic paint is easy to fix, but with true metallics you've got glitter where it doesn't belong and that can be a huge pain in the ass to fix. I find NMM more annoying cuz of all the glazing it requires but I understand her reasoning
>>
>>98891825
Nah you can just slap it on top of the paintjob. Sprue goo works as a gap filler on easy to access rounded parts like that ass cheek even if it doesn't melt the material underneath like it would on bare plastic. The mini I did this to recently was resin, not plastic
>>
>>98891204
It's a good paint job, but you can watch a hundred videos on youtube about how to paint that exact same style.
>>
>>98891846
I don't think I would try it on her now and not sure about applying it on already painted sections but thanks for the tip, I will keep that in mind next time I run into similar problem.
>>
>>98891825
if you want to do volumetric shading you could try using an airbrush or a sponge. if you want it to look like shiny metal the easiest way would be with a candy metallic paint, or even just multiple layers of gloss clear like how cars are painted. there are a lot of different styles of painting and ways to go about getting something to look like you want. don't feel like you are obligated to follow a certain one just because you think you're supposed to.

>it would look so painfully dull and boring that way.
like I have been saying the in progress versions with the plain blue armor look good. they aren't boring because they have good contrast with the black, white, and red details. don't think it looks bad just because you aren't following the space marine playbook.
>>
>>98891838
NMM feels like it exists as a difficult technique just to win awards

>>98891470

I usually dont do this, but there is a very interesting sale for Scale75 stuff going on at Games Island, so let me shill for them a bit:
https://games-island.eu/c/SUPER-SALE::m/Scale-75#ftr-tp

Apparently they are clearing out the entire range, and both acrilic pots as well as tubes of oil paint is available for around 1€ per individual paint, and 7,50 for sets of 9 paints. Oils are also just around 1€ each.

I think at least two people in here seem to like Scale75, so maybe thats interesting for some.
>>
>>98891939
Airbrush and candy coating is something for bigger models, I don't think it would work at this small scale. I'm not precise enough with airbrush to paint such small details either.

A few years back, I sent a Santa package to Japan from the US and the shipping cost about 70USD. I can't imagine how much overseas shipping alone is going to cost right now with all the trade wars and fuel supply problems.
>>
>>98892487
I remember feeling the sting sending Christmas gifts to our lad in Beckenham. There's a four pound limit for First Class International, and last time I looked, postage for that was just shy of $60US.

I'm going to do my best to match anons to their own continents and countries unless they specifically asked otherwise - maybe for some, the extra postage isn't such a big deal?

Yeah, expense is relative of course. I've done overseas Santa every time I've joined in but I'm doing domestic this year. I'll probably resume foreign gifting if someone ever finds the brakes on the crazy train.
Unrelated to SS, of course, I added some static grass. I kind of don't want to add too much and lose all that dirt texture from when I put the thing together while stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Maybe a little bit more. Dead grass is a little bit too pale. Not sure if I could stain static grass with a plastic coloring dye to get a darker shade. I have a huge tub of the stuff I got for cheap ages ago

but as a mini, its just boring. literally the retail calgar, its just boring. painting it as super real just kind of makes it even more boring. its technically proficient but ultimately lacking creativity and soul. the art world went through this exact era, i'm just hoping it will pass.

>>
>>98893617
painting contest, the one that the judge likes the most basically.
>>
>>98893760
so then the answer to the nmm question is that people are incentivized to do it by the judges since nmm will score more points even if the end result is equal?
>>

Contests are meant to show how good you are, so doing harder things gives more points.

Harsh edge highlighting aside, I like the flames, they have a nice warm glow to it

idk if you were judging a wood carving contest would you give extra points for someone who used a spoon instead of a chisel? you should be scored on the end result, not how much work it took you to get there.

No, because that's just using suboptimal tools, not doing a difficult technique.
>>
>>98894045
if you could achieve a comparable result with an easier technique should you still get more points for doing it the hard way? are techniques not just tools that you learn so doing something the hard way when there was an easier option is basically using a suboptimal tool?

Funniest part about this is I typically don't even use NMM, I prefer using metallic paints because it's easier when I'm painting an army, but if I'm doing a project I'll use NMM to get better depth.

Again, this is just really sad anon, its just a painting technique. Just because you can't do it well doesn't mean its shit.
