do Mario sets have stickers? What about Minecraft, too?
I don't think they do, but I'm not sure.

it's about audience expectations or something. they expect the person buying an Animal Crossing set is not going to want to bother with stickers and get turned-off if they have to use them (what? stickers? F-this! I'm not buying any more of those!)

meanwhile, Star Wars knows they can get away with it and so... they do?
>>

have you ever tried sticking on a sticker?
it's the autistic person's nightmare
it will NEVER be centered
NEVER

you try and stick it, careful only to use one corner to check.... oh no! it's too far to that side!... try and unpeel it, quick! AH! it folded! let's flip up the corner... just need to get my fingernail under there... AH! now it's got a tiny fold in the corner!!!
NOOOOO!!!! My $1000 set is ruined because I f'ed up the sticker!!! (cries tears over it)

--too far to one side
--crooked
--not aligned at 90 degree angles (those round tiles are the worst!!)
--they much did I pay for this??!!! argh

Stickers are shit when it's an 18+ display set.
I can design all the stickers I want and print them via some online service. I don't need to pay a premium price for something that contains generic pieces and all specialty decors, logos and such are done with stickers.

that.
no matter how much "real Lego artist" design goes into the art on the sticker, it still FEELS like
"I could just do that myself!"

nobody has the resources at home to print on a brick, but we all have (well... used to have? okay I'll use the one at work) printers at home, and Office Max or whatever sells sticker paper

I don't know why it's not somebody's booming business yet, selling stickers meant for Lego sets

Because they get worn down to literal dust. They crack, flake, peel off, bleach out, yellow, get scratched up, collect permanent dust particles on the sides and curl up extremely fast. A set that has all prints instead of stickers can be enjoyed as it is even after decades of play.

I have 25+ year old sets with pristine stickers. This only happens if you don't take care of your sets

There are two main flaws with the set, that it looks a bit plain and that it uses interior space inefficiently. The first one you can fix with superficial modifications. The second one would be harder. The problem is that the gate extends too far into the centre of the main tower so there isn't space for much else. The smaller tower contains about twice as much content despite being half the volume. If you look at the back of the box image you can see how other than the dungeon, almost everything in that tower is an empty room with maybe a weapon rack because there isn't space to fit anything else. If you want to fix that you could use extra parts to make the tower wider, or you could do what an Anon here did and rebuild a new design for the entire set.
Other than those two problems it's a great set.

I hate licenceslop so much. It might have saved lego financially but it killed it spiritually. What kind of creative play can kids do with licenceshit? Just endlessly recreate movies? This is why the generic themes are the best, like pirates, castle, city, western etc.

Generic theme sets are the best because it fosters imagination and creative play. People who suggest to get the lotr displays instead of an castle actually disgust me.

The only license from Lego I can somewhat acknowledge is the goofy star wars shit like black falcon because it's based on sw but it's a new thing with new possibilities not set in stone.

This is such a retarded cope. Most people who bring that up don't seem to have an idea what inflation even is. They just put a number in calculator and think it's as if money ages like milk. The average inflation rate is calculated over all kinds of prices in all kinds of different infustries that are largely unrelated and have completely different developments with regards to value and costs. It should be compared to the median income or prices of other toylines where products remain largely unchanged.

explain then:
Lego sets from decades ago cost about 10 cents per piece. roughly 500 pieces = $50

that's still true today. Lego uses smaller pieces to "inflate" the piece count, is THAT the inflation?

as recent as 7 years ago, I could get a Whopper Combo at Burger King for $5 on Whopper Wednesday. a Whopper Combo at Burger King today costs like $13

that sounds a lot more complicated then just looking at one average number and applying that to "everything"
>>
>>11555393
>you could build this thing with less than half the pieces
Basically every modern Lego set. The 1966 Batmobile was like $30. The 1989 Batmobile is $60 because you need to build fucking engines and other shit you will never see unless you take it apart.
>>
>>11555586
Oh, is this an old-brown vs nu-brown issue? If that's the case I still think just recreating it with the same pieces but in nu-brown should be straightforward. And if some of those curved pieces are slightly pricier, I doubt its by all that much, and there are only a couple of them.

Either way, it's not like it's impossible to get this ATT version. Especially since there are no unique prints and battle droids are cheap.

>>11555581
I had this original ATT growing up. I don't even care that it was boxy or the colors were all over the place. The set was absolute kino, and I loved how the back half could form a mobile command center
>>
>>11555588
NTA but there are multiple factors that affect price change:
>inflation of money supply (affects all companies)
>practice of particular company (lego) price gouging just because they can get away with it since they have a semi-monopoly
>supply chain and geopolitical things like covid, petrol prices, real estate, etc (affects all companies, some more than others)
1 and 3 are reasonable causes for Lego to become more expensive. 2 is not. Looking at inflation as an economy-wide average takes 1 and 3 into account to a degree but not 2, so you can isolate an estimate for how much is changed by 2. I guess there is also progress of manufacturing technology and outsourcing of manufacturing, but I don't know that that has changed much for Lego over only a few years.
>>
>>11555584
Oh no, I've been exposed as an ESL. My cover is blown!

>>11555588
>Lego sets from decades ago cost about 10 cents per piece
>that's still true today
lol wat? Fuck no it isn't. And even still, ehat you day about pieces size is still true. A set from 20 years ago would use a ton of huge plate pieces. Nowadays it's almost exclusively 1x1s and 1x2s. So how about we calculated with grams per cent? Oh, whoops, now the prices seem even more inflated.
>as recent as 7 years ago, I could get a Whopper Combo at Burger King for $5 on Whopper Wednesday. a Whopper Combo at Burger King today costs like $13
Wow, it's almost like money ages like milk.
To not be as condescending I'll admit that factors like logistics, new factories, price of plastic, etc., also affect the price of Lego rising or falling but it's still minor conpared to the inflation rate of a currency.
>>
>>11555588
>>11555611
As for the constant $0.10 PPP, some reasons are:
>manufacturing technology got more advanced and thus more efficient
>business practices became more efficient (see the bankruptcy scare)
>the company got more efficient as it scaled up
>Lego outsourced to Mexico and then China
>Lego changed to cheaper manufacturing methods that dropped the part quality (quicker mold cooling time, different dyeing method)
>decreasing average piece size due to more detailed set design makes PPP a bad metric for such comparisons over time
All these happened at various times and roughly countered general inflation.
>>
>>11555606
>Oh, is this an old-brown vs nu-brown issue?
No, 7662 was nu-brown but some of the parts look pretty uncommon in that colour (fighter canopies, 72 degree slope corners, maybe the top curved pieces). Even for basic parts, nu-brown tends to be a bit more expensive than other colours because it's more useful and less common than, say, white or yellow.
>>
based on inflation, 2017 falcon should be $1k, but it was 7.5k pcs vs 9k, so it wouldn't be $1k. it should cost the same as in 2017 then.
>>
>>11554464
Lego probably missed the window for this one, a few years ago this would have been impossible to keep in stock.

--car has a name: Baby
--it's been in every episode, practically a full cast member
--Supernatural was on the air for 15 seasons! and had (has?) a huge cult following
--they did a whole episode from the point of view of the car, even involving the car scoring with babes and killing monsters
--Baby + the two main characters Sam & Dean, would be "the whole show in one set" so even if it was on a few years ago, it would probably sell very well to the fans who remember it fondly (it ended well enough not to ruin it)

--QR code in instruction book plays music "carry on my wayward son" while you build it? epic. if they put that QR code on the box? every fan who tries it will instantly buy it.

Adults are the driving force behind this slop. No kid today cares about star wars or harry potter, and if you think otherwise you are delusional. Yes, at the point when they were introduced kids liked them, but now it's only autistic adults buying them (example above)
>>
>>11555653

>>11555653
>Of course you can image it but it's still limiting them in a way
A blank lego figure is also "limiting them in a way". By that logic the best option would be Lego selling boxes so kids can imagine literally anything they want and they aren't limited.

I don't even know who the market for harry potter sets is in 2025. kids don't give a fuck about that franchise anymore, and the kind of adults that would be buying children's toys based off it are too busy being mad about politics to support it as an IP. I'm not stupid, I know there are adults that just wanna be nostalgic for a book/movie they liked as a kid and don't care about online twitter wars, but that has to be a smaller demographic than the kind of terminally online stans that would prop up harry potter as the third pillar for lego they treat it as.

there's no tan trenchcoat torso for Castiel (yet?)
but you could probably just make the whole thing yourself

Lego is not going to do more than 2 minifigs for these IP Speed Champions, no need to get greedy thinking they'd do a whole cast. realistically Baby would only need Dean, and that would be it, but including at least Sam would make it better by a lot, too.

the show deals with demons, you really think Lego would do a giant pentagram demon trap in the trunk? it would be a sticker, sure, but it's totally a pentagram so...

Appreciate it. I stopped playing with legos around 2003 or so, and back then they really didn't have joint pieces strong enough to make proper mechs. As a kid I would try to make things based on zoids or gundam or whatever else, but the best I had were those ratched pieces, which would just flop over from any bit of weight. I just got back into fucking around with legos a few months back, so I wanted to accomplish what I could never do as a kid. I'll probably take a break for now, but when I come back I'll think I'll take a stab at something with landscape and scenery

This is wrong on several fronts.
First of all, Harry Potter is an evergreen Lego IP - just like Star Wars, it has proven itself to be consistently popular enough to warrant constant refreshing. I bought my first Harry Potter sets fifteen years ago, and they're still designing new sets based off the original films.
Secondly, Harry Potter is one of the biggest media franchises of all time. The people who care about politics are the ACTUAL small demographic - there are thousands of customers potentially interested in purchasing Lego HP who don't know or don't care.
Third, children like whatever they're exposed to. Harry Potter (both the books and films) are among the most beloved pieces of children / young adult entertainment ever made and will remain so for at least another couple of generations. I remember seeing similar concerns about Sonic The Hedgehog becoming a full theme due to Sonic's waning relevance and shit games, but it turns out that releasing sets to coincide with a popular film (Sonic 2) is a boon for sales, and some kids properties always remain fashionable enough to make toys for.

Harry Potter has weaseled its way into the culture like Star Wars has, it's the "fantasy-magic" version of "fantasy-space"

fresh kids are introduced into it. it's not like new kids can't or don't read books. they do, and it's still Harry Potter

not enough credit is given to the amazing art team who crafted the "look" of the movies, everything is as perfect as the early Star Wars, from a design standpoint.

but... I lmoa every time I see "Harry Potter" I can't imagine how much MORE timeless or classic the whole thing could have been if it had a better NAME to the series. like, imagine if Star Wars was called "Luke Skywalker and the Star of Death" and instead of Star Wars we all would say Luke Skywalker. nope, we are stuck with "Harry Potter" (lame!)

The prose is astonishingly bad in many places even by the standards of young adult fiction, but there is clearly a reason why it became a phenomenon - the core concept is incredibly clever.
It's easy to forget now with the flood of easy-reading urban fantasy slop Harry Potter inspired, but HP itself was the book series that took the tropes of medieval high fantasy and applied them to a modern British setting, reflecting many of the contemporary problems of a 90s Britain wracked by austerity.
Combine this concept with a protagonist with shitty circumstances who you want to see succeed, and Rowling's surprising talent at worldbuilding (despite her prose being pretty bad), it's definitely something you should read at least once.

tbqh I never really cared about the newer boxes being boring. I get the complaint, but I'm not the type of guy who keeps boxes. They're something I see for a few minutes before tearing it open and dumping out the legos.

Any interest I would've had in boxes died 20 years ago when lego stopped showing cool stuff like alt builds on the back/sides of the box.

Watching RotJ and I'm starting to see why this isn't as highly regarded as the other movies, the Jabbas palace arc has some cringe in it. weird how everyone's just sleeping in this small as hell chamber.
>>11556136
Not that Anon but I've never watched past the third movie, I could tell there was a change in mood (and general art direction) afterward and didn't want to see the campy fun get all grim
>>
>>11556172
I always interpreted it as Jabba constantly throwing raves 24/7 in his crib, and all his homies and sex slaves just crash on the floor wherever/whenever they pass out.

Honestly I've always liked ROTJ. The complaints are valid, but vietcong ewoks taking out stormtroopers using rocks and logs is kino. The only big complaint I've always had about ROTJ is how boba fett goes out like an absolute bitch.

First off, you meant "KOTOR 2 set", don't constantly drag down the greatest Star Wars (actual) RPG ever made by tying it to its inferior and banal sequel. Second, if I never have to hear mention of the shittiest DMPC ever written ever again, it'll still be a thousand years too soon.

This always confuses me because OT are very good compared to even the prequel trilogy.
Everyone used to think they were going to be good because Lucas had a hand in them, but in some regards they are actually worse than the sequel slop.
Not one single person gave a flying fuck about the republic politics and 9 hours of horrendous dialog and cgi.

Space marines were ruined by that primaris taumarine shit, the new aesthetic design of chaos marines sucks (to say nothing of the monopose kits), I haven't so much as looked at any new Imperial Guard kits since I saw that they released a new Sentinel and it was taued up to a fucking primaris level, and apparently they not only appeased the "muh squats" reddit faggotry but did it in the gayest way possible. And even if we ignore all of that, I'd be giving money to a company that has explicitly stated that they fucking hate me and consider me not welcome to the hobby. At least with Lego I'm only giving money to a company that (mostly) only wants to rip me off the old-fashioned monetary way.

"They" (whoever is in charge of it) tried for a hot minute to give Harry Potter a new, more-cooler (?) name, so they weren't stuck with including actual guy Harry Potter in all of the things in um... Harry Potter.

'Cause if the thing is called Harry Potter, you can't NOT have Harry Potter in it. D'oh!

the fact that "Wizarding World" didn't stick makes me laugh harder. they tried "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" and that was lame, too.

Lego is cowards for not switching ALL minigfigs to "fleshies"

seeing minority-coded yellow minigfigs is ridiculous. they knew they couldn't "get away with it" with a yellow Lando, why do they think they can "get away with it" at all?

I know the reasoning is that IT DOESN"T MATTER, deep down we are all the same, so let's make it yellow! (which is honestly a great message.) I'm just tossing out the truth, that it doesn't look that way.

why didn't they make a yellow Lando???
>>
>>11555714
Comfy
>>
>>11556393
>why didn't they make a yellow Lando???
Because Lego is retarded. That and the basketball figs being black and fleshie was a fucking mistake because then it added RACE to Lego. Before they were literally universal, no gender, no race and it was the accessories and clothing prints that added the personality and gender to the figure.
>>
>>11556375
maybe they should have named the movie "Fantastic Beasts And Were To Find Them - A Harry Potter Universe Story"
>>
>>11556393
they could've gotten away with a yellow lando back in 2003 if they doubled down on legomen not having race, which is why they're yellow
people would've bitched for a little bit but it would've blown over after a month or two, saving us from the fleshie menace

>>
>>11556188
"banal sequel", nice bait.
>>
>>11556487
I'm assuming the reason why they do stuff like that is because it's the only way for them to hit their "diversity" quotas. Star wars (at pre-disney) was before forced diversity was a thing. There are of course brownoids and women as main characters, but overall the majority of named characters are white men. So since those main characters are fixed as they are, lego can't add diversity through the main characters the way they can add vitiligo and wheelchair minifigs in city sets. So that leaves the only option for shoving in browns/women as the nameless/faceless mooks. Even if it's nonsensical since we've never seen anything about female stormtroopers whatsoever.

>>
>>11556393
LEGO is cowardly for not switching all minifigures to flesh tones. Seeing yellow figures coded as minorities just looks awkward. They knew they couldn’t make Lando yellow, so why do they think it works anywhere else? I get the original idea—that yellow represents everyone equally, since deep down we’re all the same—and that’s a great message in theory. But in practice, it doesn’t actually read that way. So why didn’t they just make Lando yellow if they truly believed in it?

It was a slow decline. This was fated to happen once lego started moving away from characters all just having smiley faces. Even in the 90s, almost all characters were still just the simple smiley but with extra detail. Pirates were smiley faces but with beards and an eye patch. Spacemen were smiley faces but with a headset. Islanders were smiley faces with facepaint. Wild west was smiley faces with handlebar moustaches. I think the first domino to fall was when they made the indian subtheme and their faces looked very different and hyper detailed relative to the rest of 90s lego.

Even without the lando issue, this probably would've happened eventually, because the more detailed you make the faces, the more you can tell their ethnicity. And if they just made them all look normal, then it opens up the can of worms of "why are all the yellow minifigs white-coded I want muh representation" and then its all over from there.

And there's no way they could've gotten away with the NBA set without flesh tones. But really they should just never have even gone with that licensed concept in the first place.

Even if trek were more popular, I would seriously doubt that. Star wars is much easier to design playsets for because of the heavy emphasis on small-scale ships. With Trek the emphasis is on these massive capital ships that are also hard to shape with bricks. I guess you could do interior dioramas of various setpieces like the bridge or engineering or transporter room.

Lego might as well NOT be doing Star Trek.

it's so frustrating that the entry cost is locked behind a literal work of art. by that I mean a high price display piece (not implying exceptional quality.)

can I get a couple of Star Trek character torsos? so I can make my own sets? My own characters? only if you pay $400 suckah!

Since the $400 Enterprise WILL sell at warp speed, it will cement the idea that every-Trek-set-ever will be that expensive. it's what they were hoping they'd get with the Zelda Tree (but the Zelda fans are not rich science job nerds with expendable income like the Trek fans are)
