Are Mikr Mir kits any good? I'm wondering if pic related is better than the Hasegawa/Revell kit.

>>11210716Extremely experienced, also not the first Arma kit I've done. It is however the first (literally had to look it up) Kovozavody Prostejov kit I've ever built and I will say this is DEFINITELY not something you'd want to make as a noob. I bought the La-5FN but the parts for a normal La-5 and what I think may even be a La-7 is in the same kit, but the parts are not numbered at all. Instead you have to look at this guide in the manual to figure out what is what. The order of assembly is also all sorts of fucked so if anyone is thinking about trying something from these guys, please be ready to improvise. On the other hand I kinda like that all the first steps of the instruction are just how to paint the small parts
>>11210074really kit dependent, trumpeter is very inconsistent in their quality
>>11211208Nah, the quality of Trumpeter with regards to manufacturing quality I find pretty consistent. Inconsistent quality is Revell, even within the same kit. Trumpeter has some accuracy errors built into most kits that become pretty annoying as soon as you actually look at them more closely.
>>11211288I know the access to the general "boomer cars" subject is restricted to those brands, but it is infinite confusion to me why people keep subjecting themselves to AMT and old Revell especially when they then go complain about how shit the experience was

>>11210074>>11211288This is what I've noticed too. Enjoyable build as in everything fits fairly nicely, but little details that are wrong, ignored, or out of scale. Sort of makes a fun game out of correcting them if you enjoy that.

Because mine cost $15.Sure, MAYBE they're not "the best" on the market, but any one of the tank kits you named probably cost almost as much as what I paid for all of these kits COMBINED.>>11204856Actually, the Atlantis Type 97 Chi-Ha Japanese tank is 1/48. I thought it was 1/35 when I got it but it looks like a decent weekend project kit and prime material for practicing camo.>>11206796Oh yeah, it'll be some time before I get to that one but I'll post pics for sure.
>>11206751Based on what I read online the hobby-boss t-35 seemed way better than the zvezda t-35Have you built both?
I wanna dip my toes in scale modeling. What are some good beginner kits??
>>11211730Tamiya 1/35 Panzer II Ausf F/G
>>11211730You can't really go wrong with anything from Tamiya.I'd suggest starting with one of the 1/48 ground vehicle kits. The M8 Howitzer Motor Carriage usually is about $20 USD after taxes and it assembles into a tidy little package with working turret swivel and elevation, as well as a little commander figure.Avoid Revell unless it's a snap-tite, because those are piss easy kits meant for kids.
>>11211730Airfix kits are also very good for this. Please don't expect super good results on your first model, if you have been browsing in other places you see a lot of dickheads posting their "first model" when it's obvious it's anything but. Shits hard but you get better quick if you want to.
>>11211777>Avoid Revell unless it's a snap-tite, because those are piss easy kits meant for kids. When I was a kid, Revell didn't have any snappy-tighty shit or whatever newfangled stuff you mean. And we STILL built those models. In fact, as a kid I at least had steady hands.
>You can't really go wrong with anything from Tamiya.apparently except their sea harrier
>>11211334Some of us are masochists and the bad experience is part of the fun.t. currently struggling with the AMT Autocar 9964B haven't decided how I want to paint it yet, but I think this will be the model where I learn how to weather and do chipping. I want to make it look like an old and abused piece of equipment
>>11211777>Avoid Revell unless it's a snap-titeYou should avoid Revell snap-tites because they're terrible; awful quality and fit for snap kits. Most are decades old Monogram molds and getting a decent modern snap-tite is a lottery unless you check Scalemates first (what newbie even knows what a Scalemates is?). Revell and American brands are the worst entry points for starters, no wonder scale modelling is so dead in that country because beginners get recommended these awful pieces of shit as their first model.
>>11211729I've only built the one from zvezda. Not great, not terrible. I also did a bit of research back in the day and it seemed to me that they were pretty much toe-to-toe. Nonetheless, zvezda beats hobby boss when it comes to the details on the back of the hull

>>11211730You should pick a subject you care about so you’ll go in with strong motivation to do a good job. Obviously your first work will not be your best, but don’t go in with that mindset.Tamiya kits are beginner friendly as in everything fits well so you won’t have to fill and sand gaps. You don’t have to limit yourself to them though. I also like Hasegawa and Trumpeter. Italeri, Revell, and Airfix can be good but kit dependent. If you’re worried you can always search online and read about the kit you’re interested. And if the build is a little more difficult you’ll just develop more skills.Only hard avoids imo would be old Airfix airliners or boomer era car kits

Just cracked open the Tamiya Churchill Crocodile to take stock of the contents and...well, it's the first time I've seen instructions telling the modeler they need to scratchbuild their own parts. Specifically, the tank doesn't have its antenna and so you're told to melt styrene runners and stretch them - but it doesn't say how LONG - and to make the pair of wires that way.Lol no. I get the molding dates back to the 1970s or something, but I see no reason to have to do things the old, hard way, for something that looks like shit, when modern alternatives exist with more detail. Specifically, the kit has no accommodations for the base of the antenna, while all the detail add-on kits have multiple options for the bases. Just curious if anybody here knows the best choice for a "No. 19 Aerial Radio" as that looks to be the correct equipment for a Churchill.
>>11213442In 1970's people were not hapless lost dipshits so they would know that you can calculate a length of an antenna from its frequency.
>>11211730Anything full-interior by MiniArt
>>11213442>stretching sprue is hardNot sure if troll or actually retarded
>>11213435Yeah, while WP vehicles are mostly covered by now by decent, modern kits, there's a chronic lack of WP figures. The differences between uniforms, whether infantry, whether tank crew means that you can't just slightly rework Soviet figures if you want to use them for WP-satellite vehicles, it won't work.
>>11211192One of my cats stole the fucking cockpit floor I had painted and I can't find it anywhere in the apartment, suddenly I appreciate immensely that there's duplicates of almost every part (even if they're not model/variant accurate)

As I stated in the part of the post you probably didn't read, the kit simply doesn't have the proper base structures for the antenna, either, just holes to stick stretched sprue into.
>>11211208>>11210074i had a 1/144 F-117 Nighthawk that has bad flashing and sink mark on the exhaust panels. i always assume Trumpeter is the chinkshit of scale models and you rather go for Hobby Boss or Meng if you want better quality kits.
>>11214328>Hobby Bosshobby boss is just trumpeter with a different box
The kozzajbjabjbdhbd zomzosihndhd or whatever they're called La-5 is basically assembled now. It has weird fitment issues that I've never really seen before, it's like every sharp corner part goes into a dull corner on the other part or something. Lots of small filling is going to be needed but I haven't got to that yet. The decals SUCK. The clear layer is misaligned completely with the decals because for some reason these idiots don't print the whole sheet with clear? Weird choice. So far I'd lean towards "don't buy unless subject only exists made by these guys".>>11213429Mind if it's just a subject that was made in an extremely limited run and then never seen again? The F-15 ACTIVE. Hasegawa only made a few hundred kits and they are STUPIDLY expensive now. Other than that I'd love to see more "what if" kits like the weird concept jet fighters from the Cold War that never made it to prototypes. Additionally I'd like far more options when it comes to modern day race cars. There's not a lot to choose from and they never come out while the car is still relevant anymore.
>>11214011>like how hard is it to make a resin kit for the KPVMig's Syrian T-55 conversion kit, with a North-Korean rangefinder. This kit is getting close to twenty years old though.

Why do enamel paints have SO MUCH more overspray than the lacquers I'm usually using? I had to use some of the testors enamel I had instead of my usual mr color lacquers because I didn't have the color I needed, and the filter in my booth is completely saturated with that color now. A bunch of it even went out the exhaust, so the fans are dusted in red and the screen on the window the tube is in was too. I've painted a lot more with lacquers and it only barely discolors the filter. also how do I stop being a brain dead retard and spilling paint everywhere

>>11215145Aoshima is pretty good, I've built a few of their more recent car kits and all have been a nice experience desu>>11215120tl;dr enamels spray finer particles (therefore the usually better result too) and you have to reduce your pressures to compensate if you don't want as much paint to come out
>>11215120you could use edible paint, then just lick up any mess
>>11214636HobbyBoss is the same quality as Trumpeter. For example The HobbyBoss MiG-31 in 1/48 is basically the Trumpeter 1/72 one scaled up. The kits have the same look and feel.
>>112164921:72 scaled up to 1:48 is not the same quality. I just started building the HB 1:35 Type-59-II, and so far it seems to be inferior in some places to the Trumpeter T-62 I did a while back.
>>11216492Their Msta-S is just like the trumpeter oversimplified new wave of 1/72 tanks, basic things missing like brush guards and the ability to position the gun at an angle that is not 0And they have the gall to sell this dogshit for more money than the zvezda one
picked up a bunch of old kits for relatively cheap, including this LTD Lagg 3. This is the first time I've come across this style of plastic for the canopy. Looks pretty cheap and flimsy lol. It seems like the actual part itself isn't yellowed like the rest of the plastic thankfully. The rest of the kit is not great. lots and lots of sanding and trimming will be required to get it to fit together. I'm up for a good challenge though, even as a relative newfag.
at this rate, I'm going to become one of those boomers with shelves upon shelves of kits they will never actually build (I want to actually build all of these though, no matter how shit they are)I'm currently working on an AMT Autocar DC9964 dump truck. >>11221879No. Get a mask that can use replaceable organic vapor cartridges. If you can smell paint your mask isn't worn properly or your cartridges need to be replaced. Store the cartridges in an air tight box with desiccants and they'll last a very long time.
>>11221894Eh, good point. Looks like they are cheaper than I had expected and I don't think cheaping out on my health is a good idea either way
Looking pretty alright I'd say. Not gonna blow anyones tits off but only a little bit of extra weathering and antennas to go I think
Clearly I'm doing something wrong here. How do I fill this gap with the vallejo putty I'm using? Every time I had seen anyone else use it, they can just wipe up the excess with a wet cotton swab or something, but when I do it it just pulls half of it out. If I don't, and just leave it, it shrinks and still leaves a gap, and when I try to sand it, it just pulls it all off in clumps. Do I just have to wait 35 years for this stuff to fully dry, cure, harden, go through puberty, graduate college, and get married? Theres a lot of fitment issues on this AMT kit (who would have figured???) and therefore lots of gaps to fill. Getting quite annoying. I'm about to go get some bondo because at least I know how that stuff works on real cars
>>11208859Is this where to ask about model train sets? I want one with real smoke for the christmas tree but wasmt sure if the 200 dollar range was worth it for something i would use 1 month a year or less, over several years. Where should i search for reccomendations?
>>11222382I think you're using too much putty. You don't want to fill wide gaps with putty, especially if you don't have something to back it up. You're better off filling that gap with plastic (either strips or stretched sprue) and sanding it pretty flush, and THEN using putty. You can also use epoxy putty, but I've personally never had much luck with that. Finally, you could use CA glue + baking soda. Do it in several applications
>>11222421Thank God for model trains. Without model trains, they never would have gotten the idea for the big trains.
I've never built a model before, outside of one for the Titanic I 2/3rds completed with my grandfather as a kid.Would pic related make an alright beginner kit?https://www.scalemates.com/kits/miniart-37069-t-34-85-czechoslovak-prod-early-type--1290957/marketplaceI recently found out the PLO had a lot of T-34/85s in Lebanon, and this kit covers that, with one of the few color photos of said T-34/85s I've been able to find used as reference on the cover and as a decal,https://palarchive.org/index.php/Detail/objects/128959/lang/en_US
>>11222421there used to be a /train/ general
>>11222382you must use some material to fill the gap withscrape down a bit of sprue and mix the shavings with CA glue, the thicker one; fill the gap with that, without having excess protrude much over the edgeonly then use the putty to smooth out the surface
>>11222452>>11222841I'll keep that in mind for next time... It was not so much a gap I was trying to fill and more of a panel misalignment I was trying fix the wrong way instead of spending millennia sanding it smooth. I decided to give up on it and instead will be attempting to cover it up with some rust or something.First time trying any sort of weathering, went with the hairspray method. I wish I had put down a bigger and heavier coat of brown before the steel color. Even though theres more of the black primer showing than the brown, I'm still incredibly pleased with the results. I can always touch it up later with the oil paints and stuff I just bought too, for extra rusty effect.I'm not sure what I should do to the chassis for a similar shitty old truck effect, and I've got plenty of ideas for the cab and interior.
>>11222786>alright beginner kit?No, miniart is filled to the brim with very small, delicate details a lot of which require additional sanding to make them fit and this one comes with an interior Good beginner tank kits are Tamiya in 1/35 and 1/48, zvezda T-34s/SU in 1/35 and select few Revell kits in 1/72 like their panzer 4 and panther Unfortunately, neither Tamiya, nor Zvezda offer this particular version, but you will save a lot and not be left with a half-finished 1000+ part monstrosity

Don't think I'll be buying any more Kovozavody Prostejov model kits in the future, while the parts weren't too terrible, the building experience with a totally useless manual and unnumbered sprues with several near identical parts was a pain in the fucking ass. I think I built an Eduard kit of this plane too a few years back and I don't remember it being a pain like this so get that if you want an La-5FN. >>11208859decided to take a break from mikasa after a sorry attempt at drybrushing the wheelhouse and some difficulties setting the superstructure to do one of these little guys that came in today as part of a unreasonably large shopping spree for tiny planes and obscure auxiliary ships for getting into dioramas. really thought painting minis would translate better into scale modelling but a lot of stuff i tried didn't work all that well. how important is having an airbrush?
>>11224411and here is work on mikasa. tried a couple different can primers on different parts since i already fucked up the hull primer. photo etch went better than expected but i'm really not used to painting sub assemblies
Is there any hope at all for hand brushing with Mr Color lacquers? I'm already neck deep into the Mr Color ecosystem, and while they all work great for airbrushing there have been lots of situations and areas where using one would be too hard for me, so I'd like to just use a hand brush. However, unless I'm painting very small details and parts I absolutely cannot figure out how to get satisfactory results. I even bought a bottle of Mr Color retarder to see if that would help, which it doesn't seem to. I don't know why I even bought all this shit instead of going with Tamiya, other than my local hobby shop having pretty much every color they sell, and struggling to find Tamiya equivalents of what my models were calling for. I could just go buy all duplicate colors, but in Tamiya, but that would be expensive and kind of silly. Unless I just need to work on my patience and wait a very long time between coats, it always ends up just reactivating and getting pulled up by the brush. Also, I can't get the brush strokes to not show up even with leveling thinner. Worth noting I'm still a complete newfag to all thisMaybe I can should get the more common generic colors from Tamiya? Things like flat/semigloss/regular black.
>>11224883why would you buy tamiya for brush painting? is this a weeb thing?
>>11224886They're just the golden child of model stuff and get a lot of praise on all fronts. I wanted to get Vallejo paints initially, because I had heard those were super easy to use and could be thinned with water, but I was too dumb to figure out what their equivalent colors were for what the models I had at the time were calling for. I did get a few from them, namely the metallic aluminium and steel colors, which so far have been fantastic to brush paint with. My only other experience with other paints has been with Testors/Model Master paint over a decade ago, and back then I was a literal child who just painted straight out of the pot with 0 thinner.
>>11224887tamiya paints get dumped on by everyone when it comes to brush painting mate.>vallejo if you're doing military stuff and want usn glossy sea blue or whatever, vallejo model air seems to have a better selection than model color
I was hoping the shark mouth and eyes were just decals, but they are parts, shit
>>11224883Mr. Color lacquers are very good for airbrushing, not so much for brushing. For brush painting smaller details I use either water based acrylics like Revell Aqua color (which is not great not terrible) or Vallejo model color (e. g. for figures). I also sometimes use Revell enamels (only because I still have a bunch, I don't buy new ones). Alcohol based acrylics like Tamiya or Mr. Hobby are also not optimal for brushpainting because when you go over a spot a second time you invariably dissolve the first layer of paint. My opinion is you need different paints ready for different purposes just as you have different types of glues. Others might disagree, just my experience.
need a rec for just a pack of brushes in the uk. Just need something that's not push broom bristles cheap.
>>11225010>My opinion is you need different paints ready for different purposes just as you have different types of glues. Others might disagree, just my experience.I never really thought of it that way but it does make a lot of sense. I don't know why but I had this mindset that I had to stick with one type of paint, but it comes down to having the right tool for the job.I'll go pick up what I need this weekend and hopefully it'll be smoother sailing from there on

>>11225701You could do something right now. Instead of shitposting. I always make sure to do a little something each day. Even if it is just sanding something, gluing something or painting one piece. That way you get at least some output. Just crack open a box and start.
>>11224886>>11224891You can brush paint with tamiya and a retarder, easily on small sections but doable on larger parts
>>11224883>I don't know why I even bought all this shit instead of going with Tamiya,Tamiya is shit for brushpainting as well
>>11224887>I wanted to get Vallejo paints initially,I do pretty much all my work with vallejo and have no issues despite them not being as tough as alcohol based acrylics (tamiya/gunze) or actual lacquers. I bosh oils straight over the top with no varnish no problem.
>>11225743*hataka are also good, mig ammo mainly okay and lifecolor are soft as shit and have terrible adhesion even over auto primer (shame as they have good colour matches)
>>11225743>>11224887I second Vallejo as the best non-funny-solvent option with the one asterisk that their primers are not primers and pretty dogshit because they're literally just the same formula as their paint but labeled differently.
