Was there ever a reason that Hasbro never made a female for their special sub teams back in the original run?
No female in Python Patrol, Sky Patrol, Tiger Force, Night Force, Slaughter’s Marauders, Mega Marines, Eco Warriors, D.E.F., Iron Grenadiers or even Battleforce 2000?

The only one we got was Scarlett in Ninja Force. And not even Jinx got a new figure in that line.

G.I. Joe as a franchise was built on the idea of diversity. Females and PoC were a part of the franchise from the first few years even during the 12" run.

The sub-teams were all ways to resell popular molds and characters without just straight re-releases, which retailers weren't fond of. But the female characters were never the best sellers, so there wasn't much of a push to get them included in the teams. While the initial run was essentially a wild shotgun blast of ideas trying to appeal to as much as the market as possible, the repaints were more focuses "best-sellers" designed with a profit first mindset.

I think they were counting on making Pythona for Cobra-La in 1988 but the movie’s reception caused it to be nixed like other Cobra-La toys in 1988.

Hasbro really needs to make some more Marines characters.

I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen this happen yet. If Transformers can crossover with Street Fighter, why not actively roll out updated versions of the original Joe v SF figures. They wouldn't step on Jada's toes since they'd never make those versions of these guys, and they already have most of the molds needed for the figures.

I think Hasbro largely gave up on doing female characters after 1987 (Jinx was the last female figure of the classic line until the Ninja Force Scarlet and Vypra, the later of which IIRC was a mail in figure and a lazy repaint of Jinx at that).

That said, a new Baroness figure was planned and a prototype made that would have come out in the 1994/1995 wave had the line not been canceled. And when they did revive the line, they did make a huge point to have Lady Jaye and Baroness be part of the first assortment.

But I think one of the main issues is that Hasbro would prefer only having one Joe female and one Cobra female and those being Scarlett and Baroness respectively.

He's a corrupt boxer who works for Shadowloo as an assassin who basically beats people to death with his fists. She stayed with Cobra, because she was the only person who knew what CC looked like under his mask and used that to leverage Fred into becoming her ally against Serpentor and Mindbender, both of which hated her and were slowly replacing her with Zarana.

Destro and Baroness I should also note, had broken up around this time as they had a huge fight during the evacuation of Springfield in #50 when Baroness point blank told Destro that she wanted him to help her kill CC during the evac and use the chaos to basically become the new leader of Cobra. Destro told her she was an honorless cunt whom didn't know Destro at all as far as him refusing to stab CC in the back after pledging his services to him. Then CC and Destro got separated from Cobra and Destro had to get GI Joe to help him oust Major Bludd from his castle.

IIRC the Cobra Civil War story, the only reason GI Joe got involved is that Destro promised to have the Iron Grenadiers stay neutral in exchange for them rescuing Baroness from Serpentor and Mindbender.

Afterwards, Baroness turned down an offer to join the Grenadiers and stayed with Cobra until the events of the Snake Eyes trilogy and Destro basically retiring until the Destro trilogy (116-118) which had them come out of retirement and their subsequent brainwashing at the end of the series.

IIRC there's one issue of Special Missions where Serpentor has had enough of Zarana and the Baroness bickering, but he didn't really seem to have an particular problem with Baroness or Zartan until they threw in with Fred, ousting him from the leadership position and propping up a fraud for their own gain.

So I got tired of not seeing any new Joes at retail and decided to give the Super 7 line a try since God knows they are at least releasing stuff slower and have a lot more accessories than the Hasbro line.

Picked up loose versions of Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes. Some thoughts:

Cobra Comander:
Pros: lots of gears and his gloved hands are compatible with Snake Eyes (who's bare hand status is an affront to my tastes in costume)
Cons: the striped helmet was loose as hell on his head joint. I put the non-striped head on him and it holds a bit better.

Snake Eyes:
Pros: nice sold figure with none of the head related problems CC had.
Cons: bare hands (thankfully the CC spare hands fit his hand joint holes) and garbage accessories.

Thinking about getting some more Super7 figures, mainly Crimson Guardsman, Destro, Baroness, and Cobra Trooper. Get the Cobra figures from the line since they have their classic looks.

I have three Turtles Super7s (April O'Neil, Casey Jones, and Mutagen Man) and they are all good.

Also have the Red Ranger S7 figure who's pretty decent.

The chief stumbling blocks for Super7 is that they cost $55 a pop, has a super small character selection, take forever to come out, and bad quality control (the fucked up head sculpts for Flint and Lady Jaye being most notable).

But mostly, to be frank, the price is the biggest stumbling block. I know a lot of stores just won't fucking carry them because they cost too much and don't work as an impulse buy like Classified does.

Knowing the line may well be over is the big thing. I know we will see many of the figures we got rereleased as deluxes which certainly could help flint/lady jaye's heads but other than that I have serious doubts we're going to see much in the way of new characters, and we didn't get all of cobra high command or all of the core joes; they didn't even get around to snake eyes in his normal outfit.

Different things in different continuities, and Scrap-Iron was usually a pretty minor character. His first filecard says "it is believed" that he worked for Destro, but the comics and cartoons in the 80s never did anything to connect them. In the Marvel comic he doesn't appear much after killing Ripcord's girlfriend and the Soft Master because they just had newer characters to promote, his only noteworthy moment after that was being on Serpentor's side in the Cobra Civil War, and he was probably too low down in the Cobra hierarchy to know for sure that it wasn't the real Cobra Commander leading the other side.

In the cartoon his biggest role is in the 5-part serial 'Arise Serpentor, Arise!', where he's the only Cobra who stayed loyal to Cobra Commander after everyone else turned against him and backed Mindbender's plan to create a new leader, even Cobra Commander's personal bodyguards sided with Mindbender's cabal. That's where people got the idea of Scrap-Iron being Cobra Commander's friend from, but the cartoon made it clear Scrap-Iron's loyalties are paid for, Mindbender was able to bribe him into betraying Cobra Commander, who later pays him to switch sides again, the dude's totally mercenary.

IIRC Scrap-Iron being connected to Destro actually got used in something for the first time during the Devil's Due comic era, where he ended up on Destro's side during his attempt to take over Cobra.

With the toys, when Hasbro were pushing the Iron Grenadiers as Destro's own faction, they focused on creating new characters to be on his team, rather than new versions of Cobras who might have made sense joining him.

Cav Stetsons were a big thing with scout pilots in Vietnam. That is most certainly where the designers got it, thought they went all the way back to the blue ones of the 19th century cavalry.

So the parts the tailfins and ports they connect to on the Dragonfly, are they supposed to be identical to eachother? Either my copy had two left tailfins or one of the parts they connect to was assembled incorrectly.

Either way I had to do in there and do some dangerous, plastic stressing prying to open stuff to fix the connection part at least by flipping it and ended up cutting my thumb.

As GI Joe fandom goes, you're weird, but you're not alone. There's usually a few of us here.

The Energon Universe comics are introducing GI Joe to a whole new generation with no preconceived notions about what's "too weird" for GI Joe, and Cobra-La seems to be getting well received there. It probably helps that it's a shared universe with Transformers from day one and that Energon Universe Cobra Commander is a human who was taken in by Cobra-La, avoiding the complaints from people who couldn't handle /theirguy/ being a snake man.

To be fair, even in those comics, no matter how many of the Red Ninjas get killed, there's always more of them. Maybe they were still recruiting and training new guys.

But in those comics, or any later version of GI Joe where Storm Shadow changes sides, they do need to have some other ninja characters allied with Cobra, so there's someone for the heroes to have ninja fights with. That's why it's a good thing we have Slice and Dice, as well as Firefly getting revealed to be a secret ninja in the comics, as well as Zartan being ninja-adjacent.

Cobra-La couldn't ruin GI Joe for you unless your parents got you the figures and sat there forcing you to use them whenever you played with your GI Joes.

I swapped the head on my custom and I think it looks fine, but then again the chest rig I put on him is a bit higher up on the shouder which maybe makes him look a bit bigger. The Blowback head I had on him before was smaller than the stock head and the new one is a little bit bigger. It's not 100% perfect but it's not out of line with the other figures in the range, either.

Funnily enough the head doesn't look like a drastically different character but I think it's a huge improvement. He looks younger and more soldier-like, whereas I always felt the original looked more like a sleazy politician.
