We had 66 total RD releases for 2024, that's including all exclusives (web, store etc.).
What was your favorite RD release of the year?
Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
What are you looking forward to for 2025?

My favorite RD was the first release of the year, Blue Destiny Unit 1! Love Blue Destiny and to finally have the RD in-hand after years in development limbo was awesome. The RD itself is built on the familiar Ground Gundam engineering which hits all the major articulation points and the sculpt/accessories are all where they should be. Not a particularly exciting release in terms of bringing anything new to the line, but a great representation of a cool mobile suit. Also picked up Efreet Custom this year, which was a late 2023 release, and that was a similarly excellent RD.

For 2025, I've got ThreeZero's VF-1S on preorder and I'm eager to check their valk out for myself. I'm also hoping we'll finally get the Hi-Metal Tomahawk destroid.

Admittedly, 2024 was a pretty slow year in terms of mecha toys for me. I got a good number of RDs and Metal Builds/Composites, but it feels like the majority of mecha I bought were repaints or retools of a previous release. While I was glad to have them, I wasn't motivated to take pics like I have been in the past (though being busy with life also played a huge factor). I still keep an eye on the threads and love seeing the release news and thoughts you guys post, but I feel like there's less interesting stuff to talk about and I'm barely participating in the threads myself. I still want to keep the threads up, but I'm wondering if it may be time to let it die during slow release periods?

I just realized it's been 10 years (possibly more?) since I first started posting these threads, haha. While there may be lulls here and there, I'll always love mecha toys, so here's to more mecha in 2025!

I don't care for this redesign but hopefully they're going to do more classic super robots now.

>What was your favorite RD release of the year?
Honestly, this year has been pretty average for releases to me.
As I've a massive boner for Hazel Custom, it's most likely the Hazel Custom in Titan colours.
For non-recolour, it's probably Calibarn although one of the Permet bits popping off the thigh all the time let it down a bit.
Although, I found Guel's Dilanza quite flexible considering the bulk to it, plus the purple adds some nice mix to the shelf.

>Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
Jada M.Bison, expected very little due to the price but found him such an expressive figure to pose with the cape. Even convinced a friend to pick up his own Bison.

>What are you looking forward to for 2025?
Pic related for what I'm looking forward to so far.
I got the Jumbo Soft Vinyl RX-78-2, Guntank and Guncannon and found myself wanting more unique looking versions.
Also looking forward to picking up the MkII in white and one or two GMIIs when I'm on holiday though.
That and some more Zeta announcements, a Hyaku Shiki ideally, and hopefully a non transforming Zeta.

>What was your favorite RD release of the year?
I only got three new releases RD from this year, hard to pick which is my favorite as they all have some flaws. Most of the purchases this year are previous releases since I'm more of a model kit guy and only started getting into RD in 2021.
>Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
So many, the one that I spent the most time playing with is probabbly RD Gouf Custom
>What are you looking forward to for 2025?
The one that I can think of right now is MRD G-self

>What was your favorite RD release of the year?
Boring answer is the Mass Production type Bozune from Aura Battler Dunbine. Was always hoping Bandai would get to this version of the Bozune when I saw the the other MP Aura Battlers, and got my wish; with a bonus of a hilarious pack-in display stand. Feel like I need to grab a MP Botune soon though now..
One issue though, my MP Bozune was straight-up missing the accessory to plug in the sword to the hand. Had third-party ball joint parts to make a replacement, so was fine and the replacement might be better; but man that'd been a major disappointment without those parts...

Really though, this was the year of finally tracking down past figures for me. Some OG RDs like the FMP! Gernsbacks, Geara Zulu(with a cheap Kshatriya found for a friend), Phantasm Bellvine, and the Muisy Ver. Zwarth!

>Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
Something new this year should be my Metal Build Kampfer, but to be honest it's getting overshadowed by Christmas finds of the Half-Size Metal Gears REX & RAY I got this week hahaha! Latter I'm especially happy about, as it for now 'replaces' the Full-Size RAY I got that had both legs break-up at the waist joints in storage... Eventually figure out a fix with 3D printing, but again I got a figure to represent my favourite Metal Gear. Sorry for a boring pic-related hahaha!

>What are you looking forward to for 2025?
Not a lot to be honest, though it's just timing for me I think. MS for the ANIME line I want, I don't think will happen until 2026 realistically. Made an order for the Funnel Type MP Nu Gundam to hopefully be my first and only Metal Robot Spirits figure.

With the ANIME Blue Destiny RDs, hoping some ANIME Zeonic Front figs can get announced this year. Really would like another Zaku I like Garrets, and a figure for the Mudrock Gundam finally would be nice.

Can someone with the VF-25 Super Messiah tell me how stable those wing swivels are?

They look like they'd flop a lot under the weight of the boosters.
>>

The boosters aren't that heavy/the hinges are strong enough to hold things together.

>I just realized it's been 10 years (possibly more?) since I first started posting these threads, haha. While there may be lulls here and there, I'll always love mecha toys
/rdg/ is the only reason I come to /toy/. I'm glad you make these threads, because over the past 15 years my building of gunpla has gone down and my collecting of RD's has gone up. I'm looking forward to 2025 because I am collecting the Zeta ANIME line and we should get a lot of good releases for it during the year, including the Zeta itself. Would also like to see Bandai release something toywise from later UC during the year, F91 and Victory.
>>
>>11276886
>What was your favorite RD release of the year?
In my case it would have to be the Metal Robot Spirits Destiny, I got it along the WoL set and it is as impressive as I hoped, then again, this is a rerelease from a figure made years ago with a slightly different color scheme.

>Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
Mecha related? By far Moshow's Jingwei, it is so stylish and basically a rip off of the WZC.

I also collect Saint Seiya Myth Clogth figures and this year was absolutely packed by 3rd parties and bootleg companies releasing characters Bandai will never make, like ALL the Silver Saints.
The crown would go for a brand named Toypoint that released iterations of Apolo and Ares, yes the Olympian gods with an engineering quality that leaves Bandai in the dust.

>What are you looking forward to for 2025?
Not much. First, Moshow's Masamune Date Illustrious Class figure in the first quarter of the year, essentially a 1/100 downsize from their massive 1/60 figure.
I'm still on the fence of the upcoming Riobot Soulgain due to its high price.
That aside, nothing else, a real shame but it is also because most mecha related figure have gotten stupidly expensive in the last year and I can't really justify shelling out that much for them.

>big zam getting mass produced
is this the end of the federation as we know it?
>>
>>11279247
2025 is the 10th anniversary of Metal Robot Spirits as well, so hopefully we’ll get a couple commemorative figures to celebrate that. Personally hoping for an EX-S rerelease, but who knows.

MB-wise I suspect the next 00 figure after the 1.5 will be Cherudim. They’re probably saving the 00 Raiser 2.0 for the 15th anniversary of MB in 2026. Other than the teased Meteor and the Impulse, no clue where SEED’s going. Zeta’s already the confirmed retail release so no idea where the God, Impulse, or the teased Shining are gonna end up, I feel like the G Gundams might end up P-Bandai.

For Ver Anime we’ll hopefully start getting to the real meat of Zeta and SEED, probably won’t be out in 2025 but I’m very excited to get the Druggies in RD form. Won’t be cheap but nothing is these days. Messala, Gaplant, Hyauku Shiki, Asshimar are the big ones from Zeta I’m looking forward to.

>Cherudim
This is one I considered too, the Astraea II has parts that strangely look like they could be for the Cherudim, the Dynames Saga having its weapons is also a huge tell.
The Dynames III having the Virtue's Bazooka also makes that one a possibility.

The 2 left field releases I'm really hoping for though are that DX Aquarion, with the new series releasing they'll have a chance to revisit the old DX and maybe update the proportions and gimmicks.
Also hoping Eureka Seven's 20th anniversary leads to a new Nirvash toy that can transform without part swapping, or at least minimal part swapping.
>>
>>11276886
>What was your favorite RD release of the year?
Full armor Hyaku Shiki Kai. Objectively this one is only OK between the extra cost paid in that gold paint and how nerve-racking actually putting the armor on it is but it looks really cool and I give it a lot of points for that. For actual best RD I'd probably give it to the Hi-zack.

>Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
This one is really tough. There's a LOT of great high end robots that I got this year, easily the most I've ever bought in one year. I don't even want to think about what I spent. I'd probably give it to the Riobot Dygenguar overall just for the engineering and what a wild design it is, but I just got the blitzway/moshow Shin Getter today and it is easily the best value I've ever seen for a chogokin figure. Its huge, has immaculate paint, a bunch of light up gimmicks, tons of diecast and has a polystone stand that probably weighs more than the figure itself. Definitely would recommend it if you can still find it in stock anywhere.

>What are you looking forward to for 2025?
Not sure if I'll actually buy it but want to see how that amakuni kizin Genesic Gaogaigar comes along, and sentinel has said they're doing Aussenseiter next for SRW. Eager to see if they can pull off that transformation without completely killing its articulation like the SOC.

Looking to get a figure to pair up with my MB Exia, I'm split between the Dynames and Astraea.

I can probably get the Astraea for cheaper, and it complements the Exia since they come from the same design lineage, plus I already have the Astraea II.

But I also like how the Dynames comes with a ton of gimmicks and pairing it with the Exia is more anime accurate.

>What was your favorite RD release of the year?
Honestly haven't picked much up, mostly just the WfM figs and a handful of others. I picked up the Blue Destiny figs off of Hobby-Genki's black friday sale and picked slow shipping, and I still haven't shipped my Gundam Mk II. Out of the slim pickings, I'd probably give it to Aerial Rebuild Quiet Zero ver. The color is a lot better than the first release, the blue is more accurate to the show and muted, the Quiet Zero base is cool as hell, and it comes with pretty much everything the first release did except for some of the permet panel colors.
>Favorite non-RD release and/or pick-up of the year?
The Metal Build GN Arms Type D Option Set. Yeah it was a pretty penny, but having the full Dynames and GN Arms Type D is such a cool set to have together and has such great shelf presence. If I ever had to sell my collection those 3 would be the last to go.
>What are you looking forward to for 2025?
I didn't pre-order it, but the MRD G-Self looks great! Due to personal life stuff I can't collect half as much as I have been, so pricey MRDs are out unless we get Heavyarms/Sandrock to finish the Wing set. If the G-Self winds up going a bit below MSRP I might work some overtime to pick it up.

I made the mistake of cancelling my pre-orders for this guy back in 2022 when it came out.

Why is this figure so impossible to find? Especially for a decent price? It retailed for a little over $100 and now on the rare occasion I find it the price is never below $300!!!

I'm worried about the price for that one, hope it's not too high. They seem to be making the smaller versions in order of release of the original ones, I think there's 3 for now. If they keep going then they'll definitely make a smaller wei guo at some point

Happy New Year all! Really enjoyed reading about people's pickups for 2024. If you're looking to grab something to start the year, Amazon has MB Laevatein for $187 with a 15% off coupon you can clip on the product page:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C7LR6T45?th=1

Solid deal for Laevatein! Can also apply that coupon to the XL-3 booster to bring it down to $182, but the booster has been a little cheaper than that before.

Also finally got around to watching season 1 of Witch from Mercury; interested to see where it goes. Amazon has so many different versions of the second season for streaming though, not sure which to get. There's a subtitled one that only has 10 episodes, while a "simuldub" version has 12 episodes but states it only has English language. I suspect it also includes the Japanese subbed one, but don't want to waste my Amazon credits on the wrong one, haha.

Just got my MRD Haze’n-thlay in the other day. Pretty much a dream come true release for me, as it’s my favorite iteration of the Hazel. Great figure, really glad it has functioning sub-arms since the HGUC version did not. The composite shield booster is just a tad too heavy for the arms, but that’s no surprise with AoZ MRDs at this point. Also good to see the booster pod has a hardpoint for attaching to the back of the Woundwort, though I haven’t tried it yet. I will say, with the weight issues of certain accessories on most RDs, I do kind of wish they’d utilize more ratcheted joints like they did in the Kshatriya ages ago.

Please Bandai, keep releasing AoZ MRDs. I can never have enough. Though, I’m expecting a TR-6 Hazel II more-so than a Kehaar II. I’d prefer the latter, but expect them to go that route, at least first, due to the fact that it requires very little new molds for them to produce to achieve it.

Haze’n-thlay II feels so much more guaranteed after the Haz’n-thlay though.

Which figures? I tried out the newest Deathscythe and it has better articulation than the subpar early ones. It's better than a Marvel Legend at the same price point, thats for sure.

Katoki has lost his mind. Or he's been watching too much Michael Bay's Transformers.

That's because regular RDs are now edging closer than ever to metal RD/chogokin prices. Not everyone wants to pay $100 for a 5" scale plastic robot no matter how good the engineering claims to be.

If they manage to improve the articulation a bit and include some basic accessories without jacking up the price too much then I'm in on the GU line.

It's unfortunate because I really don't like the GU sculpts.
It's also weird how banda just introduced a new line, which was supposed to be cheap to now pivot and move it up again while making the other lines more expensive.

What's the point? It's so redundant.

Now in a few years they'll have to introduce another line when GU becomes too expensive.

All 3 of the new GU figures are up for pre-order on BBTS, and both Wing Zero and Unicorn come with complete weapons loadout.

Unicorn has the beam magnum, bazooka, shield, and two beam sabers. Wing Zero has the buster rifle (which splits), two beam sabers, and the shield.

So it seems now they're understanding that having a full loadout makes for a better toy.

RX78-2 was my first, wasn't a big fan, but it wasn't bad. Saw the Astray Red Frame for cheap and decided to give it a try. Extremely disappointed in it. Extremely subpar articulation, especially for what should be an agile MS.

nah bandai is just raising the prices on everything across the board. the price on this piece of shit for example >>11290248 is just insane.
We've gotten to the point where even sentinel's overpriced riobots seem more reasonable than bandai's high end toys. If the yen ever actually recovers this hobby is dead.

I'm old enough to remember the transition from MSIA to RDs and it seems Bandai has always been trying to crack the overseas market but couldn't due to the strict price margins of big retailers like Target, and the lack of cultural impact for their brands like Gundam.

By the time RDs rolled around they had pretty much given up overseas but were still producing affordable figures for the local market to collect - That is, until Covid happened and the yen tanking caused prices to skyrocket.

But they were now selling overpriced toys to a rapidly shrinking local market, and are forced to look again overseas for profit - which meant licensing deals (i.e. netflix) and coming up with a product that could fit the price margins set by retailers (GU).

I also think Bandai fucked themselves by getting too greedy - like slapping an upcharge now on anything with the "ver. ANIME" tag and introducing competing lines like Metal RDs which did nothing but cannibalise sales/resources away from regular RDs.

Ah ok, not the ones I got, but interesting to hear about them.

I got the first Barbatos and was rather disappointed in the range, especially the legs which were hampered at the hips. ZGMF-X10A Freedom was fine, nothing special, pretty average for the price point, but had better leg articulation than Barbatos. The Deathscythe Hell (EW) had unexpectedly good articulation compared to the former 2 though. My impression is they have tried to improve vs early missteps, but the paint is limited by the $24.99 MSRP. I feel like for a budget line that is just what one has to expect though.
