Who here 3D prints toys/accessories? Any modelers out there? I've just about finished the first draft of Midna here- need to tidy up a few remaining errors then get my printer set up again so I can test-print her.

Nice work. Hope the first print has little or no issues.

Waiting on a Sculpteo print for my Dog-girl/Thylacine-Girl/Mal0-chan test. In the meantime I decided to work on my Delusion Diary Kosuzu figure (really just a head and will be transplanted onto my petite blank body I already have for sale on Cults). This is my first time doing an anime-style face from scratch and not using a base mesh file to work off of.
>>
>>11286711
I don't think the eyes should be molded. Eye decals work better for anime figures.
>>
>>11286721
Ordinarily yeah, but I may give this articulated eyes later (dimensional limitations permitting), which is something I've managed to do with a realistic human head and face in SLS nylon. Mind you, that figure's eyes were spherical and about 3mm in diameter with 2mm pegs in the back to position the eyes from the back of the faceplate (once removed). Given the proportions of Tsukino Jyogi's earlier works, articulating Kosuzu's eyes might be a challenge.

I've been on a 3 year hiatus with 3D printing.
Has there been any new changes in the consumer field?
I feel like resin gets better detail but at the risk of breaking.
PLA is sturdy but at the risk of low quality detail. Also, I don't like the amount of waste it makes (people talking about how much 'poop' it makes is a big turn off)
>>
>>11286737
Resione have already made a V2 of their Tough 74 resin. And I can tell you, the V1 is RIDICULOUSLY tough. Like, in my limited experiments with it before I had to move, I found it was tougher and stronger than some plastics. You do have to make some allowances for it being resin but the future is bright for printing toys.

I actually wanted to try doing this shit myself. an IRL friend said if I could make a figure that's popup parade/goodsmiles quality or better, he'll pay me moneyz for it. The last thing I made to completion was my dog. Rest in peace buddy :(. Funnily enough my parents were so impressed by him that they wanted me to try and start a 3D printing business online until I find a job. Problem is, I don't know what market I should really cater to and I barely have a few ideas on how to market myself
>>
>>11286751
> don't know what market I should really cater to and I barely have a few ideas on how to market myself
Find a niche, cater mostly to that but also have a few other types of models/objects available. If you have many types of dog models, that's a place to start. On some kind of memorial or base where you can add any pet name and/or dates for customers. But don't bother selling painted prints. That sucks the profit and fun out of anything when you have to price painted parts so high and they take up so much time.
>>
>>11286743
> IRL friend said if I could make a figure that's popup parade/goodsmiles quality or better
No 3D print will be as 'good' as any injection molded, factory painted figure. Is your friend expecting a durable, painted figure too? That's some very naive thinking
>>
>>11286737
>Has there been any new changes in the consumer field?
I feel like resin gets better detail but at the risk of breaking.
Much cheaper, higher quality printers, many more types of specialty resins. There are dozens of resins that are more durable than the brittle ones that only existed years ago. Tons of engineering ones specifically for things like translucency, rubber-like parts, stretchy parts, high heat tolerance, high tensile strength, etc. Many chinese companies are jumping in the resin game so there are now many companies selling cheap bottles on Amazon that you can also mix and match for unique mechanical and appearance-wise properties
>>

I don't actually think he's expecting anything right now desu. I haven't told him I'm doing any of this. I was gonna surprise him. Regardless he has a rather low opinion of my painting skills cuz he's basing them off my legion minis, which are admittedly very shoddy work and don't actually reflect my full potential. So part of this is to prove him wrong. I probably won't get it to some absolute gold standard, but I have the materials with me and at the very least I think it's worth a try.

>>11286759
Right now I only have the dog model. I made him as a way to process the grief for my dog who we had to put down in October. I did make a memorial base for him too (inspired by a trip to Portugal) but for whatever reason it was god damn cursed it failed to print right 90% of the time. And the one time it came out mostly well it was way too small. But yeah my parents suggested doing memorial dog statues like that. Problem was I was turned off to the idea cuz I heard someone else was already doing that for a living.
Other than that someone wanted to collab with me to make some 3rd party 40k orks with the selling point being they look accurate to the 2006 molds. If that doesn't work, either monsters like the guy in the pic I also posted, or see if the character im currently making is gud and i could possibly make others like it.
>But don't bother selling painted prints.
what if I charge them a lil extra for paint?

>>11286781
thats rad
>>
>>11286792
>I was turned off to the idea cuz I heard someone else was already doing that for a living.
There's people all over the world selling 3d prints. Nothing will be wholly original which is where marketing comes in, like any business. It's not about being the only one selling a specific thing. It's about selling your things to people the best. Whether through better outreach, lower price, more variety, etc. I don't think the pet memorial prints is a bad idea though. I feel like the average pet owner is not usually one super tuned into 3D printing or toy collecting so they may be willing to pay a lot more for some physical memorial for a loved pet since they likely have no idea about how the process is or what it involves

>what if I charge them a lil extra for paint?
Price how you want, but I'm not gonna short change my time by any means. The second you spend hours hand painting a single 3D print, the profit margins automatically suck. I live where minimum hourly wage is close to $20 now. If I spent 3-4 hours giving a print a good paint job, there's no fucking way I'd ever be able to charge nearly $60-80 more for that. People have no understanding or appreciation for how time consuming painting is. Fine for personal/hobby projects, but not for running a profitable business venture.

That makes making personalized pet statues a bit more tricky because then you may need to offer different poses in order to make things match up with a provided image or something, but if using rigged models, maybe it won't be too difficult. Maybe offer one tier where you charge a lot more for a detailed paint job, but I'd stick to unpainted prints for like 95% of the stuff if I were running a printing business.
>>
>>11286781
That looks so cool man, keep it up!!
>>
>>11286810
Sorry to sidetrack but where do minimum $20 hourly wages exist??
>>
>>11286830
Around many major metro areas in the US. It's all relative though
>>
>>11286810
Well when I painted my dog, that part was more or less a breeze, but yeah maybe I did underappreciate how hard it can be, since other times more intricate detailed models are a lot more time consuming. Well when I try going big scale, I'll see how hard it is.

One other idea I had was to just put it up for sale on like, cults3D so people can pay for it, download it and print it themselves, but I'm wondering would I lose a potential higher profit not doing it myself maybe?
>>
>>11286183
btw how do you make sure the doll joints actually work properly? Did you download them from somewhere?
>>
>>11286897
Nah, I more or less just applied the basic concepts of existing joints and tried my best to replicate them. To be honest, the hard part isn't even designing the joints (ball joints and hinges are pretty simple). It's getting the clearances and tolerances right.
>>
>>11286878
I personally wouldn't put any file up for sale on a site like that if you had ay intentions of selling prints yourself at any point. People just buy and steal models claiming they made them and sell the files elsewhere. You're also missing out on the biggest market which is people who know nothing about 3D modeling or printing and have no way to print the models themselves, but love their pets. For something like that, I think the best way to advertise aside from the usual socials is targeted ads on facebook/IG. Not for right now obviously, but using the same models of pets for custom Xmas ornaments, snowglobes, etc would be a great way to repurpose existing models into 'new' product for the holidays.
>>
>>11286897
Hobby base released stls of their joints a while ago, it was for a limited time only though, i think i still have it, you could theorethically use it as a boolean tool to make the joint holes
>>
>>11286897
Like he said, it's not hard. Just examine the joints on dolls/figures you own and take apart a few figures to examine the joints. It's not rocket science. Make sure nothing clashes since real life physical objects can't clip through other objects. Add about half a millimeter of extra space between moving parts to account for the fluctuations and variances in printed parts, and you're done.
>>
>>11286906
They released files of the joints as one solid piece for boolean purposes only, or files of the individual parts of the joint so you can technically print them yourself?
>>
>>11286781
>>11286792
>>11286751
Are these resin? They look fantastic. I had a PLA extrusion printer years back, but the quality could never match this, it's amazing how far the technology has come. What model of printer are you guys using and what can you tell me about it? Back in the market and trying to do some research.
>>

>>
>>11287201
thx.
The model I have is an Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra. I did also recently get a Bambulab P1S cuz I wanted to do more CAD oriented stuff too.
>>
>>11287201
All resin. PLA isn't really used for any kind of model/figure stuff unless you truly don't care about the appearance. Good LCD resin printers have become so cheap and very accessible. Elegoo, AnyCubic, Photon are some brands for example. I think Elegoo is the most common and they have models with smaller build plates the run between $150-200, and models with larger build plates and a few more bells and whistles for about $250-400.
>>
>>11287253
I also have a Saturn 4 and have almost no complaints with it. You may need a bit of experience with resin printers for troubleshooting, but that's why choosing one of the most popular brands is good, because there's tons of communities online on Facebook, Reddit and Discord helping each other figure out problems and willing to help.
>>
>>11287255
Yeah, for the longest time I've had a pretty high success rate with my Saturn 4. Sadly I started getting more failures tho when winter came around, but even then all I had to do was move it closer in doors to get better results.
And to anyone reading this looking for a new printer: Don't get Anycubic unless you intent to upgrade later. Anycubic fucking sucks and I blew too much fucking money trying to fix my printer from lack of use. Seriously, whenever I came back from college to use it the LCD screen was always fucking broken somehow and I kept blowing 120 to get a new one. When I switched to the Saturn 4 I never got that problem (maybe cuz I also use it more often now but still).
I want to get rid of the Photon Mono X I have, but I don't want to just throw it away since it's still somewhat functional.... somewhat. What should I do with it?
>>
>>11287281
*Sorry I meant the UV screen kept breaking. But at one point the LCD screen broke too.

>>11287331
Yeeaaah I can never get the face quite right. Thinkin about maybe printing her with no eyes and either using decals or drawing the eyes on.
>>
>>11286908
I assume they were meant for printing however seems like they are missing the pegs and holes, so a boolean might be more fitting... can be fixed though!
>>
>>11287903
Yeah they're only good for booleans right now. I was hoping the files had each part of the joint separately so you could print your own in some durable resin

Kind of related, why are there no printable models for Figma or SHF style blank bodies online anywhere? Nobody has ever made any as much as people like to print stuff? I'm talking about good looking, well sculpted bodies where if you bought the hobby base joint sets, you could assemble a full figure. None of the ones that use the ugly large revo-ball joints either though.

Yeah, that's one of the things I need to fix after taking a moment to clear my head of the excitement of the initial design. Head/cranium needs to shrink down a bit to match the proportions of Tsukino Jyogi's earlier style that I'm trying to be closer to, his later style has comparatively longer faces/taller heads (pic related for comparison). The roots of her bangs need to be lowered and the bangs themselves need to be made into even more and smaller clumps of hair rather than just three big sections. Ears need basic contours added to them, upper eyelid creases like in the modded pic anon posted, and then I can tackle the short twintails. After that I'll do at least a smiling face, the angry-yelling face used in pic related, and a lustful face (2015 version's ahegao/mooing face possibly).

This is some great work, nice job. I assume you kept most of the structure of the original model then sculpted over it? For some criticism, I'd say the tail looks sloppy compared to the rest, and it hurts the overall look compared to the sharp sculpt of the rest of it. Perhaps you could integrate the articulation a bit more cleanly, unless you're really trying to maximize articulation as much as possible.

thank you! the shell is indeed my own work but structure has also been heavily altered to fit a more heroic silhouette and snap fit them to the new outside. they're fairly different from the original, i mostly had to make new frame parts but piggybacked off of the lucky 13 ball socket tolerances.

and yeah, i agree the tail is a little lego-ish but i do like how it moves, and a stealth benefit is that the middle two segments are identical, which means if i printed more i could extend it indefinitely.

>>
>>11291370
To be honest the pin holes might not even be necessary, I made them so the joints can be reinforced with 1mm wire but the main locking mechanism is a small nub-and-divot combination that should let the joints click together. If when I print her the hinges are strong enough purely by tension I might revise the design to remove them entirely. I do agree they're a bit of an eyesore, especially at this scale.

that sounds cool, could you show a crosssection of what that looks like, i made a slight ratched joint once but it worked only like half the time

No pics right now (I should be asleep kek) but TLDR: It's a simple hinge/cut joint where the inner section has a spherical bulge and the outer section has cutouts to encapsulate it. It effectively marries the function of a hinge and a very shallow balljoint.

honestly I don't. i just scraped the excess filament off with a clay tool or my fingernail and let messing with the toy knock off the more stubborn flash over time.
