I just got it in. I feel guilty and like shit for paying nearly half of what the Rattler with three figures cost to get it, but it couldn't be helped really. I've been in the game long enough to know that this is how the market works. It's the single most expensive figure I bought in decades. And no I don't give a shit that I just killed half the value by opening it up.

The Rattler is probably done shipping now. So no more unless Hasbro reissues it, most likely in a lighter blue color. So it's not gonna get any cheaper. Fuck it.
>>

Congratulations on finally getting it
>>
>>11552579
I wonder if the female packaged with the Polar Battle Bear is “Arctic Scarlet?”
Since we just got arctic Lady Jaye with the SnowCat.

I can’t think of any new female Joe that’s connected with cold environments.

Possible. Either her or Cover Girl

Since Hasbro won't do the Skystriker due to it size, what are the chances of getting the Conquest x-30 instead? The Joes need a counter to the Rattler.
>>
>>11552801
Technically the Dragongfly is its counterpart in the Classified line.

Once the FANG comes out, the Sky Hawk will come out to be its counter.

It probably is some new female character using existing body parts, like Wolf Spider.

The prices on a couple of the Rattler figures have softened. Two weeks ago the Rattler gunner was selling at $80 and Baroness was selling at $150, and both have come down. Wild Weasel is still holding his price, though. There's a son of sellers selling them now, and a few got the hint with lowering their prices to make the sale.

Cartoon Cobra Commander wasn't a used car salesman unless his life took a really weird detour between leaving Cobra-La and starting Cobra. He's probably not into human women and may not even have a pee-pee.

Comic Cobra Commander had an ex-wife and a son, but he's still one of those villains who's never 'off-duty', it's difficult to see either version of him having any time for romance or sex once he puts on the mask. Destro's the only male GI Joe villain who even seems to have an 'off-duty' setting.

The Cobra-La stuff came in 5 years after the start, so it feels more like a ret-con to me. Even Larry Hama knew it, which is why he didn't bother to include that shit in the comic books.
>>
>>11554491
>The Cobra-La stuff came in 5 years after the start, so it feels more like a ret-con to me.
It's only really a retcon if he already had an origin it was replacing, and in the cartoon, he didn't. There was no reason to assume he'd have the exact same origin as he did in the comic continuity when so many other things were different. IIRC by the time of the movie, the comics had only partially revealed some of his origin anyway, the full story wasn't told until later.

The various other iterations of GI Joe since have left Cobra Commander as a villain whose origin is a multiple choice question, there's no one default origin that most things go with.

>Even Larry Hama knew it,
Hama correctly convinced Hasbro that something like Cobra-La just wouldn't work in the comics, which were a lot more grounded, but it's not even close to the weirdest thing to happen in the cartoons.

If the movie had been more popular, and Hasbro had made more Cobra-La toys, they might have tried harder at forcing them into the comics, Hama was very aware if he fought Hasbro too hard on anything they could just replace him.

It was so out of nowhere, and an entire civlization laying hidden inside of a mountain for thousands of years seemed less believable than Cobra cloning dinosaurs. And Hasbro had already forced a new leader above CC that a lot of people didn't like (Serpentor), and now suddenly they just did it twice in two years (Golobulus).

And they knew they fucked up, which is why Sunbow's last stretch with the cartoon didn't mention Cobra-La at all beyond what's directly related to CC, CC was reconstituted into a serpent-man for which him being a serpent could be explained by the transformation process leaving a lignering trace, and Serpentor who was 100% human got turned into a lizard to get rid of him. And DIC was more than happy to run with a continuation of that instead of the Cobra-La narrative. And Larry Hama just dealt with it by claiming that CC is dead and bttle-armor CC is really a Crimson guardsman named Fred.
>>
>>11554524
>And they knew they fucked up, which is why Sunbow's last stretch with the cartoon didn't mention Cobra-La at all beyond what's directly related to CC
That was DIC. The movie was the last Sunbow GI Joe animation, outside of some toy ads.

>And Larry Hama just dealt with it by claiming that CC is dead and bttle-armor CC is really a Crimson guardsman named Fred.
The real Cobra Commander wore that armor for a few issues. In a real short space of time, Hasbro seem to have given Hama conflicting instructions to promote Cobra Commander's new toy AND kill him off for synergy with the movie.

Anyway, I guess you're not looking forward to the Pythona figure.
>>
>>11554545
At any rate people hated Serpentor, which is why he's hardly in the 1986 cartoon season after the "Arise Serpentor Arise" mini-series. People also hated Golobulus, especially the stupid figure with a long tail you couldn't do shit with and couldn't have the figure stand up.
>>
>>11554549
>people hated Serpentor
Well, that's your opinion. He's divisive, but not all of us hate him, and it's a common anecdote that he was one of the must-have GI Joe toys of 1986. A lot of the early season 2 episodes after the opening 5 parter were allegedly recycling scripts that had been written a year earlier, but didn't make it into season 1, so he doesn't show up so much until the second half of the season because they couldn't fit him into those scripts without a lot of rewriting. If it was a "Hasbro knew they screwed up" situation it would be the other way around, with his presence reducing in the later episodes.

I'm not going to defend Golobulus' toy, just Burgess Meredith's work in voicing him, he didn't need to do as good a job as he did with that role. I hope Hasbro can make Golobulus work in Classified.
>>
>>11554552
>I hope Hasbro can make Golobulus work in Classified.
The hard part is the tail. I am sure it'll be a snap-on tail in various poses including a coiled one so it can stand up.
>>
>>11554549
It could be a fun toy now though
>>
>>11554591
Personally I hate the 1986 cartoon because of how it was handled. It immediately starts off with Doctor Mindbender complaining about CC's leadership and how Cobra needs a new leader. While that's happening all I'm thinking is "DUDE YOU'VE BEEN ON THE JOB FOR COBRA FOR LIKE FIVE MINUTES. STFU!" Both Flint and Duke got down-graded in rank by Hawk and Beach Head who were both out of nowhere as well, and Duke's given shit jobs in remote areas to show the audience that he's no longer the alpha Joe. At least the Dreadnoks intro'd Thrasher and Monkeywrench instead of pulling them out of thin air and pretending like they were always there.
>>
>>11554524
Dude, Cobra-La was invented so they could be completely defeated by the end of the movie.
We couldn’t have G.I.Joe do a decisive victory over Cobra in the movie to end the franchise.
And it worked.

>It immediately starts off with Doctor Mindbender complaining about CC's leadership and how Cobra needs a new leader.
To be fair, within the context of the cartoon, you don't even need to be a member of Cobra to have figured that out. It's actually understandable that the new guy is freaking out about "how is this guy possibly still in charge?".

>>11554744
You're not wrong, but Hasbro did have plans to make further Cobra-La toys if the movie was more successful (some of them seem to have been re-purposed and released as Cobra or IG soldiers), and Sunbow didn't think the movie was going t be the cartoon's finale, they had plans for a third season in which, at least to begin with, Cobra would also be finished, with Tomax and Xamot gathering former Cobras into a new group. It's so far removed from anything Hasbro was doing with the toys that it's difficult to see them allowing it to run past a season-opening 5 part story that ends with Cobra back to normal.
>>
>>11554988
The idea of Cobra La was great, just poorly executed with poor writting and shitty designs, especially cobra commander. You're telling me a man turned into a snake ends up looking like a frog with scalps for teeths? So much wasted potential if you ask me.

Is Action man on Hasbro's no fly list ? Since Valaverse snatched the action force name.
It feels odd that Hasbro has abandoned the character since as I remember he was pretty popular thanks to the 12-inch line and even the McDonald’s toys.

I’d love to see the NF version—or honestly, ANY version at this point.

Nullifier, Darklon, and the main IG trooper are the three repurposed Cobra La guys. Sone like to think the three removable mask Vipers (Toxo, Astro, Hydra) were also intended to be Cobra La but it later came out that they were just an experiment by Hasbro to see if they could to d do Cobra troops with removable masks

Action Man is basically Hasbro's back-up when the overall liberal sentiment is anti-military.

>>11554960
Hama accepted the sci-fi elements that Hasbro threw at him, but only up to a certain point. He tried to keep the comic books as "military" as possible in spite of what Hasbro was pushing. And there was no doubt a whole lot of "I got out of bed for this shit?" days with him while doing it.

He didn't have Cobra/Joe going on ancient treasure-hunting missions for an enchanted conch that made men stupid, King Arthur's sword, the treasure of the Pharoahs, etc. He only did that once at a minimum state with Serpentor's DNA coming from ancient sites as per Hasbro's guidelines for the character. And Cobra-La was no doubt too far out there for his liking.

>>11555434
There's a distinction between sci-fi elements that are not strictly real, but can still be explained with science and could plausibly be real within the next 50 years or already as some super secret skunkworks used by an elite special force like G.I.Joe. Jetpacks, laser guns, orbital lasers, power armor, DNA manipulation, androids. And "sci-fi" elements that are closer to pure fantasy like literal magic, ghosts, time travel and underground lizardmen, all the weird stuff from the cartoons.
Hard science fiction vs soft sci-fi / fantasy.
I always got the sense Hama writes about futuristic technologies and their possibilities for warfare with the passion of someone who reads actual SF authors like Heinlein. Even when the story goes to unlikely places like space he tries to keep it semi plausible. No doubt he was rolling his eyes at a lot of the stuff coming from Hasbro but only because he cares more about the genre than the toy designers who just make whatever they think looks cool.
>>
>>11555494
It's like Metal Gear Solid with there being sci-fi elements within military, but it's plausible sci-fi elements. There's nothing so far out there that the only way to explain it is "turn your brain off and you'll like it."

BUT unlike MGS which was under full contol by its creator (Hideo Kojima), Hama didn't get to be the creator of any of it, and had to take what Hasbro threw at him like the bouncing cobra pogo of psycho-bouncing-death, and find a way to work with it. He did a good job all things considered.

They lured you in with insta-nostalgia, then drop a whole bunch of other shit on you while marginalizing most of their established characters to promote the new toys....excuse me characters. That's basically what Transformers The Movie did, except with less killing.

Zarana was supposed to be topless in it, which the fags cut out. That's a bigger crime against the fans than out-of-nowhere aliens living secretly on earth. Maybe one day when AI advances enough, someone will seamlessly put that part back in.

Speaking of repurposed figures.

What's the deal with Overlord? I know the dossier says he's a CG that decided he should be leader but certain commercials and the figure itsef make me think it was originally meant as a new Cobra leader, if not a knew version of Cobra Commander himself.

Also
>Shredder like helmet
>Shredder like claws
>voiced by James Avery in the commercials
>>
>>11556358
Urban legend was that Hama was told he could bring CC back as a clone but he had to come back "different" IE the whole "clones only physically look like someone but immediately develop unique identities and personalities" and rather than be Cobra Commander, he would take a new name "Overlord" and pretty much unify Cobra and destroy the Iron Grenadiers to unify Cobra as one group under him.

But then shit changed and Hama was allowed to just say CC survived being shot after all and Overlord has his bio card changed and basically it was decided to just ignore him as a character until Devil's Due made him a Serpentor loyalist.
>>
>>11556461
Then there's also the part where in the late 80s/early 90s Hasbro was trying to keep GI Joe relevant by competing with Ninja Turtles. That's when it was "NINJAS NINJAS NINJAS EVERYWHERE, AND OUR NINJAS ARE COOL BECAUSE THEY HAVE MOTORCYCLES AND SHIT!" Firefly and Zartan were suddenly ninjas, and they even planned a "ninja force" line with Road Pig, Flint, Scarlet, and others as ninjas. so I don't think it's coincidental that Overlord looks "inspired" by Shredder.

Original G.I.Joe was a generic unnamed soldier.

Ttrue, but Classified is based on ARAH, not the 1960s line.

I think TMNT and several ninja movies in the 80's-90's influenced the decision to make ninja shit more prominent back in the day. Ninja Force became kind of a meme but now add nostalgia and it's something like "so bad is good" type of shit.

G.I. Joe is a very "I like that, let's try it" kind of line and sometimes they try to pass blatant ripoffs as "homages"

I like GI Joe better in the cartoon where there was only one ninja.

Microman/Micronauts fag here... Does the silver get "sticky"? Do you have to coat them in that clear floor polish? Do they dull if you accidentally touch it?

A number of these were real, but I feel like people are just making fake ones now. The Ghost Viper hasn't even gone up for PO or really even had a vague release date yet.

GIBros... Who the FUCK is this guy in the back of the APC box? I don't think I've ever seen a reference to him anywhere and he seems that have a Has to qualify mold ie. He's not from a K Mart knock off brand. Wtf

I'm betting on real, Walmart and Target are both running collector events going into October to coincide with NYCC, and Pythona is supposed to be the Fall Con exclusive. Having all the new items in stock at once wouldn't be too surprising if they were trying to ship around tariff changes.

If we're going with "random character gets a new toy in the Ninja Force subline", The Baroness was the most overdue for a new figure. If we're going with someone who'd make any sense at all getting a Ninja Force figure, either Zandar for his stealth and silent weapons gimmick being close enough, or Serpentor because in the comics Storm Shadow was one of his DNA contributors.
>>
>>>11557241 I like GI Joe better in the cartoon where there was only one ninja.
that was so fucking dumb.
Storm Shadow's rival in the cartoon was Spirit, an indian tracker, because Snake Eyes was a mute, who couldn't have dialogue to state their rivalry.

Shit like this is why i never liked the original GI Joe cartoon. It was was so stupid, i knew it was retarded even as a child.

>>11557220
GI Joe was already following the ninja fad from the 70s/80s, before TMNT even existed. TMNT itself was following the ninja fad from the 70s/80s, because that's also what Daredevil was following, which TMNT was satiring.

GI Joe becoming Snake Eyes focused in the 90s is what led to the ninja force being created. I don't think there was a resurregence in ninjashit in the 90s until Power Rangers came out in the mid-90s, which was 2 years after Ninja Force was created. The early 90s was all about superheroes, so maybe Hasbro likened ninjas with superheroes and Snake eyes was the closest thing they to a superhero? Who knows.

Like most things in GI Joe fiction that don't seem to make sense, the real explanation is because of new toys to push. Storm Shadow's rivalry with Spirit in the cartoon wasn't because Snake Eyes was mute, it was because Spirit and Storm Shadow were both new toys being promoted in the second cartoon miniseries, while Snake Eyes was a older toy, so had a much smaller role. The comic issue that established the Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow rivalry was released earlier, but the production time for a cartoon, especially a 5-episode miniseries, is generally longer, so Revenge of Cobra was likely written with Sunbow having no idea of what the comics were going to do.

That the Sunbow writers never had Storm Shadow fight Snake Eyes in later episodes, even after the 2nd Snake Eyes toy, and instead used Quick Kick as a second rival for him, may have been Hasbro wanting the cartoon to push Quick Kick because the comics were already doing a good enough job of pushing Snake Eyes, or possibly a contrarian refusal to copy the thing the comics were popularizing, some interviews do give the impression of some sort of rivalry between the cartoon people and the comic people.

Sunbow's writers never did a Snake Eyes-centric episode because he was mute, but they had no problem including him as part of the ensemble cast, just with treating him like a main character.

I can see why people think Hydro-Viper might have been originally designed as a Cobra-La troop, but Toxo-Viper and Astro Viper look too obviously like guys in human-designed clothing. I'm not convinced on the Iron Grenadier, mainly because of the helmet, but Nullifier is even more obviously meant to be non-human than Darklon. There's something just mildly unsettling about the armor and the proportions of the head on that figure.
>>
>>11557922
The muteness of the character is the main reason the cartoons didn't push him. The comic medium lends itself much better to explaining what's going on with this guy who doesn't speak. They can always put in text boxes or have other characters give long-winded exposition.
The cartoon was written for young kids and the dialogue was on the level of "oh no!" and "grr I'm angry just you wait!"
They were never going to bother with deep dives into a speechless vietnam veteran's troubled psyche.
>>
>>11557884
I'm thinking that too. It's an early version of Airborne in different colors
>>
>>11557922
except Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow fought in the first episodes that Storm Shadow first appeared in, before Spirit showed up.
Yeah, maybe they did push Spirit because he's a brand new character... but why make him Storm Shadow's rival? Fucking retarded.

Nevermind that Snake Eyes was already a fan-favorite by then, hence getting him a brand new figure the next year. Oh, but they make Quick Kick Storm Shadow's rival the next season? Ok... and Snake Eyes continues barely being a thing who gets his ass beat all the time, because he's an overglorified background character.

Again, the cartoon did almost nothing with him because he couldn't speak.

>some interviews do give the impression of some sort of rivalry between the cartoon people and the comic people.
I know that Hama routinely shit talked the retards who made the cartoon, but never the other way around.

>>11557934
exactly
>>
>>11557922
Snake Eyes was also a new toy in 1985, but in that cartoon season it was still Sprit/SS. Sunbow approached Snake Eyes as a commando, not a ninja. I personally liked it that way. And even the comic books started Snake Eyes as a Vietnam vet who got burned in a napalm accident, and not a ninja. That didn't come until later.

>There's something just mildly unsettling about the armor and the proportions of the head on that figure.
Nullifier has always been creepy-looking to me, as if it was an alien figure from a different line. So I find it totally beleivable that it was meant for Cobra-La. It just doesn't fit in at all, and neither did Darklon with his narrow green head. And both had very alien-looking vehicles.
>>
>>11557972
It even looks like alien writing on his chestplates before Hasbro decided to re-use him as a "human" figure.

The fact that they produced figures and vehicles for more Cobra-La tells you that they intended to continue it instead of having it be an "epic decisive battle with final end" in the movie. But the market ended up not liking the new spin-off group. Seriously what the hell could a kid do with this thing?

Thanks. The face mold is obviously chunkier though and the chest is different. I can see the helmet though, and see what you're saying. I wonder if there are more pics of proto-Gomer Airborne.

I'm so glad the space shit was abandoned back then. It ruins the line and makes it a complete farce. Yes, the cartoon did a lot of dumb shit too, but the toys and cards made a lot of that ignorable

The funny thing is we have a real space force now as a branch of the US military. No one's saying what they do or what they use, but they're there. And that's one of the few Trump creations that Biden didn't erase and undo within his first month of office. So the space shuttle could be "plausible sci-fi" for the time looking back now.

There's been a space department in the military for decades, long before RAH even, it just wasn't a branch of its own. And the air force's X-15 was a spacecraft by the same technicality that makes Katy Perry an astronaut.
The idea of the military going to space is not that outlandish in itself, of course G.I.Joe did a lot of silly things with it.
