What’s on the workbench, /toy/?

Sculpts, castings, original plushies, 3D prints, dioramas, mods, kitbashes, and repaints are all welcome!

Post WIPs, finished projects, ideas, techniques, ask for advice, and most of all, have fun!

HELPFUL TIPS:
-Invest in a rotary tool such as a dremel for sanding/sculpting, especially a flexible extension tip.
-Pin vises for drilling holes can be found at hobby stores like Hobby Lobby and are great for making peg holes.
-For soft, flexible parts get Sugru silicone putty and Oyumaru
-Hardware epoxy putties such as Waterweld, KwikWood, and PlasticWeld are similar to milliput, greenstuff, and apoxie, can be cheaper some times, and can be found at local hardware stores such as Lowes, Ace, and Home Depot.
-Bootleg figures make great custom-fodder, especially if the legit figures are pricey.
-Body-chan/kun, Figma Archetype He/She, and Sozai-chan/kun are great base bodies for import-style human characters.

-For 3D models to use for editing, the following sites are good to bookmark:

So I'm working on a custom Batman inspired from Battinson that's meant to evoke Hasbro's style of figures. It's more or less done, but right now I'm genuinely torn between using a fabric or plastic cape. On one hand, the wired fabric cape gives more posing options, on the other hand the plastic cape cuts a nice silhouette around the collar/cowl. It's worth noting that the plastic cape isn't glued down to the edges so it should sit even more flush if I end up going with that option. For the fabric cape, this is about as flat as I can adjust its folds around the shoulders.

I kinda asked about this in the Marvel general, but I'm curious for people's advice and which one looks better? While I originally planned this custom with the fabric cape in mind, later I found myself really liking how the plastic cape forms a nice silhouette around the head/neck area with how clean it looks laying flush around the collar. I already own the Mafex, Figuarts 2.0, and Mezco 1/12, so it's not like this will be my only Battinson figure. In this case, I guess I'm more concerned on the balance of functionality vs aesthetics. Thoughts?

Cooking up a thicc preggers amazon that I’m just going to sell for others to tinker with, no joints or breaks in the sculpt, just Boolean however you want.

The actual interesting part is that this started as an edited tracing of a pregnant milf character from an Agata manga one-shot, drawn in MSPaint. Said drawing was fed into the Tencent AI 3D model generator with a few tries. Once I got it mostly to my liking I downloaded the STL and did some tweaks (original model was in a non-symmetrical pose with arms tucked in) before reverse-engineering it to where it is now. I’m really impressed how well the Tencent AI modeling can be most of the time, though there are some tricks that need to be utilized sometimes. With how well it can make 3D models of IRL faces, illustrations, photoshopped subjects, etc for base models to start from (and for free) it’s a godsend.

My first thought is the figure looks slightly too small for the head, maybe it's just the angle but the plastic cape gives the illusion that he's bigger.

Yeah I can't tell if it's back lighting making the head look wider and/or it's me fucking up the camera focus so it ended up with a fisheye effect. I initially used smaller heads (around Bucky Cap scale) but they ended up making the body look way too buff so I settled on the Mezco head instead. If nothing else, I don't mind the thinner frame resembling Battinson.

Yeah I was thinking the plastic cape made him look "bigger". I think it's because of the wide shape and the thickness of the plastic which is what's creating the illusion of broader shoulders.

Real glad to see this back. got some advice in another thread about a ball joint that simply refuses to stay in, pops right back out, and trying to maybe dig it a little deeper. I'm hoping this spherical bit is the right thing to use... roughly looks like this.
>>
>>11565764
hot damn dude, you know those movies never really explored the relationship between happy meal toys and 'real' toys, did they.. especially 'of the same character'
>>11565936
the eternal struggle. I think you nailed the flow of the fabric cape, so that one wins in my mind. but I wish someone made a version that like.. the part at the neck is plastic, then the amount of plastic-soaked-into-fabric decreases in a gradient, until it's normal fabric down past the shoulders.. Does anyone know if that would work? I mean that's how we used to make raincoats, minus the gradient obviously.
>>
>>11566993
how would anyone ever know? he also ran it through a chinese AI. I hope he's not gonna charge much for it, because yeah some work went in, but..
>>
>>11567119
>I wish someone made a version that like.. the part at the neck is plastic, then the amount of plastic-soaked-into-fabric decreases in a gradient, until it's normal fabric down past the shoulders..
Yeah it's really frustrating. If I could somehow mix the smooth sculpt of the top part of the plastic cape until it cleanly flows down into a fabric one, that would be ideal. Bandai "sort of" tried with their SHF 1.0 but the plastic portion just wasn't flush enough and it just looked too bulky, like a shell over his shoulders.
>>
>>11565936
>>11566439
The shoulders and neck on the fabric cape look decent, but also if you're going to pose him in any dynamic way, the plastic is just not going to look good. I say stick with the fabric
>>
>>11566993
While it was a tracing, it was also heavily edited with many parts. The original pic never showed the knees-down and also had hands cradling the pregnant belly with the arms overall thinner. The puffy vulva was a my own doing, the original's pussy nowhere near as plump. I also made it a tad curvier than Agata had in the bust, belly, and hips. At this point it's hardly the same as the original pic.

>>11567124
I won't be charging much, probably just $5 or $6usd for both a SFW version with a the vulva crease removed and a NSFW version that keeps the vag slit and will have sculpted nipples. Even with the AI generator I still had to make changes to the sculpt like adding the thigh gap for allowing modelers to separate the legs for adding articulation along with chopping up and re-sculpting the arms from their original pose (the armpits on this are 100% scratch-designed since the original arms were tucked in to the torso). Besides, this is just for users to mess with on their own and make their own custom designs from. When I eventually articulate this and sell it it'll be priced like my usual stuff and made for Sculpteo SLS nylon printing.
>>
>>11567202
okay cool, I like that. tossing somebody a fiver for a model they worked on is super cool. i've done that for like, instrux for a custom lego design
>>
>>11567222
Yeah, this isn’t what pays my bills. I like making some pocket change for my stuff, and the sales’ money has come in handy for emergencies. My fully-articulated action figures are usually only $12 or so which gives me $10 net-profit per download, because personally I don’t want to be cost-prohibitive to 3D print anons who are just getting started in this hobby.
>>
>>11567303
yeahhh 3d printing.. yeahh.. the barrier to entry is not low enough yet, but someday.. i'll be able to make fuckin ANYTHING.
and if I actually manage to have kids, i'll be able to make them accessories for THEIR toys.
>>
>>11567191
Thanks. While I think it looked okay, I really wasn't sure if the fabric sat decently on the figure and was curious for people's opinions so I appreciate your input. For now, I've actually glued down some folds of the fabric onto eacch other so the top portion can maintain its shape on the shoulders while still allowing a good range for the wire to be posed around.
>>
>>11567660
that makes total sense, as long as it doesn't soak through and ruin the look. I bet they even do something similar in movies.

I'm working on my first custom figure ever and I have a couple questions I'm hoping you guys can help me with.

1: What's the best way to strip paint from a Marvel Legends figure? I usually use Simple Green for models, but ML figures are a different plastic so I wanted to check if there's a better option for them

2: After it's stripped I want to dye it. All the videos I watched about dying figures say you need to cook them at significantly lower temperature than the dye instructions say, but none of them have any specifics. I don't suppose there's a good rule of thumb, like, "don't go over 150 degrees" or anything like that?
>>
>>11568498
working on a coomer fig there are you?
>>
>>11568500
yeah, a latex drone. This is going to Latex Drone MkI, the prototype. If it works I'll try casting the head so I don't need to buy a ton of GI Joe Firefighters just for the gas mask, and I'll switch to the upcoming Emma Frost figure as the base body, and that'll be Latex Drone MkII, the production model.

And if that goes well I have some ideas for building a dronification station and making a little tableau
>>
>>11566438
Which company is the batman from? He looks good
>>
>>11568498
I use diluted acetone and qtips. Move your tip fast and don't slob the liquid. Acetone will still eat at plastic, but only create tiny imperfections. You can then sand the imperfections away
>>
>>11568504
that takes me back. havent seen latex fetish in nigh on 15 years.
>>
Not great lighting but here's two dioramas I made for some NECA figures: >>11568939
Still might print off some background images for them. The lighting is powered by standard LED strips you can cut into segments, and then wrapped in coloured cellophane.
>>
>>11567114
Ah! i think i know what you're referring to specifically, is it the Figma Fluted Knight? if so let me tell you i did the same, i used a slightly bigger dreml bit, it made the socket a bit bigger and it didn't pop off since, i also did add a bit of varnish on the ball joint, but i was just being careful, if you wish to try be careful
>>
>>11568525
He's a mix of parts: Mezco The Batman head, ML 80th Invincible Iron Man upper torso/arms, McFarlane The Batman gauntlets/bat emblem/cape collar/utility belt, Black Series TLJ Kylo Ren lower torso/legs.
>>
>>11568915
Why, when I was your age, there was latex babes all around this country! You'd go the theatre and say "One ticket for Underworld, please" and you'd pay your five dollars to watch a lady in latex do spin kicks for an hour and a half. But you kids wouldn't know about that. You're too busy with your vtubers and Russian murder cults to enjoy the simple pleasure of a beautiful woman head to toe in skintight latex....
>>
>>11568958
pretty gnarly.
>>11568976
nope, it was a zoid kit, so I have to be even more careful. model kit plastic is soft enough to saw or drill by hand after all (though people act like you can x-acto knife it up and no you fucking cant)
though it was a hard, springy sprue of that real tough kinda plastic, so that helps.
>>
>>11569021
Ah! funny thing, i did the exact same thing with a zoid too, if this is the case, i suggest using a drill instead of a dreml, the kind you can control with a finger, so you can be as slow as possible, since it's delicate, i wish you the best
>>
>>11568997
NTA but man I wish I had a nice figure of my waifu. She is wearing a latex-like bodysuit with some accessories over it.
>>
>>11569043
I feel like you could get pretty close, albeit not in those specific proportions. If you were willing to go more standard human proportions I don't think that would be too hard
>>
>>11568993
Wow, couldn't even tell it was a custom. Really nice work!
>>
>>11569060
Thanks! For the body, I definitely tried to combine parts with sculpted details that somewhat resembled Battinson's suit without going for complete movie accuracy. Like it resembles the movie suit enough at a glance until you start scrutinizing the details.
>>
>>11569036
ohhhhhhhhh, put my spherical bit into my pin vise?
that's not a bad idea, though I think it's going to just slide into the center where i THINK there's already a hole (like to let air in for the ball joint, you know how they do)
i'll think about that. pin vises are great for some things.

If you want clear saliva, get Games Workshop's (the Warhammer people) technical paint 'ardcoat. It's a gloss varnish that when applied in multiple coats makes a great clear gross slime. The pic is a model covered in 100 coats of the stuff.

If you want green saliva, they also make something called Nurgle's Rot. Which is the same as 'ardcoat but tinged a sickly green.

>>
>>11569442
definitely an interesting way to do a wrist.. but wouldn't it be better if the ball were smaller?
>>
>>1156966
I could certainly try making it a bit smaller; now that I look at it, it is a bit bulbous. It's 4.5mm diameter at the moment. Maybe I should shrink it to 4 or 3.5 and replace the split-mushroom-peg (or whatever you call those) with a simple 1mm hole to use a wire pin with.
Might need to print some test designs of just the wrist joints.

Alright I was hoping to find a gentler paint stripping method than acetone. I really don't want to risk damaging the figure and I know Simple Green will strip paint off a plastic model no problem. So I took this spare body I had, let it soak in Simple Green for 24 hours, then gave it a vigorous toothbrush scrubbing.

Here's the before pic on the left, after pic on the right

OK I am abandoning my latex drone figure idea. I got prescribed a mild amphetamine, and I just found out that can cause hypersexual thoughts. Which would explain this sudden desire for horny action figures, and why I've recently taken up gooning as a hobby out of nowhere. So I'm pretty sure that when I'm off the pills I will be very embarrassed to own a bunch of handmade latex drone action figures with sculpted chastity cage bulges.

Good luck on all your projects, anons.
>>
>>11569926
this mild amphetamine.. what kind of problem might one need to convince a doc- I mean need to HAVE in order to get a prescription? Also is there a comedown? Asking for a friend.
>taken up-
that's called having a functional system. You're supposed to do that. I'M supposed to do that.. but it's.. hard now. Er- it's not- you know what I mean.

That said, yeah. I mean it would be embarrassing to have something that is both the current and original definition of 'fetish.' I only have one anime girl figurine. It's probably best not to mix that with anything that costs money.
>>
>>11569952
Weight loss. It's working great on that. And no comedown, it's one pill in the morning, and for the rest of the day I have no food cravings and general hunger is significantly reduced. It's also replaced caffeine completely. It's a goddamn wonder drug. Aside from the gooning.

And when I say I took up gooning, I mean like 4 hours a day. I used to jerk off for the normal amount of time.

>aside from
THAT IS THE BEST PART, YOU MOOK. You'll understand when you're 40, or if you're dumb enough to take heartburn pills.

>4 hours a day
... what? it removes the refractory period? because... there are people who would kill for that, but that sounds terrifying. I guess that helps with weight loss, though. How the fuck doesn't it just hurt? There's no way an amphetamine is speeding up the actual healing and recharge..
>>
>>11569972
I'm 37 man. And I actually was taking omeprazole for the past couple weeks.

And it doesn't remove the refractory period, it's more like I'll jerk off for two hours in the morning and the same again in the evening. Often longer in the evening. Each session, like a normal masturbation session, involves cumming only once at the end. Absolutely fantastic orgasms each time, just out of this world.

And yeah I have started to get some painful spots on my dick. It's not a good thing to do! Don't goon, folks!
>>
>>11569977
... the refractory period's like a day usually, isn't it? that's the whole point, that's why it's great. You do your shit during the day, you lay with your wife at night, you're good. That's how we're built.
>don't-
look first of all you irritating lego on the carpet, stop talking like a drooling gen Z retard. it's called masturbation. secondly, you -have- to do it regularly or you get problems and/or it happens on its own.
>>
>>11569977

that's priapism, dude. that's gonna blow out your sponge blood thingies. I forget the name of them. It's supposed to hurt when it takes that long, the little muscular valves in your veins cramp up and slam all the way shut instead of just restricting.

double knees are better because the kneecap is naturalistic anyway. Though having a big gouge in the the popliteals is okay since there's a visible joint there on people..

Thank you! As it happens I've basically got her finished (I hope). Need to make some more alt hands and chest pieces, but assuming the engineering and tolerances are all good, she's basically done. Need to test print now.
FWIW I am aware the joints aren't very pretty, however I find Blender usually makes everything look worse than it actually is so hopefully it looks better printed in person. Also because she's quite small (the pinholes at the joints are for 1mm wire, to give an idea of size) I daren't make her much daintier; even Resione stuff has its limits.

That's partially due to the divots I added to allow for some shoulder range, as they're on ball-joints ala Figma. This body is meant for small characters anyway so hopefully it'll look OK with appropriate figure heads.

we'll see. you might print out a test and decide it looks better with the shoulders wider, but yeah if I take the joints into account, they are wider than the hips, so. can't really complain.
wait what are those internal pelvic joints? drop-down you say? like, for high kicks?
>>
>>11570840
Yeah; each hip is on an L-shaped double ended ball-stem. The torso end sits in a channel it can slide up and down in to allow for greater movement and to work around the solid pelvis piece. It's been done before with girlpla, so I figured I'd try it myself.
>>
>>11570845
some people are cool with that.. to me, it's never quite right before what actually needs to happen is a hinged flap has to open up in the abdomen. and obviously that aint happening. Unless the entire hip socket connects to a cut-in joint or something
Personally I really wanna see shoulders similar to this, so they can raise upward in addition to butterflying. so many things, swords held up, superhero flight poses, just look dumb when all you do is rotate the arm up

if you want my advice, and I don't think you do because this will fucking suck to do, you gotta carve the left side of his torso off with joint intact, add a buncha putty, then secure the original back on. No idea if this would have good structure integrity, I suggest screws in the putty. But the point is, the big arm needs a big scapular process, or it just doesn't feel dynamic and cool.. just tacked on.

Same person? Acetone is what everyone uses on ML. It's fine and works well. Just don't leave it on for more than a couple seconds. Wipe with a acetone soaked Qtip, wipe with a wet paper towel soaked in water to remove any acetone left over, dry with a dry paper towel, and repeat. The harder torso plastics ae what you need to be really careful with since those degrade in acetone after a few seconds. The softer limbs and heads can withstands at least 10-20 seconds without damage so those are simpler.

What are you trying to dye? The first pic is almost all black plastic so dye won't do a thing to those parts. But a pot with boiling water, some acetone (like 1/4 or 1/5 the amount of water in the pot is what I've heard somewhere but you'd need to find a tutorial to double check), and some dish soap along with the Synthetics RIT dye. You'll have to just keep an eye on the parts soaking over several minutes to a few hours to see when each part has absorbed enough dye. Different plastics will absorb the dye at different rates. Then wash them really really well with soap and water. Some even put the parts in a sock and tie it off then run it through the washing machine. No joke. Then let the parts soak in water for at least 24 hours to see if any dye seeps out. After that, dry and clear coat with some matte spray before painting over top.

Have you ever tried Isopropyl alcohol? I've seen some people say it works and is safer than acetone.

I want the figure all black. Everything I've seen has said you should NOT boil the water because that makes the figure melt. Unfortunately they aren't specific at all about how hot you actually do want it. I hadn't seen the tip about letting the figure soak afterwards, that makes a ton of sense, thanks.
>>
>>11571412
>IPA
No, i don't think that'll work. I use 91% IPA for resin print clean up and that won't strip paint off figures. Maybe 99% will with repeated scrubbing, but acetone is instant. Just wipe it on and the painted detail comes right off.

>Everything I've seen has said you should NOT boil the water because that makes the figure melt.
Boiling water is not hot enough to melt any of these plastics. You want it just under the boiling point I guess, but it won't melt plastics. It can deform super soft plastic like hair or capes, but that can be put back into the proper shape while it's cooling. Everyone is using boiling or close to boiling water to pop figures apart so it's not harmful. Thankfully dyeing black will be easiest, just be aware that over time (many months or years), the dye can seep out of the figure parts and ruin lighter colors painted over it. Especially black dye. So give the dyed parts a super good wash and let them soak for 24-48 hours to be extra sure as much dye that wills seep out has done so before you give it a clear coat before painting.

Been having some...difficulties with printing; massively oversupported the parts (to the point the rather thin pelvis overlays just instantly shattered when I tried removing them) and on top of that I let my resin get too cold, leading to major adhesion issues. Whoops! Ordered a resin heater to help with that now we're entering Autumn.
On the plus side I did get some parts printed, including a bunch of spares, meaning I'll be able to get a complete first figure soon.
A few things I've noted:
>Wrists work very well, definitely going to use these in future.
>Hip system seems a winner but need to see how it works with the overlay.
>Speaking of, I need to majorly thicken/reinforce the pelvis shell so it doesn't instantly break when you try and remove the supports. At present it's absurdly delicate. I've done this style before so I have no idea how I managed to screw up quite this badly, though the too-thick supports didn't help.
>Ankles work but are a touch loose. I'm tempted to redesign them slightly and trade the pin-secured hinge for a click-together one.
>Out of frame (only the NSFW version printed properly...) but the chest assembly works, however I need to adjust the tolerance between the shoulder ball and the socket as at present it's much, much too tight.
>The shoulder hinges work quite well once put together but are tricky and fragile-feeling to assemble.
Overall though I'm actually very impressed with how it's coming along. Also I actually don't have THAT much extra to reprint; the pelvises, the SFW chest, a left foot, a torso barbell and slightly smaller balljoints for the shoulders.
Once I've got the design down I'm planning on sculpting a swimsuit version for my Figma Ika Musume. She was my second ever Figma (though I hamhanded her and my current one is a replacement) and I loved the show, but always wished she could cast-off given how often she was in the swimsuit.

>>
>>11573185

>>
Do dioramas count as customs?
>>
>>11573653
Mechanically identical. Needs less exposure during printing because it's a pale fleshtone; good because prints faster, bad because easier to overexpose. Regardless, very good resin.
Speaking of! I got my resin heater set up and printed a full plate of parts, with not a single failure- I now have the components to make 4(!) bodies! Tomorrow, once the cured resin has fully "settled" I'll assemble one and see how it works. I made a few very minor revisions (notably adding reinforcement bracing to the pelvis pieces, re-tolerancing the shoulder balljoints and lengthening the neck) so we'll see how it goes.
>>
>>11573657
Yeah!
>>
>>11573448
Dyes do fade over time. I'm not sure if there's a trick to preventing it but keeping the figure out of bright light would slow the fading. Maybe a top coat of some kind?

you mean a diorama gaming room for figures, or some form of customizing an actual room, or... figures that... belong.... in a gaming room? Sorry I've never understood the gaming room concept. Having to move to a separate part of the house to game seems like a total pain.

Gaming room is an ambiguous term that could apply to video games or tabletop games.

But really, you are seeking to build a 1/12th video game room for your action figures. I don't look down on that at all, I'm in this thread too, I think that's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. But I also understand it's not the sort of hobby you can have and look down on other people who have different nerd craft hobbies.

Articulation works across the board. Need to adjust some tolerances here and there (nothing's wearing out but some pegs are too tight or too loose without some work) but that is somewhat inevitable with resin printing.

Having assembled two more from the parts I have discovered an additional design flaw; the thigh-socket walls are too thin. They don't break or friction-grind, but the constant tension causes them to very, very subtly deform outwards and loosen. Fortunately as it's an engineering error and not a material problem per se, it's a very easy fix as all I need to do is thicken the socket walls.
