On a side note, this is probably the last lego set i will ever buy and i regret buying it already.
I saw memes of lego being dogshit trash now since they moved the production to China but actually seeing it firsthand is something else.
LITERALLY every single piece, like the conductors cap or the green pieces on the nose of the train have those disgusting white "separation" spots, kinda like when you're making a plastic model kit and you just cut the piece from the gate before you paint it over. Only the best is good enough my ass, i cannot believe how hard lego has fallen.

China wasn't really the main problem I don't think. If you're in the US, most of the bricks come out of the Mexican factory, IIRC, and those are supposedly some of the worst. There is supposed to be a new factory opening in the US this year, so the sets in the US should have parts sourced from that factory. Hopefully the QC is better, because the Mexican factory is considered the bottom rung, IIRC.
>>
>>11664490
Oh who would have guessed the Mexicans that only care about stealing the minifigs and backstabbing their own mother for a nickel and blow would run such a horrible factory
>>
>>11663796
thread pic is absolute dogshit
I rebuilt this little set from my childhood today
>>
>>11664512
>>11664490
I think different pieces are made in different factories. I think the CMFs are all made in China because they need that mass production. I think fuck huge sets are made in Mexico because of the weight and it's easier to move them across North America.
>>
>>11664490
No, I think the Mexican factory is doing well but the problem is that it was the testing ground for brittle brown and other colors because Lego was being cheap or they were too stupid to realize their new color mixes were defective. My opinion is that they were trying to find a cheaper way to make colors since they're going full faggotry with shit like bio degradable foliage and paper bags (which they should have done YEARS ago). Also the little marks on the pieces are from ALL the factories because lego now demands faster output for pieces.
>>
>>11664530
So, we're cooked?

I also managed to complete most of this set finally. I loved this submarine as a kid so it's very cathartic to finally have it again. I'm missing some pieces from one of the divers as well as the seafloor part of the set, but I'm not too worried about that honestly.
>>

I wasn't aware it was a rare piece. Honestly I never had the entire set nor the instructions for it (nor any of the other wing/plow pieces that I have) so I never knew what to do with it as a kid but I always thought they were quite neat. I want to reconstruct some of the sets that I have that use them eventually.

this generally makes toylines sell fewer toys.

Back in the day, a movie's release was great advertisement for a toyline just by raising awareness that the movie exists. Kids would seek out movie line toys or notice movie line toys easier, due to advertisements for the movie and people generally talking about a movie.
So you'd have 1-24weeks (depending on how good the movie is or how ticket sales are) of heightened awareness due to the movie being out in theaters and all the advertsiments for it. This generally kept a toyline constantly selling for all those weeks/months.

Once the movie left theaters, after 3-5 months, there was usually a lull in toy sales. But sales would rise up again with the DVD/BD release, because everyone now wants to see it again in their home. So that's another month of heightened awareness and increased sales for the toylines.

So toylines associated with a movie would sell extremely well for 9 or 12 months, due to how all the hype and advertisements that came from the movie releases.

If Netflix compacts a movie's releases into just 3 weeks... well, that's just 3 weeks of heightened awareness and advertisements for movie licensed products instead of 24 weeks + 1 month.

Netflix's goal is to increase subscriber numbers with their plans for WB and it's extremely short sightened, because everyone else is screwed over. Movie theaters. Toy companies. Commemorative plate companies. etc.
Even the movie studios get fucked over, because once upon a time, DVD/BD sales used to be able to fund sequels even if the movie itself bombed in theaters. That's how big home video sales used to be, but becasue everyone wanted to be the next Netflix, well... they fucked themselves over by turning to streaming. This is part of why WB needed to sell itself off, because they killed a very big source of revenue/profit.
>>

Because of how fucking stupid of an idea it is and how it will inevitably blow up in their fucking faces. Nobody outside of nintendo consoomers likes those shitty mario sets. I dont give a fuck about mario as a franchise but objectively those sets look like ass because they opted not to have mario minifigs but had those shitty blocky electronic sloppa instead. That schtick wont work for other franchises that are more critical of their properties merch unlike nintendo fanboys thatll buy whatever piece of crap that has bing bing wahoos face on it. Even ignoring the larger price tag its a redundant gimmick thatll just get in the way of most peoples enjoyment of lego and be more of a nuisance then anything else desu.

>>
>>11664773
>and appealing characters
How are they appealing when they have the depth and personality of cardboard? Hell Nintendo wont even let mario date princess peach anymore and that was the one characterization they had going for them. Nintendo is such a stale wet sponge of a company
>>
>>11664776
okay anon, they're a soulless corporation peddling digital toys to children
now let's here why your children's videogame of choice is superior and shouldn't be linger in nintendo's shadow
>>
>>11664776
Basic archetypes appeal to kids.
Mario is heroic and optimistic, Luigi is cowardly, Yoshi is cute, Bowser is cool and scary. They're all colourful and have wide appeal, it's really no wonder kids like the lego sets. I don't think they appeal to adult Nintendo fans at all 2bh, most adult Nintendo fans I see want Mario minifigs and that's about it.
>>
>>11664777
>now let's here why your children's videogame of choice is superior and shouldn't be linger in nintendo's shadow
I dont play video games anymore. I think gaming as a medium is intensely overrated and its rise in popularity has had negative consequences to society since now every other superior medium of entertainment media is being overshadowed and ignored by gaming slop. But if i had to chose a favorite game from when i did play them as a kid it would unironically be lego star wars.
>>
>>11664779
That’s what I don’t get why they hype for a minifig you’re just going to put on a shelf? In a box?
What’re you going to do with a minifigure Mario? Make your own courses and pretend to save the princess from bowser? Guess what… that’s what the sets currently do. I’m not a fan of the pivot to mariokart but the Mario sets are fun.

This is the end of Lego. They have been trying for years to be everything but a toy company.
>>
>>11664808
The thing is lego wants these people but they'll also never stop buying so they don't really need to care about their opinions. If they wanted to throw them a bone they could always just change the printing a bit or something, but also if you're collecting just for he value of a minifigure then what was your motivation for buying the set while supposedly being a long time LotR fan. If none were exclusive then would you not have bought the set at all?

that works both ways. Lego sometimes "tries" to make prints "more useful for MOCs" but then screw it up and they don't put boob lines on Dr. Crusher? Troi got boob line. This is the only blue Starfleet uniform, and it's used for only Beverly Crusher. why NOT put the boob lines on it? oh, so you can MOC your own blue-shirt character. (for $400? seriously?)

this blue Starfleet torso should have had boob lines (and they should have made a new print red-uniform for Ro Laren, too!)

Lego production is soooo slow, they have to plan years in advance. they often have to guess what will be "popular"

if I were Lego, I would focus on increasing production speed, rather than electronic bricks. they NEED quicker turn-around time. imagine the boss saying "We need KDH sets on shelves NOW!"
week 1 - brainstorm sets, design new elements, finalize product
week 2 - make molds, set up factory to produce pieces, print bricks (??)
week 3 - instruction book finalized, first-run elements from factory sent to facilitate box art (assuming box art is not all digital by now?)
week 4 - Quality check production assembly? factory starts mass production
week 5 - maximize production (?) leverage network of salespeople to ensure stores order sets, sets start shipping out
week 6 - in the customer's hand!!! Gunna Be Gunna Be Golden!
>>

lol obviously.
b-but the angry boss yells.
"MAKE IT HAPPEN!"

if you sit the guy in a chair, and get out a stopwatch, it's reasonable to assume this is possible. is that one guy responsible for designing multiple elements? hire another guy.

whatever machine makes the molds? part-by-part, that can't be more than one thing, right? do they have to mix chemicals physically taking weeks? no? do it. make that mold. NOW. they are busy making molds for something else? hire another guy. or just do mold-making-tech yourself.

the whole thing reminds me of television production. Star Trek The Next Generation did those episodes in ONE WEEK. every week, 24 episodes a year. script, sets, makeup, actors filming, post-production special effects. ONE FREAKING WEEK. next episode! and now? it takes Netflix or HBO 3 years to make 10 episodes of some garbage that's a lot worse than what people did 30 years ago much faster.

speed IS possible. Do it.
>>
>>11665016
Because of speed we get molds that crack now, they don't let the plastic to get cold and molding machines are overused. You are nuts.

the pincer guys are cool but the lava-red shoulder armor should have been either tan or dark grey

green guys with big head/eyes are cool but the printed crooked teeth bother me. they should be sticking out of the head looking like that, but instead they are flat (?) looks a little over-designed (um, um... let's add teeth!!)

snakes are a mess. too bubbly round, they look like space monsters and the four eyes are confusing being part of the clear rounded stuff all around the rest of the head. I like the lime/purple colors scheme though

aaaaaand the hooded guys are alright. the graphics on the torsos are not specific enough, in a good way. they should be able to be used for other MOCs and not be seen as "those Ninjago guys" like most of the Ninjago prints

five years ago:
>As you know, we launched LEGO VIDIYO in January to connect with children in a completely new way, blending music, digital play and LEGO building in a fun and unique way. The product tested extremely well during development and has received really positive feedback from those children and families who have played with it.

four years ago:
>In July 2021 we decided to pause the LEGO VIDIYO roll-out to review performance and test new ideas. Through the extensive quantitative and qualitative research we have undertaken in the previous months, we have gained an enormous amount of learnings in terms of the music & content creation space and what it would take to succeed with the play experience, our go-to-market strategy in 2023 and not least how to build a sustainable business based on the VIDIYO experience.
>Based on these insights we have decided to discontinue the physical VIDIYO products from January 31st 2022

Depends. Mario sells, so who knows. I wonder if this fails, how much will it affect LEGO? Will this be the final nail in the coffin for their tech-bro gimmicks?

Apparently they spent more than $500 million developing it, which makes me inclined to believe LEGO will keep it around even if it fails, because cancelling it would make them look bad, like Dreamzzz, which they also spent a fortune developing. Stop complaining about smart bricks

>The teaser video is pretty cryptic with sleek black renders of LEGO elements and minifigure hands, as well as quotes from kids.

>Daniel, 8 “How does it do that”
>Lauren, 7 “It sounds like it’s actually talking”
>Noah, 7 “It’s very impressive”

>The fact that this is being unveiled at CES, plus the quotes and ages of the kids give us a clue to what to expect: some sort of smart LEGO/minifigure which can talk or make sounds.

>I think it’s also really important to zero in on the ages of the people providing quotes. 7 and 8 year olds, which is likely the target audience for whatever LEGO is unveiling.

>Expect to see a lot of AFOLs and adults embarrassing themselves in the comments section of social media in the teaser, as they get outraged about a kids toy with some tech and smarts in them that wasn’t designed with adults in mind.

One thing I think the issue is that they lack customizability. Legs and torso are stuck together, and hands can't be rotated or swapped. They are also much bigger than minifigs so the play pattern needs to be upscaled to work for their size. Then there is the "Grrrr! This is different!"

They don't actually mention that the smart bricks themselves are AI, just a 'smart play system'. I'm guessing this means a phone app that accesses AI on a server. The same app is likely used with the smart bricks.
Maybe the AI will be able to generate a voiceline or sound from a prompt which goes into the smart brick. Maybe it has Chat TLG which will write a smart brick program for you based on your description so it reacts how you want. Maybe the app will use your photo of your Lego spaceship and generate an image of it in space.

I bought the Wednesday roof room set and one of her arms was not attached. I pressed it into the torso, and it's kinda snug, but it made me wonder if the Friends arms can be pulled apart and swapped like regular minifigs. even though, technically, Lego doesn't approve of the arm-swaps (hands and leg/hips, either) on regular minifigs.

I haven't had the courage to try and rip the arms off my other minidolls yet. they seem really fragile, even if it "works" it's probably going to ruin a couple eventually

>>11666540
>Will we get kpop demon hunters minifigs or only minidolls?
the "rumor" (official leak) said minidolls but I have to think they'd be insane to not also do minifigs. once they do the custom hair pieces, it's easy to do prints on regular minifigs torsos. Lego eventually did Wicked minifigs even if it was the super-expensive sets, and Disney Princess minifigs

You can boil some water and then put it in a coffee mug. Let water heat the mug and soak Minidoll in hot water. Then gently pull the arm away from shoulder. >Time to get into what makes this brick unique — it has a chip that's smaller than a Lego stud. And they're considering this an addition to the current system. There are three parts: the brick, the "tag" and the minifig.
Oh boy
>>
>>11666678
>The Lego Smart Tag and Smart Minifig both have code inside that defines its behaviors. And we're getting a look at a Smart Brick with a Smart Tag on it that generates sound — the Brick has a tiny speaker. Examples of how this might work would be a car engine that revs or a cat that purrs.

>The Brick can sense a Smart Minifigure, and respond to where it is placed. It has light, sound and color sensors.
>>
>The bricks also automatically form a decentralized network — they can all talk to each other as long as they're close enough.

>A good example of how this will work is that if you're having a race, the bricks can tell who crosses a finish line first.

Okay, what's the point of it?
They're gonna induce schizophrenia in little kids when their lego bricks start talking to one another? What is even the point of bricks "knowing where they are in a 3d space"? Who asked for this shit?

New set
>>
>It’s highly unlikely they’ll stop at a few Lego Star Wars sets. The Lego Group is calling the new computer bricks “the most significant evolution in the Lego System-in-Play since the introduction of the Lego Minifigure in 1978,” and there are unconfirmed rumors that the upcoming Lego Pokémon sets will be the next to get them. The company already quietly piloted them in 2024 in a Lego City set, too.

>“Lego Smart Play will continue to expand through new updates, launches and technology,” the company writes.

they ruined those sets by using "baby" faces

I would have bought a bunch of them if they had regular-faces

also they were lazy and did helmets for all of them, instead of like, a construction hat, fireman's hat, and maybe the police guy would get away with a white helmet...

somebody at Lego has the idea that they need to "keep up" with technology. since the toy industry in general is showing signs of implosion, with babies using digital tablets instead of blocks, for example

so somebody (?) is "desperate" to make Lego more digital. there have already been several failures (Vidiyo, Hidden Side, Dimensions) for various reasons, but Lego is still insistent on being some-kind-of-computer-thing, anyway
