Zoomer who broke out of his dark ages awhile ago, decided I wanted to start collecting vintage sets (anything pre fleshie era). As I've been getting back into the hobby these past few months something that has stood out to me is just how disppropotionate the demand for classic city is compared to every other vintage theme. Trying to collect for space, castle, pirates, western, or basically any other system theme is insanely costly but whenever I look into city it's dirt cheap in comparison. I always imagined city as a theme has been lego's most dominant original theme, I guess until Bioncle or Ninjago I guess, why is there no market for this theme? For modern city builders I guess I can see why they wouldn't want the visual clash but do classic city diorama people just not exist?
>>11734794my guess is it's the "expensive, 1st, only-option-at-the-time" to get Mario MINIFIG FINALLY!!! AAAHHH!!!!!can't blame them for doing it. if it works, it works. why blow the Mario minifig launch on a $80 set when you can milk it for twice as much?
>>11734808>do classic city diorama people just not exist? They do, but there was far more City sets made so they are easier to come by vs the old cult classic lines
Lego Hololive when?
>>11734808my guess would be that people who would be nostalgic about these sets already got nostalgic around a decade ago or earlier
>>11734906we need more schizophrenic Indonesians in our hobby
>>11734808I'd say it is because for old, more vintage city, the pieces and elements are mostly pretty basic, and can be pretty easily acquired. Space, Castle, and Pirates all had a lot of unusual, specific parts, pieces, and minifigures.
Recent hauls? Finally completed my studios horror collection and found a copy of 1382 with the box. Sadly more then I was hoping for but the box and parts are in pretty good condition so I said fuck it.

Serious question here. Lego technically qualifies torsos as the hands, arms, and torso and legs as the waist and legs. If you separate these these elements into combinations lego has never officially released does that count as "illegal"?
>>11734808I have that carwash.
>>11734977It's debatably heresy if you're extra autistic but I don't think it counts as an illegal building techniqueThough replacing arms/legs does risk damaging them if you do it wrong
Imagine if the minifigure legs only had one pin in the middle which would allow you to rotate the torso. It would be so kino

>>11735002https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAWVBMuepMUAccording to this random review the real torso assemblies do actually have hands attachedhe even calls taking the hands out an illegal technique, so that might be the answer. This guy seems knowledgeable about those sorts of things
Did Iran or China do Lego propaganda videos better? And will TLG sue either of them?
>>11734808It's a combination of>more town sets were made over a longer time period than other themes>town is more boring to most people since it's mundane, so less are interested in it>of those who are interested in town, most do modern City, modular buildings, etc>lots of town sets are unnecessary repeats to the modern builder, eg you don't need more than a couple of fire trucks for your whole town but Lego fire trucks have always been plentiful. Because of this, classic town builders probably just make their own generic buildings out of standard bricks and baseplates instead of using sets. This is harder for pirates/castle because those rely on specific colours (grey) or special parts (ship hulls/sails)
Um, i think i'm gonna buy this today?

>>11735373Because you touch kids. Also, Lego 2014 and Lego 2019 were vastly different companies with very different values.Which is surprising when you consider how successful the Lego Batman movie and Lego ninjago were… oh wait no they shit the bed.
>>11735373the lego movie novelty wore off
>>11735373I thought it was a fine movie, its just that after the magic of the first one, it couldn't really totally be re-captured, but it seemed like it was trying to be a different thing, which was fine.I feel like I am in the minority on this one, but I also thought all of the sets from the first movie were way, way better than most of the ones from the second movie. First movie seemed like it was a celebration of all things and all eras of Lego, which was reflected in the sets (a huge great Pirate ship, a really nice vintage-inspired space ship, even a smaller castle set, and lots of neat city-themed sets). There were some really good sets from the second movie too, but many of them seemed more based on the goofier stuff from the second movie.
>>11735364I wasn't a fan of the technic one, here's hoping this one will pull me in.

>>11735373>Why did this movie fucking bomb?>>11735376>its just that after the magic of the first one, it couldn't really totally be re-captured,the first The Lego Movie was a masterpiece of storytelling, it was going to be impossible to do that again, due to the twist reveal that's it's not really about the Legos, it was the kid and his dad and how they "played" with them. to be fair, the 2nd one gave it a good shot, with how the brother played with the sister (it's a very little-girl-thing to want to marry characters to create peace, for example) and I also thought it was... meh, alright.the "true" sequel (in-spirit) is the Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. which does have the same thing The Lego Movie had, where you think it's about one thing, but it's really about something totally different (in a good way)
>>11735395i have never watched rebuild the galaxy but i own almost every set from it. I just enjoy the new builds with new colours, same minifigs but now different etc its way more fun yhen lukes land speeder #67
>>11735399I didn't watch the 2nd season yet, so I don't know what else they could have done, but it's funny to hear you say that. based on what I know from the 1st season, it's supposed to be cool to have Flame Snowspeeder just because it's neat
>>11735422exactly, im not a huge OT fan and i love these recolours, just never liked the snowspeeder build. i hope they make some legends/ old republic sets under the guise of rebuild the galaxy. Maybe a malgus jedi fury?
>>11734915Thought this was an edit until I had the video suggested to me just now, why are lego youtubers like this?

>>11735424>im not a huge OT fanWhat else could be good enough to make someone want merch of it? Definitely not the prequel or sequel trilogies.
>>11735440prequals def, us zoomers grew up with it. Would love to see some wacky legends ships or opd republic stuff
>>11735446I'm a zoomer myself, born in 99, and think the prequels are shit. They're an amusing watch every once in awhile, saw episode III when it was theatres again, but I can't imagine paying serious money for anything prequel trilogy. As a kid I fell for the building a clone army meme and wasted too much money on boring grey ships and battle packs, nowadays I have nothing SW and only collect lego up to 03. Might pick up the new Bob if I ever see him at a convention though, always liked him as a meme character.
>>11735456the recent mtt is very good, and some of the early movies are a bit more hit and miss but they tried to do something new introduced original creative ideas and added unto others which already existedid really love to see a capital droid ship from the seperatist, from episode 1 or the clone wars, alongside atleast a hyena bomber or b1 fighter droid at least, maybe add glub shitto and his jedi fighter vs hyena bomber to bring him into a set
When lego produces new elements for the CMF line they naturally use the same cheaper plastic as the figs but when these elements are reused in actual sets are they made with the standard plastic or still the cheaper plastic?

>>11735446I grew up with the prequels. I loved them when they came out and I’ve got a lot of fond nostalgia for them (and, significantly, I had a shitload of toys — Lego most notably — from at least the first two movies). But holy shit are those bad movies. I’m astounded at the work zoomers have put into convincing themselves they’re secret, brilliantly constructed masterpieces.
>>11735690Prequels have some worthwhile EU material surrounding them so people can at least partially trick thenselves into thinking they're conceptually good but executed poorly. This is why I think tbe sequel trilogy won't be looked back as fondly, even after they came out most of Star Wars's presence in pop culture is the original trilogy with little stuff trying to build off the sequels.
>>11735690>>11735695At the bare minimum, the prequels at least had neat alien designs, ship designs, worlds, and stuff, and some of the tangential clone stuff was kinda cool. Its really the writing, execution, and some other stuff that sucked. The sequels didn't even have any of those things that at least kinda, sorta worked for the prequels. Like, the prequels were some bad ideas, but with some interesting or cool visuals, but the sequels were just bad ideas, with unremarkable or forgettable visuals. So there is just nothing to lean into or latch onto with the sequels.
You now remember the short lived Lego dinosaurs theme.
>>11735240Is this intended? It looks unfinished
Found this set for $33, is it the best price yet? Should I grab it or it will go down more? Usually when its the maximum a set price goes down? 10-30% off?>>11735701Not that anon but its intended, the pagoda is in ruins when Arlong has it, no wonder Luffy destroyed it so easy.
>>11735701Seems pretty obvious anyway, since the "broken" pieces are lying on the ground underneath the damaged parts.
>>11735708>>11735703I'm not familiar with the theme or whatever franchise it's based on. That's why I asked.
Are the only kids with parents able to afford Lego these days Asian? All the stuff aimed at kids seems to be asian focused like Ninjago, Monkie Kid, and One Piece. Stuff that is more traditionally western seems relegated to 4000 piece one off millennial shelf slop. Or maybe it's just changing tastes with anime becoming more popular for all demographics and age ranges.
>>11735716There's still tons of cheap sets in pretty popular IPs like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Sonic, Marvel, DC, etc.
>>11735703It's a glorifed minifig collection with an exclusive, if you want all the main chsracters in one place or want to invest in it long term then yeah I can't imagine it will lose its value. Ninjago isn't SW big but zoomers love it.
>>11735703It's a neat little build but yeah you'll end up wanting to buy all the sets this year to complete it for sure.
>>11735717That's true. Ninjago's popularity is so confusing for me I'm just grasping at straws. I think it's pretty ugly especially when compared to the old ninja castle theme. Fuck the cultural stagnation in the US is so bad. It's really obvious when you look at the Lego aisle. Like it's as bad as going to the movie theatre. Endlessly recycling the same safe properties and cutting corners just enough to keep the whole thing going for another fiscal quarter.
>>11735724It seems pretty heavily anime inspired. Also throws in a dash of pop-culture monsters as the bad guys (zombies, dragons, robots, etc). I probably would have liked it as like an 8 year old kid or something, but I do find that there are some pretty useful, unique armor, helmet, etc. parts to use for other stuff.
>>11735716I'm not trying to mock you in any way, but why would you even remotely think that the cartoonish representation of Ninjas in toy form is Specifically an interest of Asian people? That's like saying that Chinese people are mostly the individuals who are consuming Chinese food in America. In China, they don't serve spare ribs coated in corn syrup and red dye and Chicken that's covered in sugar and sour spices, right? It's an ahistorical fantastical representation of another culture.
>>11735699cool idea crippled by every set reusing the same handful of overspecialized parts still charming, though
>>11735730Monkie Kid was much less westernized than Ninjago and still had a really long lifespan for a Lego theme.
>>11735738So are you going to answer the question or
>>11734945Neat. Very Art Deco.
>>11735699I never forgot it.
>>11735716Ninjas and martial arts have been huge with a lot of kids, usually there's been waves of that kind of thing since like the 80's. TMNT was a fucking juggernaut in terms of toys and media, and still comes back.

>>11735974>>11735974>whom did you kill with the anakin interceptor that the wings are covered in blood?I see your point, but also, I understand the designing weighing the "need" for a landing gear against the appeal/look of the set.Unlike real life models, on a small lego set like this, it would be really hard to hide the landing gear, so if the set can sit down in a stable way without one, that can be beneficial. The old anakin Interceptor used hinges to angle the fins, so if you put it down without the landing gears the wings often snapped upwards. The the landing gear was needed. The new interceptor wings are angled with technic axles, and you can put them down without the build deforming from its own weight.I actually didn't include landing gear in my interceptor moc either, the ship lands on the rounded pieces on the bottom of the wings.

But 8? You get 4-6 in a low cost battle pack. This set is massive and costs hundreds of dollars. Load it up. Give perceived value with minifigures.>inb4 budget constraintsNot really. Minifigures are very low production cost.
>>11736170>>we need to stop at some pointLego: if you buy enough sets, you'll eventually wind up with a thousand figures. does it matter if each set has a few less?answer:YESit would be a totally different conversation if Lego was regularly making Star Trek sets. no big deal, they can put Tasha Yar and Pulaski in different sets in the next wave. (not the same set, since their show time did not overlap, but that's a digression) but if all Lego plans on making is ONE Star Trek TNG set, AND that set is going to cost $400. c'mon, you can't cheap-out.Lego regularly makes polybags (paper bags now?) with 2 minifigs (TWO!) for $5. clearly it's not a "cost" issuethat Pirate ship for sure should have had 10 more characters included. maybe 12
>>11736170>Serious question: why?Because if you include a sizeable collection of minifigs in one overpriced dust collector you're expected to for everyone. Lego is very particular about how they sell branded IP minifigs, they know people will buy $300+ sets for specific characters and carefully select how and where they include them. Look at that shitty diorama set from 2024, $55 for a small base whose details are stickers is absurd but Thrawn, the blue guy, was a popular character and helped pushed it to be a top seller. It's a devious tactic that they are well aware of but expect more unique characters to be $300+ sets or a "GWP" of said $300 sets.
>>11736205i remember back in the early 2000's lego would put all the popular star wars characters in cheap sets, and for a minute there they sold minifig packs with highly desirable characters in a set of 3 before hasbro told lego they'd sue because apparently selling them like that counted at 'action figure' sales
>>11735538I just saw this again and it reminded me you’re not wrong. Only the cmf is better quality. For example the wolverine from the marvel cmf 2 and the wolverine from the xjet are identical except the cmf has dual molded legs and the xjet version ($80 dolerinos) is printed. So you’re right the CMF is BETTER than license sets.
>>11736215Both printings are shitty and off center though. So I guess that’s a win?
>>11736001man I love the cloth wings on that thing

>>11735974They seem to just stop trying partially or completely with newer models. Obi-Wan's Delta 7 is also a good example of this. Only the very first one has full proper landing gear and all the newer ones just have 1 front leg while letting it sit on its own ass.The newer Interceptors have more detail, but they are way too bulky/big for my tastes + I'll always have nostalgia for the original build because of the lego SW video game.

>>11736477>so many people coping about the cost of "one off molds" when discussing pokemon sets.coping is not the correct thing going on,it's basically an overall rejection of the concept.the thought is that Lego "can't do it"yet they have demonstrated countless times that they can indeed make tiny minifig-scale Pokemon molds for one-off $5 sets
>>11736496Pretty sure he is making all of that shit up, for the most part. There were plenty of times they spread desirable figures out across multiple sets. And the only 3-Packs they ever put out were these clam-shell style lite battle-packs, and they were only from a few years ago. They even came with a little build, so they weren't just minifigures.Very early on, I'm pretty sure that they couldn't sell (and probably still can't) just sell SW minifigures on their own. Its why they never did SW CMF series, and why the only single figures are keychains, because they're "not figures" by technicality. I'd imagine that there markets are a little different, though, because they do have those little single figure foil bags in places like Europe that just has a minifigure and a weapon, but we never get stuff like that in the US.
>>11736498They even pretty much have little "not Eeveelutions" in the current Dreamz sets.
>>11736419I'm so glad i bought the remake. It's the best ship set they ever made.
>>11736496>>11736501Lego did indeed do 3-figure packs for multiple things, Ninjas (pre-Ninjago), Rock Raiders, and even Star Wars (notice the old yellow heads)but Hasbro freaked out big-time with muh-exclusive-figure-rights, forcing Lego to include bricks for le-building-experience-set-not-an-action-figure-technically
>>11736498it's kinda mind blowing how much attention and effort goes into CMFs compared to other products especially the licensed products.
>>11736514CMFs have their own budget, when the budget goes only into the minifigs of course they will look great. Meanwhile themes have a budget that goes into builds, new molds and minifigs. Also, fun fact, for Lego to get their moeny worth from making a new mold they usually put it into a keychain, that's why you see Bambi and Dumbo keychains for example, to get their cash or spread that mold across multiple sets. For example Lord Ras during the first Dragons Riding wave was spread in like 3-4 sets of the wave.
>>11736468I designed bigger feet, but I prefer the small ones for some reason
>>11736511the final duel and jedi attack sets were pretty good for what they wereemperor and vader, luke, an officer, and a stormtrooper in final duel 1 and 2, obi wan and 2 droidekas and quigon and 2 battle droids in jedi attackadd on the two jabba's palace add on sets that came with r2, 3p0, and bib fortuna with the door and boba and 2 gamorean guards with the frozen han set and you get insane value in some very small sets

>>11735876There is another
>>11735820>>11735822>>11735823Why do i keep getting the feeling Lego really doesn't want the JW/JP license but they can't escape whatever contract they signed with Universal. The younger kids sets i can completely understand but for the last few years they've been going put of their way to dick people over on the dinosaurs.>started with the atrioraptor and pyroraptor from the Dominion sets being one single mold, not in scale with the other dinos or minifigures>next they switched the dilo from a buildable dino to a smaller singlemold>then the rebirth raptors were no longer buildable but a smaller single mold as well>Domion Trex missing paint apps thats always been on the other trexes (claws)>give everyone an overpriced brick built mosa instead of a molded build ableNow:>Over priced brickbuilt JP3 Spino instead of a reused and recolored Rebirth Spinosaurus set>derby trex Jr for a Jr playset
>>11735869Mixed bag really>Trex set is only really good for getting the trex, minifigs, liferaft>buildable baby dinosaur isn't bad but has issues with its head being to heavy for the joint supporting it so it always droops down>Jeep set: jeep is solid but still it's just another jeep, best thing is the little bush bit that you can put the new singlemold dinosaurs on to make them jump out of the bushes>titanosaurus set only exists to sell the titanosaurus figureWaiting on the mosa to go on clearance before I buy it but the best is easily the big expensive Spino set>2 good solid dinosaurs>large jungle ruins to build
>>11735869>>11736576Last year, when I was hyped for the movie, I wanted the ruins set so I could put my Indiana Jones minifig inside to explore it and fight dinos. But I still haven't gotten it. LEGO has too many sets now, and I have a finite amount of space and cash for them. I still plan to get the T. rex set because I want it, but its price isn’t going down!

>>11736854I used to think it was tbe white pupils too but I look at some of the early 2000s faces with them and still like them. I think it's actually in the expressions, even sillier expressions don't feel as cartoonishly exaggerated as they should be making faces feel too uniform and nondistinct. I like that old face prints had a character to them, nowadays you get a minor scuff or smile expression at most.>>11736869My nostalgia > other's nostalgia

>>11736887Why did they ever try to make this work?
>>11736887>>11736891>Why did they ever try to make this work?Lego should know at this point that they CANNOT print the color white on top of a black part, yet they keep trying, like it doesn't matter.Dedra's pants could have easily been the dual-molded type.
What's the most you ever splurged on a minifig? I think it was $15 for me but I've been really wanting this mantis guy from toy story for an alien in my space display. The head is only a few dollars but each antenna goes for $20 so the cheapest I ever see him is like $75-80. Sometimes I'm tempted to just do it but can never bring myself to justify it.
>>11736622I like them and I like their praise of Belville, though they can be a bit cringe at times with regards to stuff like Harry Potter.

>>11736956They do it in the annoying scorned lover leftists way that don't hate it for being overpriced or because the books are just well written kids books and not something an adult should obsess over but because they're upset at Rowling for having political takes they disagree with and so their hate flows downward from it. Case and point they don't censor or rename Star Wars despite falling in the exact same category. So my annoyance is they hate it from the wrong reasons/give it extra hate that really isn't needed, it's just virtue signaling to the transgenders. Though at the same time I'm not some retard who requires someone be 100% my politics all the time and can't enjoy it unless I do unlike them and I will continue to watch them because like I said aside from the minor cringe moments they're very solid and entertaining.

>>11737009>Why does HP deserve to be shit on?you're kidding, right?the short version is that the HP author JKWhatever said something like "there's only two genders and you don't get to pick, you're one or the other" and rather than apologize, she doubled-down'd her opinion. and "the agenda people" raged-out and tried to cancel her, and by association, all of HPthe Lego fans hate HP because they think Lego won't make Classic Castle sets since they bump visually on the store shelf and split the dollars

>>11737235$60 (this set with Luffy hat/hair) + $55 (Luffy with regular arms in the Buggy Clown set) = $115Lego still price-locks THE FREAKING MAIN CHARACTER at over $100I can't wait to see the rest of the 2nd season sets, to again confirm Lego greed with OP minifigs. in case a Lego employee is reading this I loved the OP Netflix show, but have not yet bought any Lego sets due to high prices and dismal figure distribution among the offerings. if Luffy had been WEARING the hat in the Buggy set, I would have got it. if Mihawk was in any other (not $300+ set) I would have got it.
>>11737245Atleast the set includes kid Luffy tooAlso, the price is $70 not $60, I had to look at lego.com pre-order again to see the price.>MihawkPerhaps we will get him in a cheaper set down the line depending if the theme continues beyond 2027 when season 3 releases. They should finish the Alabasta season this June. I'm curious if we get Alvida in sets this summer or Garp, Koby, Helmepo. Smoker too!
>>11737245>>11737249What are the chances we get Sir Crocodile in the sets this year? Also, will Lego ever touch the anime version? Maybe if the DBZ set proves succesful they will do a anime version set down the line for the 18+ crowd?
>>11737250>will Lego ever touch the anime version?I really feel bad for the anime fans. it's similar to Lego making Star Trek sets based off of the JJAbrahms Kirk movies instead of the original show. (but unlike the JJA Trek, the Netflix OP version is actually great, so it's not really the same thing)
which year was the best year of exo-force and why was it year 2?
>>11737257But Lego made a set based on The Next Generation not Abrams, I also expect a TOS Enterprise set this year or in 2027 for the anniversary

>>11737237Bleach doesn't really have a whole lot of really iconic places or vehicles or anything, but with all the helmets and busts they do, I could see them doing some of Ichigo's hollow masks. Also maybe a Soul Society diorama, and maybe Hogyoku/execution site, or some huge Hollow or something.
>>11737097>>11737168>>11737172I swear there is something paranormal going on with this guy, he looks identical to Pu Yi (the last emperor of china), it's all I can think about when I see him. Or they are just related and that's how he obtained his vast fortune.
>>11737304That’s a fairly strong resemblance. Back before he was on Lego masters or blew up I chatted with duckbricks on a like 10 person twitch stream. He seemed like a decent guy at the time and even laughed at my brittle brown joke but there’s just something off about this dude. Uncanny valley shit.
>>11736608Thx. Yeah I want to design a modular Lego horse that can combine with my humanoid MOCs to become a mecha centaur. I really need to refresh my parts collection though, I haven’t placed a Bricklink order in 4+ years and I’m running low on critical pieces.

>>11737265>But Lego made a set based on The Next Generation not Abrams, yeah, but I was attempting to make an analogy (which is a Star Trek thing lol) as a fan of Star Trek, I would be outraged if the only Trek thing they did was a modern re-make, and people would be telling me "it's close enough" and I'd be like NO! it's not!I know Lego banks on nostalgia, so if they did do a Kirk, it would certainly be the Shatner version. but that must be the thing really happening to the One Piece anime fans.>>11737282>but normies will be put off by cartoons.anime is super bizarre. a lot of it is clearly for grown-ups and not children, but it can never break that perception. as soon as they make a live-action version, normies can "see" it. video games are the same way, kind of.it would be funny if Lego made a black&white Luffy and said it was for the One Piece Manga. just skip past the anime versions right to the Manga lol

(for the record... that's a guess. I don't really know if that's how they pick themes)
>>11737547I also think that's gay, however we can easily reuse the torsos and head molds on yellow kino. The pencil skirt not so much but I'll figure something out.
>>11737547>>set representing real life but not an IP>>fleshies>>11737526Lego just released the soccer trophy with a yellow head figure, I saw that in the store and thought "shouldn't that be a fleshie?" since the trophy is a real thing, right?why not include the spread of head color options? the set already includes a boy or girl head for the figure.

>>11738533I want a properly fleshed out modern medieval theme so badly but castlefags are cursed with nothing but $200+ AFOLslop once a year
>>11737640When the first movie came out, they had to recall a ton of the merch because the website address on the packaging directed you to a porn company site, rather than the one for the movie.>>11737647I mean.. they did a Dune Thopter kit... that's not exactly the most kid friendly franchise.>>11738790>>11738533I made a small, 6 MILS plate lay-out. REALLY wanted a decent tunnel for the train to run through... So I'm working on a big ole hill for one end of the table - ordered a big bag of grey bricks from Lego pick-a-brick (and a load of old windows off of ebay) and built a copy of the 1970's '001' Weetabix Promo castle to sit up there... just... without all the colourful bits. Does need a bit of work... and I need to find something to use as a 2x3 door... but it should look pretty cool in the background.I'd post a photo, but I left my camera plugged into the computer last night and drained the battery, so you're saved from that.
