Man this is fucking awesome. I wish I had the creativity and talent to make MOCs like this. I also really just don't have the space at the moment but I hope to have my own home in the next few years so I can finally make a Lego space. Rebuilding my collection of parts is my primary goal now since I lost my entire childhood collection and have only just now started buying sets again in the past few years. The problem is I only buy stuff that I really like so I don't really have anything to disassemble for spare parts for MOC making but slowly over time I hope to rebuild it.

On an unrelated note, I sincerely fucking hate that Atlantis helmet/backpack so fucking much. The Buzz Lightyear torso design, ridiculously oversized air tanks, and big obnoxious pin holes were bad enough, but the real shit cherry on that particular shit sundae is the fact that it then universally took over as the new big space helmet/backpack. Replacing a helmet that's better in every single way whose only actual crime was getting on in years a bit.
It also gave us the dome visors with the trapezoid embossing, which literally do not even fit on a basic motorcycle helmet properly.

I honestly have a hard time thinking of it as a horse helmet because every set I ever had it from used it in a purely decorative manner (or, in one case, as a battering ram). Then in the 2000s they replaced it with a simpler design, probably because they realized it doesn't really work for ay faction that doesn't already have a dragon motif.

>>
>>11879223
Good find. I missed out on a bunch of old ship parts including sails because FB blocked me from commenting on posts.
>>
>>11879227
...Why exactly wouldn't it be legal? It's a clip and a bar, a clip and a bar has always been a legal connection. Illegal would be if pieces are being held in place by tension in a way they were never designed for or if a piece is being bent (even slightly) to make the connection, and even then Lego have themselves done that kind of thing before (plate between two studs for the former, CADshit that nobody on the design team ever physically built between it being mocked up and going into production for the latter).
>>
>>11879249
>CADshit that nobody on the design team ever physically built between it being mocked up and going into production for the latter
It's still unbelievable to me that this actually happened. I would think there would be an entire focus group dedicated to analyzing the build experience and highlighting problem areas that need to be reworked or pointed out as tricky in the instructions, but I guess there just isn't time for this when you slop out as many sets in a year as Lego has been recently.

I honestly don't know how they even manage that, it's not like they've used actual photoes of the physical product for box art since, what, the early 2000s? So did they tell some jeet to model a minifig and he made it too true to life not understanding that the giant cracks aren't something you want to advertise? Or is nu-lego so fail that the fragility spiritually leaks into even mere renders of the product?

iirc they don't bother with renders for some small sets, which is why >>11879292

I saw some pre-photoshop setups from around 2015 where all the different parts of the set were positioned on white radar dish pieces for stability on a white backdrop, and the radar dish pieces were photoshopped out in the final version.

Dunno if anyone else has seen those Golden Age of Lego Space MOCs appearing on AliExpress lately but I was curious enough to try this Ice Planet 2002-inspired craft. I say inspired cuz while it looks very much like one, there's key differences.

First off they've gone with trans-orange instead of trans-neon orange for the relevant parts, which I suppose could be a lesser of two evils as they could've just as easily gone with the nu-trans-neon orange N*xo garbage. There's no Ice Planet 2002 markings, despite being clearly indicated on several pieces in the instructions (pdf-only by email); also shown there but absent were a printed control panel slope and 1x2 control panel tile. Either they were too cheap to even provide stickers or it wasn't worth the risk of incurring Lego's wrath by reproducing the copyrighted elements of the theme.

There were no minifigs provided either, likely for similar reasons as the above. In terms of quality it was mostly reasonable, though there was one especially egregious lapse in QC which I'll get to. The canopy piece has that almost oily look to it I've come to expect from many Chinese legos; for some reason the right-angled small wing pieces have hollowed out studs which makes for an odd visual contrast. The two big skis were visibly poorly made compared to the rest but function well enough in their role.

>>11880128
The biggest QC failing was in two of the three 1x4 hinge plates; they're slight off so they barely function in holding to the 4x4 hinged plates serving as part of the ship's cargo bay ramp. Can swap them out with Lego-made parts but the fact that one of the three had no issues indicates they can in fact get it right.

>>11880129
The cargo bay houses this cute little scout vehicle. The skis were another area of QC concern as the design calls for two to be stored on a 1x2 plate with vertical bar at the back - had to work a rod through them to loosen them up a bit before I could get them in place. QC issues aside it's a fun little ship, very much captures the feel of that classic Space theme and I'm tempted to rebuild it with Lego, probably with a few modifications. I expect other AliExpress MOC sets to provide a similar experience; not sure if I'll let myself be drawn into another but if the price is right...

That big room on the first level of the "keep" will be a meeting room for the baddies. Black table with 8 chairs and a yellow spider pattern (one leg between each seat space). First floor is entry hall and armoury, second floor is bunks, security office, and the prison cell. Next floor after what we have here will have a platform for the main gun and the tower proper in the back.

Speaking of Ice Planet, I've been working on a kind of modernized ship myself. I don't really go in with a plan, I just sort of rifle through the parts bin and add and subtract as I go. I still need to rework the backend, but the plan was to sort of encase the engines, and also have some pipes and wires, and innards visible like it is a bit of an older ship with some paneling missing. Want to add more blue and filling out the wings and put some more of the neon orange pieces in in a few places.

Thanks! Unfortunately, it doesn't really have much interior space. Like I said, I don't really go in with a plan, so the front half I was more focused on just making it solid, so there is no room for any minifigures. I guess I could have tweaked the cockpit so two figures could have sat in there, but alas.

The back half is pretty open, so I could strip out some of those exposed pipes and wires and stuff and actually make room to put some figures in there. I might end up doing that, actually, and move some of the exposed bits further back toward the engine. I also kind of want to bulk up the wings a little too, but I'm not even close to being done and still tinkering with it.

I wasn't super into City Space stuff, but in hindsight, I kind of like the look of it more so I wished I had picked more up. Funny thing is, I actually did pick up a couple of those little interstellar spaceships myself. Really cool little sets, and yeah, it would be pretty easy to mode them to older Space factions too (your Futuron one looks pretty sweet!)

I picked up a small bulk lot a while back that had a bunch of neon orange and neon green parts, so I sort of want to turn one of those little interstellar ships into a Blacktron II vehicle.

Snazzy, and great choice of theme, though heavier on slopeslop than I find attractive, personally. I'd suggest a little more black and maybe the slopes below the arrows to be changed to something else that would explain the "arch" the wings make around them (vents maybe). I assume you've already got plans for antennae so I won't render any commentary about their lack. The spoiler is cute, maybe you could get a big sticker of the Ice Planet logo to put on there.

If the ink didn't run when you put it in the water, the sealant was effective. If the sealant isn't effective, another layer can work.
I suggest cutting the decals to the minimum size (eg lower down from the forehead, cut off the bottom corners around the cheeks) and they will fit better on the rounded heads.

Lego making the first Pokemon minifigs and minifig-scale molded Pokemon cost over $200 is crazy evil

(Rayquaza doesn't count, it's not molded and the Minifig in that set is basically a poor MOC using close-enough hair that doesn't look like the character at all)

we have only ourselves to blame. if people refuse to buy it, Lego would stop doing it. but over and over again, society proves it's... okay... to "let" Lego abuse us.

I just wanna get that old Aztec temple with the big baseplate but it's like $400. I did get some of those pillars in that bag + basically all the main figs. I just don't like how suddenly the value skyrocketed for these. It also doesn't make sense that there's probably millions of each figureout there so it's not like they're rare. I really miss how you could just drop $15 to a random Lego eBay seller and he'd send you a random bag of printed pieces for mocs and decorating.

I wonder if investorfags are a big factor in this. The smarter ones have no doubt clued in to the fact that scalping the new $X00 dust collectors is not a winning strategy, so they do a little more work and buy up stocks of the old things which are popular and guaranteed to not ever be made again (retired colors/molds/themes) and thus remain both scarce and desirable.
Purist armybuilders are also a possibility, like autists trying to make WW1/WW2 soldiers so buying up 100 Baron von Barrons/Johnny Thunders for the torsos and hats.
>>
>>11883441
You should buy cheap Lego pieces (torsos/walls/etc) and print off stickers/waterslide decals.
Personally I can't refuse buying horses/cows for $1 each when the Lego ones are $10+ and barely higher quality

>>11883536
Yeah, I don't think whatever I was trying to do with those trans-yellow rotor blade bits really worked out.
>>
>>11883532
I like the fusion of Fright Knights and Blacktron, but I think the tower could benefit from more of the classic space design elements. Hallmarks of classic Lego space are large windows, spindley skeletal supports, and a profusion of antennas, dishes, and sci-fi instruments. Blacktron has all these and adds the color scheme of Black, yellow, and trans red/yellow (nailed this), the triforce emblem (nailed this), and the occasional a-symmetry (not present). If this were mine, I would add exposed supports to the middle section of the tower, leaving a larger cabin at the top. This blends well with the Fright Knight aesthetic as well, which has prominent arches and open spaces. Taking inspiration from the telescopes present in Willa's sets, I would also add plenty of radar dishes and antennas to her tower as well.
Of course that's just my 2 cents, it's your build and you can do whatever you want.

I just now see this one too, with a tree/acorn design I've never seen prior. The leaks stated one would be a 'squirrel knight' kid cosplaying like the one prior with the horse on a stick.
>>
>>11883596
>>11883599
I think it's most likely they just pinched these designs from some guy on Eurobricks or something (maybe he adapted the snake one to the old shield piece which is what they were looking for, then they just copied the others too). It's not like the Chinks have inside knowledge of Lego's development that no one else has. I expect the squirrel knight will have an actual squirrel on the shield, otherwise it would be called the tree knight or something.
>>
>>11883599
no way would official Lego do a whackadoo acorn tree like that. it's visually complicated and just a mess. I expect the shield to either have a single giant acorn or like a silhouette of a squirrel matching the style of the previous silhouettes except ha-ha it's a squirrel

and that other claw one is a chicken foot. looks familiar, like it's from something, but I can't think of anything in particular and I don't care enough to do the research myself
>>
>>11883607

I can't answer for anyone else, apparently the sets Lego offers sell, so they'll keep making them like they do. does that count as consensus?

I, personally, think they are lame. giant sets cheat the functionality and appearance. while they DO look "a'aight" it's only because they are huge (and thus... expensive)

they would be a zillion times cooler if they were Speed Champions minifig-scaled cars

I don't think they're doing that well at all. Optimus came out in 2021 or 2022, and since then, only him, Bumblebee, and Soundwave have come out...Unless you also want to count Brickheads, because they also did one of Megatron. I imagine they made them so big so they could still transform easily. Fuckin Hasbro made the Kreos and they couldn't even transform, you just had to disassemble them back and forth between bot mode and vehicle mode. And some of those sets were actually pretty big.

If they mad them the size of Speed Champions, there's no way they would transform either. On top of that, considering Speed Champions are already 300-350 pieces each, they'd probably then end up being 500 piece sets of nothing but pins, clips, 1x1 round pieces with holes in them, and you'd still have to probably disassemble them to turn them from robot to vehicle.

I have Optimus and Bumblebee, but I have yet to build them. Only reason I got them was because I found Bumblebee at Walmart for about $40 on clearance, and Optimus at Target for about 50% off on clearance. Both of them technically retired at the end of July, but you an still get them almost anywhere because of zombie stock but you're going to be paying full retail and from the sound of it, they aren't worth it.

Lego made that D&D Castle only have 5 Minifigs for your $360, and then has the crazy notion of selling the Minifigs extra for $5 a pop. for three hundred sixty dollars, that castle should have had over 20 characters, especially considering the source material. it could have been random bits create-YOUR-character stuff like that foosball table set had! and THEN it could have also had a CMF set

I'm not sure whether to thank Lego for that idea, or be mad at them. I mean, I couldn't buy a whole castle, but I DID get a bunch of the $5 figs. and it somehow seems nice to torture the people who support $X00 sets by screwing them on figures, even if my instincts tell me that's mean

it's terrible that Lego designed their Pokemon sets to include printed eyes and mouths. now, you are locked into the painful game of waiting until Lego chooses your favorite one. you simply cannot MOC your own, and have it match what Lego did.

it's the exact opposite of what it should have been. instead of inspiring creativity, it squashed it. and on top of that, the Smart Bricks are locked out of matching anything, ever, unless Lego makes it so.
