Maybe that point started there, or maybe he's finally coming into terms he fell for her in the first movie but didn't know how to actually respond. One thing I know for sure is that he is not prepared to do anything romantically, despite his flirtatious nature - a playboy with a heart that grew three sizes too big to handle.
