Then about every three years they would change their island location which would come with incredibly detailed maps for locations where stories would be set. Funnily enough, I'd say only 3/4ths of the locations on these maps would actually be used in the stories. Maybe cause they wanted to fire the imagination of kids like me for stories they could make up in their minds as they played with the toys. Anyway the meta-plot was that you had an evil shadow god (ultimately revealed to be more the boss of a bunch of other bad OP shadow guys) that wanted to keep the giant robot-god that the setting was on/in asleep while the good guys wanted to wake him up. With the last twist was actually everything was according to keikaku and he at the last second would possess the robot and become God. And then the good guys of another planet would build their own robot to beat the evil out of him because the writers were trying to do a soft-reboot because the Lore had been going on for 10 years. Which is the main reason it ended. Like I started collecting them when I was 7, and I was 17 when the line ended. Sure I was still collecting them, but I wasn't Lego's target audience, and for new kids trying to jump halfway in- well like I said the story is DENSE. (cont.)

You'd put them in your PC (oh- for the zoomers, PC's used to have Disk Drives, think of them like archaic USB ports) and you would watch these awesome 3D renders and explore parts of the setting and get glimpses of the lore. You had an awesome flash game, some other flash animations, and a sequel to the flash game on the Lego website, you had comics that were part of a subscription to Lego Magazine (which I had), you had a series of books (which I all owned) and you had four movies. You want to understand the lore? You have to hunt down ALL of that. Thankfully all the visual media is easily found on youtube (I'd be shocked to discover if the Lego Website still hosted any of it), but the Books and comics are hard to track down. So naturally if you're like 8, and you see a Bionicle toy in Walmart and think 'oh that looks cool I wonder what the story is' you can see why Lego would think that they'd let the thing get out of control. That said, they've done pretty much nothing with the brand outside of an abortive reboot attempt. Part of it being the Lego higher ups think that Bionicle doesn't mesh with their 'family friendly' image, despite the fact Bionicle literally saved the company in the 00's. Their other big brand was trying to mix lego's with electronics which created a vibrant hobby scene to this day, did NOT make a lot of money.
