He admits to outright being disappointed every time he screwed up and didn't get bullied or mocked in response, because the fire Cadgan once had just wasn't there anymore in his eyes. Hector is a deeply, deeply broken man behind the face he presents to the wider world. I think the best equivalent I could give is that he's...basically Alex from Soulcreek but without the murderous/genocidal tendencies. He's someone who got a glimpse of what having freedom, breaking rules is like, and was then forced right back into being a spineless doctor because that's what his father wanted to make of him. His mental state purely associates Cadgan's bullying with the liberation he craves.
