A common explanation as for why Kris is doing everything is that he played some kind of part in Dess' disappearance, and he feels guilty about it(whether he should actually feel guilty about it or not is another matter), and as such is trying his hardest to fix the whole thing, as he believes he is at fault, it would be a good explanation as to why he goes to such lengths to do so.But I really want to know how the whole event happened, did Dess know she was doing something dangerous and brought Kris along anyway? Was it just some otherwise innocent occult thing that took a very, very wrong turn? Was Dess even the initiator of the whole thing? I mean Dess is the older one and has more authority, but still, I don't think it's completely impossible that Kris was the one who came up with the idea in the first place, that being said if that was the case I think it's more likely that it would probably be something that was at first harmless but then went very wrong, I find it hard to think that Kris would take Dess along to do something that could be extremely dangerous to her.

The dessappearance resulted in everything good in his life going away. His older sister figure, the stability of his family, his oldest and closest friendship, and all the good memories that once came with them. Kris is planning to sacrifice himself to atone for something that may or may not even be his fault, regardless of whether or not it will bring back those good ol days or not. He feels a need to make restitution.

It's just a big part of their character.On a related note, one thing I don't see too, too often with Krusie or Kriselle is how Kris might feel affirmed by dating a monster. We often depict Susie as being emotional when she realizes that someone wants to be with her, but the same could be said for Kris, too. Kris's humanity has always made them feel like an outsider, but being in a relationship with a monster might help them feel like any other bloke in Hometown.
