So basically in his setting WW2 ended with the nazis discovering magic and nuking half of europe, causing magical radiation to just sort of spread across the world, simply called Miasma. It's mainly harmless unless you try to use it to cast magic, which involves extracting a small piece of your soul to shape into something useable. Typically glyphs that cause the miasma to do different things. Doing this too much, or too recklessly, makes your soul get tainted and causes your body to mutate.There's a faction of mages who cause this on purpose, the Cult of Flesh. They're all strong mages but have willingly given up their humanity and think others should do the same because magic is great and beasthood is basically hedonism with superpowers.Deu, at a young age, saw this transformation firsthand. A woman suddenly started taking in huge amounts of miasma, collapsed in an alley, and rapidly transformed into a panther-like creature. It wasn't pretty, and even from his hiding spot he could hear the body reshaping itself. But then she started laughing, reveling in her new form and doing all sorts of unsavory things with the mage that had been guiding the change. The image stuck with him, and he realized that all of these people were insane. If that was what would happen, he needed to find a way to stop it from happening to anyone else.So Deu hit the books, studying magic and its the effects of Miasma in an attempt to both understand it and prevent that sort of change. But as he studied, the Cult of Flesh grew in influence and what was initially a hidden sect became a very widespread tolerated faction. Beastfolk, and all the implications of what they did to become that, were everywhere. >>77698803Well it wouldn't be the buffness that puts him off, but the beastly nature of them that'd squick him. Like mentioned before, in his setting the beastfolk that exist are a result of people who are contaminated on a soul-deep level. Often times intentionally and with the desire to have others take the plunge as well. His character arc is basically learning to accept aspects of himself that he finds unsavory or outright disgusting. In this case, his growing attraction to the lycanthrope headmistress that has, on multiple occasions, kicked his ass once he's gone schizo-mode in "legally-distinct furry hogwarts" due to being surrounded by cult members. But, until he inevitably reaches the point shown in that picture and gets to feel Miasma Contamination firsthand, he's struggling. A lot. His headmistress is hot, the nurse who patches him up treats him like a little brother, and his roommate is one of the few people who is outright immune to his magic (the other is selene, the werewolf, due to elemental fuckery that causes werewolves to be able to tank deu's preferred school of casting).So, basically, Deu quickly realizes his type is "tall, buff, and beastly" but spends half a school year gaslighting himself into thinking that's not the case.
