FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

also as a bonus exercise for you all
tell me how/why I fucked up so that the cloud looks too close/small/not grandiose. I've added my thoughts but don't read them if you want to actually try

I can think of two primary reasons.

0. it's unfinished obviously
1. The biggest reason is I really wanted to show at least a bit of the top of the cloud so that you could see the overshooting top of the supercell. But, realistically (and if I were to draw the planes of the cloud with respect to the vanishing point) you wouldn't be able to see ANY part of the top of the cloud, if the cloud were truly as grand as I wanted it to be.
I could still fix it in this thumbnail. Remove the top of the cloud, and drastically extend the "mushroom gills" part of the anvil cloud.
2. I haven't really accounted for any atmospheric perspective yet. If I were to add atmospheric perspective to the cloud, it would likely mask the problem enough that most people wouldn't ever notice problem #1. Not that they would anyway, #1 is one of those "the layman doesn't know what's wrong, but they can tell something is wrong" problems

I don't know if I've ever played a game that seems to hellbent on not letting me enjoy it. Every time you get something fun, there are two things detracting from it. There are also a lot of just really hostile design elements in the game, like the damage you mentioned, a lack of meaningful pickups, and a really flat power curve with some weird spikes (I had base HP and silk until about fifteen hours in, then I started finding a bunch).

It's just a bit weird.

I wouldn't beat myself up about it, the perspective seems harder on the left, also not sure if you had reference to go on? (which makes it even harder without) Emotional state while drawing matters a _lot_ as well. (which I have no clue about, but if i feel sad and depressed I _know_ I'm not going to draw well, and then it seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy that i'll draw crappy, but it should be celebrated that you managed to make yourself draw at all)

It seems like there were perspective struggles during this one. I would try iterate on the shapes / robobean thing, and then you can use liquify to smush stuff around later to match those shapes (so you don't have to redraw stuff as much), that would probably help loads.

Things i'm not sure about is that it seems like one of her legs is supposed to come out towards the camera (since it's much larger?), but it doesn't read super well. boobs/torso/midriff indicate a lower angle shot, but the vagina is more "head on" and also 3/4 without the hips indicating this tilt, the hips/torso feels straight and head on (mostly).

I'm not sure if both her legs are supposed to have the skin folds to the groin, since one of them is probably what she's resting her weight on and is presumably more straight? I think a ref here would clear that up.

I'm not sure about the position of neck/head when the top of the boobs cover the shoulders, I think it would imply craning her neck a bit much forward & out in front of her chest. If i look down with my head then my jaw almost touches my chest (collarbones meeting area ?)

I appreciate the feedback. I just think this one was out of my league a bit. That's what happens when someone with no perspective skill tries perspective. I can maybe try to fix some of the stuff you mentioned but I don't think I'll be able to do much.

Oh, with this ref your struggles make so much sense! I'm not sure what I would do in this situation. I recently learned that Clip Studo Paint has a built-in mannequin posing tool, so I guess i would try to use that in combination with the ref, to line up the mannequin (and the camera FOV) and pose it to fill in the blanks of the reference so i could have a full body reference (somewhat), since you intend to draw more details outside of the ref image.

Btw, I think this is deceptively hard to do, since in the original the cameras position in space means it would not be able to see her legs, and if it did, it would imply some really intense fisheye warping FOV. if you dollied the camera further back out and "zoomed" back in, you will get closer to orthographic and the ref would no longer "look" the same (it would look more ortho / like what happens in a hitchcock zoom).

TL;DR, while the part of her that is within the frame might not look super warped by perspective, the stuff outside would have to be _REALLY_ warped in order to "look right", which probably means you were doomed from the start.

Here's a drawing that I worked on for practice, as I was learning how to render with complex detail and fewer lines. I think I did a good job, but I was wondering if there are a couple of areas that I could improve for next time?

Did I render the lighting and the ambient occlusion correctly, and are the eyes fine?

A griffin of non-standard species combination, eh? Always fun to see people play with mythical creature concepts in new ways.

Shading's very good, though obviously a little amateurish-looking. Don't really know how you'd make it more professional-looking, since I'm not much of an expert on the subject myself. The only obvious fault I can find is that the cat parts have relatively light shadow, so try darkening it and seeing if that looks better to you. The highlights on the cat parts could also use a bit of brightening for greater contrast.

Also, looks like you're using pure black for the shadow. While I think it looks alright here, it might be worth trying a very dark, deep blue in Multiply blending mode instead. It's a tried and true trick to making shadows that look good in almost any scenario (outside of unusual lighting conditions, in which case you can usually get away with tweaking the color of the shading to be the color wheel opposite of the color of the light) with relatively little effort.

>>
>>77716400
Unusual poses tend to give you some anatomical leeway, since you don't usually see people in such poses so most people won't spot errors quite as readily. Standing poses are something we see every day, so you have less room for error before it starts looking off.
Outside of that, could just be you have more experience with anatomy in unusual poses than standing poses.

Firstly, not sure how you don't have more followers on your socials. Really strong grasp of anatomy here. Very pretty lady.
I agree with the other anon on shadow colors. I saw something the other day talking about painting light, rather than a 'lack' of it, so maybe consider that when you're doing rendering. I also notice a lack of bounce or ambient light, which can really add to the dimensionality of a figure, and make it pop more (as well as solving the issue of dark shadows on dark colors, like the black fur here, for instance.)
The only other thing that's popping out to me is that her deltoid doesn't seem to be wrapping around her shoulder properly. The muscle from her breast should be curving up over her shoulder, rather than into her armpit as it is now. I guess, in other words, we're seeing too much of her pectoral given the position of her arm.

All that said though, I really quite like it. I think bounce light and some select highlights could elevate it to the next level, but it's beautiful the way it is now.

It's kind of crazy to think how much my standards for what's good and bad art has changed a lot since I started drawing. A lot of what I used to think was decent or even good looks bad to me now.
I just noticed that an artist I followed that probably has over a decade of experience over me, hasn't really improved much in that time. And their stuff wasn't really that good to begin with.
Anyone else have similar experiences?
>>
How do you combine paining and line work in your process? Usually I see artists go sketch > lines > color > render.
But I think its way easier to see the volumes by painting after the sketch, then define with linework/editing as needed afterward.

Both styles have their merits, though admittedly, the sketch > lines > color > render process is more of a legacy trad methodology since paint's relatively expensive so you wanted to make real damn sure you had something worth putting all that pigment on the canvas for. Also, since traditional painting is also rather time-consuming, it helps to have some good linework to remind you what needs to go where if you've been spending days working on one portion of it and don't quite remember the finer details you had in mind for the rest, which would be a problem if all you've got to go on is a messy, cursory sketch.

With digital lines (including vector lines, which are handy when you want real smooth and polished results, non-destructive editing and infinite scalability, at the cost of being much more fiddly than hand-drawn lines), you get something that works even without color and if you've enclosed all the lines, you'll have an easy time filling them with the flat colors using selection tools.

Since digital paint's free and much more forgiving of mistakes than trad, essentially sketching with rough blocking out of colors and then refining is also very viable. Never really tried it myself, but I can see how it would be highly beneficial for getting a fully rendered piece out quite quickly, with enough practice and streamlining of the process. Another trick I've seen is to render strictly in grayscale and then add color with layers in various blending modes, like hue, overlay and multiply. Handy if you want to experiment and rapidly iterate on color schemes.

So, if you're planning on doing primarily digital painting rather than drawing, you'll probably get more out of the lineless method. Still, learning a bit of draftsmanship and occasionally practicing it never hurts, especially if you ever find yourself with nothing but pen and paper on hand when inspiration strikes.

Thank you very much, I added the dark blues and it looks a lot better! Funny enough, I only used dark purples when shading, but I see where the issue lies.

I appreciate that! I adjusted her left deltoid muscle, and I also added the highlights and some bounce light.

I did fewer lines, but I want to keep some of them.

I agree, I'm pretty happy that 200 strangers enjoy my art! I personally think followship doesn't equate to skill; rather, it depends on whether your art pieces are aesthetically appealing. However, I do want to get better at my craft and produce better, visually appealing works.

What I want to learn is how to block in shapes with only a round brush. There is a video I watched that really inspired me to try rendering my drawings differently. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dAc5pBipPVQ

Static YCHs only sell if done by popular artists. If you want to get people interested while being a literal who, you have to make something animated.

Yeah, that's a tough one, iirc it's a pretty substantially sized one so it would end up affecting the pose a lot. You can try lifting her hips up, or take the lazy way and just have it stick down or from the side.

How big do you think I can get away with making a character's tits for a SFW story before people start asking questions
>>
>>77735488
Depends on your audience. There's people out there these days who'll think anything above B-cups is inherently sexualizing the character and will complain about it loudly. I'd say most reasonable people don't really care even if you start going through the whole alphabet in cup sizes, so long as you keep them covered and have some justification for such mammoth mammaries, even if said justification is as flimsy as being fodder for cheap comedy. I'd say if you stick to DD's and below, you really don't even need to justify anything to your average guy.

how do i make my art look more sexually appealing? rn all i do is sketching, but what i understood is that to make it better, i should do softer colors

Hey I post my work all the time!

>>77730733
I'VE BEEN FOILED AGAIN. Devious anon prankster man! No but seriously guys, I really don't ever want to belabor the point for no reason. I literally came into these threads because I've been bullshitting perspective for my whole art career and finally been faced with the fact that I need to learn it to improve. It's one of those things you can't avoid. Get it done early so you aren't bitching about it later.

>>77735488
People will probably ask questions if you are generally far more SFW than you are cheesecake, but if you start off cheesecake nobody will give a fuck. If anything this is more of a Algo problem and being shadowbanned for making things TOO nsfw.

>>77737880
It might be a style issue. You art work is fine, but sex appeal often comes from the over exaggeration of sexual assets (Within a simplification space) or the detail placed on sexual assets (In a semi real/realistic sense)

Again I state that your art looks fine and has general appeal, but 3/4 angled images of a relatively learn character streaking a pose isn't going to really burst with sexual interest. You gotta find more enticing angles. Look at some of the porn pictures taken on a website like Pornpics and see how they focus their camera. Inspect images until you find something that's sexually appealing to you and them operate off of that.

thats... thats a good suggestion anon, thank you very much
>>
>>77737880
Exaggerating certain aspects of the character and pose helps build sex appeal. For your drawing I think adding more of a curve to her back would help highlight her chest and figure. Making her right leg bend back further could also show off how slender her legs are. Try to make one part of the body the central focus, like the ass or boobs. Draw the viewers eyes to that area and emphasise it the most. Also look study how clothing can highlight certain areas of the body by hiding others, clothes are very underappreciated way of making something look sexy.

I have so many wips and idk which one I should work on, or if I should change them/redo them.
