When you were talking with Footers about Pathologic 1's twist and the developers subsequent trolling of the haters as well as pointing out why their criticism was flawed, I looked it up myself and saw the most salient point! All Just a Dream/Story is a trope hated on principle due to its biggest flaw, that being it invalidates a story by making its events made up! The biggest example of this (at least here in the west) was St. Elsewhere, a medical drama that reveals at the very end that the whole hospital and the events within were just the musings of an autistic child staring at a snowglobe! Originally, people loved it, claiming it was "deep" and "provoking", until basic logic caught up and realised how stupid it is! Like, why is this autistic kid dreaming up several seasons of a show out of a single snowglobe? Why are we privy to these musings up until the very last second? How does this twist improve the story in any way other than a cheap shock? It's this complete lack of thought that perfectly encapsulates why the trope by itself is so stupid! BUT, the writing of Pathologic makes it work, and extremely well at that! His outfit may be near exactly the same in concept, but the little details keep it in line with the rest of the series' fashion, unlike Donte! His punk demeanour is used as a unique spin on the series aesthetics rather than a replacement, unlike Donte! And most damning of all, his angst and expletives are not for edginess, they're for perfectly rounding out not only his character, but the ENTIRE SERIES PLOT, for reasons that if I explained them would spoil the entire series, as they respect continuity THAT much, UNLIKE EL DONTE! They took everything spiteful from DmC: DMC, and returned it a millionfold by making those elements shine with the love & care they could never replace! In short, DMC5 Nero is a testament not just to DMC's amazing writing, but DMC5's return to form and the developers genuine passion for their creation and its fans!
