His greatest ace in the hole is that he doesn't really use modern LGBTQETC.-coded language, so no one can really fault him for pulling that twist aside from the more extreme folk who'd label him as an enby-baiter or something.It's also ignoring possible plot-related shenanigans that better sell the idea to the fandom, too. It wouldn't be the first time a prophecy got someone's gender wrong (usually when a heroine fulfills the prophecy over one that uses male pronouns), or maybe the prophecy just means Kris's sex and not what pronouns they go by.I'm not holding my breath on it, it'd be a crazy twist, but if Toby wanted to make it happen I trust that he could pull it off somehow.
