FAQ
Q: I'm a total beginner. Where should I start?
A: Do the exercises in either "Keys to Drawing" by Bert Dodson or "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Additionally, you can try the first few lessons of https://drawabox.com/ for building up muscle memory.

wanted to do the lines inktober.
Honestly this one straight up sucks, but it's good to have some pressure to get something out the door, you learn more from daily bad drawings than a good one once a month.

ive just set a goal to do digital more often for inktober. its going ok, only the second day so not much to say yet

how do i deal with the fact that art is mostly up to talent and intuition? I've tried studying fundamentals, and i don't see how it works. I don't understand how circles and boxes are supposed to help me draw anime girls.

What does this mean? Like could give me examples?

i've read countless books on art and none of it makes sense to me, and i still don't understand how stuff like drawing boxes are supposed to help me draw an anime girl.
>>
>>78291728
That doesn't really answer much.

>How is drawing boxes supposed to help me draw an anime girl
it doesn't. Or not directly. It teaches you how to draw a basic shape in 3d space. Everything you wanna draw, is typically in 3d space or a 3d environment. Everything that exists, is 3d in shape. If you wanna draw stuff, understanding that premise and how to use it effectively is going to help you draw an anime girl.

my nigga the human body is literally just a sphere, two boxes and 4 cylinders. Understanding that makes a WORLD'S difference when trying to understand how the major sections/parts of the body work. And if you dive just a bit deeper, you start to realize the entire fucking world, especially man-made objects, can be broken down to simpler 3d objects (box, sphere, cylinder, pyramid, etc). I'm very surprised by people's large hesitancy to dive into fundamentals deeply and read, especially as a beginner who's enjoying having some sort of thing to study and look towards.

some details feel a bit off. the fingers on high hand are bent too much, the head looks too big (but maybe thatโ€™s my taste). iโ€™d need to fuck around with liquify to fully analyze it

I've tried DrawABox, but quit when i realized it wasn't going to help much with my goal. i went to learning what "fundamentals" are required for me to draw characters, so i tried practicing, and i've concluded that this sorta stuff is for the naturally gifted.
>>
>>78291795
>>78291839

Also, i've never really seen anyone truly get better by doing "fundamentals". Every artists i've aspired to even come close to achieving, has always been somewhat competent from when they started. They had some idea of what they were doing right away, only refining their skills with time. These people were destined to be artists, it's just who they are what their brains tell them to do. For people like me, it's very much the opposite.

imagine opening this general when you could just set up stable diffusion and create superior art with a few prompts and a click in less than one percentage of the time or effort

How long did you try practicing? Did you have any guidance or did you only rely on whatever you happened to read, knowing you very well might lack the understanding required to interpret what it says?

What newbies often don't quite get about art is that the beginning is the great filter of it. It's much like learning a language; you can't do it effectively just by reading books, you're going to have to actually talk to people (and put pencil to paper, in the case of art) and it's going to be a struggle until you've grasped some of the underlying logic and can begin to recognize the patterns. The fundamentals are that underlying logic for art, and it's less of a collection of techniques to learn and more of a mindset to get into. You've perhaps heard that learning art is more about learning how to see than learning how to draw. This is true, but as with many other pieces of art advice, it only really makes sense in hindsight when you've already learned and applied it. Drawing lines is something anyone can do, even those without functional arms. Knowing where and why to draw the lines is the hard part, and for that, you need to learn how to see the forms of whatever you're drawing as a collection of lines. And before you can do that, you need to understand how lines create the illusion of a 3D object on a 2D sheet of paper.

Have you ever seen someone go from a complete cold start, not even having doodled as a kid, to artistic competence, observing every last little step along that road? Most people who "start" art have some underlying amateur experience they're looking to turn into something more professional, which might be creating this illusion for you. I can guarantee to you we've all struggled mightily at the start just to produce something that's barely a step above a child's scribbles. Talent isn't some magical inborn ability, it's simply the capacity to learn faster than your peers. What really matters is the drive to keep creating.

I am immensely incompetent and my constant practice of fundamentals is the only reason why I'd consider myself even somewhat good. I'm in the middle of a huge art block and I'm brute forcing my way through it through muscle studies.

>see anime girl art
>copy anime girl art
>do so for a while until you understand anime girl art and can make your own
drawing anime girls isnt hard, If you have a passion for the subject and time to draw it, you will get better

>How do I deal with the fact that art is mostly up to talent
Understand that this is not a fact and is instead just cope to prevent yourself from working hard. Stop making up excuses and execute. Allow yourself to be bad and make mistakes and instead of beating yourself up over it actually learn from them. Ask yourself specifically why something is bad.

Anatomical charts of bones and muscles will help you a ton more than boxes and circles. Those are the real fundamentals you should be studying.
Start life-drawing actual setups of physical boxes in your room. It'll help you understand light, physicality, perspective, and negative space. You'll have a real thing to reference when your work doesn't match up and it'll help you make adjustments.

You sneed about not being able to be great for a little while and then you go on to see if you can't at least get pretty decent.
Unless you're a howie or a pajeet who just sees art as a means to earn money. Then you quit and never darken the doorway of the art world ever again.

You suffer like a bitch and never draw or you suffer like a bitch and draw all your life. It's either or when you don't have talent you need strong will and if you don't have strong will then quit worrying about it.
One day when you're 30 or 40 you'll realize you wasted your time worrying about dumbshit and practice it as a hobby, eventually getting competent and questioning why you didn't start sooner.

2 two of the ink humiliation ritual, on almost day 4
Didn't had much of an initial idea and I think I fucked up a lot on this picture
Didn't help that I sketched it yesterday while being possibly on alcohol and then also erasing half of it so I couldn't even reconstruct my thought process
I was likely horny
