The mech hums, screens flickering to life. Its targeting systems groan awake, annoyed and twitchy. Like a tired old dog recognizing its leash.

And there she is.
Mistress.
Casual. Beautiful. Standing with the other dignitaries while her vines toy with the plushie you left behind. She hasn't noticed you engaging the cockpit yet, or if she has, she's being patient.

The targeting reticule floats lazily over the screen. She's right there. Center mass.
You know systems like this like breath and blood. Even with no neural jack, no synced implant, you could calibrate this railgun with a kiss and a guess. You know the arc. You know the delay. You know it won't hurt her.
Even a direct hit.

Thanks to some sort of fifth-force witchcraft, you Mistress's core is armored deeper than the shot could reach. Her soft, cuddly plating could crack and grow back before a second impact. She wouldn't even be angry, probably. Just disappointed.

Your finger hovers.
Not quite touching the trigger.

Because the truth isn't that she'd stop you.
It's that she wouldn't need to.

You want her to stop you.

Her voice is thick with exasperated affection now, vines gently encircling your wrists like an organic time-out harness.
"Does this mean I don't get ice cream tonight?" you ask, already knowing the answer.

You let out a dramatic sign and flop limp in her grip. "Mistress, this is oppression."
She scoops you up with ease, cradling you against her chest. "If we allowed every floret to shoot their caretakers, dear, the entire Compact would collapse within a week."

Having an Affini owner who convinces me to flort by somehow (without breaking any axioms or going non-canon or…) makes the life of someone who was a real bastard during the pre-compact days legitimately worse. And when I say no are you joking they give it a shot of class b to stop it crying and then point at the ground and say you dropped your ice cream it’s ruined now. And they start crying again. Eventually she reveals that she knows what I’m really worried about is the compact’s total avoidance of any sort of “guilt” or “punishment” means that if I’m personally mistreated in the future she and everyone else will just be an enabler and not do anything about it. And the big twist at the end is you the reader think it’s going to be some big plan with everyone in on it but no. She really was just making formerly very evil humans cry or get confused or be sad. Because that would hurt their Affini who consider them somehow blameless. It was really about that all along.
