They are quite different. Disposables use SAP (Super Absorbent Polymer) which actually absorb any fluids into a (mostly) dry gel. Its why with a bit of powder, you don't actually feel wet even after pissing yourself until you really start reaching the limit of your diaper. Its why you can sit on a very soggy diaper, and unless you are super over the limit, you won't leak.

Cloth diapers, on the other hand, the moisture is basically in a towel. You will feel more wet, and if you aren't careful, you can really squeeze fluids out of the cloth.

I own and wear both. Generally, more than one wetting, and your cloth is gonna be at a fairly high risk of a catastrophic leak. A dry cloth diaper feels very soft and bulky, and is quite nice. The cloth diapers I have are the pocket style ones, which are fairly easy to launder, and you can really bulk them up if you want.
