Not only is the sudden and (at least for them) without a cause weight-gain super fucking hot, there’s also a little bit of religion in there. Marie is the land goddess - she presides over fertility and growth in the area. So you give her offerings (pay for her meals, watch her eat more than anyone her size should be able to in astonishment - like worship) and then she in turn blesses the town with fecund fields and fecund women. So it works on multiple levels.
