Realistically speaking a dragon has to mature (both mentally and sexually/physically) to young-young-adult in like first 20, may be 30 years tops. A lot of people have this weird logical misconception that if dragon lives 1000 years then first 100 years is like 10 years for a human. This is not how it works, even in case of pure fiction, this not not how an intellect, compared to a human's, can possibly and realistically work. If it takes you 100 year to reach potential of 10yo human - you are simply exceptionally retarded dragon.
And the body needs to keep up. Human goes through mental sexual maturity in like 16 years at max, so for a dragon, it has to be in a similar timeframe, otherwise you create a dissonance where mind is already mature enough but the body isnt, it is kind of really bizzare state to be in as an intelligent creature. Imagine being a 2 yo baby with the mind of 20yo.

The only realistic way I can see it, as mentioned early - very rapid growth in first 30 years to the size of an early young adult. For an average human who only seen dragon in pictures - that dragon may deceivingly look like an adult, and without direct side by side comparison only people who are familiar with the dragons can obviously see the obvious difference.

P.S. That means the little dragon shitlets probably eat a lot, like a LOT a lot.

I apologize in advance for the autism, but this is something I gave a bit of thought in my canon. Basically, the main idea is that dragons never stop growing, but their growth is slower the older they are. The math is kind of handwavy, but for the first 20 years or so, their growth is comparable to that of a human. At hatching, they're roughly the size of a housecat, and at 20 they're the size of a large man. After that, each interval at which they grow another man's worth of size is 20 years longer than the previous, meaning at 60, the dragon is twice that size, at 120, they're three times that size, and so on. Intellect-wise, they are the same way, so at 20 they're already fully mature. This way, yes, the dragons are still big, but only the ancient ones are truly massive. And yes, this is entirely just to justify a plot about a "childhood friend" relationship between a guy and the dragoness next door.

As I mentioned before if an intelligent being is mentally sexually mature but physically isnt - it creates really weird paradoxical situation. But they are half the size of a ~30% of a dragon who is 100 years old. How do you envision this working.

That is fine and that is how I would envision it as well, but because of the reasons I listed above they need to pretty much reach their relatively stable adult size VERY fast. It is fine if for the next 99999 the ever so slowly grow to reach the size of Manhattan, but it has to be reeeeeeeeeeealy slow.
Otherwise, from evolutionary stand point, the young in your setup simply have no choice. Another dragon that is 30-40 years old is already 2x its size and power but it isnt even in its prime, it still young adult and it simply can get rid of completion in no time. It creates negative effect on species survival, it took humans for a while to live to reach the state of social development where the "everyday' encounter with other tribes stopped being constantly violent and eventually an actual civilization began to develop. At that point the concerns I voiced have less important but you NEED to reach that stage first. I dont see how your dragons realistically can do it, the species will simply go extinct.

I think you are making mistake assuming the development of the race already began with such given state of civilization, which is impossible of course.

It is funny but if you simply reduce the lifespan of a dragon to something more ground like like 500 years or so a lot of things become easier to figure out and work around.

Short answer: I don't think about it.
Not so short answer: I haven't put enough work into the set-up to work out all the kinks and get it into a completely coherent state. It's mostly rules of thumb and back-of-the-envelope calculations. In my defense, I see having a totally coherent world as secondary to setting my stories in it. The exact rules are never going to be explained in the narrative, I am only going to use them to maintain some degree of sense and consistency.
I'm also partly keeping it this vague because I have considered issues like what you brought up as well, and the solutions I came up were imperfect at best. I'm running with the mentality that if a scenario wouldn't make sense under this set of rules, then it would either play out in a different way from the start, or it wouldn't come up at all. For example, the question of how would a 20-year-old mother care for her dragonets: She probably wouldn't. Option A, if she actually lays and hatches an egg, she might not be able to feed and defend the hatchling or herself. Option B, she probably wouldn't get gravid in the first place. Just because dragons mature at 20 doesn't mean they have to start pumping out eggs at that age. A successful dragoness would probably spend a long time getting stronger, amassing wealth and building up her lair and territory.
One more aspect of this is that the world I'm using this for is a cookie-cutter Tolkien-esque fantasy, where dragons are a) scarce, and b) obscure to the point of being mythological to the other sapient races. It's more of a justification for the result, rather than a firm foundation to build upon.

Yes and no. There is a very specific reason why most earth creatures are capable of breeding pretty much the same moment they reach sexual maturity and core concept outlines in picrel (but it is a heavy read before you even get to that).
That being said!
If you willing to compromise and reduce the age of dragons to more realistic values, you actually can try spin it that way, i.e. mature, at 20yo dragon, can have sex if desired but wont get pregnant for x more years. But it can be too long or it stops making any sense (it would mean dragon evolve to have and enjoy sex first and foremost and ability to breed is just side-effect where as it is the exactly opposite and replication is the main reason and riving point)

That being said, I'm ultimately just some retard on the Internet trying to write about things that appeal to me. I often find myself relying on the magic spell of "I'm not going to explain how it works, dear reader, just trust me that it does." In my experience, every detail I introduce to solve an issue carries the possibility of introducing new issues, and at some point I'd rather just get on with the story.
Furthermore, dragon biology is just a small portion of the setting details I had to consider. I also had to come up with the geography of the kingdom the story takes place in, the political relationships between the monarchy, its vassals, the guilds and various other interest groups, the kingdom's relationships with the neighboring nations, a magic system that is less broken than Animus magic, and so much more. All of that, just to serve as a backdrop for a simple story about a man and a dragon traveling through the kingdom and getting into various adventures.

They're model kits, similar to those Gundam ones you've probably seen over the years. But like Bionicle, once assembled, their parts are interchangeable - not just with other kits in the same line, but with anything that has 5mm holes, ports, or joints. 30MF has been making knight figures for a little while now (and they have sibling lines in the 30 Minute Missions and 30 Minute Sisters lines that have been going on for years, all using similar engineering), so they're a well-established line that's fairly well-known for being easy to use as customization fodder.

Has anyone else found it weird that Katydid apparently had Cricket when she was only 9 years old herself?
Obviously age in Wings of Fire barely makes any kind of sense to begin with, but it seems really early if dragons are considered adults at age 7 and can become 100+ years old.

When it was first revealed in the book I actually assumed Katydid hid being Crickets mother because she was ashamed and she had her accidentally.
But turns out it was only because of the forbidden love thing between her and Malachite and at no point does it get mentioned at all how young of a mother she is/was.

Give the subject, any short stories about young dragoness not quite being ready to be a mother and thus either getting rid of or selling her eggs on black market?

it wouldnt but because it is seprated, the vagina would stay as clean (or as close) to other creatures that have it separated.
Also, dedicated asshole means dedicated anus, which's muscles is usually good at cutting/separating the stuff off and keeping itself relatively clean. Given the fact dragons would have no fur or anything for the "stuff" to stick to it will be fairly easy wash even in a pond.

Either way, playing devil's advocate, even if we take the bidet idea you are so keen of - it would benefit even more to the split genitals design as it is easier to clean both holes since they have their own external opening and they dont mix (instead of trying to protrude the cloacial opening to try and wash away everything that is inside)

Come on now anon, you wouldn't want your dragon getting away and hurting themselves would you? They've been inside for so long that they just wouldn't know what to do in the outside world. It'd just be a terrible blur of bright lights and colors until they plow into a bus or the side of a building or something. All of that big sky and open air would be simply terrifying for them after all that time. That would be terrible, you wouldn't want that. A few quick cuts to the wing membrane and they're safe on the ground forever, as long as you suture the live edges over so they don't heal back together. It's practically painless and they usually adjust in a few short months. And a few months is no time at all compared to how long you'll have them.

That's really a hallmark of a bad owner. A responsible dragon owner would never keep their pets in poor conditions, and a properly trained and well-behaved dragon would already know to never do anything that might make their owner react that way. They're complicated creatures, they want SO badly to just be good and behave, but they don't know how until you show them. But after you show them and punish them and show them and punish them enough, most will learn to do anything you need them to. And resourceful people can still find a way to make use of the few stubborn ones that don't.

Anything can be effective as long as you do the right conditioning first. Shock collars are fine, but they look a bit outwardly cruel, even if it's being worn for a reason. They can't be climbing all over your furniture or they might hurt themselves after all. Worse yet they might make you want to hurt them, and we can't have that.

Anyway, conditioning. With the right conditioning a glance out of the corner of your eye is all you'll need to get them to sit stark still for hours. Believe it or not the hardest part is getting them to start moving around again.

That is actually fucked up. Imagine being dragoness in your prime, returning to her solidary rock spire that can only be reached by air, right after a nice hunt, full of belly. Something happens and you manage to hit a rock with your right wing while landing and it would not be issue but it twist you in air and you crumble on the same wings, breaking it completely.
And now you are fucked, alone, on the high-altitude rock no one can ever get to.
For the next 2 weeks the villagers in the valley nearby would hear the long, sorrowful dragon calls at night, calling for help.

Something like dragon wouldnt really shed the skin similar to snakes but rather similar to some big lizards. Depending on the type of scales it would come off in small patches or, if it is independent scales the scales itself would simply fall off like glitter.

I personally prefer 2nd version as these scales can be collected/used afterwards so it is more interesting that way
