In light of the recent loss of /a/'s booru (that thankfully came back online under new management/hosting), it's time we had a serious talk about booru.org and the many 4chan related boorus that are still being hosted on it.

These boorus have years/decades worth of content stored in them, and in many cases go back farther than a boards' dedicated third party archive. The site's online status is constantly in flux. There are times where pages don't load. Or a certificate expired. Nothing has been updated for years aside from the addition of shitty Cloudflare ID checkpoints. New booru creation and account creation was disabled years ago - this was already the writing on the wall we needed to move boorus elsewhere, and yet many still sit on this aging and outdated platform. It's not just 4chan dedicated boorus either, it's everything! And it could all vanish in the blink of an eye.

Considering that many generals (both active and dead) on /trash/ have their own boorus, along with the main trashdump booru, there needs to be planning set in place to move these boorus elsewhere. But it feels like many people either don't know about the issues with booru.org or don't care. Since new account creation was disabled years ago, it's especially damning that many old boorus have now been simply left abandoned and not updated with new content in years. People moved on, but the loss of content from previously uploaded images on those old forgotten boorus is significant.

Personally tried running a booru set up on e621ng recently but it sort of fell apart due to lack of communication between admins. No idea how to make the e6 software multi network compatible even though they do have the capability to run the sfw only e926 but could help with the booru successor project on the sysadmin side. Making a scraper to preserve old content is viable too. What are your objectives and requirements?

What is e621ng?
>Making a scraper to preserve old content is viable too.
People should have been scraping old boorus a long time ago. Many of the older links I found were 404'd - boorus that were taken offline years ago, likely for violating TOS.
>What are your objectives and requirements?
I'm not involved with the tech side of things. My objective is to let as many people as possible know about booru.org's problems, if they haven't already known. I'm all about preserving content and there are many old boorus dear to me that I would hate to see lost forever.

>>79444286
Don't post on any 4chan board then, as they all have third party archives.

e621ng is the software e621 uses. Its probably the best booru software with active development.
Maybe you should ask each of those boorus communities for help in determining their future? Happy to assist on the tech side of things but maybe the community might need to help with funding because running a single booru requires at least $20 a month.

Don't care since they banned the loud booru, they can get fucked for refusing to let anyone get a new one and keeping random retards porn stashes up. They won't even let you buy one, I would pay hundreds to have my own booru.

>>79443643
There was a loud booru but it went down last summer. However before tlhg evacuated there was renewed talk of bringing it back.
>>
>>79444866
It costs about $250 each year to run a single booru. If you like we could work together to set up an instance. Would be happy to give you hosting account and server system access considering that youd be paying for it too.
>>
>>79445058
Well damn I wish that was on the site page, I might have to contact them/you about that at some point then. I retract my prior statement, even if I am still a bit salty about the loud booru being removed while many others hosting similar content stayed.

Sorry to clarify setting up a booru for you would not be on booru.org because it seems the admin is awol. This would be a completely new booru on its own server and hosting account with a domain name that we would set up with e621ng as per >>79444216. You wouldnt need to pay the $250 all at once either but thats roughly what it costs to run a booru for a year. After the tech side is set up you would be able to sign up for the booru and get your account admin status to run it how you like. How does that sound?
>>
>>79445202
How does philomena compare to e621ng for searching? Who actively maintains it? Interestingly e621ng received some significant updates in the last year improving is sortof old interface.

A lot of the content on the /trash/ booru needs to be posted in the /co/llection. For example, all the Lola Bunny art like pic related.

Why tf is his face blurred out?

The art is a reference to Fake Taxi. The male actor in those videos gets his face blurred to focus on the female porn stars.

Thanks for that, didn't know it existed.

>>79444866
To be fair loli and shota porn was banned for quite a while, which I assume that booru was full of. They likely didn't allow it again because it wasn't worth the risk.

>There was a loud booru but it went down last summer.
I assume it was hosted some place else? When looking in archives I was only looking for "booru.org" domains. I did find the original Loud House one, which was of course long gone.

If it was artwork drawn for /trash/ and posted on /trash/, it stays on /trash/, for the most part.

>>79446870
Nigger did you even READ the OP past the opening line? Someone already scraped the /a/ booru a while back and had the new one up and running in no time. Because they knew something might eventually happen to the one hosted on booru.org.
There's even a rarfag on /a/ who has a bigger archive than the original booru - they have 20 more gigs of files.
>>
>>79446756
>Who are you, exactly?
Just a random anon who has nothing to do with booru.org but has messed around with hosting a booru. Can answer more if you want.
>>
>>79447034
>If it was artwork drawn for /trash/ and posted on /trash/, it stays on /trash/, for the most part.
There is just one problem. Furries have a soft ban on /co/ that gets randomly enforced. /trash/ provides the benefit of requesters to provide references to artists. Board tribalism is also silly. The /co/ booru already permits content from other boards out of convenience.
>>
>>79447034
>for the most part.
I mean, yeah, but if it's /co/-related, a lot of it has been uploaded to the /co/llection.
Partly because a lot of /trash/ and /co/ content overlap, like the generals that popped up once they were banned from /co/, you still see /sug/ and /tohg/ around for example, with the latter getting its art uploaded to the /co/llection every so often.

>or too dead
Even if they are dead, they were active at one point. Whether the fandom dried up or it was because people lost access to updating it, some "dead" boorus are worth saving.
>I try at least archive all the drawthread ones
Going through your list, I am happy to see you are archiving bun, trashdump, sthg, and ourobooru (is this also 8ch's booru? I swear they had another one at one point). Does your archiving, aside from images, also include tags, upload dates and source links?
Are you the anon who owns the /co/, /v/ and /a/ booru? Or someone else?
I had forgotten about the Caturday archive (does the /co/ booru pick up where this one leaves off, or was the entire caturday booru dumped into the /co/ booru?). What was Grayfruit, ICSCN, osc, and proton?

5naf should be considered to be archived and/or given a new booru, they have over 40,000 images and are still a very active general on /trash/. stevenuniverse is also active here as well, with over 18,000 images.
shorty, gravityfalls, rule34stuck, adventuretime, and channel-tan I think are all worthy of being archived, even if some have lower activity than others (remember, there are some boorus out there where the people would have loved to continue them, but couldn't because they were locked out of making new accounts, and the older users who had accounts lost internest).
bestkat and hungrygame should be dumped into /co/s booru.

Same with the Hungry Games and Channel-Tans ones.

I hesitated to list them under Western because one is a Hungarian comic while the other is a Dutch comic. They are not western in the traditional since of image board term, but they are /co/ related...I guess they coulda sorta gone there.

What other boards?

>>79447179

I understand this, but I assumed trashdump was used more for porn while /co/llection was mostly for sfw things.

>>79447227
To be fair it's pretty small, what is showderp?
>>
>>79447680
>100% they have been uploaded? Do they have their own tags to find that stuff within the /co/ booru?
The /co/ tournaments have their own tags on the booru to find specific years.
>>
>>79447680
>What other boards?
All of them so long as the post is related to comics or cartoons. /trash/ posts get uploaded there sometimes.
>>
>>79447680
>100% they have been uploaded?
As far as I know, I believe it's all there, some was uploaded a long time ago, and some somewhat recently.
>Do they have their own tags to find that stuff within the /co/ booru?
Besides HGS-tan who has her own tag, no the Hungry Games stuff, all the art just has the series and character names.
The Channel-Tans are easier to find with the "personification" tag, but that's not exclusive to them, it's easier to use a specific network name plus that one for better results, eg "cartoon_network personification".
I've been thinking about making a specific "channel-tan" tag like the board-tan one, but that would be a very slow process, specially without the mass tagging tool.
>>
>>79448153
IMO it would only make sense, that if a booru gets absorbed by another one, it should retain its old name in a tag. So yes, all channel-tan characters should have that tag, to make them easy to find. And the Hungry Games stuff should be tagged as Hungry Games if those images came from that booru. If not, they get lost within the booru and will become impossible to find again.
>>
>>79447680
>I assumed trashdump was used more for porn while /co/llection was mostly for sfw things.
I don't really use trashdump, but there's explicit stuff in the /co/llection from as far back as 2011, nowadays just take a look and you'll see /aco/ art also being posted there, so it's not like porn is banned in the /co/llection.
>>79448235
Just from a look at the old Channel-Tan booru, it wasn't absorbed, but the art was simple being uploaded to the /co/llection around the same time it was being uploaded to the Channel-Tan booru, the tagging system simply followed up how the original Channel-Tans were tagged, with the personification tag.
I think they should get a tag, not because of the old booru, but because of the concept itself is definitely notable enough to get one, specially if there's already one for board-tans.
Also, some art from the Hungry Games booru was already in the /co/llection, just not tagged with anything special, so I'm not sure if those old Hungry Games are notable enough to warrant their own tag.
