Thread Question: What would you do if a bug anthro randomly showed up at your house?
Writing a paper defending wasps. Wish me luck boyos.>>79731780Complement their antennae
Just in time! Here's Chapter 30 of The Howler>https://archiveofourown.org/works/61103611/chapters/196944781This is actually the one year anniversary of starting this story, (okay it's one day late but close enough) I'd just like to thank all my /bzzt/bros for sticking with it all this time and giving me all the encouragement I needed to keep going. Hopefully it won't take another year before it's finished! Quillion gets a whole chapter this time, and while he's not the star of the show, he's about to uncover something very unsettling.
>>79731904You're certainly going to need as much luck as you can get with a paper like that, godspeed>>79731964Thank you for all the incredible writing you've both provided up to this point and continue to provide after. As for this chapter, it seems this entire system is prone to misunderstandings, and if war/ extreme punitive measures seemed to be on the horizon before, now it's fully crested that horizon. Can only wonder how outright chaos can be prevented in this situation while a high-ranking noble holds that perception of the situation
>>79731964>This is actually the one year anniversary of starting this story.Congrats on the meeting the only possible milestone that this story is going to get (because even something as great as this story has to end at somepoint). Let hope for a new year of cooking human/bug stories. Also, it seem like Humanity is going to be the worst thing that happened to that sector since the Intelligence War and we haven't even got there yet (besides Eigen but he's checked out atm) I don't think "We come in peace" is going to cut it anymore.
Welcome back bugs
Bump
>>79731780I'd be really curious what their chitin feels like at that scale. If the microscopic hairs scale, I wonder if it would feel like velvet rather than a smooth plate.
>>79743816It would be rather interesting to see how an anthro bug's body would differ from that of a regular bug
>>79744987fluffy bees
>>79731745Cheers>>79731780I would offer them a place to live in my house
>>79747802I forgot I sent this and wrote up a whole post about what a coincidence it was that someone sent it just prior to me before I realized only from the filename. I suppose that means it’s time for bed.
>>79747802>>79748661I want to cuddle with a centipede
Reposting this question from the end of the last thread:With regards to music, would bugs be more into simple steady rhythms, or would they instead get into wacky math-rocky polymetric and polyrhythmic stuff? Their sorta robotic, linear movements make me think both could be true, and no two bugs are the same, obviously, but still, would YOUR bugs of choice lean more towards house and black metal, or breakcore and technical death metal?
What bug opinion got you like this?
>>79752737I don't like Scolipede with a donut anus
>>79752206I feel like they'd be into the more esoteric side of things, maybe with entire subcultures based on the type of bug, since those complex rhythms would probably be a much different experience with their auditory organs
>>79752829>sweet chicken basket Pooh, that's not a juicy donut anus, that's a prolapsed rectum and a medical emergency! What artist even started this trend?>>79752863>mantids are into complex percussive music>clicking mandibles and clapping scythes together, forming various odd sounds that are almost melodic>crickets like one-note melody line that has insane rhythmic complexity overlaid on top of a simple 2/4 drum loop>switching up the tempo is popular with most bug types, mimicking them skittering quickly, stopping, skittering, stopping
>>79752958>What artist even started this trend?Sunibee, who also cemented the combination of leavanny and scolipede
>>79752737I don't like seeing bugs with any other type of furry and even humans are sorta eh
This shit goes so fucking hard>>79752206String instruments and heavy death metal is my headcanon>>79752737That pesticides are a good thing
>>79753639As much as we love bugs they can cause a lot of problems, have to acknowledge their status as pests sometimes
>>79754309That's fair I was just being a little facetiously sarcastic
>>79752206They would be pretty limited in terms of instruments. Anything with a mouthpiece is out of the question, so no brass or woodwinds. Something like an accordion would work though. String instruments would be ever-present I think because a lot of bugs make noises in similar ways (like crickets).>>79752829I don't like scolipede at all. It's more horse than bug, and horses are disgusting to me.>>79753148regular furries sorta freak me out ngl>>79752737i like mosquitos
>>79755557Stridulation being like string instruments is a good point, have seen a couple pieces of art with grasshopper violinists and the like
>>79752206If the bugs have extra sets of arms they might have more complex instrument setups which could lend itself to more complex rhythms and time signatures
Squad goals
>>79752737I want more BUG ARTPROPER BUG ARTNOT JUST FUZZY BULLSHIT BEES AND SLAPPED "BUG" AS A TAGalso good drawing
>>79731964Just read everything, its good! I like the FTL autism and the fact that yes, a ship going at the speed of light is basically a giant railgun. Take your time, writing is hard
>>79752206String instruments is a shoe-in, they might use thinner string that could reach a higher pitch and wouldn't cut into their chitin fingers.I don't know if I agree on death metal music tho as I think that it due to that fanfic that people go for that, I think their music will be more like Drone doom instead as it has a prolonged buzz sound which I feel insects would definitely use in their melodies. Here's a example that I have in mind concerning this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOUbZJbkHNw
>>79759509So this is what the Among-us guys really look like...

>>79771443That doesn't look much like a mosquito anyways, hardly a significant loss
>>79771443>>79771762From what I see, The moskitos either look like a regular guy or (may god forgive me for uttering it's name) among us crewmates
>>79771973WRONG PIC
>>79771762>>79771973Yeah went too human for the princes designs imo honestly like the fodder ones better the stag beetle guy was pretty cool too
I'm too tired all the time to draw bugs, this sucks.
>>79771999I need an explanation for that pig picIt's been burning a hole in my mind
>>79775252nta but I have to imagine it's something about making pigs fly because of the saying
Where do I tell my friends I find all these bug pictures? I get them all from here lmao>>79775252There used to be this old show called large and dangerous rockets, and it was essentially a collection of especially impressive model rocket launches. There was a category for 'unusual' ones, where the goal was to make the stupidest possible rocket that could actually take flight. The pig was one of those submissions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kRJiHR9Ti4 Here's the youtube video about it.It was a big part of my childhood, along with another show by the same people about a competition where some rednecks would create literal artillery pieces to launch a pumpkin as far as possible. I believe it was called pumpkin chunkin or something like that
I use a combination of pixiv, pinterest, twitter exclusively following japanese artists, tumblr sometimes, boorus, newgrounds, etcThank you for the explanation by the way
>>79778277>>79778201Whoops forgot to click your post
Oh good, maintenance is over
>>79779780Yeah I was a bit worried there when my post didn't go through luckily I made it back just in time
*chair clattering*
so tired of nerds talking about the square cube lawjust make the bugs BIGGER
I recently read a 1960s science fiction story called “Countercharm” by James White, which takes place in his Sector General universe wherein different aliens from across the galaxy come in to receive specialized treatment for their respective species. In Countercharm, the main doctor, in order to operate on an alien crab species, must download the conscious mind of a long-dead crab doctor in order to have the requisite knowledge to perform surgery. The problem is that when the copy of the crab’s intelligence was made, he was at the peak of sexual maturity for his species, and thus perpetually horny for crabmeat. The main character, a human, must navigate teaching these crab aliens about how to conduct surgery on their species while also having the hots for one of the female crab students.
>>79782023giwtwm
>>79782023>Look up story>One of the first results is a person complaining the guy ends up with a regular human nurse rather than one of the crabsIf only authors weren't such cowards
>>79782023>download the mind of a horny insect>you start noticing how good insects people smell>>79781653But if you made them too big, they can't survive long falls anymore
>>79782023is that a zoidberg reference?
>>79731964so, is viraas supposed to be sort of like honey?
>>79784406Strictly speaking it's a byproduct of their metabolism of hisk, similar to nanthe, but opposite in desirability. Instead of being the poison part, it's the volatile compound that they used to smell out their only food source in the wild. In a word, it smells good, but it would probably be quite vomitous to actually eat. It's technically inedible waste and builds up over time, but because the act of digesting it also confers some unique smells from the Fyrix responsible, it becomes something of a unique identifier to those with keen enough smell like the Fyrix. It was first used by the ancient proto-Fyrix to mark things as, 'good' or 'bad' based on what digestive byproducts they used, but the evolving proto-Fyrix eventually began using it to denote others as 'good' or 'bad' in society. Over time they grew to use it in more and more subtle ways. It became the backbone of their entire social credit system to the point that they developed organs specially suited to housing it from other Fyrix as well as keeping it climate controlled. It's more nuanced than that, but you'd need to ask an actual Fyrix to get the whole story.
>>79784406I think it meant to be like a fingerprint that has a unique fragrance to show that you have done this person a favor in the past. Seeing they are ants like aliens and ants have the most broad sense of smell compared to the other insects (ants have about 400 smell receptors while bees have only about 180 and it gets much worse for the other insects)Fun fact, humans also have around 400 smell receptors as well, so we might be able to smell the same things ants could smell. They likely have a stronger sense of smell in terms of distance.
>>79784757>>79784770so its completely useless besides its cultural significance? at least nanthe can be used as a building material, so what other uses does viraas have?could humans smell it?on another note, how long is one of their years compared to one of ours?
>>79784923>so its completely useless besides its cultural significance? It also smells good, but yes. That being said, you could say the same thing of currency and affection. It's already the single most important thing to Fyrix society. I don't think it needs many more uses. Yes, humans could smell it in large enough amounts, but not in a way that would let them distinguish anything useful. I imagine it to smell like a slightly acrid myrrh, but obviously it's its own thing. I'll reveal this in the story eventually, but a year on Luoma is 0.86 Earth years.
>>79784923>could humans smell it?I bet we could if we sniff close enough to them and depending if the smell is agreeable or not.>on another note, how long is one of their years compared to one of ours?No idea. All we know about Lumoa is that it's a planet that is around 50% to 33% of Earth (less gravity) and it has a warmer climate (Eigen comments about the heat). Other than that, we don't know their length of day is shorter or longer (Eigen isn't paying much attention to the time) or how long it takes a full solar orbit.
>>79784770I definitely imagined them as having better senses of smell than humans, but when it comes to broad chemicals I wouldn't say they're *that* much better. Probably closer to the average dog's sense of smell, but that being said, when it comes to their special hormones and viraas, they're so incredibly sensitive that it requires only a thousand or so molecules for them to pick up on it, which is why their language is limitless in its nuance, and why you're so pitiable for your ignorance and genetic inability to participate in it.
>human i am standing on your sandwich>what are you going to do about it?
>>79785823I'm gonna EAT YOU
>>79785823That scorpion is going to get turned into food itself if it doesn't move
>>79785144>but a year on Luoma is 0.86 Earth years. That would mean that Nestiri has been in military for over 258 years. So he would have started service around 1828, right within our Industrial Revolution. So while he serving his race, we were>Introducing practical electric power systems>Started to developed computers>Made the telephone>Had 2 World Wars>Developed Nuclear weaponry and nuke Japan twice (we're friends now)>Had the whole Cold War, got close to nuking each other a few times >Developing space travel and landing on the moon.>Made the Internet>Effectively connected the whole world>Developing AIAnd the many other stuff that happening in that future like fusion, genome editing and interstellar travel. And we did all that just to ruin Nestiri's life in the end of it.>>79785495>I wouldn't say they're *that* much better. Probably closer to the average dog's sense of smell,By that account, they'll be over x2 better at smelling (unless you were referring to the smell sensitivity, not the smell diversity in this case).Man, the sense of smell is more complicated than it seems.>when it comes to their special hormones and viraas, they're so incredibly sensitive that it requires only a thousand or so molecules for them to pick up on it, which is why their language is limitless in its nuanceI can see that, kind like mammals are sensitive to the smell of decay while insect are not usually bothered by it yet they run from the sense of garlic.>and why you're so pitiable for your ignorance and genetic inability to participate in it.YeahWellI could put them on top of their house and leave them thereSo take that.
>>79786474>That would mean that Nestiri has been in military for over 258 yearsi take it every alien is just immortal due to their advanced tech?or are the fyrix naturally long lived?i think they mentioned a rejuvination thing at one point, right?do low ranking bugs not have access to such tech?
>>79785934I've seen these sold at museums and have always wondered if people actually eat the bugs that are in these.
>>79787238anal with a scorpion seems dangerous
>>79787238They're at least prepared to be edible, though I sorta doubt many people would
>>79787238>wondered if people actually eat the bugs that are in thesego to enough flea markets like I did and they're on wholesale, grasshoppers are pretty decent btw
>>79787338Remember getting offered some sort of bug years ago, probably was just the seasoning but the taste reminded me of sunflower seeds
>>79786560>Chapter 14>Of course it was Zharr who broke that silence, "We're in total agreement, Nex. And yet we've all rid ourselves of our natural lifespans! It seems to me that if one deems it righteous enough, these warnings need not apply!"Maybe not immortality but they have improved their lifespans.God I hope we don't get to that point, our leaders suck.>do low ranking bugs not have access to such tech?Depends if their elite suck as much as ours.>Nithry bullying you for you taste in literatureI bet the Fyrix wouldn't like Doom then.
>>79787434>I bet the Fyrix wouldn't like Doom then.actually, which of our literature would they like?they have a thing for the dramatic, right?would they enjoy old classisc like romeo and juliet or the titanic?
>>79787523I can't imagine any of our literature (or any entertainment really) could translate well enough for the Fyrix's general taste or to please their ego. They usually do a mass deletion every 25 of their years with only the best being immortalized. "Soul of Our Own" is one that turns up a few times and that sounds like one of those 'building a legacy story'.
>>79787386They taste like chicken without but that isn't saying much
>>79787523I would think any sort of human literature would be too tinged by human experience for them to consider it in a good light given how insular they are, probably would be at best viewed as something they could improve upon by turning it into something distinctly Fyrix in nature
If you were to make the fyrix in stellaris, how would you make them?I'm thinking pic related for portrait with conformists, agrarians, weak and wasteful for traits and a xenophobic, pacifistic materialistic government with pompous purists+ pleasure seekers for civics
>>79789147It's been so long since I've touched Stellaris so besides not remembering what there was, god knows what they've added since then, but surely there must be something to represent a caste system or unique communication method
I WISH Stellaris had more bug themed portraits. I might consider buying it instead of just pirating it like I did already
you rub my carapace and i’ll rub yours
So… which organisms are and are not “bugs”? Everyone agrees that insects and arachnids are “bugs,” but what about crustaceans? myriapods? How about worms, do they count as “bugs”? What about aliens that bear some resemblance to earthly arthropods, like the rachni (pic related) from the Mass Effect series? or the so-called “arachnids” from Starship Troopers?
>>79792178Bugs clean themselves a lot, so I imagine it would definitely be a way to bond with your bug. Also since they have exposed joints it probably feels really good if you help them clean around in those sensitive areas.
>>79773801I pulled through it.
>>79792178I'm not a bug so that perhaps might be kinda gay
>>79793593She's as lovely as the day you drew herApologies to have missed you good friend I've been drinking all day I meant to give you a vote of confidence because deep in my heart I knew it was you
Can anyone redraw this image
>>79792743Cute bug. Is that Zil from the Unprofessional Actions series? Look like him.Kinda wonder how that series would go on after part 2? I know it meant to be a gay bugfic first and foremost but I found the whole attempted diplomacy between the bugs and human to be fascinating and kinda want to know more on how we see the bugs, especially after Ingen's betrayal and us suspecting that he told them our secrets. I doubt Ingen will be able to call for favor in the future, so no coffee for him and no more Dio for Zil
>>79785823.... Okay I guess he can have it.
>>79793593Should have realized that post was you, that lineless style gives her a quite intriguing look, very nice art. Hopefully you can deal with feeling tired so much though
>>79792395Myriapods definitely, crustaceans should count since they're arthropods, worms aren't bugs but are closely related enough to be talked about every now and then, alien bugs are a real case by case basis but the two examples you gave should count
My head hurts

>>79731964i gotta ask, do you have an ending planned for this that you are working towards or are you just winging it chapter by chapter?
Do you want to be webbed up and eaten by a giant spider or are you a fake bug fan?
>>79800749I've known how it was going to end from the very beginning. Some of the middle bits have been changed and shuffled around and figured out as I went along, but I only started writing once I had the general skeleton. It's going to be great, in my own estimation.>>79796785No, but I can see the resemblance now that you mention it.
>>79800794>Wanting to die rather than spend more time with bugsHow can you call yourself a real bug fan?
what can i do to make the bugs in my brain more comfortable?

>>79818553very disappointing
>>79826417Hey, that's fine! I don't mind as long as you don't use him in anything *super* weird.
>>79827469Thanks! Not sure when the model or an animation will be ready, both of us are quite busy, but the bug now occupies sizeable lonesome touch-starved space in my head; not convenient during the end of a semester. No worries, I don't intend to do anything weirder than is included in the stories, aside from maybe extra levels of hand holding.I don't have much bug content of my own to post here aside from Teraurge in Doom, which isn't the usual high-poly pre-rendered stuff I've done, which is mostly nuDoom stuff and some aliens.
>>79829061You're that guy? That's awesome! Used to see you and your stuff around back when /v/ had Teraruge threads (pain) and I liked them. I'm flattered that I've managed to surgically implant a bug into your brain. You've actually got me a little excited now. Good luck!
>>79820552>Arborans (no e)I don't remember any line in the fic that gives an idea on what an Arboran looks like.
