I think the advantage of going the Alium route is that you can use it to really go out there with cultures and explanations for getting so big.
Healthcare is much better in the future, so getting big and accommodated is trivial. Getting clothes and housing isn’t an issue for most super sized individuals, even if they have to squeeze in through doors and car seats. This is actual plot point in the Judge Dredd comics.
Culturally and biologically, maybe they already had to deal with them getting large, so there’s plenty of customs built around them that you can introduce new characters to.
Heck, an easy story prompt would be getting to know some thin Bug Person while working on a ship, but they start eating much more when they are planet side because that’s what’s natural for them
