Hello again, /fvn/. I gave Sweet Leaves a try this time. I liked the art style of it. It also has a lot of sounds and animation, so the presentation feels like the focus. It is missing some features, like rewind, and saving puts you at the start of the scene instead of right where you left off. Hopefully that is because they needed to not use something like Ren'Py for this. Just kind of a downgrade, but it is something they are looking to add in the future if they can. It is just kind of bland otherwise. Two gay dads take in a ferret as a guest to their home that has anxiety issues. That kind of colors a lot of the descriptions. But it is mostly just kind of overdescribing boring stuff. It's sweet mostly, but I'm not super invested in it or the clear signs of trauma the ferret has to deal with. It is just kind of what you would expect from a slow slice-of-life VN. Then when they switch the focus from that, it goes full drama because the badger's dad didn't respect him for being a homo and wanting to bake. The standard FVN fare. It is funny, after reading what I feel is pretty much the best way to do a story about discrimination, to be back at the same routine. It does have some sweet moments, but it feels like you know where it is going the moment they have one scene. Like, these are characters and conversations that have been played out many times before. It is also part 1 and kind of feels like an intro. A few hours long, but mostly just sets things up. Until the end, where it has a crazy dream that might be lore, but I don't really care either way. It didn't really make me hungry for more, so I'm most likely not going to be following it in the future.

It's not rare to see anons complain when the pace of a FVN is too slow and boring, but having now completed Camp Ash, I can say that we finally have a FVN that's too fast paced sometimes. Some of the death scenes could've really used slower pace. It's really goofy when the characters get over the death of a friend so quickly and get back to being calm and collected. But then again, the pacing in the first half (when the gang is getting to the camp and setting things up at the camp) is overall much better than in the second half (when the routes start to diverge).Also Dale is the best boy™.

Same thing with the true ending that was kind of just a long checklist of events one after the other. Glad to see more Dale love too.

>>80174077I can kinda forgive Camp Ash for "rushing" for a lot of deaths since in context whatever killed the character is usually around, meaning stopping to grieve means dying (which i think actually happens at several points when some characters do so), but it does depend on route.I'd say the bigger deal is when the deaths are sudden, Trisha getting lightning struck randomly is unintentionally funny and Miriam getting suddenly pulled up when exiting a door worked in context, but there are definitely some that are just sudden without really working because they /have to/ kill off everyone but the LI.I think it would worked better if it varied the amount of survivors each route, but that would screwed over some of them regarding "Screentime", but frankly i think that is still a issue. Duke basically is a better character in the routes he dies then his own IMO, because aside from Ernesto (where he dies first) he has good scenes until his death, be it trying to take on the millers, covering up the bodies or having a Homophobia/Racist meltie. Meanwhile Dale i think is played kinda safe, he is the same in all routes (But that also means his death tend to be the one that affects Chip the most).I think part of it is that it is also short, it is fast paced because it didn't want to become a multi-year project like most stuff is.

Hoss has his connection with the Mafia Bear establishing negotiation (And generally being a Red Herring by acting unnecessarily suspect) and Sal has MUH TESTS (That don't really amount to anything), Dean literally just has "I wanna fuck Dave!" and the whole cast already wants to do that. He is the most superfluous character in the cast and only exists to get hit in the balls and cucked. Finished Early Shift since it was so short. Seemed like was going to be a pretty standard slice of life until the end. That alone made me feel that this is worth keeping an eye on because of the potential it has. Hopefully it gets explored in the next update(s) because is in an interesting spot as long as it understands the pace of what it is setting up. If anyone has played Bravely Default there is a bad way to do the story it seems to be going for and getting tiring. Still cautiously optimistic overall.
