Well reading into its history, it was created by Maulana Karenga and loosely based on some eastern and southern African traditions. However, he was heavily influenced by UCLA Marxist theory and went on record saying Jesus was psychotic and Christmas is for white people. Supposedly the inciting event that drove him to make up a new holiday was a riot in August that started after a drunk driver and his mother fought police attempting to arrest him.
